Hollywood, Just Full of Ideas, to Remake Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Oh it's different, though: It's race-swapped, now with Will Smith and Kevin Hart.

I bet you any amount of money that the previous plan was to gender-swap it with Sandra Bullock, say, and Melissa McCarthy.

But now that the Gender Swap Woke Remake is a proven loser, they're on to Woke Plan B.

Let me say this to Hollywood: Every time I think you couldn't be more creatively-bankrupt, slavishly imitative IP hijakers, you do something like this, and totally redeem yourselves!

I assume that Will Smith will be taking the Steve Martin role.

He's all wrong for it. I wouldn't have thought Steve Martin could pull that role off -- a dickish, smug, wealthy elitist who plays the straight man in most of the movie -- but he did.

So Steve Martin did manage that, unexpectedly.

Anyone want to bet that Will Smith also nails the role?

Does anyone think he won't do the typical Will Smith glib charm and swagger stuff?

Which is bad for the movie, because the "Neil" character is not supposed to be likable. And he's not supposed to be cool and chill -- having a stick up his ass is an important character trait that drives the plot.

His character arc is to go from being an incivil tight-ass to a nice guy.

I don't have anything against this movie. I'm not against remakes on principle. I'm not precious about art and I think very few things are so holy that they shouldn't be remade.

If someone wants to try to make some money, have at it.

But... this is a really bad movie to try to remake. It was lightning in a bottle.

This will bomb. #Woke remakes are dead. No, just because you race-swap doesn't necessarily make the remake "woke," but, apart from superhero movies, this is all Hollywood does anymore, remaking a movie from the 80s or 90s with a gender or race swapped cast.

People have seen a lot of these swapped remakes and they're almost all terrible. Even if this one is good, people will be disinclined to see it.

They've learned almost all of these movies are Hot Stinky Sweating Corporate Garbage.

I don't know if this will lose money. Kevin Hart makes money on almost all of his movies, and Will Smith, while a faded star, still has some draw.

But: I think an original movie would make more money with these two. If you pit these two in any other project -- one even without any pre-existing IP value, like something you, I don't know, just made up -- the film would make more money.

I think the fact that this is yet another braindead gender-and-race-swapped cash-grab remake will hurt the project at the box office.

No, not Dark Fate levels of lost money... but people want our alleged "Creative Class" to try being creative for once in their miserable, useless lives.

9 Up until Gemini Man (even after After Earth) I thought Will Smith was pretty much the only star left who could open, but I think that time is past.

That may be The Rock now.

The number of actors who become legit stars who can actually open movies is vanishingly small. I don't even think Tom Cruise counts. He just chooses his projects well.

18 You remake bad movies with great concepts executed poorly.

Colossus: The Forbin Project could be remade.

But these sorts of movies aren't well known, which is the executive reason to remake a movie. They need guarantees that their money will be returned, and the "things you know" factor is important to that thinking. Whether it actually works is another thing altogether (lookin' at you Baywatch).

30 "Lightning in a bottle" is a good way to describe it, that's a movie that could have been completely forgettable had it been miscast. It's not exactly a sure fire formula of a movie.

I tried to watch the reboot "Overboard" where the genders were swapped. It was the female that was the "blue collar" character , I couldn't get through like 15 minutes of it before turning it off. I recently watched the original with my kids, they loved it.

54 Well, Will Smith tends to make even bad projects work but... This sounds terrible. And a really stupid idea.

Generally remakes are done to get the world audience to see big films that were hits but only in the USA. But this is a dirty little secret that people don't like to talk about: black men aren't well received in a lot of places around the world so movies starring them tend not to be big international hits. Its not always the case, Black Panther did pretty well. But generally yeah.

So don't expect China to pour into theaters to watch this bad boy.

I mean Will Smith and Kevin Hart are both fun to watch but... this is a mistake. You cannot replace John Candy and Steve Martin, with anyone.

========

It was a good idea for something to try.

A smaller, cheaper story in an established universe. Then it got in the hands of a guy who didn't understand how to make a horror movie, which delayed the opening because it wasn't good, and then Disney bought Fox and tried to do something with it.

And then they finally just released it and everyone said, "Oh, that's why it took so long to release. It kinda sucks."

69 Jumanji is, I think, a good take on how to "remake" a movie.

They used the title/universe, but the newer movies stand on their own and are NOT remakes - and the actors were well cast:

Dwayne Johnson - likeable, arrogant everyhero
Karen Gillian - Hottie who isn't a priss
Kevin Hart - Put upon everyman
Jack Black - arrogant not really likeable f*ckup (ok, there are a hundred actors that could have played his part)

Will Smith could NEVER do that role! Another key to Neill is that he mouths off and acts like a big shot, but when he starts really mouthing off to the cabby he gets his ASS kicked. (when John Candy says "I've never seen a guy picked up by his testicles before!!!")

Will could never, ever allow himself to play the part of some chump who gets his butt kicked because of his big stupid mouth.

========

Comics do these small stories in established universes all the time, but movie studios think that every comic book movie needs to be a giant blockbuster action epic.

You have these universes that could be really rich if you explored them in different ways, but the studios don't want to dilute the brand with smaller things.

The Fantastic Beasts movies are probably the worst of this situation.

Posted by: Wicklow at September 03, 2020 05:10 PM (uH65w)

149 Sorry, but the original is a classic.

Steve Martin as the smug, asshole that only cares about himself was portrayed perfectly by Martin. Martin knew that he was not the sympathetic character, Candy was the sympathetic character, so Martin portrayed his character as a smug asshole.

Candy's role cannot be duplicated. For a comedic genius like him, he knew that his character was sympathetic, but he was also the one that didn't mind sharing his room or ride with a complete stranger. And as they went along, everyone that they met liked Candy's character but not Martin's. It was only at the end when we learned the heartbreaking truth about Candy's character and how HE was the one trying to get Martin's character home for the holidays.

I can't see Smith wanting to have a character like Martin's where he is kind of the heel in the movie.

194 What bothers me about remakes is that I suspect they are going to use all the same jokes, all the same cuts and scenes. But they will throw in (unnecessary) special effects and probably ruin a couple scenes with woke BS, or topical references, or some kind of action sequence.

It's like they are torn between "This was really great, but we can steal it and make money by copying it exactly," and "This was perfect, let's improve it."

197 Pedowood is dead, dead, dead. Nothing is new, nothing is original. There are plenty of action fiction novels that could be adapted to the screen, but won't because of the pro-America, pro-masculine toxicity, pro-gun, pro-God, and pro-positive messages.
Unfortunately, as Pedowood dies, many good people, the people who actually make the movies go (think grips, carpenters, electricians, set designers, the ones who make it work), will be looking for work.

WWW was my favorite show growing up as well. It was incredible, even when it (like a lot of shows) tried to emulate Batman's camp.

Smith was entirely wrong for the part - or he made himself wrong for the part. There was nothing I saw that was remotely an homage to the original. And seeing where Hollyweird has gone since, I understand why. They felt the old show was an embarrassment and played it that way.

Yep. And most of the editors and workers at publishing houses are the worst kind of "I need some muscle here" crayola haired man haters.

I'm not saying this out of bitterness as an indy author, its indisputably true. Most of the very high power publisher jobs are still old men, but that is changing, too.

It's like they are torn between "This was really great, but we can steal it and make money by copying it exactly," and "This was perfect, let's improve it."

347 The original ending to "I am Legend" was supposed to be Will Smith's character realizing he's a monster of legend in the new creatures' mythology.

It was a great spin on the hero/anti-hero model.

But Will Smith wanted to be straight hero and ditched that ending for "Save the world" in all it's unoriginality.

So, yeah, I have doubts Will can play unlikeable.

I think that was the studio/producers' decision, not Will's. Presumably Will had seen "The Last Man on Earth" and/or "The Omega Man" before signing on. The dog scene was suitably dramatic to carry the movie to the original ending.

But, in any case, Will is no Charlton Heston or Vincent Price.

369 The original wasn't that great of a movie, from what I recall of it. John Candy was what made it work, and he and Steve Martin had pretty good on-screen chemistry together. But yeah, it's hard to imagine Will Smith pulling off the Steve Martin role; it's more nuanced than he is capable of. And Hart is no John Candy either. Viewers felt empathy for Candy because he was this big fat schlub of a guy who'd lost the only thing that really mattered to him, his wife, and he was trying to scrape by on his shitty job and his memories of her. Not convinced Hart can evoke the same kind of dignified grief and angst that Candy did. Besides, Hart looks like the kind of guy who'd have no trouble finding another woman to love if his wife kicked off. John Candy's character, not so much.

This is easier than you may think - I've seen someone do some bits of it, it actually could be a very good movie if you kept most of the visuals and just tossed out every line every character says in every scene, and splice in an entirely new script.

I always saw Duncan as more of an assassin type rather than a big warrior, but they went with big warrior. It might be protective because he has star power which can come in handy if they get to the ghola stuff.

Well, Will Smith tends to make even bad projects work but...

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 03, 2020 05:03 PM

I dunno. I'm probably biased, but I would guess that it all depends on the black men in the lead role.

Denzel Washington or Morgan Freeman or Will Smith (at the height of his popularity)... I think they all draw an audience anywhere.

Or even think of the Rush Hour movies with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Sure, Chris Tucker wasn't the draw, but I don't think anyone was turned off to the movie, because he was a black man.

I think black-themed movies are probably more the problem. Smith, Denzel and Freeman have been in plenty of lead roles where the movie was not focused on black issues. They just happened to be a character in a movie. Think of Freeman in Shawshank or Freeman in Bruce Almighty or Freeman in... pretty much any movie he's been in. His blackness is never a focal point. He's simply a black actor playing a role in a movie.

I would assume the movies that get rejected are the "black movies", not because of the black actors, but just the typical black culture stuff is not interesting to most anyone outside the black community.

Finn is the best new character in the Star Wars saga, and if he'd been the focus it could have been amazing. What made him turn against the conditioning? Why did he stop being a Storm Trooper? What was his background? What was being a Storm Trooper like?

Instead they sort of forgot about him, and made him the butt end of jokes for the rest of the films. He even had a chance to be a hero in the end of the second film and... they took that away with him and gave him a jarring, nonsensical romance storyline that went nowhere.

What a waste, I don't blame the guy for being pissed.

Miller's Crossing is very good. Also a remake, of 'The Glass Key'.

Greatly inspired by, at least. Dash's books all make great movies, its odd to me nobody really seems to take advantage of that. Like eight movies have been made of Red Harvest, but none of them the original story.

Perfect pitch gangster movie, set in... the 20s? 30s? Forgive me for not caring which, I guess it's 20s, because I believe booze is illegal.

Anyhoo, lots of violence, some scene chewing acting, twists and turns and edge of your seat drama... and if you're a damn and Gabriel Byrne doesn't melt your knickers, then... you ain't wearin' any knickers!

Oh gawd, they will never capture the humor and the *Heart* of the original. Because in the end, it is really a very sweet movie. They're going to squat on top of this story and shit in its mouth.

Agreed and no way they recreate the rental car scene. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard as I did when I watched that. I was literally crying I was laughing so hard. Martin was genius in it. And John Candy.. I mean who doesn't love that guy?

Posted by: Jewells45 at September 03, 2020 05:05 PM

This. All of it. From the movie's warmth and heart to the rental car scene to just everything about John Candy in that movie. I cried from laughing so hard during the movie and I cried from the heartfelt moments through it all. Realizing the truth about John Candy's character's wife in the movie and all the pain he's endured in his life, yet he still tries to be a kind and wonderful person. One of my favorite all time movies.

You can't remake "heart" of a movie or the unique loveableness (is that a word?) of a person like John Candy. You love the character because of the character, but you also love the character, because it's John Candy.

563 John Cleese was doing an interview (for Fawlty Towers I think) and the subject came up about A Fish Called Wanda vs. Fierce Creatures (both movies starred Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin playing completely different characters in a completely different story).

A Fish Called Wanda was well received while Fierce Creatures was pretty much panned (I actually like both movies). Cleese said that the problem with Fierce Creatures wasn't Fierce Creatures, it was A Fish Called Wanda because people were expecting the movies to be similar since the cast was primarily the same.

If you're doing a remake, you can

scour the internet for all the "problematic" things people have found in

own new movie with problematic things in it

612 Ender's Game did suffer from an extreme shortage of battle school scenes. That should have dominated the movie like it did the book, you never really got a convincing sense of growth and change in Ender through it. It was somewhere between Central Intelligence and Drving School (or night schjool or whastever the title was) that we put our finger on it. Kevin Hart movies, while having Black actors, are never center by 'blackness'. The characters are not defined by their race. The humor is not racial. It's just humor.
We speculate this has to be because of the actor, too many producers and directors rolling through for credit otherwise - he is the consistent factor.

630 I love the film, but the hypocrisy is pretty rank. And that's because the subtext of nuclear disarmament became more important than the actual story. It's more important to make the point that nuclear weapons are bad than to have the antagonist's motives makes total sense.

Still, I kinda get it. "We're responsible with this stuff, and you aren't."

I like the original - Klaatu Barada Nikto! But it really is "Space Jesus", they even had to tone down some of it because the studio thought it was way too blatant. Perfect hero comes to Earth from Beyond, he performs miracles, he is murdered by the stupid hateful people of Earth for no reason, then he rises from the dead and offers them all Salvation, but the must Reform their Wicked Ways and Stive for Piece. When they ask him for an Earth name, he uses "Mr. Carpenter". Carpenter, get it?

It's amazingly blatant. But still - there's GORT! I love Gort!

I know that's kind of what they were going for, but in my opinion, many of them are downers that go way over the top.

Ignore the original premise and just make a similarly themed actual comedy and it could absolutely kill. But even release a TRAILER that makes it look like they're going for the same vibe as the original and it bombs.

I have to say though that although I don't even really watch black movies, there is something to be said for watching people who "look like you" or share your culture in movies. It can be a sort of comforting, home-y feeling. But then the people behind the movie just have to accept the fact that it may have limited appeal, unless it tackles universal themes in a really effective way.

Posted by: chique l'African Viking Queen of Greenland (don't forget that Epstein didn't off hisself) at September 03, 2020 05:52 PM

Universal themes. Nicely said. That's what I was trying to explain, but couldn't think of the way to summarize it.

But that's what I was trying to say. That black actors are not rejected and maybe not even black movies, so long as the movie touches on universal themes, instead of stereotypical black culture themes.

For example, I really liked the actress Taraji P. Henson when she played a tough, no-nonsense police officer in the series Person of Interest. I watched the show because I saw it had two of my favorite actors Michael Emerson (who I thought was amazing in LOST) and Jim Caviezel whose movies I have always liked. But then that show introduced me to Taraji P. Henson. I thought her character was awesome.

Then I was so disheartened when she then went on to play a lead role in the series Empire. I never watched it, but from the previews it looked like just a stereotypical black culture movie of corruption and violence and criminality.

But, I dunno. I seem to be unique in my preferences for movies and TV and music, so I don't claim to know what is typical of any other group. Like I said, I am biased, and I guess I just *hope* that what I think is what is reality... that black actors and black movies are not rejected, so much as "typical black culture" themes are rejected.

704 ENDER'S GAME!!!!!!!

The book was WONDERFUL!!!!!

The sequel, Speaker For The Dead, was also goddamn amazing, as were the final two books in the series.

Highly, HIGHLY, recommended.

The movie was aggressively *meh*.

705 Jack Ryan Season 1 Villain: Islamic terrorist - excellent character development showing his humanity without excusing his evil.

Season 2 villain: Right wing dictator of freaking Venezuela, opposed by sweet left wing liberal teacher. This during the reign/ruin of socialist Maduro. Ruined the suspension of disbelief. They also made Jack Ryan an emotional sissy.

Sigh.

I like David Lynch's "DUNE" quite a bit.

Mostly, because he takes the bio-psychic aspect of the book's technology and just runs with it.

As a result, it looks like no other space/future movie out there.

The new "DUNE" looks like more of the same "future" we've seen a million times before. Even more so now with the superfluous stunt casting.

Plus, Lynch's "DUNE" does an excellent job short-handing the book in one movie and is easy to follow.

Good job, Lynchy-baby!

709 Then you didn't get it. The alien race is annihilated at the end of Ender's Game. He understands them, and sympathizes with them, and then he becomes Speaker for the Dead. Because they're all dead, and he killed them.
Posted by: Tom Servo

Literal genocide of an entire race is a pretty awful thing. The humans didn't quite understand why they were attacked by a hive- minded society.
Ender didn't even quite realize that he was fighting a real war when they thought they were doing simulations.
In the end, he did take the hive-queen's off spring (larvae), and later plants it on another world. In the sequel.

I don't think it was "wokeness" (is that a word?), so much as guilt as to what he had been tricked into doing.

Of course, the Ender character in the movie was kind of unlikable.

Their movies are very hit and miss. I did like Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou? but Burn After Reading should have been titled Burn Before Watching. But it did have Brad Pitt getting shot in the face, so we have that going for us, which is nice.

Have heard good things about Barton Fink, but have never seen it.

712 I'm not against remakes on principle - after all, the great John Huston/Humphrey Bogart version of "The Maltese Falcon" from 1941 is a remake of a film made just ten years earlier - but this works only for movies whose original versions suck. And such movies are remade only if the underlying material is well known and very strong; again, "The Maltese Falcon" is a good example of an excellent book made twice into a movie, where the second version was the one that clicked. Another example is the Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" - a great and popular book whose first filming, the animated version by Ralph Bakshi from 1971, was dreadful beyond description. Most of the remakes we see today, though, are of successful movies rather than of failed attempts at a strong story; and almost by definition, these cannot be as good as the original.

The Queen is dying - it doesn't matter if he lets her go or not. He communicates with her telepathically and gets the last egg, which is dormant. He promises that he will find a world on which he will help the race become re-established, because he is filled with remorse that he had been tricked into committing genocide.

But all that is left is one egg. No living aliens.

I have to say though that although I don't even really watch black movies, there is something to be said for watching people who "look like you" or share your culture in movies. It can be a sort of comforting, home-y feeling.

Posted by: chique l'African Viking Queen of Greenland (don't forget that Epstein didn't off hisself) at September 03, 2020 05:52 PM

Oh and the whole comfort of seeing people who "look like you", that is a great point.

And it's why I wish there were more movies -- black movies, universal theme movies with black characters, whatever -- where the Black characters or storylines were not shown to be the "typical black culture" theme.

That's why I loved The Cosby Show back in the '80s-'90s. I grew up on that show. I didn't think of it as a black show either. I just saw it as another version of a family show that I liked along with shows like The Wonder Years, Family Ties and Growing Pains.

Hollywood has moved away from shows and movies that depict those types of healthy families. With the excuse that families today are not like that or something. But wouldn't it be a good thing to show something that people could strive for? Or, if they're going to show broken families, show them succeeding despite their troubles. Show them working hard to support their children or the children doing positive things instead of the typical gang or drug storylines. That is what they did in Person of Interest with Taraji P Henson's character. She was a great parent and role model for her son and her son was depicted as working hard in school and staying out of trouble. It was so refreshing and wonderful to see.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at September 03, 2020 06:16 PM (Do5/p)

719 Gwyneth Paltrow, before she became deranged, did a nice turn in a flick that struck me as an original idea, called "Sliding Doors." She either misses or makes getting on the subway by just a second. The rest of the movie is the progression of her life and loves done with interleaved scenes of what happens when she catches the train vs. what happens if she has to wait for the next one.

Mrs. Botch and I both enjoyed it, and have watched it more than once, though not in well over a decade.

723 Orson Scott Card is conservative, so Ender was far from "woke".

But he is Mormon.

The aliens in Ender's Game never consider that sentient life could be completely different from themselves. Humanity makes the exact same mistake. The thought never occurs to anyone until after Ender annihilates the entire species.

Speaker For The Dead tackles some of the same issues but with a different and oddly unsettling species.

I don't deny that I am probably a bit naive on that stuff. Despite my heart hardening over the last 20 years as I've become politically aware and realized that people are not generally kind by nature, but rather generally evil... I still have a small part of my innocence of childhood left where I assumed the best in people. I try to keep myself seeing people as individuals instead of as a group. I don't always succeed, but I try.

If only for the part where he beats the shit out of his bully to send a message that not only did he win that fight, but he won every future fight. Because by beating him so mercilessly in this fight, there would never be another fight, because now they were scared of him.

There are some antifa and BLM assholes who need to be taught that lesson.

732 Will Smith, lately, is the type of actor who wants to be in comedies, as long as everyone is the joke, because he wants to keep his air of cool so he can make big budget movies that he and his talentless kids can embezzled from.

I think Martin Larence would be a better fit, he can do smarmy, cool and also slap-stick comedy, and Kevin is a big enough star he doesn't need another A lister.

735 Sorry some movies are impossible to remake. Think Godfather. Hollywood is bankrupt. It turns out comic book movies that are dead after six months. Do we really need another Overboard disaster or bad remake of Ocean's 11?

Don't even hint at remaking The Godfather. If someone in Hollywood heard the words "Godfather" and "remake" together, we'd end up with The Godfather, starring Whoopi Goldberg as Donna Corleone.

Excuse me. I just threw up in my mouth a little.
