You know, the Sherman wasn't as bad a tank as it gets a rap for (and the T-34 wasn't as great as it gets credit for). A pretty average tank for the period, and effective in the role in which it was deployed.

25 The Sherman and T-34 were both essentially the same tank from a war economics standpoint.

Cheap to make indexed to capability and in extremes nigh disposable.

The Sherman was beloved by the soviet crews who got them because they had fewer transmission issues than the T-34 and had much better gun control.

America used to understand war economics.

39 The Sherman had a narrower track, which made it teh suck for off-road warfare half the time, but much better than the German and Russian tanks when you had a road network available and opportunities for rapid mobility. The lighter armor helped with that too (even if that made it a bit more vulnerable to enemy artillery and tanks).

All that said, if a German 88 was opening on my position, I'd definitely want to be inside a T-34.

104 The Long March 5B core stage's orbital inclination of 41.5 degrees means the rocket body passes a little farther north than New York, Madrid and Beijing and as far south as southern Chile and Wellington, New Zealand, and could make its reentry at any point within this area.

The most likely event will see any debris surviving the intense heat of reentry falling into the oceans or uninhabited areas, but the risk remains of damage to people or property.

Yep, regulatory capture.

If it costs $100 million to comply with the government paperwork to start a new cell phone provider, no one without $100 million to waste is going to go into the business.

It's pocket change for AT&T, but for some guy who might want to set up a few cell towers in his small town, it's a deal-breaker.

That's part of the story. More of it is recovery and repair rates vs abandoned and total loss casualties. In other words, how long does a tank last until written off?

Reading the reports and figures on readiness rates for each side during different operations is interesting. Some Panzer Divisions had more operational tanks at the end of some Kursk engagements than at the beginning. Most had a pretty much steady state during the whole operation.

Most write-offs happened when a side lost control of the battlefield. Recovery of broken vehicles (friendly and enemy) often happened during the fight.

157 That was the real reason behind the constant German search for the super weapon. Sheer lack of numbers and production capability. You can see a parallel in the Cold War where the West tried to build higher tech stuff while the USSR went for numbers as being a dictatorship they could short the private sector for the military sector. And the Nazi dream of world conquest was always kind of silly as there were never going to be enough Germans to control the world. Certainly not by their dream of force. You could see a parallel like that today if you thought about it.

Viet Nam also just celebrated "unification day", meaning the end of the Viet Nam "civil war' (what we referred to as the Viet Nam War), where da North (with Soviet Arms) invaded and conquered the South, and began "re-education". Viet Nam has actually changed a lot since then, and is not nearly as harsh a dictatorship as was imagined it would become and remain.

I don't know if any of you have been following that story about two Loveland, CO cops who dislocated the shoulder and broke the arm of some frail 70-something woman with dementia. She had walked out of Walmat with stuff she hadn't paid for.

They get the stuff back and let her go, and these two cops come and arrest her. Any fool could've seen that woman wasn't right in the head. She also had sensory aphasia, which meant she didn't process hearing too well.

Turns out the two cops, male and female, were lovers and shacked up.

Those two and a third cop have resigned now.

We did make a lot of gasoline engines, which made building M3's, M4's, M5's and M7's (and later M10's and M18's) and M24's mass produced. If the war had gone on longer, we would have seen a lot more of M-26 Pershings, which would have been more than a match for Mark V "Panthers" and would have been gunned up enough for Tiger 1's.
The diesel that powered T-34's broke down a lot. It was not unknown for them to go into battle with "spare" engine strapped to the back of the tank.

285 Hey everybody. Hey ONT! Hey WeirdDave!

I just listened to the original album that has the much-ridiculed hit song "Sometimes When We Touch" on it, which is called Longer Fuse, by Dan Hill. Came out in 1977.

Ooh boy. When you look up the phrase "crazy over-earnest" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Dan.

Just looked him up on Wiki. He didn't do too poorly for himself. He later became a writer and producer for Celine Dion, among others. He also apparently had at least a tiny bit of testosterone as Wiki says he contributed a song to the First Blood soundtrack.

aluminum/magnesium alloy, and the original variant was gas powered. they went to diesel in the A1, but there were several problems with that: 1. the fuel was used to cool the injectors, so it got warmer, thus more flammable. 2. MOGAS and DF-2 routinely got cross contaminated, lowering the flash point (ask me how i know). 3 the hull was still aluminum/magnesium, with ammo, explosives, etc, inside. and the fuel tank was INSIDE until the A3 version.

The Mk 3 and early Mk4's were equipped with the low velocity 50 mm gun. I have a book by a German panzer general who remarked "This went a long way toward losing the war for Germany"
Later, the Mk4 "specials" were equipped with the much superior 76 mm high velocity gun, and heavier front armor mantle (the same gun as the Mk 5 "Panther"), but it did make the tank (Mk4) unbalanced (bow heavy) and slower.

315 Clearly, Germany had the capacity to build Panthers and Tigers from June, 1940 - June, 1941, just not the concept. If it had done so with any kind of industrial alacrity (which Speer demonstrated Germany was quite capable of), Barbarossa probably would've turned out differently.

Another thing I wonder about is what effect not embarking on the ill-fated London Blitz and Battle of Britain would've had on Barbarossa. I don't have the #s, but Germany lost a staggering amount of aircraft and experienced pilots.

I think Hitler expected Britain to knuckle under to the "terror" of bombing, etc. It was actually a pretty near run thing. If the Luftwaffe would have continued to concentrate on hitting RAF airfields and hitting radar stations, it all might have turned out differently.
And really, the German generals at the front of Barbarrossa were too timid. The Russians had nearly been run out of armor by October- November 1941, and if they (Wehrmacht) had actually driven an armored thrust directly at Moscow, the Soviets might have collapsed. Stalin was making plans to flee Moscow, and taking Moscow would have cut rail traffic in the USSR in half

But when there is no food, fuel or munitions to be provided by what used to be a supply chain?

They're orphans. With no hope of gruel.

Oh I'm sure they'll have a Donner party if need be.

Sigh.

370 Well. I see Newsmax reached some sort of settlement with Dominium, and issued an apology/retraction. Probably handed them some cash too.

Captain Hate will have a new place to shun, like American Thinker.

Look I get it, it looks like bending a knee. It IS, in a way. I look at it as a lost battle, in a much larger war.

We have damn few allies; summary executions don't strengthen us.

Posted by: GnuBreed at May 01, 2021 02:22 AM (F0YaR)

371 Pixy. I'm to the snoozer, but thanks. DO drop me a line at the addy in my nic? I might be able to leave a quasi-valuable contribution, your way.

I can't code my way out of a Post Office Box, but have had great success along the way, at directing IBM-AS 400 writers as to what was needful and productive as to their end products.

RPG III, I didn't speak, but did cut through the B.S. to get to the bottom line. I don't mean this insultingly. But I can navigate clear courses that talented coders can steer to, and prosper.

Bending the knee, indeed.

Newsmax is off of my list now, period.

J.J. Sefton is my list.

How about a nice selection of MIL-SPEC hydraulic fluids, to meet your automotive, marine and aircraft needs? Natural or synthetic, low to high pressure, cryogenic cold to melting steel hot temperatures.

You missed my gist. Newsmax and OANN are two rising stars in the conservativesphere. AT is a valuable voice. I don't abandon them over the occasional lost legal battle.

Again, I stress, we have few allies. Romney or Cheney or NRO? Fuck them guys/gals. Way past lost causes. But until you've faced a legal onslaught by well funded Leftoids, I have a more 'liberal' viewpoint.

375 well, *that* was fun... beating on the door about midnight. turns out it's the GILF next door who had the alarm go off, set for zero delay entry, and thought she had an intruder.... so she rabbited over to our house.

2 security patrol guys, 4 LAPD units 8 cops, and the house is now clear. and my buzz is totally destroyed. even MOAR bummed because i couldn't figure out if she was braless under the off the shoulder top, or just wearing a strapless one. what a tease she is.

the most vulnerable point on an M1 tank is the fuel tanker in the LOGPAC... although the turret exhaust fan vent, if you can get to it, doesn't look very bullet resistant.

381 Chilly morning, (37) but supposed to hit 80 this afternoon.

Planned to cut mom's lawn today but my brother showed up yesterday and did it!

383 I bought basil and put it in my greenhouse, it's struggling with he chilly temps in morning.
Stopped on way home got 2 Anaheim pepper, 1 sweet and 1 tomato and planted them all in greenhouse.

386 Am looking forward to garden tomatoes. No longer a veggie garden here, but both of my brothers have big gardens. I get the benefits without the work

Posted by: My life is insanity at May 01, 2021 04:01 AM (Z/jzm)

387 My hot peppers will do fine, will. Be getting them until October but sweet peppers are a fools errand, if I get 1 tiny pepper I will be amazed. Did stop at a nice garden center and was a little more price but hoping it will be the change needed.

Posted by: Skip at May 01, 2021 04:08 AM (Cxk7w)

388 I remember dad growing sweet peppers. Some years were better than others.
