By comparison, Spain is at 292.2 and France reports 172.1. That's a rather startling difference. ... This should leave us to wonder if that wasn’t the ideal solution from the beginning. If we had locked down the nursing homes and provided relief to everyone over the age of 55 so they could stay home, along with anyone with a doctor's note saying they had underlying respiratory or immune system issues, could we have just left the rest of the economy running?

No correlation. There is a modest, though probably not statistically relevant, *negative* correlation. Same with masks. Statistically neutral.
In other words, even without the external example, we know from our *own* experience across the states that lockdowns and mask mandates have no positive effects, with potential negative effects (though that one is shaky). It doesn't work, and it doesn't work very clearly.
But it was never about efficacy or honesty, so it doesn't matter.

Oh, for sure. Perhaps I was unclear. I meant evidence for negative effects with regard to the 'Rona itself is shaky. The *other* negative effects are writ large. Unemployment. Isolation. Substance abuse. Suicide. Debt. Economic activity. But those aren't specifically 'Rona spread.
There is no doubt that the cure is worse than the disease. Even if the cure had *worked* - something for which there is no evidence - it would be questionable.

That's one of the things I believe that has helped the RLM guys. They stay out of politics. You can tell they are left of center, but they stick to the movies. That's one of the things I believe that has helped the RLM guys. They stay out of politics. You can tell they are left of center, but they stick to the movies. It is because we never really know. They count influenza deaths by taking the normal amount of deaths, and subtracting that from total deaths. Then they filter out some known causes. After that you have your flu season influenza deaths.

Hell the real world is full of variables and direct comparisons is not possible, IOW this is not a science clean lab where you can control the variables.
The world is a global economy. The two largest economies are the US and China.
Then there is airline travel in the jet age and traffic patterns.
There was also different mutations of COVID which unfortunately the CDC was trying to make their tests capable of differentiating.
IOW Sweden does not have 1/10 of the international airports or international Chinese travel that the US does. Or Chinese students coming to their science and business colleges, English is the dominant language in air traffic, business and science and the Chinese know this. They are not going to Sweden.
And New York and California probably have more immigrants from China that still travel back to see family during the holidays when this pandemic hit than the whole entire population of Sweden.

They were the only ones that behaved like adults.
As rhomboid (and some others) were pointing out at the beginning, once an easily transmitted disease 'gets out' (around a percent of the population effected), it's too late to stop it getting to as many people as it needs to to be stopped by herd immunity. It's only a question of how long you take to get to that point. Sweden more or less let it go and got their infections up front so they're basically done with the disruption, while the rest of the world is paying the price for foolishly dragging it out.
People don't even seem to remember the theory for dragging it out. 15 days to slow the spread wasn't about preventing when people got sick, it was about spacing them out so anyone who needed a hospital bed could get one (and specifically those who need respirators-which turned out to be the wrong treatment for many of them, and in any case was only saving about 20% of those who went on them). Now people want to pretend if they hide long enough they'll *never* get it.
Which is just not how this works.

Hell the real world is full of variables and direct comparisons is not possible, IOW this is not a science clean lab where you can control the variables.
The world is a global economy. The two largest economies are the US and China.
Then there is airline travel in the jet age and traffic patterns.
There was also different mutations of COVID which unfortunately the CDC was trying to make their tests capable of differentiating.
IOW Sweden does not have 1/10 of the international airports or international Chinese travel that the US does. Or Chinese students coming to their science and business colleges, English is the dominant language in air traffic, business and science and the Chinese know this. They are not going to Sweden.
And New York and California probably have more immigrants from China that still travel back to see family during the holidays when this pandemic hit than the whole entire population of Sweden.

Beyond that, let most of the population develop the herd immunity, and recovery happens soon ... (except when there is a tyrant to remove from office, then a brand new protocol is needed)
I wonder how many in Sweden developed antibodies by being exposed to C19, and how many had "natural immunity" from previous covids. Some supposition says we may only need 15-20% to get new immunity, since many are already covid resistant. Real Science has to speak from the shadows, or they get fired and censored.

Sweden *did not* promote Herd Immunity like Boris Johnson did for the UK, when it got hit. Sweden *did* suffer a higher death rate than its Scandinavian neighbours - which I notice Ace doesn't mention here. But I'll mention it - 5500, against 10,000,000 total.
The economy suffered, along the lines of Denmark's and Norway's. -4.5% contraction.
To the extent Sweden has Herd Immunity now - despite not asking for it - that's because it has a smarter herd than we have.
Sweden had the advantage, if you will, of a communitarian society which its government could trust to play it safe. It did not, in short, have a population of American Conservatives.
