NSFW-Language This year marks the 80th anniversary of America’s entry into World War II. As one of our most studied conflicts, it often feels as if all the stories about it have now been told. This is not the case. As America marks a Memorial Day in transition — a de-escalating pandemic alongside rising anti-Semitism, political division and racism — an untold story from this long-ago war not only sheds a light on a crucial chapter in the Allies’ success, but also offers insights about the upsurge in hatred and xenophobia in the United States and abroad, along with the crisis at the southern border. It looks like there will be more and more traveling this summer as the Kung Flu lockdowns are coming to an end. Here's a guide to some tasty eating while on the dusty road. WhetherWhether we’re hitting them up during a marathon road trip or just a pit-stop during the weekly commute, gas stations are where America gets what it needs. For your car, that’s a few gallons of unleaded. For the rest of us, it’s something salty, sweet, crunchy, or highly caffeinated. But aside from a few constants (show us a fuel stop without jerky and Red Bull), the snacks, drinks, and often full meals available at gas stations vary greatly depending on where you are in the country; they’re dictated by local tastes, demographics, and plain old corn-fed culinary ingenuity. Here, then, Eater has compiled some of America’s favorite regional gas station indulgences, from gobs in Pennsylvania to breakfast pizza in Iowa to deep-fried burritos in Texas to Spam musubi in Hawai’i. Regardless of what your gas meter says, these are some of the bites worth pulling off the interstate for.If you are ever in Wisconsin and you need a wonderful cup of coffee or something to eat, The Kwik Trip is the answer. Why your summer vacation is suddenly looking way more expensive But this year I’m a little less excited at the thought of vacation than usual—and not because I don’t need a break. A glimpse at the data shows summer vacations are suddenly looking a lot more expensive. Prices Are Rising, Especially in Travel Bloomberg Businessweek) -- After years of unhappy reliance on Comcast Corp. and other carriers, Pleasant Grove, on Utah’s Wasatch Front, is turning to a new broadband option: a municipally owned company called Utopia Fiber. In the long run the government based broadband coverage will cost more than big biz and be an inferior product. Oh he took his "craft" to a new level. Kyle Alexander, known for his KGOD graffiti tag, fell from the Stone Arch Bridge into the Mississippi River in Minneapolis on May 1. The 27-year-old's body was recovered from the river at the nearby Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam around 9:18 a.m. on May 25, according to the medical examiner's report released Friday. VENTURA, Calif. -- The Majestic Ventura Theater was forced to close its doors during the pandemic, like so many other venues. Management decided to use the year-long shutdown time to remodel. During the work, crews made a valuable discovery. It is something that was lost more than 40 years ago. It was a trip down memory lane that Colleen Distin didn’t see coming. A wallet she had lost 46 years ago was found at the Majestic Ventura earlier this week. The historic theater has been an iconic venue since the 1920s, but the pandemic forced the doors to close for over a year. The only way people will be paying Month to Month rent is if all housing is owned by giant corporations (which lets face it, that's what liberals want anyway) a small 4/6 apartment house can't afford to not know if they're getting their rent next month, since no matter what they need to pay the government their ridiculously high taxes. I'd say they could charge them a high security fee, but places like NYC addres already making laws limiting security and first/last month rent, so that after the trash you've been forced to rent to (since background checks also address being limited eliminated) ruins your apartment you need to pay out if your own pocket. But again this is what Liberals want, where every apartment is either a ghetto run by the government (see every NYCHA building in NY) or is privately owned by Amazon.

From 2020 to 2021, the Indy 500 has gone from zero fans to 135,000. Although the latter is just about 40% of the track's unofficial capacity, it's still a huge number -- and lets Indianapolis Motor Speedway hold what is likely the highest-attended sporting event in the U.S. since the onset of the pandemic. Masks were required unless people were eating or drinking, but, according to social media posts and photos, it appeared that few fans were wearing them. The track has seen the same issue of masklessness. IndyStar reported last week that IMS officials acknowledged the lack of masking and said they would have mask ambassadors to enforce the rules. It does not have the same profile to sweep a large area like the traditional three blade generators, but then it doesn't kill birds either. Also the cheaper price tag and no moving parts makes it cheaper to install more. An excellent musical choice linked to the cabin. Local legend has it, that when Gregg Allman was shacked up with Cher, he rented a house around here. What makes it weird by societal standards is it's not leather. DIY reminds me of a coworker who got my job downsized (long story, basically she wanted a raise and the only way to do that was to reduce staff, and the boss at the time didn't like me much and so they worked it out and I got surprised), who when someone locked the last set of keys to a room in the room was ready to try to climb into the second story window rather than call a locksmith.

The acts taken by our elites in govt, academia, and the scientific and medical establishments in response to this loathsome lab-leak virus pandemic rise to the level of crimes against humanity. The level of genocide and industrial scale mass-murder. They should be held to account at a Nuremberg style international tribunal, or something of that level. And many of them should face the same dispensation as the Nazis. At the end of a rope. That letter on Denninger's blog goes through it all. Redbone rose to fame in the '70s folk scene when Bob Dylan sought him out at a Canadian music festival. He later performed in several TV commercials, including Budweiser beer, in which he lay on a surfboard singing "This Bud's for You.
++++ I think the folks at thisdayinmusic.com overlooked something in between Bob Dylan and Redbone doing commercials. From Wikipedia: He was introduced to a larger public as a semi-regular musical guest on NBC's Saturday Night Live, appearing twice in the first season. During the 1980s and '90s he was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. At least SNL is where I first became aware of him. Maybe if I hung out more with Bob Dylan I would have discovered Redbone sooner. Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at May 30, 2021 09:33 PM (hVqGz) 102

Tonight's movie was "The Palm Beach Story" with Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea, Rudy Vallee and Mary Astor and some actor whose name escapes me, but who had a funny comic bit as the would be boyfriend of Mary Astor's character and who doesn't speak any English A Preston Surges film, Sturges also did "The Lady Eve" and "I Married a Witch" among other films.
Joel was in other Preston Sturges films but went on to make westerns. He seems like he was a likeable guy in real life and another straight-as opposed to gay- actor (I keep telling you guys, that yes, there were and are straight actors. since he was married to the same woman for about 57 years (Frances Dee-who was gorgeous) and had three sons. One of his sons was Jody McCrea who was in those "Beach Blanket" movies and ended up as a Rancher. We saw "Beach Blanket Bingo" a few nights ago. Jody McCrea looked very much like his father and was a good actor. My son laughed at "Beach Blanket Bingo" It is nice to hear him laugh since he ends to favor heavy or strange foreign films which do not provide a lot of laughs. when people who are supposed to lead decide all they have to do is follow someone else's plan, and refuse to stop because it might reflect badly on them, it is guaranteed to be a horrific mess.
It makes it worse when the emergency is a pretext to do what they wanted to do all along. Everything Must Be Racist Department
This morning's Tulsa World had multiple sections - sections! - covering the 1921 riots and current brouhaha about then. The paper has had articles about the riots regularly for weeks. The TV has been covering it, too, I hear, although I don't watch TV. Even when visiting Mom, who does watch TV. Older sister called Mom today to tell her to watch some TV show about the riot. Really? We're 'way past media super-saturation on the subject! (BTW, Mom was 1 year old when the riot happened. But wasn't in Tulsa then.) Mom said she was going to send the newspaper sections to Sis. Hahaha What I haven't seen? Acknowledgement that from the marches and riots of the '60s to the BLM urban riots of recent years, Tulsa has not had a repeat of that awful event. There should be slogans like, "Tulsa, 100 years without a race riot." OR, "Tulsa, we do riots right." (Umm.. maybe not on that one.) Let. It. GO! So I went to Milwaukee (ugh) yesterday and saw some friends from college I haven't seen in 20 and 24 years. It was fine. They talked of getting together again and I'm internally like 1 hour and 45 min drive? It wasn't all _that_ enjoyable. And one has a sister moving near here this summer and I was like "Oh hey, I'm like 40 min away let me know if you are visiting and have a free afternoon" and then realized I didn't overly mean that. And I was sort of happy to find a friend who always texts me on my birthday and didn't wasn't dead, but I am not rushing to make plans to go to work now that his work load has let up and he may be free for a good number of months.
So yeah, either the depression is strong or I just don't care that much about people anymore. Or I guess the power of "and" can apply. Posted by: Bete at May 30, 2021 09:40 PM (Ojki1) 128

Something else I was reading that is getting me pissed. Our "public health" "official" and big shot medical establishment types are getting pissed of and ranting about guys like me. They don't like the fact that an ordinary person can go on the internet and read papers from all the medical and scientific journals about the risks and concerns with the Covid vaccines and come to his own conclusions and make his own determination based on such information. No, us little people shouldn't be allowed to read that, because it makes us think we're experts. We're not qualified to read this stuff, you see. We think we're experts. This is a problem they think. You see, we're supposed to do what they say. Just blindly follow whatever they tell us, 'cause they know best. Folks, any doctor you have that has this attitude, fire him. Such a doctor does not believe in the spirit of informed consent, and thus has no place practicing medicine. I had municipal-run utilities when I was young, and once again now that I've moved back to the region. One of the first things I noticed when moving away was that in other places the lights don't just go out from time to time and the power companies generally seem to somewhat care about building and maintaining a stable, redundant grid. When I moved back here, I knew that one of the first big strategic purchases that I'd be making after getting the job situation sorted out was a generator. Because in Tennesee it's not a question of if, or even when, but how often.
So, yeah, y'all have fun with your muni internet pipe dream. On the plus side, maybe the millennials will shape up if they start regularly losing access to their social-media crack. Posted by: CppThis at May 30, 2021 10:19 PM (8h1h1) 232

Good thing about the Zak Brown Band.

One of my favorite "man versus animal" stories is the dude that beat a 7 foot bull shark's ass and drug it to shore to retrieve his 8 year old nephew's arm that the shark had bitten off.
I believe when he dragged the shark up on shore a ranger shot it in the head, blowing the aquatic bastard straight to shark hell so that they could get the arm out. Pretty sure they reattached the kid's arm. Humans are pretty deadly, too. Shark f*cked around and found out. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at May 30, 2021 10:22 PM (QUdRi) 245

Pooky said he's pretty much going to stay in bed tomorrow, and I don't blame him. The concept of Memorial Day hit him pretty hard this weekend, because during his military career, he lost five guys he worked with on a regular basis. Two were to very rapid cancer due to radiation doses (that the AF refuses to admit happened even though Pooky saw the dosage records), two were to straight-up suicide (including one that we had seen being a happy drunk that very night), and one shot himself when he saw the police helicopter after taking his ex-wife hostage in a school. None of these were combat-related, but he's struggling with remembering them on Memorial Day since they lost their lives in part due to the military.

So the Booze de Soir chez AASI is a 2016 Tel Qasser Roussane, an oak-aged Israeli vintage. The oak is mild, the palate creamy and caramelized without being cloying. Lots of wildflower honey notes, just a whiff this side of sweet to be completely perfect, but really very good (to bre more illustrative, it's sort of like ....never mind..... I was going to render an extended metaphor on Sigourney Weaver's breasts but just never mind. You get the picture. It's a great wine). It develops well with air exposure, over about an hour, but has to be kept chilled to be appreciated properly. None of the nasty sourness that many oaked whites develop.
And after polishing off that bottle...I should add it's an Israeli wine, kosher as you Bubbie's kishka, from the Galil, and for those who care it is not mevushal so be careful at the Seder with it. Good night! Posted by: Alcoholic Asshole Shut In at May 30, 2021 10:35 PM (jhfQJ) 286

I can tell you about travel prices. Two years ago it cost $42.00 to travel on the PA Turnpike from New Stanton to the Delaware Bridge. This year, it's all toll-by-plate for $70.00 for the same 283 miles. If you want to travel all the way from Ohio, it's $95.00 for the full 356 mile Turnpike experience. Also, you get to pay their inflated prices for gas at the rest stops, since you're a captive and all.

On the internet speed article it just reminds me of when The Know(Rooster Teeth) had a podcast and they were whining about Net Neutrality. They were clueless and trying to relate it to gaming. And how without it online gaming could almost become pay to win, because you could pay more for a faster gaming specific connection. And I think later in the same show one idiot starts talking about how he pays for a higher speed from his ISP. Dipshits were whining about the possibility of crap they just proved they already had. Oh and also how Google Fiber was supposed to come to their city of Austin (surprise) but it had stagnated and some their ISP had increased their speed to a higher one for free. They were just typical woke commie idiots.

As an aside, last time I checked the top level internet exchanges points still measured their data transfer capacity in the low terabits per second. Which sounds like a lot until one considers all the "gigabit internet" packages the ISPs have been selling and how the system only works if most of the sold bandwidth is either unused or stays within that ISP's own lines.

I've been going through that paper linked above -- it's long (and unfortunately, English is obviously not the first language of the authors of some of the sections). They absolutely rip apart the (extremely) limited clinical trials conducted on the Covid vaccines. Basically, the scientific and medical establishment threw out ever protocol they have in this hell for leather roll out of the vaccines. From this limited data, the only population that one should even consider vaccinating are those at very high risk of severe Covid disease. And then, you apply even more scrutiny to those. First, anyone who has had Covid should not take it period. This is only increases risk. It provides no benefit. There is no debate on this point. Anyone who suggests otherwise is a fool or lying. Proper procedure would be to ensure this, and test for existing natural immunity before proceeding. Second, those not at risk for severe disease should not take it either. Wind energy is really situational--works great in the flat states but not so great anywhere else. And even in the flat states it can't really be counted on for the >99.9% uptime that modern commerce and industry demand. I mean, I guess one could make the argument that it would be okay if the proverbial trains sometimes don't run on time--see my above post about muni power, some regions are know how to deal--but the urban liberal NIMBY lords tend to go bonkers when they don't have their nice things on demand.

> Liquid Piston has a new design where the firing chamber is trochoidal and the rotor is that weird peanut shape.
So not an actual liquid piston, then? Those were a thing at one time. Advantage: essentially no precision machining needed. One application was large scale water pumping. You could build the cylinder out of wood or whatever, with a couple of check valves to control the water flow and some intake and exhaust valves to take care of the fuel. Intake valve opens/Fuel and air shot into cylinder/Water intake valve opened, causing water to flow in and compress the fuel/air mixture/Ignition/Water flows out the output check valve under pressure. Pretty cool. I think they were used in some remote areas well into the 20th Century. It's something you can build with just basic tools. The efficiency probably wasn't great. Finally, you are left with those at high risk for severe Covid. Maybe they should be vaccinated. The benefit would outweigh the risk (which includes known unknowns, but there are unknown unknowns too). But there's a problem here. The data is not complete. Statistically significant efficacy can only be applied to the whole group, which includes those at low risk for severe disease. You CANNOT say a damn thing about the efficacy for the high risk groups because you don't have enough data on that sub group! They point out something else. In none of these trials did anyone die of Covid disease. Control or otherwise. You can't say a fucking thing about mortality (ie vaccine reduces mortality) because you don't have a single fucking data point. The Grizzlies or "white bears" were pretty much unknown to science until Lewis and Clark poled up the Missouri in 1805.
The Indians were telling them stories all the way up the river, but the captains discounted the tales, assuming they were exaggerating. Besides, they were mostly only armed with bow and arrow, and indifferent muskets. Surely these bears would be no match for well trained, well equipped American soldiers. The natives had ceremonies very similar to preparations they made becore going into battle before they took on the "white bear"... It didn't take long before Lewis and Clark and the party found out, the Indians weren't exaggerating. In those days a grizzly bear like as not would attack a human at first sight, running at full speed. They are extremely fast and agile, as fast as any horse for short distances. And they are frigging huge. There used to be a creature larger than the Grizzly, called the Cave bear. Probably made extinct by earlier humans. One thing I don't want to hear about bears; "Well they were here first." So what. I'm here now. And I'm not going to get eaten. Posted by: Common Tater at May 30, 2021 11:31 PM (yUPCi) 387

Pretty much most of the accounts I've read, have Alaskan Big Game Guides carrying either a 12ga with slugs, or a .45-70 lever rifle as bear medicine.
Reports are that for an actual, charging bear, that the heavy "George Foreman" grade punch from a large diameter, heavy for caliber slug is proven a bit more effective in slowing, if not stopping the charge. Claim is that the fast pills such as a .300 Win Mag, while surely able to kill a bear, just don't motivate the beast to apply the brakes in quite the way that the thumpers do. Of course, I'd think the wisest course of action would be to hire SMH to be the Hunting Guide, from the relative shelter of her Abrams with it's 120mm main gun. The Marines will make them carry both the batteries AND the solar panels, because everything is stupid, including the politicians and the upper level leadership. The solar panels only work in the sunshine. The shit will be way too heavy for "she" to carry (unless "she" is really a "he") and she'll either get kicked out, or assigned to be the colonel's personal driver, and some infantey squad will have to pick up the slack being permanently short one crunchy. Still they carry a pistol. The guy who runs Buffalo Bore, Tim Sundles, makes specialty ammunition and has some observations on the webpage, he has shot a number of bears. He says you probably won't have to kill a black bear if you are atfacked. Grizzly is different. He doesn't say a .454 huge bullet is a required like a lot of guys, but they must be hard cast bullets and high velocity. Bears have thick skulls. A properly placed bullet and they will go down. the reason you go month-to-month is because you can't afford anything better.
Alternately it is because you are unlucky enough to have to travel from job to job because there is no position open for full time and you can't wrangle telecommuting privileges. I heard an interview with one of the brightest investors who claimed that working at trades will no longer make you rich, and this is true. As long as inflation eats your money, working and saving makes you poor, you have to invest in something that will float in value away from currency. It bothers me, both that this brightest light in finance didn't understand inflation, and that he never considered that the state of things that made him rich might not be a good thing generally. It's a Turkish made drone, and it has reportedly been used in Libya against some rebel force. From what I gather, these are basically those small quad-rotor drones fitted with explosives. Software inside makes the decision to find a human and do a kamikaze dive and blow him up. They unleashed a swarm at retreating rebels or something. Michael Flynn was speaking somewhere and when asked a question, agreed there should be a coup like in Myanmar, when the military takes over and invalidates the result of the last general election. All the Twitter idiots are now using words like "traitor" and "sedition" and "fomenting insurrection" and demanding Flynn be court-martialed, or arrested by the FBI and tried for sedition, etc, etc, etc, Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at May 31, 2021 01:04 AM (Mzdiz) 483

Random note for the horde: if you are waiting on purchases for various things... don't wait. Get whatever it is now, as long as it's something you need and you're not putting off something else more important. In addition to the continuing supply chain clusterfuck, the inflation is real: last several pieces of equipment I checked off my to-buy list had all increased in price about 30% shortly before I purchased them. I can never get over how all six of my great-uncles managed to survive WWII. Sure, they joined a bit late, but they saw plenty of action. Uncle Lester was a B-24 pilot in the Battle of Okinawa, and he called it "easy" compared to the ground troops.

Well, it has gone midnight here, and I am going to hit the sack. I spent the day sorting through a heap of steel on the ground, using the chop saw to reduce some welded assemblies of structural tube to pieces of dimensional steel that can be reused in some project. Scrap went on the truck. Some pieces were 100% scrap, but most had sections that could be salvaged.
I will pile some more scrap on the truck tomorrow, and then drive into Calgary and visit the scrap dealer. Scrap is way high right now, so I may as well make a dollar off it. Night, Horde. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 31, 2021 01:10 AM (DzJNx) 489

Posted by: will choose a nic later at May 31, 2021 01:08 AM (bTQ72) It was a huge factor, because the closer we got to Tokyo, the worse the Japanese were willing to treat their own people. One could argue that the Japanese soldiers didn't think of the Okinawans as truly "their own people" due to their somewhat impure ancestry, but they were certainly more Japanese than the residents of, say, Nanking, and we all know how THAT turned out. We saved so many Japanese lives by dropping those nukes. Posted by: pookysgirl, with Hex saying hi at May 31, 2021 01:17 AM (XKZwp) Posted by: SMH at May 31, 2021 01:17 AM (Ia2T7) 496

The planned invasion of Japan was called Operation Downfall. Two phases, Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. There was also a big deception operation planned to make the Japs think we were going to do something else. Olympic was the invasion of the Southern Island, and Coronet was going to be the invasion of the main part, Tokyo and all. They say geography pretty much determines this type of plan, the Japs knew it, and their defensive plan was an all-out defense of the southern island. Throw everything they had at that. If that failed for them, they didn't care. It would've been the bloodiest thing in history bar none. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at May 31, 2021 01:26 AM (Mzdiz) 509

Interservice rivalry was also a problem. The Navy wanted Nimitz to be in charge of the whole thing and the Army wanted McArthur. This would've been the biggest military operation in history, again bar none. There were plans to promote McArthur to "six star" general, General of the Armies, for this, to make it clear he was in total command. Really, there's some debate on what this 6-star rank would've been. They could have actually created a new 6-star rank for McArthur, called it something else, and still have General of the Armies above that. But the A-bombs mooted all that discussion and planning. I am watching a scene here I would not believe if I weren't seeing. We've got two new kittens here, now a little over 10 weeks old. There is a big 15.1 lb tomcat playing with them like he's a kitten himself. He's fixed, and this I can't believe, he's started displaying mothering behavior to these kittens. He licks and grooms them, lets them mess with him, and doesn't mind. We were worried about how he would react, but hell, he's become their Mama. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at May 31, 2021 01:41 AM (Mzdiz) 523
The tomcat, Jake, was sitting on the floor. The little male kitten started stalking him. The little kitten arches his back and does the sideways crab-walk thing, attacking Jake. Jake gets up and does a little bull-charge thing, butting the kitten with his head and pushing him to the side. Jake then runs, with the kitten chasing him. Now understand that Jake is a killing machine. He has caught and dragged a full grown rabbit to the porch, and was gonna try to bring him in the cat door. point of order: from what i have read, the the IJA et al had long figured out where and how the Home Island invasions would be conducted, and had based all their defensive plans, strategic and tactical, on what previous US attacks indicated we would do.
Downfall would have been a blood bath of a blood bath, with chemical weapons and tactical nukes (for various values of that term) thrown in, with NO idea of residual radiation concerns. furthermore, Himself, Herself's father, would have been there at the top of the main mast of The Showboat, BB-55, USS North Carolina, and likely would never have come home alive. i will never apologize for popping the mushrooms: we saved each other from ourselves.
