More Than Half of San Francisco Stores -- 54% -- Are Closed, And Many Are Never Re-Opening

San Francisco has draconian shutdown orders, even though it has a relatively low COVID infection rate.

Doesn't matter. This is an opportunity for leftwing authoritarians to show how "tough" they are.

But they don't show they're tough on crime.

They show off how tough they are on law-abiding, economically-productive citizens.

That'll show them!

More than half of all storefronts in San Francisco are no longer in business due to COVID-19, according to the survey by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.

"The survey showed only 46 percent of storefront businesses in San Francisco that were open at the beginning of the pandemic are still operating," said Jay Cheng, spokesman of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.

I got that from nerd-culture Youtuber Nerdrotic, who himself just fled San Francisco. He and his family were forced to leave -- his wife's previously-hopping hair salon has been forced into shutdown for months and months. He's moving to Texas, after a short stay in San Diego.

He mentioned that when he was trying to rent a Uhaul for his move, there were 4-6 week waits for Uhauls. That's how in-demand they are. That's how many people are fleeing San Francisco, forever. (He got a Uhaul by driving 90 minutes outside of San Fransisco to find one outlet that had one to rent.)

I mention this because New York City is now experiencing huge lines to rent Uhauls.

No one's lining up to move into the city -- just to bug the f*** out.

These people aren't coming back. It took NYC 20 years to climb out of the absolute pit it was in the 1970s.

And it took four years of Democrat rule to destroy it. This time: forever.

As I said, anecdata, but there's a ton of actual data out there about houses going for massive amounts over listing price sight unseen in the Lake Tahoe area.

I think that's a lot of it - when you announce that property crimes are "crimes of poverty", and make it clear that you're not going to prosecute shoplifting, it becomes almost impossible for a low-margin retail business to operate.

Car break-ins are absolutely rampant in San Francisco, particularly in tourist areas, and Chesa's Big Idea to solve this is to provide car owners with discounted window glass replacement services.

I'm not making this up.

Because it's still Summer and it's a hundred fucking degrees outside.

For the moment. It takes time for the hidden inefficiencies and the flaws in the system to become apparent. I imagine that sometime in the spring we'll see a shift back towards offices, although it won't fully recover. Probably a more dispersed model, combined with increased use of telework as a reward for good workers/experienced employees.

I'm not making this up.

Yiiiikes.

I recall seeing video of shoplifters walking into a CVS and just brazenly fillg up their bags (maybe 3 of them?) and walking out. You can empty out a store like that if the bar is $1k or more before you prosecute, and you have a group of friends.

Yes, how could any business sustain that kind of open, large-scale theft when it no doubt happens again and agian.

121 and make it clear that you're not going to prosecute shoplifting, it becomes almost impossible for a low-margin retail business to operate.

I was trying to find a solution for brick and mortars on how to deal with the new dynamic reparations that are in effect in Communist run cities and counties where the approved class of criminals can loot upwards of $800-$1000 per incident before a prosecutor considers action.

Redesign buildings to allow entry only through turnstiles after face recognition software determines that you are not on a watch-list.

Initially anyone can enter, and due to the huge number of cameras within a store, identifying shoplifters is quite easy and storing those images and forwarding the templates to allied businesses will permit others to flat out ban the entry in to those stores.

When the perp whines about it, invite them into a sitting room, replay the video footage of the theft and then give them options.

This is expected to be a cooperative system where the customer agrees to not hide behind hoodies, masks and glasses to frustrate identification systems.

I can't think of a medical reason why someone should dress like a bank robber to honestly pick up some groceries or hardware.

It's got to be 70% in some surrounding cities as well.

For a while there, in April and May, it was more like 95%. The ONLY stores open were supermarkets, banks and hardware stores. Everything else -- shuttered by law.

Then they briefly cancelled the shutdown -- and then Re-imposed it. So in theory, now, only "essential" businesses are supposed to be open. (That is, marijuana shops, sex toy outlets, and abortion clinics. The essentials.) So I'm surprised that 46% are now open.

I practically had to make a frigging appointment to touch one. I had to wait for somebody to take the guitar off the wall, then clean the guitar. I said screw it, because I would also need to plug it into an amp and figured that would be another ordeal. I went into the acoustic room just to try a classical guitar since I haven't played classical in 5 years and wouldn't need the amp. I had to wait for that one to get cleaned, and it was the biggest piece of shit I ever played, and I figured ok screw this, I'm not waiting for them to do a frigging exorcism on another, so I put it down and split. A lot of people waited too long, and got NOTHING for their houses that they left.
This exodus is not some fad. It's the real thing.

And PS
I think the Antifa/BLM stuff is going to be with us for a LONG time. Like the +70 years that the "Palestinians" have been hanging onto the Lost Lands of Palestine, and pestering / terrorizing the Israeli Jews.

175 Initially anyone can enter, and due to the huge number of cameras within a store, identifying shoplifters is quite easy

Or you can do the Costco approach - you have a guard check your receipt against the goods in your cart before you leave the store.

The two problems with this are first: of course you can't do anything if someone just runs out of the store, since you'll be prosecuted if you try to stop them.

Second, California would simply ban receipt-checking if numerous stores started doing that.

This is one way they will begin to control journalism if they deem certain news credible or not.

INJECT was a new digital tool designed to support journalists to discover new associations with which to generate stories with angles more novel and valuable than stories published previously. It integrated creative search algorithms with which to discover information in published news stories and interactive support to form new associations with this information during creative thinking. It was designed to contribute to journalist engagement in professional-level creative work, that is, work that generated income and provided a living. This work included writing stories that were creative, that is, judged to be novel and valuable through the application of the creativity skills of the journalists.

Posted by: Anonymous 7 at August 31, 2020 05:24 PM (UIaHg)

James Altuchar wrote a very good and widely quoted piece on this topic about 2 weeks ago. He went through all the many problems, the reasons people were leaving, and then he concluded that the biggest reason people would not be coming back was Bandwidth.

Financial companies and traders used to need to be close to the action to be a part of it - now, net bandwidth is so high, there's no need. In days past, there was high level entertainment in NYC that was nowhere else; with high bandwidth, it's everywhere. All the things that once made NYC special were now available everywhere, especially from a business POV, and having left, everyone who has left is quickly realizing there's no reason to go back and face the many intolerable problems there.

And there's an even worse multiplier at work - the people leaving are the skilled, the wealthy, the ones who have both the means and the talent to clear out and quickly build new lives. Who's that leave behind? The unskilled, the sick, the unmotivated, the criminal element, the underclass. As the productive element leaves, the group remaining on balance becomes ever more dysfunctional and self destructive.

Look no farther then Baltimore, this process has already happened there.

From Breitbart: Brad Alberts, the CEO of the NHL's Dallas Stars, said that his team is losing a growing number of season ticket holders over the team's vocal support of Black Lives Matter.

But, losing customers does not appear to be a big enough reason for Alberts to change anything.

[...]

Alberts added that the loss was both from individual fans and companies that had previously purchased season tickets. But he hastened to add that they had not lost any advertisers."

Now think about that calculus. CEO is less concerned about loss of fans than he is about loss of advertising. He seems to think that a) advertising money will continue without fans, and that antagonizing fans is the right strategic move because advertising is his real target market.

Seems like a business executive who is a) hired above his business acumen and b) not that much a fan of the sport.

256 Just more confirmation of a two tiered justice system and that ANTIFA has the mob's veto on law enforcement in Portland.

A year ago in Portland, an Antifa person was run over and killed near the Antifa bar after a dispute with a group of people in a car (likely a drug deal gone bad). His two friends fired shots at the car, the car crashed, and the occupants of the car took off on foot.

Portland Antifa told everyone not to cooperate with the police investigation, and Ted Wheeler released a statement saying what a fine, upstanding young man the deceased was.

Despite having the car, and two witnesses who fired at the car, the Portland police have yet to make a single arrest.

That 9% coincides with my analysis a few months ago (which I can't find) where I decided that Trump gains 4 million votes from 2016, minimum. If he takes *5%* of Hillary voters, that's 3 million votes right there.

Then say he loses a million of his own (call it people who hated Hillary), and gains 2 million from new voters and people who voted "other" in 2016. That's 4 million, total, which would make for a popular vote total of nearly 67 million.

284 The AB era was destined to happen but we just ramped it up quicker.

That is rather mixed.

Yahoo, a while back, tried the remote worker routine, and discovered that their lazy, self-indulgent, staff would screw off if not supervised. They reversed that policy soon after discovering the drop in productivity.

A company I did work with was given a contract to come up with software to detect if their off-shore employees were actually working - because there was strong suspicion that they too screwed off too much and couldn't be trusted to work without direct supervision.

Then the Wuhan Death Miasma took all of the options of working remote and made it the only available course. The difference now is that instead of these worthless Millennials being the test subjects, they now include the more industrious Gen-X and the last of the Boomers in this Grand Experiment.

Many Millennials are actually maturing now and are growing out of their slacker ways. The younger ones with their laziness, entitlement and disdain for their elders, are unemployable and are no longer a factor.

Not sure what we are going to do with this lost generation. Maybe they will die for the BLM cause.

He said, "I'm never leaving NYC. Ever."

Funny guy, but the cheap ad hominem shots he made against Altucher weren't funny, and uncalled for. Altucher is no conservative, and he made a reasoned argument for this time being different for NYC. He's got skin in the game as well, so his decamping for FL doesn't affect his tangible financial interest in the city. I'd argue that he's got more financial skin in the game that Seinfeld does, so it's even more of a cheap shot.

292 Spoke with a real estate agent about all this. He thought a big portion of the hot housing market was actually people wanting to get a house now in case Biden wins and the rates start going back up.

Agreed there was some flight from cities but I don't think that's currently baked in.

In other words, expect the market to get even hotter as they flee.

Good time to sell but also hard to find available houses. Not a lot of houses on spec right now.

Any rational plan out is now impossible, because the population on balance is getting worse and worse, and worse as the productive ones leave. The only way out is what played out in Detroit - 30 years of pure dysfunction and collapse, finally bankruptcy and the appointment of of Special Master along with the abolition of all powers for the Mayor and Town Council. And then after 2 or 3 years of that, some control can start to be handed back to local officials on a limited basis, and some recovery may begin to happen slowly.

In other words, it might be a good place to invest in the 2050's. Not before.

and maybe you should wait until 2100.

370 Yeah, I remember that. Incompetence, or just plain corruption?

People who support Antifa are a significant voting block in Portland - that's how you get the Soros DA, and that's how you may get the "Antifa mayor" elected in November.

70% of the population of the Portland area lives in the suburbs. If only 15% of the Portland metro population are Antifa lunatics, but they all live in the city, that's half the voters in Portland.

I finally got to watch it - wow - Joe Biden will not be serving as President of the local Senior Citizen Action Committee much less Pres. of the US of America - the man is way, way gone. The speech was bad and, really, quite grotesque in its inference that Trump is flaming death and destruction when its the left - but Joe didn't write any of that - its his goofy dumbass team that writes stuff not ready for political prime time. But Punchy Joe slurred and stumbled his way through, sometimes simply being incoherent - it was an awful performance on a speech that should never had been made in some venue for no purpose at all - no one came and the press asked no questions - Biden is over.

491 The entire idea of a legal system with laws, judges, and lawyers (unfortunately) was invented by the Romans.
No one would build shops or stores in Rome because the local political thug would just steal it once it was successful. To get wealthy land owners to invest in such business they had to have a set of rules, fairly enforced, before they would risk it. The Romans invented the legal system out of necessity.

The democrats are turning the clock back in their cities to pre-Roman days. No one will build or invest in Democrat/Antifa/Media (triple repeat) cities. Democrats are trying to eliminate eliminating 2000 years of progress. The collapse of Rome led to the Dark Ages.

I see no reason why NYC, Chicago, LA, Portland, Seattle, .... should get any electrical power from fossil fuels. Turn it off. Make them Green. Make them look like N.Korea at night. The new Dark Ages.

497 I'm not going to say NYC is screwed forever, but it's going to take some time. They've got Wilhelm for another 2 (3?) years. Then it's up to those voting to make sure they don't fill his spot with one of the many commies on the city council. If somehow a Republican or at least a capitalist like Bloomberg gets in, they can bring NYC back by reintroducing strong policing and creating tax incentives for companies to return.

I also think a lot will do with how quickly the housing market there collapses. The same liberals causung the collapse are tied to big money, which will probably scoop up properties when they fall a certain percentage, they'll want to then quickly turn things around so they can make billions.

NYC will return, but the unknown is how long it'll take, based on the utter stupidity of those living on its fringes.

500 I feel badly for Ace and the few normal people left in NYC.

I first visited in 1999. Have a photo with my husband and sons from Statue of Liberty with Twin Towers in back ground. So glad I have that photo.

We went several times afterwards, husband's business, son and his gf's college graduation gift, etc. We always stayed in the Upper West Side. The Lucerne as a matter of fact...now one of the hotels hosting drug addicts, felons and criminals. Heaven knows, if/when they are evicted how much damage to each room and hall will be done.

I felt safe there. I got to know the neighborhood, the great Italian restaurant across the street. At the time, Filene's basement down the block, etc. The Met Art Museum, etc. Such a shame for those who lived there. We always went to the theater as well. Of course voting for Di Blabbio was not smart, etc.

I hope Ace can find a new place to live.

I never liked San Francrapo, myself. Visited once when my brother in law and beetchy wife lived there as a newlywed. Thinking food would be similar to NOLA, I was disappointed in that. Liked the redwoods. That is about it.

Sad to read that NYC may never be the same.
