"Internet Apocalypse:" Amazon, BBC, CNN, Reddit, Twitch, eBay and Many Other Major Sites Shut Down

Someone else's hamsters ran out of steam.

They're not saying it's a cyber attack. In fact, they're suggesting it's not.

But I wonder.

We're seeing a lot of cyberattacks on the US by Russian hackers -- with Biden doing nothing about them but approving Russian oil pipelines.

Millions of users across the globe reported problems trying to access web pages, with Netflix, Twitch and news websites including the BBC, Guardian, CNN and the New York Times hit by the problem.

...

After around an hour of downtime, some websites appeared to be gradually coming back online shortly before midday, but with slow loading times.

The problem was caused by the US firm Fastly, a content delivery network (CDN) company which helps users view website content more quickly.

The aim of CDNs is to reduce latency – the delay from the moment a user makes a request to the exact instant they receive a response. The higher the latency, the worse the user experience.

But if the service suffers a failure, as Fastly's did today, it prevents the companies that use it from operating on the net at all.

Many of the world's biggest websites run on the 'edge cloud' platform's network, hence the mass outage.

So what did you guys do with your unexpected extra time?

I hope none of you stooped to working to fill up that time.

73 Willowed, because, as Ace reminds me, I have to be at work:

I know I'll be accused of Monday-morning quarterbacking, but shit like this is why Trump's characterization of the MFM as "enemies of the people" turned out to be such a sick joke.

Real enemies of the people are not allowed to infest the White House and disrespect the President with inane accusations and outright lies and slander. Real enemies of the people are forbidden access to the POTUS on pain of termination with extreme prejudice. Real enemies of the people have their broadcast licences yanked, their protection from libel laws thrown out, their personal lives doxxed and SWATted and their financial records audited deeper than Hope Solo's globetrotting squeakhole.

No, Trump couldn't have done all of that, but he could have done some of that. "Enemies of the people" was as much of a rotten joke as "lock her up."

Honestly, I think it's time as a culture we discuss reliance on the internet. The idea that we have to have every device connected to the internet is dumb. Several years ago I read a big survey on the security of various "Internet of Things" devices for the home (light bulbs, door bells, etc.) done by a guy in the computer security business. What he (and his outfit) found was staggering in terms of wild vulnerability. I will never forget the conclusion, which was (and essentially as bluntly), "Our only hope is that the Internet of (incompatible) Things collapses under its own weight before the Internet of (insecure) Things gets us all killed."

Engineers being who they are, and market forces being what they are, and major tech execs being who they are, dealt with the incompatibility problems...

When using microwave data links, there is a phenomenon called "rain fade" where the weather causes marginal links to go down or become very slow due to retransmission and signal degredation.

When I worked at an outfit that owned a staggering number of leased lines from tier 1 networks, we referred to fiber cuts (which aren't actually that unusual, they just don't usually hit backbone circuits) as "backhoe fade."

170 I bet it's a lot harder to sell stolen fiber than stolen copper. As others have mentioned, copper has intrinsic value as scrap which is way higher than scrap glass.

You'd have to steal a VERY LONG RUN of fiber to make it worth reselling, I'd think.

Usually it's just some derp with a backhoe tearing a chunk out of it.

Engineer joke: Three engineers were going for a long hike in the Alaska Bush. One brought a GPS unit. One brought a set of paper topo maps, a good compass, and a transit. The third brought a couple of feet of fiber optic cable.

"What's that good for?" "Well, if we get lost, we can just bury it and wait for the backhoe to show up."

Actually, that's the bit that makes me think the attack is an inside job, one way or another. A sophisticated attack organization capable of suborning a corporate network from another continent would basically know how to handle the ransom without involving a custodial wallet in the US.

The central claim was that there is nothing you need out of the full FDA approval process - the expedited warp speed one is enough. However, you can't get rid of the full FDA approval process because otherwise you can't be sure it is really safe and effective - yes those points are contradictory, and yes the same people were making both arguments.

218 > Holy cow! All Texas wants is $10.47. I would pay them if I could figure out how. Their website wants me to open an account. How to break it to them that I'm not a joiner...

This right here is the reason Zoom killed Skype.

Want to get your friends or family or church group to join a virtual meeting. Send them a Zoom link. If they don't have Zoom, they are taken to an install page then once installed they join the meeting. Easy peasy.

Compare that to Skype where you have to go through the additional steps of making an account. Then you find out that you already registered that email address and you have to recover your password. Only problem is you don't use the phone number you associated with that account and you can't send a recovery key to it. So you are directed to call their support line aaaaaand fuck it, I'm just going to tell them I can't make the meeting.

People hate making new accounts for everything, but program managers and VPs and CEOs don't get it because they want you locked in and trackable.

So many tech nerds compare all the little features and experience of Skype vs Zoom vs Whatever. I'm telling you it's none of those things.

This is also revisionist history. I was at Microsoft when they bought Skype. Half the company thought it was a huge mistake because Skype was garbage and they thought it would damage Microsoft's reputation to slap their label on it. Skype was OKish as a first mover, but by the time MS bought it, it was already lagging behind its competitors.

Some of its nostalgia for a first mover product. They don't remember all of the shittiness, just how amazing it was compared to somewhat similar products at the time. I guarantee you there were piles and piles of severe bugs in that collection of code.
