Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | To Protest Columbus' Discovery of America, Antifa Topples Statues of Noted White Supremacists Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham LincolnThey literally laughed at him and claimed that observation was itself racist. And here we are. Now the Great Emancipator is insufficiently woke to have a public statue.President Trump called on federal law enforcement to target the "Radical Left" and Antifa after rioters in Portland on Sunday evening toppled statues of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt during "day of rage" protests over the Christopher Columbus holiday. "The FBI and Law Enforcement must focus their energy on ANTIFA and the Radical Left, those who have spent the summer trying to burn down poorly run Democrat Cities throughout the USA!," the president wrote in a string of tweets Monday after the "indigenous peoples day of rage," organized by a faction of Antifa. "Taking advantage of fools. Law & Order! Portland, call in the Feds!," Trump said in another posting. If Biden has a plan to stop the riots -- um, why doesn't he share it? Looks like "Just an Idea" continues organizing violent, criminal actions. Last week -- Thursday I think -- there was a debate between Antifa-friendly mayor Ted Wheeler and Actual Antifa Member Sarah Iannarone. This video clip is cued up for the question and her evasive response. She simply will not answer whether or not she's actually antifa-- but the strong suggestion she offers is that she is. And the media moderator's attempt to get her to actually answer the question, and her further evasive responses. And then a third attempt to get her to say if she'll ever arrest antifa, ending with Iannarone declaring that her method of controlling the riots will only consist of arresting more and more cops. She says she "can't control" what her fellow antifa members do at their nightly riots, so there is no law enforcement solution to the riots. But for some reason, she "can control" what cops do, and will arrest them to achieve "accountability." She does not explain why arrests and criminal punishments will achieve "accountability" with regard to police behavior, but will not have a similar salutary effect as regards antifa misbehavior. Note that the media moderator here does keep pressing the admitted antifa candidate -- but then, the media is always very tough on Democrats' opponents. Recall that a poll from last week showed Wheeler down 11 points to the antifa candidate. Proving the maxim that if you give the voters a choice between an actual socialist and a watered-down mealy-mouthed soft-socialist, why, they'll just go and pick the person who's at least upfront about her beliefs. And the government responded by arresting them (for real), rolling up their organizations, and destroying them? Somehow though we can't do anything about an explicit and upfront terrorist group? That formerly embraces violence? Posted by: 18-1 at October 13, 2020 02:09 PM (qlFIA) 13

Why TF do people care about the SCOTUS hearing? She's going to be confirmed, doesn't matter what's said or done there. Including whatever wondrous substantive merit the nominee is alleged to possess - who cares?
This is about power and outcomes, period. She'll be confirmed. Then, who knows. The judicial system is a sort of politburo with near-absolute power over anything it chooses to meddle in. The "constitution" or the most basic principles of our system at its best (equal protection under law) are completely irrelevant. To borrow a formulation from another ever-green ongoing taffy yank, wake me when the executive or legislative branches begin to restore rule of law, by greatly reducing judicial power. Personnel changes in a collapsed system are a dubious strategery for success in the longer term. Posted by: rhomboid at October 13, 2020 02:20 PM (OTzUX) 106

'Can anybody tell me what the hell the Cook Report is and why I should care.' The Cook Report is an old fixture political newsletter for political groupies that rates the competitiveness of elections in the U.S. Senate and House races, governors races, as well as the Presidency. It is expensive to have a full time subscription because they report on elections as their primary job. Big donors, media, political nerds, and campaign consultants, use this to open checkbooks, provide commentary based on the changes in the races reported by Cook, and gather media coverage for candidates. In reality, probably a bit dated and they rely on their "expertise" to call races based on magic formulas not fully revealed including polling, fundraising, the normal vote in the state or district (the expected R/D vote based on history), demographics, etc. Posted by: whig at October 13, 2020 02:35 PM (OLiBJ) 229

To destroy the American Nation, and its power, you must first destroy what made it great in the first place.
Its culture. And its culture is based on its history. So you must destroy the History, that formed the culture. You must punish anyone who is actually productive, or successful. And you must only reward those who follow your new paradigm and worldview. But for that worldview to survive, you must ensure that the Culture of the past will never be revived, so you MUST destroy all the history, of said culture, being successful. It's a similar story in Missouri, where Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill lost her bid for re-election. She opposed Kavanaugh, and 68% of Missouri voters said her vote was a factor in their decision. She lost those voters 46%-53%. And in Indiana, where Sen. Joe Donnelly lost to Mike Braun, the Kavanaugh vote was a factor for 69% of voters and Donnelly lost them." Somehow the FBI and state authorities had absolutely no problem getting into the conspiracy to kidnap the governor of Michigan. but are totally clueless about getting into a rioting mob organization that seems to have no trouble letting anyone participate who is dressed in black, says the right things, and carries a sign.
Yes, one of the Michigan gang went to the cops and agreed to wear a wire and that gave the cops a lead. But undercover cops have done great work in the past getting into drug gangs and organized crime by playing the part required. For some strange reason getting into left-wing mobs to identify who is running things has eluded them. Posted by: George V at October 13, 2020 02:41 PM (U2Tva) 281

They look to the north, not the south. Posted by: Captain Obvious, Task Group Cluebat at October 13, 2020 02:31 PM (OYAWg) Here we go, analogy time: Imagine there are three girls in 7th grade, all trying to be the "cool" kid, and there's one girl who is universally acknowledged to be the cool one, even if half the class hates her guts, while the other half thinks everything she says and does is cool. So one of the girls is a bit more outgoing, and she goes on and on about how she hates the cool girl, and she does things that are similar to the cool girl, but not the same. The less outgoing of the other girls, she kinda looks up to the hater girl, and so she does the same type of thing. Similar to the cool girl, but not the same, and this less outgoing girl even goes freakier in her iconoclastic sameness. Meanwhile the acknowledged cool girl cares, not at all what the other two are up to. Thus, even while loudly proclaiming their hate for the cool girl, and acting like they're different from and better than the cool girl, the cool girl continues to dominate their personas in ways they are incapable of seeing for themselves. Every hour they'd empty out the men's room and take the women on a tour. The urinal there was a long trough that went along one wall and then turned the corner and went down the other wall. 196 Thank you, ACB!! She just said that the SC doesn't just pick laws to overturn. They have to wait for a case to be appealed, so there is no guarantee that an abortion case will be heard. Basic, but so many refuse to acknowledge this point.
_________________ There is massive ignorance in this country about how our system works (thanks teachers!). Even if a case challenging Roe v. Wade were to come before the SCOTUS, and even if the SCOTUS were to overturn Roe, that would not be the end of abortion. Yet we continually hear hysterical claims that it would from the know-nothings on the left. Roe created a federal "constitutional right" to abortion, on very dubious legal grounds. If that right were to go away tomorrow, the states would be free to pass their own abortion laws. Most states, even the conservative ones, would still allow abortion in some circumstances, and leftist states (like CA, NY, IL, WA, OR, HI, etc.) would have no restrictions on abortion, and would probably even try to legalize post-birth abortions. So even if 9 justices voted tomorrow to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion would not suddenly be outlawed in the U.S. It would just mean that the federal "constitutional right" to abortion (which is a judge-created right) would no longer exist. The states would still be free to create state constitutional rights to abortion, if they so chose (and some undoubtedly would), or to pass state laws that gave women liberal abortion rights up to (or even past) the moment of birth. I'm somewhat optimistic that this won't happen. In no small part because Austin is very different demographically. Like most places obsessed with "diversity," Austin is very, very white. Whenever ACB says rules and procedures control much of what SCOTUS and the other Federal courts can or cannot do, remember that those rules and procedures can be changed by law, and in some cases by the courts themselves.
If the Democrats control the White House and both Houses of Congress (with the Senate filibuster killed), it means not just the possibility of court-packing, but the possibility of changes to Federal rules of criminal procedure, to rules and laws for admissibility of evidence, and to who knows how many other things. And in the situation that Sasse and ACB discussed, a packed-SCOTUS could change its rules to let anyone it chooses ask for ruling on a point of law or Constitutionality without having a real case. Scary stuff. Posted by: Gref at October 13, 2020 02:55 PM (AMIL/) 380

The road back to reality for Portland will be unpleasant. Eventually, an incident will cause a reaction from the public, but that could be a decade away and by then Portland will be envious of today's Detroit. Posted by: WonderPony at October 13, 2020 02:56 PM (yIOUT) 393

Austin won't go the all way of Portland because Austin is the capital of a mostly conservative state. All the Texas lawmakers have to spend time in Austin, maybe not 100% of the time, but plenty enough time to pass some laws to limit city/county excesses. Oregon lawmakers get to live in Salem instead of Portland, so the nuttiness doesn't hit home quite as fully.

Not to be an Eeyore, but it doesn't need to spread beyond the blue cities. Look at California, Oregon, and Washington. Seattle, Portland, SF, LA (and increasingly, SD) are leftist. The rest of each those states is conservative.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at October 13, 2020 02:52 PM (YqDXo) Too much of California is Forest (State or National), Mountain, or Desert. Makes the rural population relatively low. In California, only 47.9% of the State is privately owned; 52.1% is owned by either the State or Federal Government. In Texas, 95.8% of the State is privately owned, with the Feds owning 2% (mostly in Big Bend Park) and the State owning 2% (various state parks) It makes the rural/big city split much more even. There is no such thing. Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at October 13, 2020 03:01 PM (B+qrE) I would disagree. Sure it's not a formal thing but a Super Precedent would be one where there isn't even any opposition to it anymore. Like Brown. Unlimited abortion has never been in that category. I am sure that the left expected a sullen acceptance after a few decades, like Brown, but it remains just as much a hot issue now, 47 years after Roe, as before. Which is why it took a Civil War, a million deaths, half the country burnt to the ground, 3 Constitutional Amendments, and a complete restructuring of the American Government to overturn it. Durham is busy tying 2,000 people together with geometric precision into a vast conspiracy against Trump, Mom, and apple pie. Unless he is required to add another facet to the every complex case, he will be done in 30 years. We have that much faith in the man to saddle him with this great burden.

The geography of Texas is different. We aren't so confined to cities here. Rural counties have sizable populations. And even in cities, the surrounding towns remain conservative. Georgetown vs Austin or Galveston vs Houston. The cities aren't such a large percentage population of the state. ____ The biggest cities in Texas (I stopped counting at Plano, #70 on the list of city population in the nation) have a combined population of roughly nine million. Total population of the state is roughly twenty-nine million. Plenty of rural space here. Posted by: sharksauce at October 13, 2020 03:18 PM (DFZnL) 566

Austin is like Madison South. In both cases, you have both the state capital (large pop of government bureaucrats) and the flagship state university (large pop of radical profs and students). The two together make for an especially toxic combo.

--------- Better said than my reply, but this is what I was getting at. Texas is all private property. We are spread out. California is half federal land which is uninhabited. They are more concentrated in cities. Posted by: Drc at October 13, 2020 03:20 PM (vbaSG) 574

Not trying to be contrary here, and I certainly hope you guys are right. But I think you're whistling past the graveyard a bit. Forty years ago, California was more conservative than Texas is today.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara Oh yeah. Texas used to vote ALL DEMOCRAT all the time. And the myth of Dallas being hostile to JFK, and he was afraid to go there. Lyndon was just one of many crooked Democrat politicians to come out of Texas. John Connolly was a Democrat most of his life, and then when he saw the tide turning, became a Republican. Having said all that, I don't know exactly what is conservative, liberal, nationalist or sectionalist any more. I do know that almost historically, the Democrats have been for "section". The Founders and the Federalist papers were pretty hard on that idea. Posted by: Bozo Conservative....lost in America at October 13, 2020 03:23 PM (vcOmj) 579

Soo... she's going to arrest the cops.
Doesn't she, umm, see the conceptual there? Which cops will remain to arrest the cops after you defund the cops? The idiot voters of Portland and Seattle better have alligator insurance. The gator is surely coming to them soon. And the surrounding counties should probably quarantine the asylums, and limit exits. Screw 'em. They wanted it.
