White House Reporters: Biden Press Team Demanded Their Questions In Advance

Thank goodness we got rid of that authoritarian.

If you're a reporter with a tough question for the White House press secretary, Joe Biden's staff wouldn’t mind knowing about it in advance.
According to three sources with knowledge of the matter, as well as written communications reviewed by The Daily Beast, the new president's communications staff have already on occasion probed reporters to see what questions they plan on asking new White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki when called upon during briefings.
The requests prompted concerns among the White House press corps, whose members, like many reporters, are sensitive to the perception that they are coordinating with political communications staffers.

Yeah, too late.

One reporter raised the issue during an informal White House Correspondents Association Zoom call last Friday. According to multiple sources, leaders at the meeting advised print reporters to push back against requests by the White House press team to learn of questions in advance, or simply to not respond to the Biden team's inquiries.
"While it's a relief to see briefings return, particularly with a commitment to factual information, the press can't really do its job in the briefing room if the White House is picking and choosing the questions they want," one White House correspondent said. "That's not really a free press at all."

Biden's press team did not deny that staffers had solicited questions from reporters. But the White House contended that it has tried to foster a better relationship with the press corps than the previous administration, and has tried to reach out to reporters directly in order to avoid appearing to dodge questions during briefings.

Allow me to translate the quoted statement into English:

Simply completely different creatures. Interestingly, the best of the younger reporters (mostly not Americans or Europeans, but some Americans who worked in the bureau headed by one of them) clearly regarded these guys as their role models.

Yeah yeah yeah, systemic bias and distortion going back decades, but there was also actual reporting, and even actual editorial sanity (selection and treatment of topics). Even as recently as Clinton - while he wasn't hounded nearly as badly as a GOPer would have been, he was hammered pretty good during the scandal. Bill Clinton's ridiculous misbehavior (which included obviously criminal and impeachable conduct, BTW), had it occurred now, or under Bambi - we'd hardly even know about it. That's how bad the decline has been.

Again, for good perspective on the systemic rot - but also the fact that it hasn't always been this bad - see Big Story by Don Braestrup, about the distortion of the Tet '68 story (he was a wire-service bureau chief in Saigon).

Yeah, there was often no relationship between the import of what they filed from the field, and what the world saw on the wires. And I recall how badly the BBC would grovel (once London itself even called to prostrate itself) over outright - and material - errors of fact. Didn't make them start reporting sanely overall, however. And that reminds me, there were two BBC correspondents who took me aside shortly after arriving at the show, and furtively haltingly said "WTF with the western press here?". THAT is how bad it gets.

319 313: I was at the range yesterday, some distance south of me. I was talking to an RSO about how business was out there as it is a HUGE range but the people there were few and far between. As he said, lots of people have new guns but few people have the ammo with which to try them out.

In his case, he reported that in November the range was packed, especially on the rifle side, for people praciticing for deer hunting season. But as soon as that was done and the hunters left to pursue their game, the business dried up.

One of the things that came up at the range yesterday is the proposal to register magazines. Yeah, good luck with that. As many guns as their are at the bottoms of rivers and lakes throughout the country, there are even more magazines, as there are many multiples of them per firearm.
