  • Blockchain mining has made it impossible to buy video cards for video, so what if they instead used hard drives?

Yep, storage market is fucked. (New Scientist)

Drives haven't disappeared, but bargains on large hard drives that were commonplace six months ago are gone, and supply is patchy generally.

I got myself a new 6TB drive (Toshiba Gold) last month to replace a failing unit in my NAS, because I knew this was coming. That drive is still available - but I'd now have to order it in from Amazon UK, because there's zero stock in Australia, even at double the price I paid.

The people behind Chia say that this will be a good thing in the long run as drive makers ramp up production, to which I counter, fuck you you fucking fucks.

Anime of the day is Trigun, a 26 episode TV series from 1998 that sadly has spawned no sequels shut up the movie doesn't exist.

The series follows the story of two claims adjusters, "Derringer" Meryl Stryfe and "Stungun" Milly Thompson, who are out to stop the depredations of Vash the Stampede before he bankrupts the insurance company they work for. I wonder how they would have dealt with Kei and Yuri.

Ah, says Pixy, I'll include that AMV, because while Konosuba might be trash that's a problem with the story and not the artwork, and I can introduce more readers to Saint Motel.

22 I just finished rewatching Trigun for the 100th time it seems.

It's one of the few series i can forgive such vast stupidity as Vash's pacifist attitude that causes so many people to die all so he can feel good about himself (sounds like the modern day lefty when it comes to all their pet projects like thr environment and police reform)

I'm with you with the movie not excusing, as it was clearly a cash grab that spit in the faces of every fan on so many levels. They could have easily made a prequel focusing on Vash, Knives, Wolfwood or the Gungho Guns, but instead they made that awful excuse for an extended episode that wasn't even original.

As for the original, it's certainly got some odd three "Best of" moments on my list, such as best Monologue (Wolfwood's Church Scene) and a strong contender for best OST.

23 During the Build 2021 developer conference, CEO Nadella explained that "Windows is implicit" and "it's never been more important." Nadella also highlighted the achievements of Windows and how developers are creating new experiences for 1.3 billion people to work, learn, connect and play.

I despise this line of thinking.

I don't want an "experience." I want to intuitively know how to use the start button, and I want to intuitively know where my sh*t is, and I want predictability when I do something. I also don't want you making sh*t consume more bandwidth or CPU power solely because people have increased their bandwidth and CPU power.

I dream of 2002 internet on modern systems with modern internet speeds. No flash before the page finishes loading, no autoplaying three videos at the same time, just POW, done, and if you want to look at an image or movie you click that image or movie. That would be so fantastic.

26 The World God Only Knows is once if those shows that you wonder what the hell was going on with the production.

Season 1 and 2 were just okay, maybe even below average, but the Godess Arc was damn near perfect. Same goes for Ef, Haikyu and K-On! where the first season's were generally really bad, but I'm thankful I torture myself by watching entire seasons as they all got so much better.

Exactly. The job of an operating system is to be invisible. It's like... You shouldn't notice the editing in movies. You shouldn't notice the typography in a book. 29 Latest Dumb Idea: Make Cops Ask Permission Before Drawing Their Weapon

**

From the link:

"Over the life course, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be killed by police."

That's a weird statistic. It's a shame that there's not something that could be done at the black-men-level to make people (I'm guessing majority black) less likely to call the cops with guns to come and handle situations that the individuals (again, I'm assuming the vast majority of whom are black) feel they can no longer handle without calling for someone with a gun to come and help.

I'm guessing the answer isn't to make the cops put their guns in safes and get permission to remove them. The answer is to stop calling the cops.

Your move, black community.

36 Chris Rock - How not to get your ass kicked by the police

***

And I know that's done in jest, but it's kind of mind-blowing to consider how simple it really is. Don't do stupid stuff that increases your chances of meeting a police officer professionally, and if you DO meet one, wait until your court date to have the argument. Don't run, don't fight, don't try to take his weapon, etc. Yes, sir, no, sir, and note the court date. Then show up so you don't get a warrant put out on you for another meeting.

It seems so simple, and yet in the videos you see - that BLM types promote - it's almost like the BLM folks can't even see or hear the police that everyone else can properly perceive. I'm not saying it jokingly: There appears to be something culturally wrong, and instead of addressing it the nation is enabling it.

It is a way people are bought up, to always act tough, to F Authority ect. It's the same community that apparently teaches kids that it's perfectly okay to run around and randomly punch people (mostly elderly) in the head all for laughs.

No one ever wants to ask why all these crimes and run ins with cops addres all towards one community (these racist cops are apparently mostly ok with Hispanics, asians, muslims and jews, that's done lazy racist) it's taught to them through their families, friends and entertainment, all which gets ignored.

43 Trigun really is a great anime. I was surprised, as I watched it with my kids (young teens to younger 20s), and several didn't like it, despite being anime fans in general. Not sure what they didn't like.

It does a good job of executing a common anime things: actions occur that don't make sense at the time, but DO make sense once information is later revealed to the viewer. It's great. A lot of anime goes a little overboard with the "struggling with ethical decisions" trope, but I think Trigun does a good job dealing with Vash's conflicted nature.

Can't believe you didn't use this old, but great, AMV for Trigun!

Absolutely. And those suck, and it would be interesting to be able to take the cradle-to-grave approach (impossible, but still interesting) and learn if those officers and that style of policing is in response to the same black communities demands for stronger, tougher enforcement back in the 80s because you're racist if you don't help our communities (remember that?), and then combining it with your demands for law enforcement without enforcing the law slowly driving decent employees out of the workforce because they can find a good job somewhere else. Distill the urban cops down to what's left, and you get the purest, most perfect version of the very thing you asked to not have.

Careful what you wish for.

I'm also guessing those sucky instances are 0.1-0.2% of the BLM outcry instances that happen constantly every day.

That # is approximately correct. My back of the envelope calcs came up with about 0.08%; close enough to the figure they are using of 0.1%, lifetime.

Cops kill about 1000 people per year, maybe 50% black, 15% of our population is black (~48 million), life expectancy of 72 years or so... yeah, checks out.

HOWEVER, the number of unarmed blacks killed by police last year was 9. That's too many, I'd argue. The best way to avoid getting killed by cops is to avoid pointing a gun or knife at them. Regardless of race.

73 So yesterdays mask observaations.

Started in Baltimore County, but very near to Baltimore city at Harbor Freight. Door sign said that masks were optional. But damn near 100% wearing of masks.
Traveled 17 miles away from the city into Harford County and hit Kohls, Target Royal Farms and Bed/Bath/Beyond. Again, masks were optional. About 1% mask wearing.
Traveled back into Baltimore County to IKEA, not far from the city. Back up to about 70% mask wearing.

An finally, IKEA in College Park, near DC. Masks requested for all. 100% compliance, and being so close to he nations capitol, it felt exactly like being at the spice bazar in Istanbul.
Seems pretty clear that mask wearing and progressivism are closely linked.

And on the personal anime front, I finished the AIC OVA Oh, My Goddess and was deeply impressed by the sweet and innocent nature of the romance that stands out from the more comedic and ecchi romances that I usually explore.

Of course any good romance in whatever genre depends on the balance of the partners and Kei & Bell love is pure, persistent and sincere enough that it overcomes its plain packaging and unfocused pacing to become a worthwhile fairy tale that can touch even the most cynical viewer.

82 I'm pretty sure we can do with about 50-90% fewer police. Most of their workload seems to be seeking out ways to collect revenue for the state.

84 Morning.

I'm probably the only fandude that doesn't have a giant hard on for Trigun. It's okay, that's it. It's okay.

And no sequels or spin-offs is a *good* thing. Sequels and spin-offs mostly serve to destroy and ruin. Don't ever advocate for the destruction and ruination of good things. Destruction and ruination is bad, mmmkay?

That one makes me smile and laugh like an idiot. Consistently clever and cleverly stupid at overturning expectations.

Definitely, in my Top Ten animes as this point in time.

88 I swear the prankster hackers are in charge of Microsoft.

You know the type. They build a level for play say for Doom (or whatever 1st person shooter game that can be built by users these days) and fill it full of traps and tricks and downright stupid stuff that no one can solve so they can't finish it unless you cheat and look at the map file. I hate those guys.

MS wrote books about how to design a user interface so that it was . . well USABLE. I know I bought one back in the day. And then will their exploration into computer pads they change it all. Of course some had to change due to the mechanics of pads and phones. Still they didn't have to throw everything out.

So luckily in found and easily installed distro of linux and have been using that since 2018 when I got back on the internet after a year of not having at home dsl. (that was fun. I used my library for absolutely necessary stuff like checking my bank balance and deposits and paying bills.)

But then I've hated MS since about when they put out Win 3.1.

90 OP, why hasn't there been an economical replacement for tape? Part of the reason hard drives were historically cheap is that the enterprise-servicing tape drive cartel was so devoted to soaking their deep-pocketed industry lusers. So people started using hard drives for backup.

92 So the Aerion supersonic bizjet is not, in fact, a thing. Which is entirely as I expected, since I studied airplane stuff in the 1980's and discovered that supersonic anything is hugely expensive and not all that valuable.

Next, watch out for a bunch of electric airplane companies to go bust the same way as the expected hoped for orders-of-magnitude improvement in battery technology just doesn't happen.

Posted by: Cybersmythe at May 31, 2021 09:08 AM (17UTy)

93 I just know that Microsoft will mostly fuck up the Windows 10 UI changes. There'll be a handful of actual improvements, at least twice as many things made worse, and a whole bunch of things changed for no reason at all except to be different from what came before. Personally, I think that's mostly new managers coming in that have a deep-seated need to put their mark on it like dogs and cats pissing on things to mark their territory. And those sorts of changes really do reek of piss. Get rid of the 'flat' affect they adopted because they wanted the same interface for radically different devices, real PCs (including laptops) and tablets or phones. After spending years perfecting the desktop appearance to make things easy for human eyes to pick out features, they threw all that R&D money and effort in the trash Well, at least this round of mostly useless changes will keep the sustaining teams busy fixing all the new bugs. Yay, team.

I disagree with both of these. For SS the money is there in abundance. The technology and engineering is common place. The hurdle is regulatory. There is work going on in the background that will take care of that. Not so much of a research & development thing as a wheeling & dealing with governments. The wide and loud demand is making it happen. This will be a relative near term thing.

Posted by: banana Dream at May 31, 2021 10:53 AM (l6b3d)

95 ...

Similar to SS there is wide demand for short haul taxi service from large hubs to disbursement centers for commercial business air traffic. The best choice for that is electric air transport. This is equal part a technology problem and regulatory. There is work being done globally. The tech issue isn't so much aero/propulsion as AI traffic control for multiple inbound outbound taxis on multiple vectors. That's where much of the work is taking place.

Posted by: banana Dream at May 31, 2021 10:54 AM (l6b3d)

96 But there is nearly a trillion dollars sitting out there in demand for those two items. It is a matter of when now, not if.

97 "Yeah, I need to clean out my PCs. I got a couple of cans of compressed air but haven't had the time to actually apply them. 110C does seem a little excessive."

A little pancake compressor probably would have paid for itself years ago if you're using canned air... just sayin'

98 As far as aerion surviving corps are scrambling now to slurp up the out of work engineers. Which is funny because a good % of those people were stolen away by Aerion. But that's the industry now. My problem is there was nothing I'd say novel about what they were doing. But obviously there were issues with design iterations and management of scope. And if you scoop up these employees that's what you'll be getting. Their failures. I think Aerion was to long in startup mentality. They didn't even have a loads group sending that out to a contract shop!

You're not taking ownership of the design process if you don't have design- loads - stress in house in close coordination even at the prelim stage they were.

103 1 - Ah, Trigun. I loved the aesthetics and the show when it was available for viewing, but honestly I don't remember much about it. Refresher time.

2 - I hate Microsoft with a passion, yet I'm stuck with Windows. Sad days.

3 - I really want to build a NAS with a "cloud," but always end up finding the how tos too confusing and putting it off. Kind of like choosing an email provider - trying to find one that takes custom domains and isn't a pile of suck.

Hopefully, this isn't an old enough thread that I'll be banned but idrive cloud backup works in concert with synology drives. You can keep a nice big raid 5 synology nas and it will be nightly synced with idrive. And idrive has pretty good rates. I'm using the basic family 5TB team plan for my family and it starts at an introductory $150/year. $199 after the first year.

Posted by: banana Dream at May 31, 2021 05:33 PM (K15O3)

105 Also if you don't want a cloud service the better synology drives will allow you to offsite backup to a friends synology. There's a linus tech tip vid, wait, I just looked it up:

https://youtu.be/mpxBmxj5mP0

... where he uses a "friend" to offsite a backup and never has to worry about paying for a cloud site.
