Conservatism’s Overdue Divorce From Corporatism & Its Sleaziest Characters
[Buck Throckmorton]

Why is Target’s CEO becoming such a prominent advocate for woke, left wing politics?

Target CEO Brian Cornell says George Floyd “could have been one of my Target team members”

Target CEO Brian Cornell says George Floyd’s murder pushed him to do more about racial equity, diversity

Perhaps it’s because he is looting the company, and his becoming a prominent social justice warrior is an attempt to distract and seek protection from the redistributionists on the left.

Target CEO Brian Cornell's total compensation rises to $77.5M

One of the great things about the political realignment going on right now is that conservatives like me no longer need to hold our noses and defend capitalism’s robber barons and parasites, just because we are all opposed to socialism. We conservatives are still very much in favor of free enterprise, but with corporate America now aligned with socialists on virtually every left-wing social issue - and actually engaging government to snuff out their smaller competition - corporatists will not have me defending them if the left sends them to the gulags, figuratively or otherwise.

Just because of my passionate opposition to socialism, I used to try to defend vulture capitalists like Mitt Romney, who gutted companies for fun and profit. Likewise the Wall Street investment bankers who pushed job-destroying debt on companies run by CEOs who could be seduced by confidence men in fancy suits. I tried to defend outsourcing as preferable to bankruptcies, but every job sent overseas just sent more wealth to the C-Suites. When I saw private-equity groups buy successful small businesses and then fire all the employees, I tried to convince myself that these people were not evil, but that they were just the visible faces of capitalism’s creative destruction.

I ultimately realized that these are people that cannot be defended. They prosper by deliberately inflicting harm on good people and organizations. They don’t create wealth, they re-allocate it to themselves, and leave a trail of destruction in their wake. I am glad that they are on the other team now.

Some years ago, my wife worked for a prominent company that imposed a massive pay cut on most employees so as “to save the company.” As our household took a pay cut, she said her employer was evil. At the time, I tried to defend the company and its executives, because a pay cut was preferable to her losing her job altogether. But almost immediately after the pay cut went into effect, the executives of that corporation showered 7-figure and 8-figure bonuses on themselves “for saving the company” and as “retention bonuses.” And shortly after that the company went into bankruptcy reorganization anyway. In retrospect, the wage cut was just a delaying tactic by the executives. It gave them time and an excuse to loot tens of millions of dollars from the company before a bankruptcy judge could prevent them from accessing the remaining cash in the bank. My wife was right – they were truly evil people.

One more thing on CEO pay, libertarian apologists will mumble that a business can compensate its CEO however much it wants, and further, that it’s not really salary because he merely exercised stock options. Uh huh. To which I can counter-argue that if a business is going to stick its nose into politics affecting me, then I can seek to impose laws and regulations on that business to cripple the CEO’s ability to loot a publicly-traded company. And – if it’s just “stock options” and not real pay, then every single Target employee can also receive $77 million of this fairy dust compensation too, right? Of course not. Target’s CEO looted $77 million of the company’s capital, and there’s not near enough capital to do that for every employee.

There are truly evil people in in the business world, just like there are in any profession. And right now, our corporate class is led by the worst of them. Woke corporatists are like male feminists, their left-wing advocacy can serve as a mask to hide the awful character of who they really are.

6 I'm not smart enough to write something like this, Buck, but I agree with every word.

At least some of the "robber barons" of the past felt they needed to use some of their wealth to benefit society (Carnegie comes to mind), though most - Gould, Vanderbilt, Astor - did not.

Our "gilded age" class exists only to enrich themselves and destroy the foundations of the country that allowed them the freedom to prosper. They are, in a literal sense, enemies of the state and ought to be treated as such.

9 Another point:

Since the stock market is being propped up by fed intervention in the form of injected liquidity of tens of billions of dollars a month, it's now in the corporate self interest to advocate for those measures to continue.

Once they stop, the stock prices of every major corporation will start taking massive hits.

Having previously worked for a prestigious company during the time when they went from independent, to bought out by a Bain Capital-like corporate raider (with a nice golden parachute provided to the sellout CEO, of course), I have nothing but contempt for these pirates whose business model is raping companies for their best assets and ideas and sending the remaining jobs to China. Plus the humiliation of forcing you to go through a reeducation where they impose the pseudo-cult of Lean and Six Sigma onto your company.

39 Not to get all tinfoil hat, but some of the current top CEO class are interested in transhumanism (that weird stuff Epstein was into w/the MIT lab and people like Gates). Hard to know how seriously to take this, obviously, but the premise is the alarming part. With the green new deal push it seems to be about reducing earth's population in order to save the planet. That's worse than wanting to enslave the masses IYKWIM.

I know, it's crazy talk, and it feels weird to even type such slliness. I just get a bad vibe when Biden comes out and says he wants to reduce meat consumption by 90% (and right after conde naste's epicurious falls in line), and the heavy-handed puch to vaccinate all the people. In a true free enterprise system, a company that over rewards its CEO will lose out in some other way that a smarter company will use those funds and eventually have to change course or go out of business.

But the problem is we've been changing into a corporatist system, where opposition to the cartels running everything is stopped by their control of the government. As the simplest example, look at Gab and Parler's attempts to compete against Twitter.

Of course we already have laws against this right now...but no one to enforce them.

I can literally see a target from my balcony, it's the closest store by far. I never set foot in there, even without the whole bathroom thing. The store gives me a weird vibe, and the cash register layout makes no sense.

It's designed to piss people off, since our imports tend to cut across the line to go to another register, not noticing that there's an actual line that forms between the way they split them up. The last time I was in one, some drunk imports started a fist fight right in the middle of the register hell. I don't know how many families there were, but all the females are pregnant, and screaming at the tops of their lungs for death as the guys duked it out.

I set down my carton of milk and split. Now, even if it's just a freaking carton of milk, I'll drive a few miles to go to a normal market.

45 Part of the problem with corporations (modern mega-sized, publicly traded ones) is that effectively no one owns them. In theory all the shareholders own them, but such ownership is so diffuse as to be meaningless. I mean, if one guy owned Target Corp, do you think CEO Brian Cornell would be able to justify pulling a $77.5 Million/year comp package to that guy? But since Cornell only has to sort of justify himself to people that also are not above a little looting (i.e., the Board of Directors), kaching!

The way to understand it is that the CEOs and management are the same corporate-political class that infest the upper levels of bureaucracy and politics. Often they move between the two seamlessly, which means the mindset and the tactics are the same.

This is basically the story of the West. We built a corporate and political class who knew how to game the system to get ahead, but relied on the economic, political, and social capital accumulated by previous generations to keep things running. Unfortunately that capital has been almost completely depleted, the organizations are massively overleveraged, and management is trying to cook the books long enough to loot what they can and abandon the whole thing before the shareholders riot.

52 Regarding stock options, you can't pay a bank in stock options. Technically a company could grant every employee $77M in stock options(though usually the value in these figures is after the stock has appreciated). It just wouldn't be worth $77M anymore after it's been granted. Options are more real than Bitcoin but they don't represent a company's existing resources. Arguably the represents an ability to access capital in the market in a secondary offering.

81 Perhaps it's because he is looting the company, and his becoming a prominent social justice warrior is an attempt to distract and seek protection from the redistributionists on the left.
++++
Gotta disagree with you on this. I think the entire premise is wrong.

First, he isn't looting the company. His board of directors fully endorses his compensation. If the company is being looted, it ain't by the CEO - it's by the entire controlling clique.

Second, these people don't care about tax rates or redistribution. That isn't the game they're playing anymore, because so much money is involved now that is essentially doesn't matter. Just like how megacorps love them some massively expensive regulation because it keeps the upstarts out of the way, the same kind of dynamic is at play here. They want *more* redistribution and controls. They want more of everything because it keeps competitors away and enriches them so much that the tax rates become irrelevant. Do you think they care if they end up having to pay 50% more in taxes when they're raking in 100%+ more in compensation courtesy of their machinations?

And that doesn't even consider ideology.

That would explain the worldwide panic and shutdowns , wouldn't it. If it was engineered, manipulated, trajectory is unpredictable. Also explains why the gov is staying mum - its involvement is not pretty. Also possible that Trump was not told by those from in the US govt that were involved and extent of involvement.

--

Oh no, that's simply heartbreaking. Him wanting to stay well to take care of his wife. Prayers to you all, olddog. Although everything is different, my aunt was 89 and decided to go through surgery, even though the doctors were trying to gently dissuade her. She made it through surgery, but her heart failed and she wound up in ICU, passing away within hours. Surgery is very hard on the elderly.

162 >>> Yeah the only other time it annoys me is if they deep six a business and walk away with a fortune for having destroyed their company. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at April 30, 2021 02:53 PM (KZzsI)

A CEO for a company I worked for had company-wide meetings where first, people shuffled into the hall, he showed a big photo of the ark up on supports. He explained that "some of you are not going to make it into the ark". They laid off about 10% and got another 5%t through attrition and drug use tests. For the next meeting, the photo of the ark showed it was raining. He again stated some of you are not going to make it. Around 30% were then walked out, 25% on one day. He then had a meeting and the photograph of the ark had waves and the boat was being tossed about. There were so few left, some departments which provided necessary functions were completely gone. There were work stoppages which led to order cancelations.

In the last meeting, the ark arrived on the mountain top under rays of happy light. The company in its leaner and more valuable state was then sold to a multi-division conglomerate who then joined it with their competitor. The executive team made so much money.

Not the CEO, but reminds me of a divisional meeting at a former company. A lot of our functions were being gradually outsourced to India or moved to the home office. Our building was more and more sparsely populated. Someone asked the SVP hosting the meeting about the continuing influence on outsourcing and some of the issues we had with it (namely, availability during what is night shift in India). He said - and this is a quote, as it's seared into my memory - "sometimes we in executive leadership have to take off our patriot hats and put on our efficiency hats."

Q: Is a drug test required as part of my application?
A: In accordance with Target's Drug Free Workplace (DFW) Policy, certain roles may require a mandatory drug screen as a condition of employment. If the role you've received an offer for requires a drug screen, you will be notified at the time of offer and be prompted with next steps during the screening process. The drug screen must be completed within 24 hours of accepting your job offer. Failure to complete a required drug screen in the allotted time may result in the withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.

226 If it weren't for the fact that the Democrat party (for the most part, not all) has little real organizational capacity (unlike the Nazis or Bolsheviks) I'd be more worried.

Of course they can do a lot of damage in directed ways and to bad for those in the way but this will fall apart sooner than you think. Compared to other tyrannies/coups/juntas these guys just don't compare.

There will be an awful lot of infighting that we won't see except for the outer ramifications. Now the winner of THAT will decide how bad things really get.

Right now they're trying to intimidate those who might be able to organize some effective push back by terrorizing the base that the top organizers will need. Many are just waiting for the situation to solidify and the chance to deal the fascists and BLM. LE will be smart if they just back off and let it happen. Not take sides.

Look to the summer for this to gell into something that can be predicted. Right now they're just thrashing around.

Don't think refusing to "defend" private sector from ..... well whoever it is that remains that actually wants "socialism" is kind of irrelevant when the action is in joint private/public looting of the society, social control, oligopoly farming, etc.

238 Oh and when I say organizational capacity I'm referring to the ability to actually enforce discipline on their troops and cadres. They're good and protests and riots but those are chaotic and nothing is accomplished with them.

They need to use their street militias in a more organized way and they don't have the people with the knowledge and charisma to do it.

In a particular local group there's maybe 2-3 people that everyone knows and respects and will obey. Get to larger groups and there's too much competition at the top. When that sorts out then we'll see things happening on both sides.

He said this morning that he is a Capitalist with a heart, lol. That he also believes in progressive taxation and that he would be happy to work for the government for six months out of the year because he believes rich people should give back. Then in the next breath he talked about wanting to leave his money to people he chose and he didn't want the government doing it for him. Said he started a foundation that he donated $50M to provide full ride scholarships to POC who "needed a break". Talked about his feud with E Warren over details of tax plans, he wants to eliminate loopholes such as carryover interest, but her descriptions of what actually goes on with tax deductions is wrong. Said that Trump had some decent economic ideas, but since no one pushed back on his "picadillos" Coopersmith decided to change direction and voted for Biden. He was registered as an Independent , then Democrat, now he's back to independent. Thinks 50% tax rates on the wealthy is fine and deserved, but more than that is confiscatory.

The concentrations of the past were far less state-enabled and state-directed than they are now.

The breakups and diversification should have happened in 2001 and they were checked and stopped by Fed policy. It should have happened in 2008 and it was checked and stopped by Fed and government policy. I don't think the state (in this country, anyway) has ever been so deeply involved in enabling continued consolidation before. They do everything they can to make it more and bigger, and do nothing to stop it even when - such as in the case of big tech monopoly constraints - there is obvious reason to intervene.

Yup. Resiliency is by definition inefficient, since it means resources are expended to prepare for situations which may not occur. The problem is often that long periods of disuse lead people to assume that such events will never occur, so they start "cutting the fat," right up until the weather turns and all of a sudden the fat stored up turns out to have been important.

I saw an article yesterday that the debate teams from Historically Black Colleges pulled out of a major competition because the other Universities were just too racist.

These are people who use the word "wypipo" to refer white people so search engines don't pick up on their racist bullshit.

316 I don't understand the need to go over the top in praise for Floyd. It seems you could talk about how the Chauvin should be prosecuted without turning a known thug into a saint.
Posted by: Northern lurker

It's part of the kink.
You must accept that George Floyd was a saint and martyr, even though he was a fentanyl/drug addict, worked for a crooked bar (where Chauvin also worked part time) and had a criminal past.
You will learn to revere George Floyd as a saintly Big Brother to you, or face grimmer alternatives.

And...so it goes.

Well, we all know it was just political smack talk from the Imbecile Biden. Yet, the Media is the interface between the Biden Junta and all us cattle out here.

I have not a clue about what the "Long Term" strategy of the Biden Junta is, but the first four months is destructive stupidity. I imagine it will get a lot worse.

322 If I ever shop at Target again, I'll be sure to arm myself. Apparently their employees are all just a bad day away from pointing a gun at my pregnant wife.

Posted by: Anotheranon at April 30, 2021 05:34 PM (8Ze5j)

323 From their ads, it is clear that Target wholeheartedly endorses segregation and aches for America to return to the bad old days before Brown v. Board. So I will never set foot in a Target again.

Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at April 30, 2021 06:52 PM (TnVCV)

324 The thing is, Target has a strict drug policy and George may have been on the team but the first time he went to the hospital for drug related problems he would have been fired on the spot, similarly the first time George tried to pass a fake $20.00 bill he would be fired, again the first time Gorge took and unlicensed handgun and aimed it at a pregnant woman again he would be fired.
So George may have worked for Target, he would not have worked there long unless Target makes a habit of employing drug abusers, Opioid addicts and gun crime perpetrators.
