47 From what I've read, zeppelin travel was comfortable and swift for those days, and quite popular in the Continent and America. They used the inflammable hydrogen in the bags for lift because helium (which does not catch fire) was and is very rare on Earth and expensive to produce, whereas hydrogen (from water) was everywhere.

77 A lot more of that street is wet than I first thought. The sun is off to the left somewhere, so the left-hand building is casting its shadow on the lighter-colored block. So the darkness on the street along the curbs on this side of the buildings is at least partly standing water.

Bad press and customer trepidation likely played a part ("It's helium, not hydrogen. It's safe, not dangerous." is a nuance most people won't care about it), but airplanes are the more likely answer. Zeppelins were a transitional product and heavier-than-air craft are wildly superior.

Bad press and customer trepidation likely played a part ("It's helium, not hydrogen. It's safe, not dangerous." is a nuance most people won't care about it), but airplanes are the more likely answer. Zeppelins were a transitional product and heavier-than-air craft are wildly superior.

220 This painting is technically skillful but embodies the middle industrial phallocentrism of European art movements and expression. Every element of this piece is a celebration of toxic masculinity, produced by and for the consumption of the toxic masculine.

The Zeppelin - named for a man - is gliding through the sky as a phallus, thrusting toward the air surrounding Mother Earth in a metaphorical description of the industrial (masculine) rape of the natural environment (feminine). The bare trees turgidly pointing upward from the earth clearly represents the wizened and ancient patriarchy erupting out of the firmament after insinuating its roots into the earth mother.

Even the human subjects are all men, celebrating the transient achievements of men, while women are marginalized to the point of their utter absence.

This painting is a grotesque vision of Eurocentric patriarchal supremacism.

275 Gallery visit report:

I went to the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska with Captain Josepha Sabin yesterday. It is a small museum, with some outstanding holdings.

One picture there, The Smugglers Return, has been featured on the Art Thread, IIANM.

They had a well restored Titian, a Rembrandt, and some nice Impressionistic, American West and American Indian art.

The concentration of wealth in Omaha led to some direct buys in the 1900sm-1910s from French painters. They had a Mary Cassatt, Woman Reading , 1878-79, and a dramatic John Singer Sargent,
Portrait of Mrs. A. Lawrence Rotch, 1903. She looks like a battlecruiser and probably costs as much.

276 The USN's Akron, Macon & Shenandoah airships were actually too long for their own structures. Meaning, they suffered stresses from different winds affecting and buffeting the forward envelope, vs. the aft.

Anyone who has flown in turbulence has felt this, but a modern airliner is structurally far more substantial than an airship's minimal trusses and ribs. Which played no small part in the fact that all three of the aforementioned airships met their demise in the teeth of violent storms.

Blimps are smaller, of course. But are more durable, because that gas-bag has no internal structure, and hence, can flex and give to a far greater degree than a dirigible. Downside is, a blimp's speed limit is when the nose of the envelope deforms with increasing air resistance, at speed.

286 The issues with dirigibles seemed to be focused around weather. They weren't very fast and weather forecasting wasn't very good in the 30s. The U.S. ones tended to get caught in sudden storms, have no way of escaping, and end up being blown around til the structure broke. In a short period in the early 30s, they were considered as a sort of scout carrier due to the lightness of the contemporary planes and the short ranges of the time. By the late 30s the range, speed and weight of planes had vastly improved and dirigibles would have been nothing more than really good targets.

The only way we can continue bending the arc of history toward progress is to have difficult and crucial conversations. This training document seeks to initiate uncomfortable topics from a place of critical, caring confrontation of various elements of supremacism that still infect our culture.

Privileged white women, while often allies, also exhibit exclusionary behavior due to the internalized misogyny and racism that they posses due to those attitudes' universal and structurally significant presence within their cultural milieu. Discussions such as these help those allies identify their own privilege and work to overcome it.

People of color and members of immigrant communities have different standards, and these standards are at least equal to the domestic standards. These conversations help us build an inclusive community by eliminating the moral absolutism and double standards of the majority and helping women embrace all forms of love.

Back when I worked at Lockheed the Skunks Works guy in charge of all the buoyant aircraft stuff they were working on gave a presentation on the modern state of the art. He said, and I can't verify this, that they were actually not affected that much by gusts/ turbulence. They were affected by going across fronts because of the low thrust values that they once had. The biggest problem they had was the ground interface, how to get things on and off and where to do that, and of course ballasting. He said the new designs with the air cushion on the bottom can be reversed to suck it to the ground, so you didn't need a special tower, and they had a way to fix the ballasting.

If you are familiar with airplane design there's an equation that shows an upper limit to any conventional heavy lifting body aircraft. The lighter than air equation shows there's no limit and it could be as big a city conceivably.

Hubby. He went up in an airplane for the first time in 1934 at the age of eight. He'd talked his mother into letting him taking him to the airport for a ride in a biplane. The pilot did loops and spins and stalls and rolls, hubby hooting with delight the entire way.

When they got back to the ground, Dick's mom rushed the plane, snatched him out and yelled, "You're never going up in one of those things again."

He died with a little over sixty thousand logged hours.

The only surviving film of George M. Cohan, which unfortunately is in blackface, shows his style of singing and dancing (big strides from one end of the stage to the other, for example) is the style that Cagney used in Yankee Doodle Dandy. It occurred to me that there were people alive when the movie was made, maybe including Cagney, who had seen Cohan on stage and would have recognized the impression, like we see Rami Malek doing Freddie Mercury and recognize Freddie Mercury's mannerisms.

That is a logbook which few, if any, will ever match again. Consider, that a Senior Pilot, facing mandatory retirement from the airlines (at age 65) will likely have about 40k-ish hours logged.

Sixty thousand hours is mind-boggling. THAT is the guy you want up front in "the office", when things go pear-shaped in the air-space. A toast (covfefe; the bourbon lamp is NOT lit!), to the late Mr. Creeper.

437 47 From what I've read, zeppelin travel was comfortable and swift for those days, and quite popular in the Continent and America. They used the inflammable hydrogen in the bags for lift because helium (which does not catch fire) was and is very rare on Earth and expensive to produce, whereas hydrogen (from water) was everywhere.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at June 11, 2021 08:39 AM (/XOcP)

Major source of helium is oil and gas wells. US has been selling off millions of cubic feet of strategic helium reserve originally required for rigid and non-rigid airships (Zeppelins and blimps).

US embargoed helium for Germany in the 30s, which is why Hindenburg was filled with wasserstoffe.

468 Amarillo sits in one of the largest reserves of natural gas that is rich in helium, sometimes up to 5%. The US is Number 1 in production and export.

It is a very expensive process and the supply is driven by economics. I often hear of a helium shortage but that is driven by the current production level and not resources.

Crazy lady owner of a company I know is blowing $100K on a helium recovery system because she wants to virtue signal because "We're running out of Helium!!!" to look "Green". The ROR is abysmal but she's the boss and it's her money.

470 If you are familiar with airplane design there's an equation that shows an upper limit to any conventional heavy lifting body aircraft. The lighter than air equation shows there's no limit and it could be as big a city conceivably.
The square-cubed law sucks for airplanes but is great for lighter-than-air vehicles. (When you scale up something, the surface area increases by the square of the scale while the volume increases by the cube. So, if you take something and double its size, the new copy will have ~4 times the surface area and ~8 times the volume of the original.)

Put differently, you can design and make a model airplane that will fly but fails miserably when you scale it up to full size. It's a lot harder to make a model airship that is able to fly at all.
A 1000 cubic feet of helium will lift ~62 pounds. (A 1000 cubic feet of hydrogen will lift ~65 pounds.)

And displacing a thousand cubic feet of water will float a ship of 62,000 lbs.

A zeppelin that could carry the Evergreen's cargo would truly be a sight.

475 Insufferable Pedant here! And I am a fan of Dirigibles!
Hydrogen and helium are similar in lifting capability because you don't use hydrogen, you use the molecule H2. Two Hydrogens roughly have the same lift as helium because helium is a noble gas, so H2 = He.
Dirigibles became increasing impractical as engines got more powerful and aircraft more useful.
Dirigibles have a couple of flaws by their nature. Landing is hard in any sort of wind. Updrafts can force them to vent their lifting gas to avoid rupture, creating a cycle of rapid rise and then fall.
Hydrogen was NOT why the Hindenburg went up. It was painted in a mix of aluminum and iron oxides, aka thermite, on its cotton canvas envelope (exterior bag). Engine leaked deasil fuel, spark happened (probably from static discharge when landing rope hit ground), and the envelope caught fire.
The best dirigibles were the US: the Macon and Akron (with a nod to the UK R-100), both lost to disasters. Flying aircraft carriers! With the loss of their proponent, Admiral Moffit, the program ceased. US Navy wanted more battleships anyway (Navy always addicted to big ships).
Insufferable pedant away! I'm full of useless facts!
