65 > Well they probably have a lot of experience what with their tendency to jump out of the water and not bump into anything when coming down.

No, it's not just that a dolphin recognizes that a mirror is present. They do a test with an animal where they secretly put a mark on the animal's forehead and observe its behavior. If the animal tries to remove the mark from its own forehead, it's a good sign the animal recognizes the mirror is a reflection and not just another animal like it.

Not many animals have passed the reflection test. Elephants, some apes, magpies, a wrasse.

Posted by: bonhomme at June 08, 2021 07:13 PM (YYlyE)

79 If you're ever in Kaikoura, on the South Island of NZ, and you're good with jumping into a cold ocean, they have "dolphin swims" that are actually pretty neat. Dusky dolphins (small, mottled black/white coloring) swim by in pods, and if one can get down 5 feet or so and hover a bit - not easy with the buoyancy from a thick wetsuit - they'll circle you very close for a few seconds, their eyes clearly looking you over.

British guy on our boat had the thread winner. Biologist aboard had lots of interesting info about dolphins (e.g. they think that the leaping/flipping behavior is, literally, just for fun), and she mentioned at one point that the frisky mammals have sex ..... a lot. Constantly.

Brit says, perfect timing - "I know what I want to be reincarnated as!".

Posted by: EveR at June 08, 2021 07:49 PM (KbyWI)

My home has a pack of feral cats that live under it. Occasionally they loudly fight, or "fight". I can't actually tell angry cat noises from amorous cat noises and frankly, I'm not sure if the distinction will ever be personally important for me. They're there because my neighbor leaves out cat food on his porch for them. So the cats live under my house at night and then mosey over to his house for vittles.

Posted by: banana Dream

A cat rescue in your area can send a trapper to catch them and have them spayed/neutered. Veterinarians participate in municipalities sponsored programs to help with this issue. In my county though the fixed cats have to be returned to their original location. Fixed cats will have less fights and be less noisy. You would also avoid tons of new kittens every year.

The food they served at my high school was pretty good, actually. Basically just local ladies who cooked the same stuff they cooked at home. Maybe once a week we'd have hamburgers or hot dogs as a treat.

This was long before Federal Government Rules about making school lunches inedible were in effect.

The dirty little secret is that all body on frame vehicles will rust anywhere you live that requires salted roads in winter and they are pretty much designed to rust because they do not have weep hole or blow out fitting built into the frames.

Toyota trucks had a wicked rust issue for a few generations.

And I believe the Maverick is a Unibody design.

In those days surplus commodities were donated by USDA (since taxoayers had already paid for them anyway) to the schools. Peanut butter, tomato sauce, butter, cheese, flour, rice, etc. Yeah, it wasn't gourmet but I think they did a really good job with what they had to work with.

Those pics of Mooch's School Lunches making the rounds a few years ago are pathetic. Back in the day parents would have keelhauled those fuckers for even attempting that shit.

-----------
When Live and Let Die was published the African-American club scene was considered exotic by Bond readers. Although Fleming's description of the nightclub scene makes me think he did a little research to get things right. From Russia with Love has a few minor changes but is pretty much dead on adaptation. Goldfinger was pretty close too, although the movie did better with the visualizations of the caper and was less offhand about dealing with Blond sister #2. Pussy Galore was one of the first lesbians I'd come across in print or screen at the time, so I didn't know what to think! Honor Blackman did a good job & didn't take it over the top.

Rust is the serial killer of all metal.

The next new pickup truck I buy, I'm going to drill my own weep holes and install blow out fittings.

I've been rehabbing a Colorado, was underneath the truck and I noticed a leaf spring bumper was missing on one side, so I checked the other side, it had the bumper but when I touched it fell apart and fell off the truck.

I got the replacements, it mount to the low spot in the frame above the leaf spring, the bumper had a concave dimple.

So this bumper mount to a low point and has a dimple where dirt debris and water will collect, which will never dry and is essentially designed to rust off your vehicle.

I think I need to buy stock in Fluid Film.

354 I have a 60s straight axle F100 in top shape stem to stern, except the cab mounts and environs. Wasn't bad when I got it, but time takes its toll in rust belt states. There's no fix for that as far as I know, even "redneck" fixes. Somebody suggested going out West and finding a clean body somewhere and swapping it out. Seems like a lot of work.

Take the cab off, roll it upside down, and start cutting back the rusty metal until you find sound metal, and start welding back to what you need. Four hundred bucks for a decent wire-feed welder that uses shielding gas, and a few dollars worth of scrap metal. When I scrap out vehicles here at Peon Manor, I routinely save large flat pieces which have stiffening ribs pressed into them. They make nifty patch panels for floors. Also a supply of thin-wall square and rectangular structural tubing can be very handy. And go to a sheet-metal shop, and get them to make you a few lengths of "hat channel". Cross-section looks like you sawed through a straw boater hat. Weld it to flat panels to stiffen them.

355 Good for you. But you still have the Panhard. Right? Right?

Oh, yes. The car I sold is a '38 Studebaker Commander 4-door sedan that I bought out of a wrecking yard, years ago. Just a shell that rolls. They had a pretty Art Deco dash panel in them, though.

At least prior to commissioning, doesn't that mean his new name is "Seaman"?
