The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“There were no injuries to any employees, police, or patrons thanks to the swift actions of the store manager,” Gloucester Township police said.

Quote II

“He was very lucky. It was a large tree, and it just missed striking him. It could have been very serious.” Assistant Fire Chief Joe Robinson

*

The Boss covered the traitorous bitch Liz Cheney earlier today. The perfect response:

Quote III

Quote IV

“It wasn’t written anywhere that it’s forbidden to bring a horse in. I couldn’t leave it outside. It’s an expensive horse and it would have been stolen from me.” Unidentified Israeli horse owner

Isn't anything made in the USA anymore? Even SMOD is produced in China.

A 22.5-ton chunk of space debris from a Chinese rocket launch is expected to crash back to Earth in the next few days and is believed to be in danger of hitting an inhabited area.

SpaceNews.com reports Beijing launched the initial module in its permanent Chinese space station last week, which was carried by a Long March 5B, a variant of China's largest rocket, that detached successfully, but the 22.5-ton rocket is now expected to make an uncontrolled crash back to Earth in the coming days.

According to the website, the Long March 5B is designed to specifically launch space station modules into low Earth orbit by using a core stage and four side boosters to place its payload directly into low Earth orbit.

However, the core stage is now also in orbit, which is leading to a likely uncontrolled reentry toward Earth involving one of the largest uncontrolled reentries of a spacecraft that could potentially land on an inhabited area.

Most expendable rocket first stages take place prior to reaching orbital velocity and reenter the Earth's atmosphere and land in a set zone. Other larger, second stages perform deorbit burns to lower altitude, reduce time in orbit and limit chances of collision with other spacecrafts or immediately reenter the atmosphere.

Cicada anxiety: It's real, and here's how to cope
TriHealth: Noise and size of Brood X cicadas can make anyone anxious

CINCINNATI — In 2004, Michelle Dillingham was a young caseworker serving people with severe mental illnesses. During that spring 17 years ago, Dillingham had a severe anxiety attack of her own while doing home visits in Cincinnati neighborhoods.

“And I remember when this happened,” Dillingham said. “I'm in my car and literally having to call my clients and say, ‘I am too afraid to get out of my car; you're going to have to come to my car to meet with me today,’ and feeling an extreme anxiety response.”

I didn't realize he was that old. RIP Bobby Unser

Bobby Unser, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and part of the only pair of brothers to win "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," has died. He was 87.

He died Sunday at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, of natural causes, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said Monday. Unser won the Indy 500 in 1968, 1975 and 1981.

"He is part of the Mount Rushmore of Indy," said Dario Franchitti, another three-time Indy 500 winner.

First Jeff Bezos was available, now Bill Gates is soon to be unattached.

Bill and Melinda Gates have announced their divorce after 27 years of marriage, saying "we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple".

"After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage," the pair wrote on Twitter.

They first met in the 1980s when Melinda joined Bill's Microsoft firm.

They have three children and jointly run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The organisation has spent billions fighting causes such as infectious diseases and encouraging vaccinations in children.

I'm not judging, but shouldn't the Gates been working on saving their marriage instead of telling us all how to live?

Lap dances are best not offered to the Po-Po when they are talking to you. Genius Award Winner.

APRIL 26--After offering “random citizens" lap dances, a tipsy Florida Woman asked police if they wanted to “bang” on the sidewalk and threatened to assault paramedics if they came near her, according to an arrest report.

Cops responding to a disturbance call Saturday evening encountered Olivia Taylor-Washek, 28, on the sidewalk outside a bar in St. Petersburg. Taylor-Washek, cops say, had been “stumbling on the sidewalk and attempting to give random citizens lap dances outside of a business.”

The arrest paperwork does not indicate whether any lap dances were actually consummated.

Seen at right, Taylor-Washek was “highly intoxicated” and stumbling, prompting officers to call for a fire rescue team. However, Taylor-Washek was not evaluated “due to threatening to punch paramedics if they touched her.”

I'm not certain if the following story falls into Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day. But it is cute.

An elderly husband and wife duo living in an assisted living facility in Tennessee caused quite a stir last month after busting out of a secure unit using Morse code, The Tennessean reports. The pair, who has not been identified, suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s and were living in a part of the Lebanon facility with an electronic door lock. But they baffled staffers after vanishing from the premises, leaving employees wondering how they could have possibly gotten past the secure door with an electronic keypad. Documents from the Tennessee Department of Health show that after the couple was found wandering along a nearby road following their escape, the man confessed to staffers that he “previously worked with Morse code in the military” and had simply deciphered the door code by listening closely to the sounds it made when employees used it. The facility was hit with a $2,000 fine as a result of the couple’s getaway, and it has since changed its door codes.

If the previous story isn't a Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day, The next story definitely is.

An 8-year-old boy from Hazleton, Pennsylvania, is being hailed for saving his 20-month-old sister, Leila Dempsey, from choking.

The young man had seen an episode of Nickelodeon’s “The Substitute” that featured wrestler and actor John Cena where he provided tips on how to save someone choking.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at May 03, 2021 09:12 PM (JZT2F)

commodity money provides little protection against government malfeasance or mismanagement. The first thing governments do when they need to raise funds is go off the standard, print a shitload of currency, and deal with the consequences later. Or, in earlier times, they borrowed from moneylenders and later sicced the mobs on those same lenders.

When I was a kid, I never understood all the noise they always included in nighttime outdoors movies or shows. We don't have crickets, or cicadas, or any of that shit, and birds sleep at night.

We could hear the sled dogs howling, and sometimes the wolves joined in. Other than that, I guess you could hear the outhouse door slam.

Nights are supposed to be quiet.

TIPS came up last thread, and I had forgotten how they work, exactly how the inflation adjustment is made.

It's done to the principle, the face value of the bond (or note, depending on what they officially call it). Say the issue a $100 note. The face value will be adjusted for inflation every so often, and the coupon rate will apply to the adjusted face value.

Rumors of her, uh, becoming a woman in the non-puberty sense have been around for a while but I believe people have found her HS year book. She's just not a good looking woman.
Speaking of which, if you go out on a first date with a somewhat mannish looking woman nowadays is it considered ok to lift her up and make sure she actually is a she?

Posted by: 18-1 at May 03, 2021 09:57 PM (JMMlQ)

183 Three years ago, we had a swarm of Cicada Killers about the time all the rage was Asian hornets.

Started to have them exterminated until I realized they weren't hornets at all.

Turns out they nest in the ground and they hunt cicadas out of the air, sting them (which paralyzes the cicada), then they drag the cicada back to their burrow and bury them alive with their larvae.

The cicada killer larvae feed in the cicada while it's still alive until they reach pupation.

They don't sting you unless you mess with them, and I thought it was pretty wicked that they eat cicadas alive, so I didn't bother calling the bug man. Just steered clear of mowing where they were swarming for a month or so until they cleared out.

I loved when the power went out and we had to rely on the fireplace to warm the cabin and to cook. My grandpa would tell stories by candlelight and my brother and I would exaggerate our fear at first, and then really become scared. 241 63 My wife is an Okie, and enjoys hearing the cicadas when we go back to visit her family. I can't stand the sound. I'm used to quiet nights with the occasional frog croaking crickets chirping, or grizzly bear tear some tourist apart.

I remember blasting grasshoppers of oak trees in Nebraska on the annual family vacation, then there was the time I hit the trunk instead of the bug, the BB went back past my ear and out of all imponderables hit and shattered their kitchen window. A foot in either direction and no one would have known anything.

We once stayed in a motel in Davis CA where we were continually serenaded by a cicada practicing for the Sacramento Symphony. Some searching discovered he'd set himself up a studio in one of the pockets where the bricks overlapped, in the room, about 3ft up. I was nice to him, he had some talent, think I dug him out with a toothbrush handle and ejected him out the door. I don't know whether he ever got that chair as First Winged Instrument.

Here in suburban California I have the usually gentle hum of the traffic on CA92 headed for the bridge. Rather have bugs and amphibians. Just not in the house.

257 240 Former President George W. Bush suggested the Republican Party needed to reach out to a more diverse coalition of voters if it wanted to come back into power.

George W Bush needs to reflect on how bad he was as President, how his general lack of judgment in staffing matters led to Rumsfeld, Feith, Wolfowitz, Harriet Miers, etc, before he thinks about lecturing us on what the GOP should be.

It's hard to tell at this point who's worse: the guy who set up the forever wars and failed to manage them properly and had to sell out any GOP domestic agenda to keep the Democrats funding his wars.

Or the guy who took advantage of Bush's failures to get elected and cram down a hard-left agenda - while still keeping us in those wars.

I came damned near to wiping out a herd of goats with the Suburban on Saturday. I was cruising through the Missouri Gorge section of I-15, going about 75 mph in the left lane, and I spotted a cop car and a minivan stopped in the left lane on the southbound side. Big Jersey barrier down the middle, so no legal requirement for me to slow down or move over. But I did slow a little. And just as I came abreast of the stopped vehicles, three large domestic goats leaped over the Jersey barrier, right into my lane. I missed the lead goat by less than a yard, I'm sure. Had I slowed down more, I might have hit all three.

Motorcycle dude on a long ride, lol. I say that because I knew a harley dude that had bottles of jack buried all over new jersey. Some buried along some rural highways, some at the beaches under the board walk, some in other parks, etc. He would stop at a store, grab a can of coke, go to one of the buried bottles, drink half the coke, top it of with some jack, have a nice road side cocktail, and continue on his journey. I personally witnessed a few bottles get exhumed. He's dead now, but there are definitely buried bottles out there to this day.

Well, there are some little homesteads in the canyon there, near the village of Dearborn, but one does not normally see domestic goats on a restricted-access Interstate. They are fenced. I am wondering if the goats had been wandering there for a while, and the minivan hit one, and the driver called 911?

312 So here's my dilemma:

Found out DD#1 is expecting our first grandchild, due in December.

I have been told that I cannot see her or the baby unless I get a COVID shot.

I have VERY SERIOUS reservations about this shot. I have Myasthenia and I don't want it to get worse, which I am afraid could happen after getting the shot (there are documented cases of people developing MG after getting the shot).

I am so leery of the long-term effects of this shot, and I am terrified for my grandchild, as DD#1 got the shot after she knew that she was pregnant. Can you say "DES", boys and girls? Does "Thalidomide" ring a bell?

I have been waiting so long for a grandchild. But I DO NOT want to get this shot. I just know that I am going to be that person who has an adverse reaction, because that is how my luck runs.

When I went into U.S. Customs at Sweetgrass to clear my vehicle for export, I wore no mask, nor did the agent, and nothing was said.

The probability of an infant getting COVID is statistical noise. The probability that you'll develop complications is low, but definitely non-zero.

The question isn't the bug, it's the daughter (but you already knew that).

My Oncologist gave me a whole prepared speech when I saw her in January. My saying I wasn't afraid of it through her presentation slightly, but she recovered and continued on with why it was OK to be afraid and how some of the other staff at the hospital weren't getting it.

I was like "I have a treatable-for-a-time-until-it-isn't cancer. What is this shot going to do worse than that?" And then I got the speech on how masks kept the Flu exposure down this winter, unlike say people too afraid to leave their house and thus be exposed.

Great Oncologist, but I wouldn't trust her on Virology as far as I could throw the hospital. And it is a very big hospital.

I believe the answer here is that your skin is GREAT at protecting you from diseases. So even if you sit in something gross - you aren't going to get something like AIDS that way. And I also recall AIDS dies pretty quickly outside of a host.

COVID though one could presumably get if you touch something gross and then your face.

Yeah I would find out. You don't "need" a gear drive to do new cams, but if it was opened and apart anywhere around the 20K mark it would be insane to not have done new tensioners for shits and giggles. Its literally a 5 minute job once it's opened to do new cams. A gear drive is definitely the way to go. There is one caveat though. On the later bikes harley decided to allow way more runout on their pinion shafts, something like .005, where it used to be around .001-.002. Gear drives don't like big runout, and the later bikes definitely have it, and you don't know how much you have until it's measured. Sooo..if....if you do have it opened to check the tensioners definitely have them measure the runout since they'll be right frigging there JUST to find out where you are. Too much and forget having a gear drive in your future.

In a book I'm reading set during the Irish independence war of 1919-1920, a group of IRA assassins kill twelve men in their beds in the wee hours of one single night, all of them police spies, either Brits or Brit collaborators.

The assassins were never found. Ayers was a piker, compared.

395 I believe the answer here is that your skin is GREAT at protecting you from diseases. So even if you sit in something gross - you aren't going to get something like AIDS that way. And I also recall AIDS dies pretty quickly outside of a host.

COVID though one could presumably get if you touch something gross and then your face.

HIV/AIDS virus cannot really live outside the body. So no, you can't get it from a toilet seat, or shaking hands with someone who has it, even if they have sweaty hands.
But you can get it from blood transfusions if the blood came from someone infected by HIV.

One of the biggest "documented" problems with any of the so-called vaccines, is the generation of the "spiked protein" (the S protein). If you have the virus, the spiked protein can cause blood clotting. Likewise, with the vaccines. The vaccines all trigger your body to produce the spiked protein, and then your body will make anti-bodies to attack the S-protein (which resembles the Covid 19 virus coat).
The spike protein can cause and has caused blood clot issues with some vaccinated people.

And my WBC that'd been trending up well beyond normal flattened out, bounced around a little bit, couple spikes and today it's actually in the normal range again.

Despite the fact that I slackened my exercise routine, despite the fact that I didn't bother finding another oncologist for eight years after the first one retired. It's still indolent.

443 Doing an Army Air Corps version of Band of Brothers would be challenging. Not that there's any lack of heroic actions to include, it's just that the "formula" is lacking - following a few key characters from one unit that was involved in almost all the iconic operations in its sphere of activity. That coherence comes from the history, hard to duplicate through storytelling. One reason "The Pacific", while it had its merits, just wasn't the same.

But on that topic, I recommend "Into the Cold Blue", an independent movie about the 8th Air Force, with an interesting angle. They weave the story of several vets around the real-life aspects of the making of "Memphis Belle", which was shot during the war - and several of the film crew were KIA in missions over Germany (would love to see members of "the industry" react to that factoid when told - doubt almost any are aware of it).

But one time I got with a woman who had hairy nipples, and yeah, that was kind of a deal breaker. Coarse, dark hair it was. Not peachfuzz.

Now suing your employer who said you had to get it or else, that's almost certainly on the table. But I am sure all employers got their proclamations cleared by legal counsel before issuing it and put in small lettering that there weren't actually making you do it to keep you job. Cause otherwise they are just inviting lawsuits.

No common in the US too, truncation of 'hydroelectric' - it means dams with turbines.

Once upon a time the PNW (OR/WA/BC) had so much more hydro power than they could use that California got huge amounts of it.

Then those places' economies took off and suddenly California doesn't have a pot to piss in.

Well, for many years, B.C.'s electrical generation was almost entirely hydroelectric, and Ontario was mostly hydroelectric. B.C. had the small Burrard thermal plant in Port Moody, IIRC, and possibly some Diesel generators for remote Indian reserves. Ontario got into nuclear in a pretty big way. Manitoba, Quebec, and Newfoundland also have a lot of hydroelectric capacity.

465 BTW I got the notice today that our bit of the class-action claim against BP Solar for shitty connections to the panels we bought in 2003 has been approved in total, so we net about $5K. Of course, the system cost $24K to install then, and it'll cost about $14K to replace the panels and the inverter on the existing racking, but

a) Our old panels were dead

b) New panels are so much more efficient that we'll get 2x what we EVER got out of the original installation.

c) $5K is better than $0K.

Maybe it was the old politician in him, but I think it was just the practical "get it out of the way" thing that if he shook hands with everyone, they would not feel it necessary to bother him to introduce themselves and he could get some sleep. I can't say whether it worked or not, because I was asleep most of the flight, but it seemed like people didn't bother him much.

Bituminous coal has a lot of volatiles in it that can be distilled off, and used as motor fuel. BBQ charcoal is wood that has had most of the volatiles distilled out of it. You might be able to make "water gas" by reacting burning charcoal with steam; you get a mixture of CO2, CO, and H2 that way.

Duke here in the Carolinas uses hydro power. The main thing is what they call pumped storage. You have high water reservoir and a low one. When you need lots of power at the peaks of demand, you let the water flow downhill and turn the turbines to generate.

During the off peak hours, you run them backwards as motors and pump the water back up hill. Note their actual prime movers from other sources generate all the energy. The reservoirs manage to store that and allow peak output to exceed the maximum of all the others.

It's a clever way to "store AC electricity".

Pumped storage can be very economical. With electric power your losses are non-linear. The higher the load, the more loss an addition marginal unit of energy causes.

By pumping at periods of low demand on the system, you can very efficiently pump that water back up hill.

If you do it right, knowing your daily cycles vs long terms cycles, you can be very cost efficient and get a lot of bang for the buck of lifting the water uphill.

I was just reading about a clever idea for pumped storage. Pumped storage has some drawbacks which limit the energy efficiency. Evaporation can be a big one. The water you pump uphill evaporates on you sitting in the reservoir. And there are others.

So, someone had the idea of doing it all at underwater, at sea. Your lower reservoir is a massive empty sphere submerged at great depth. You let water fall in and generate. Pump it out to store.

In 2017 some outfit successfully did a small scale test of this design.

If our decisions are meaningful, and the denominations mean something, it is not something you do on a lark. But for sure I am leaning to churches that have opened up. If a church is still shut down, I have to wonder whom they are serving.

Raimondo giving financial advice? That will work out great.

A bit of actual knowledge, Raimondo. Look up "real price" of gold, not nominal. You'll find that real peak of gold was in 1980. Real price has gotten close, but never reached it.

I take this as excellent confirmation that Stagflation 2.0 is baked in the cake. Even lefty trolls realize inflation is coming.

541 538,
you are picking and choosing. It was lower before and after those times. You are too smart to not recognize this. It is not just gold, it is crypto currencies. Those things are going gangbusters because no one trusts Biden. You chose 1980 because it was an historical high. Not cool.

544 Oh gosh, I just read that and it sounds like something Juan Williams would say, Skip, you know what I mean. And where is Mr. Miklos hiding tonight? Darleen must have found those moist panties someone tossed at him last week, perhaps he is on lockdown.

545 534, bullcrap. Show me one state that requires a birth certificate to vote. I will be waiting over hear. Secondly, the the thing about the left is they claim to be our intellectual superiors. But they demean their own voters by thinking they can't have id, and they can show up on election day. What a weird party you have there? It almost seems like a bunch of self prescribed intellectuals helping out the masses. The reality is, if they didn't lie to the masses, they would have no party.

there is an old gambler's joke. The guy said "why do you play in that game, it is crooked?". The gambler responded, " It is the only game in town". So I was responding to what I saw here. Some of the comments were worth refuting in my opinion. I didn't quote them, and if I was out of line, my apologies.

I like the seltzer water. I just tried the hard seltzer, and to be honest, it is the worst one I have tried to date. A coca cola product, so my concern for the company is nil. It was a fair review though, the stuff is gross.

553 548 the state I live in requires a birth certificate to register or id that was backed by birth certificate. If you can't register you can't vote. Try getting a drivers license without a birth certificate.

567 America is an ideal and a reality. Trump got the votes because his voter's trusted no one else. It is bs to call us Trump worshipers or Trump Acolytes. We follow the reality. Reagan is long gone and in many ways, that America is gone. Trump won in a fair fight. I think what I have learned is Trump is not enough. Sure it would be better if here were the potus, but the problem is very deep. And many one off Trump voters were never interested in dealing with it.

I often talk of this, my thinking the cutting off of undesirables from society ( like tossing of Twitter) was the beginning. But when taken to its far gone conclusion like denying employment or being allowed travel can be a virtual gulag.
I read this in High school but really want to read it again.

603 I suffer from a profound hearing loss, since I was 18-19 years old. It comes with severe tinnitus so basically I hear crickets and bells all the time, I doubt the Cicada's can drown out that.
But it is humorous hearing how others will now suffer from real noises that sound like Tinnitus.
My advice?
Turn up the radio and that will drown out the cicada.
