No movie thread today. As far as I know.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1343)

Goal: Black can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: The g3 pawn is weak, and can be taken

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1330)

Hint: Throw everything into an attack on the open h-file

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1335)

Looking at the board, this is one of those times when going after the rook on a8, as White evidently did, turns out to be A Very Bad Idea. How quickly can Black make him pay for his foolishness?

The correct strategy here is to keep up the pressure and don't give him time to even breathe.

1.Rh8+ Kxh8

3.Rh8+ Kxh8
4.Qh1+ Bh3

Not 2...Qe3+? which leads to nowhere: 3.Kc3 Qd4+ 4.Kd2, Qe3+, Kc3, back and forth, etc.

3. e3 (if 3.Kc3? Qb4#)

3...Qxe3+
4.Kc3 Qd4+

6.Ke1 (or 6.Kc3 Qb4#)
6...Qf2#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

I wanted to say that's it's really lovely here, and I had a pleasant experience coming home from the market. I drove by a guy's house who still has a faded Trump banner outside his house. I have never seen anyone outside when I was going past, but he and his wife and friends were outside on the front porch having a drink. I stopped in a nearby turnaround and went up to the outside of the house, and said "I just want to say I really appreciate your sign and think it's rather courageous of you to keep it up. He invited me into his yard and said "No masks" and we had a nice conversation.

40 It was a weekend filled with red, white, and blue for First Lady Melania Trump, 47, who showed off her patriotic style with the beautiful blue dress she wore on the Fourth of July, where she appeared on the Truman Balcony at the White House.

She showed off a fit-and-flare, sleeveless frock by designer Esteban Cortazar. The dress featured a scoop neck and an asymmetrical hemline, which was polished off with a white border - and she even managed to show off a hint of cleavage in her latest look. Dress retails for $1,477.

Advanced Problem..It says "Looking at the board, this is one of those times when going after the rook on a8..." There is no rook on a8. Black can mate using only the Queen. No need to. bring in any other piece as far as I can see.

If the Christian folks here could please pray that the service would glorify God and lift up Jesus, that we have some new people and that they feel touched by God to either come back or give their life to the Lord and both, I would be most grateful. 189 I wanted to share some other bit of good news. I was in the market and a man wearing a mask (because the market requires it) also had a cross on. It was wooden and had some writing on it and a said "I'm a Christian, sir. Can you tell me what your cross says?. He said it's my name. Turns out here's a retired-not really-pastor who is preaching online somewhere tomorrow and we had done ecumenical services together when I was serving in a town nearbye where his church was. I hadn't seen him for 10 years. It was so nice to talk to he and his wife. He really was an "Orthodox" Presbyterian and conservative and a fine preacher. I think he was going to turn in his orders when the PCUSA performed marriage services for gays. I don't know if he did. Anyway, I was glad to see him and glad he still preaching. Since he lives about 20 miles away and he and his wife came up to the area to have a lunch and go to the market because she likes it, I call running into him a "God incident" not a coincidence.

The starter solenoid will make a rapid chattering, best likened to the sound of the air impact wrench used to put wheels on at the tire shop. This can be caused by a weak battery, or by a faulty connection between the battery cables and their terminals. Oftentimes, a corroded battery terminal post is the culprit, the usual most common cause after a dead battery. Batteries sometimes fail in such a way that a full 2 volts is available to run low-current loads like lights, but go open-circuit when called upon to deliver 100+ amps for the starter.

Remove cables from battery, clean posts and cable ends, reconnect, and try again.

The solenoid chatters because the battery cannot push enough current to the starter to make the engine turn. Usually, this means a weak battery, or a bad connection, as mentioned above. Rarely, it means a worn out, dragging starter, or a seized or hydro-locked engine.

276 No, they didn't deform themselves wearing corsets. No, they didn't have ribs cut out. People that work with historical clothes have been trying to set the record straight for years. It's an illusion. Make the hips wider (you know they used padding on the hips, right?). Then make the shoulders look wider. Magically, the waist looks much smaller.

There is a website called foundationsrevealed.com with a lot of info on this. Women in the lower classes had corsets designed and marketed to them. They wore them because it supported their back when doing physical work. Made right, they are comfortable and you do not have any problems breathing. You might start with this video comparing modern medical corsets with Victorian corsets.

280 Extremely pleased to report the rotator cuff operation on my wife has been a resounding success thus far. The pain level (according to her) has been quite tolerable, although she's a stoic and fairly likely not to admit the degree.

Only downside is that abomination they call a sling. She mentioned that they had a bunch of fun strapping her into it and I see why. Just a screwed up mess.

That is excellent news. I reposted this to the current thread, so you would not be willowed.

283 Doesn't 1. Qh6 immediately win in problem two?

1...gxh6 2. Rg1+ Kh7 3. Rxh6

284 #1 Am I missing something, or did I find a mate in two?

1... Qxg3+
2. Kh1 Rxh2#

286 Hey, Oregonmuse, for the intermediate problem, 1.Ng5 is ALSO a mate-in-6. The interesting thing is that it is not a checking move, and so leaves black open to do anything! But black has to desperately throw away his knight and bishop to avoid an immediate mate. The very longest he can hold out is 5 moves, and he gets mated on the 6th move with white rooks on h7 and h8.

287 Regarding my post #286, I do see a way black can last 8 moves before getting mated, so your solution is the clear winner. Here is a mate-in-7 with my opening move:
1.Ng5 Nd2+ 2.Kc1 pxp+ 3.KxN Nc4+ 4.NxN Bh3 5.R1xB pg6 6.Rh8+ Kg7 7.R1h7++
And here is the one way I found for black to hold out for 8 moves:
1.Ng5 Nd2+ 2.Kc1 Nb3+ 3.pxN pxp+ 4.Kd2 Nc4+ 5.pxN Bh3 6.R1xB pg6 7.Rh8+ Kg7 8.R1h7++
I've tried to post this many times and it keeps getting rejected. If you see this, then my latest tweak to get past your sp*m filter worked.
