We had a lot of fields and dirt roads surrounding our street. It was supposed to eventually become a whole subdivision but only ended up being a couple of streets.
Fields, woods, dirt roads, lots of hills from the carving out of those dirt roads...heck it was a boy's dream playground. We didn't come in till dinnertime and then if it was still light out we went right back out. Our old funland is now largely still wild, or at least wild-ish (the dirt roads are paved trails now). It's a "woodland ramble" attached to what is now a large park. Posted by: Guy Smiley at June 10, 2021 08:45 AM (Bmy3R) 75

COVID is a novel respiratory virus. Had the governments of the world done absolutely nothing, the biological outcome would've been - maybe, and just maybe - somewhat worse, but certainly not world-shaking.
If it weren't COVID, it'd have been something. Who knows, global warming, gun crime, a computer virus, black mold, endangered swamp rats, whatever. If a nasty case of the sniffles would suffice, anything will. And believe me, this is not the last manufactured mass panic they'll create and exploit for power. Replying to @a_centrism and @ConceptualJames The language is really awful and reckless, especially in a lot of the "critical whiteness studies" material. But this all operates in the postmodern/symbolic world. We should be careful of making hyperbolic predictions/warnings. Posted by: Hmmm... at June 10, 2021 09:35 AM (hDgjP) ++++ What is his point here? The "Postmodern/symbolic world" is the world in which our institutions operate and the philosophy that underpins them. Their underpinnings not only permit things like genocide-scale slaughter of the identified enemy to achieve better social outcomes, they have a long and rich history of doing exactly that. It isn't hyperbolic to say "That guy is a murderer and you should be extremely careful" when the guy is loudly proclaiming the fact that he is a murderer. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at June 10, 2021 09:57 AM (m+jkK) The left has got a big problem - "renewables", such as wind and solar, simply will not work to sustain a modern technological society. Germany's failed energiewende experiment has proven that beyond any shadow of doubt. (That's why they are now dependent on the good graces of Vladimir Putin to give them enough nat gas to keep the lights on) So the left has split into two halves - those who have some remaining rational functions, and who realize that if they do away with oil and gas, nuclear is the only option - and the majority, who still thinks that electrical outlets are Magik!!! and the power will always be there no matter what stupid things they do. 259 Oregon Dept of Education raided student absentee program funding to pay Nikole Hannah-Jones $50,000The Oregon Department of Education paid $50,000 to "1619 Project" founder Nikole Hannah-Jones for two virtual speeches -- a payment that amounted to over $14,000 per hour. The agency took the funds from an initiative meant to cut absenteeism among disadvantaged students.
_________ How ironic that the education bureaucrats wasted tens of thousands of dollars intended to help poor students on a couple of bullshit speeches from that race-baiting black hacktivist Hannah-Jones. How many poor black kids now won't get the benefit of that money because it was used to pay for Hannah-Jones' racist lies and shitty "scholarship"? These people are sick. "from what I understand, we count every baby that dies following a live birth, whereas other places exclude preemies or those that don't survive more than a day."
The UK has some weird practice of not counting something as a crime unless they get a perp convicted. I know that sounds off but I'm pretty sure it's that bad. Something I always remember when the "but Europe" crowd tries to compare gun violence in "sophisticated" countries to America. I also never realized how poor Europe was until I visited. Now their Sophisticate Pose reminds me more of the small town socialite who won't let anyone forget she was named Ms Something Or Other by the Elk's Club. They good ones just can't speak out against it without being Uncle Tom'd.
