Jerry Falwell, Jr. recently explained his strange behavior recently as being due to his wife having an affair with another man -- a man who then extorted money from the couple, threatening to reveal the secret.“It was like living on a roller coaster,” he said in the statement. “While completely dedicating ourselves to Liberty, we were also suffering in silence during our personal time together, while simultaneously trying to manage and deal with this increasingly threatening behavior, which only worsened over time. We were doing our best to respectfully unravel this ‘fatal attraction’ type situation to protect our family and the university.” He said that while they tried to remain friendly with the man and his family, the threats and texts demanding huge amounts of money led them to cut him off. “While we tried to distance ourselves from him over time, he unfortunately became increasingly angry and aggressive. Eventually, he began threatening to publicly reveal this secret relationship with Becki and to deliberately embarrass my wife, family, and Liberty University unless we agreed to pay him substantial monies,” the couple said. In 2012, the Falwells said they were impressed with the pool assistant and wanted to help him start in business. Falwell's wife worked a deal to buy a Miami hostel and put him in charge. The deal has been tangled in legal challenges. It was while Jerry Falwell was working long hours to build up the university, which he took over after his father Jerry Falwell Sr. died in 2007, that Becki had the affair.He says he lost 80 pounds from stress. But now the third man has come forward, and he's got a different story. Note, of course, that this guy is himself a shady operator and shouldn't be believed just because his story comes second, after Falwell's. Also note that this character needs to explain why the couple gave him money -- if it wasn't extortion, what was it? So he has a reason to invent some semi-plausible counter-explanation.

Embattled Christian-right big Jerry Falwell Jr., 58, detailed his wife's "indiscretion," which he described as brief and starting in 2012, in a stunning lengthy statement to the Washington Examiner on Sunday. Falwell Jr. made a point to add that he was "not involved" with his spouse's "inappropriate personal relationship" with former pool boy Giancarlo Granda, now 29, while describing his wife Becki’s affair as “a fatal attraction-type situation -- and adding the couple have been paying for it ever since in terms of threats and fear. But Granda told Reuters that his affair with Becki, 53, lasted from March 2012 to 2018 -- and that Falwell would happily watch the pair get it on.Pool boy? Are you kidding me? Giiancarlo Granda says he was 20 when he met Jerry and Becki Falwell while working as a pool attendant at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel in March 2012. Starting that month and continuing into 2018, Granda told Reuters that the relationship involved him having sex with Becki Falwell while Jerry Falwell looked on. Granda showed Reuters emails, text messages and other evidence that he says demonstrate the sexual nature of his relationship with the couple, who have been married since 1987. “Becki and I developed an intimate relationship and Jerry enjoyed watching from the corner of the room,” Granda said in an interview. Now 29, he described the liaisons as frequent – “multiple times per year” – and said the encounters took place at hotels in Miami and New York, and at the Falwells’ home in Virginia. His friendship with the Falwells eventually soured, Granda told Reuters, in part because he wanted to dissolve his ties with the couple and fell into a business dispute with them. Granda first emerged as a figure in the Falwells’ circle two years ago, when BuzzFeed News reported that the couple had befriended Granda and gone into business with him, buying a Miami Beach youth hostel in 2013.A youth hostel? Everyone sins. Conservatives, or at least the Christian ones, acknowledge that, and also realize that forgiveness is the one single thing we seek from God, and are given it when we ask and are contrite.
Liberals and anti-theists have no morals so they think they don't commit sins. They do, of course, they just don't acknowlege it. They may not think they need God, but everyone does.
Liberals claim that conservatives sin against "social justice" whatever that might be this week, but there is no metric for that. Liberals just use that as a bashing tool, but it means nothing.

Larry Flynt wrote a very nice letter about Jerry Falwell Sr after JFSr died. Apparently Jerry Sr was kind to him and Larry Flynt never forgot it and this was AFTER a lawsuit. They decided to go around the country and do debates. Larry got to know him and thought he was the real deal though wrong (from Larry's perspective). Larry got into some serious health issue and one of the first calls he got was Jerry Falwell Sr, checking to make sure he was taken care of. It made an impression.

Well the affair and the pool boy status appears to be confirmed. The only question is whether he was watching/a participant. I would be more inclined to believe Falwell if he talked about the difficulty of forgiving his wife and the strain the affair put on the marriage rather than how he tried to be buddies with the guy his wife was sleeping with.

He was not, at least, in the sense of Bakker, that guy with the gold gilt chair...TBN or something, and the Prosperity Faith types. Falwell believed in sharing the Gospel with any and everybody.
But... (there is always a but) he was not financially forthcoming about Thomas Road or Liberty, and that was problematic for me. We were members of Thomas Road, I taught at Liberty for a year, our kids went to Lynchburg Christian Academy. That experience, sadly, turned our kids away from the church. I love many of the people we met there, I met some truly amazing warriors for the Gospel, and interestingly, all of us got away from Liberty as soon as we could. Mainly because of Jerry Jr and how he kept the financial secrets, etc, but had no love for others.

I don't think so, it was just difficult to get financial disclosures, like you would at most churches who provide a yearly explanation of expenses, etc to justify budgets. There was none of that with the Thomas Road enterprises. But I don't believe he used it to benefit himself- he gave tremendous amounts of money to missions, a shelter for the homeless, and crisis pregnancy center. As for Jerry Jr, I don't doubt he was keepin' money for he and Becky. They were not very nice.

He's been through that phase as a kid. He would sell tickets to visitors who came to see the Graham house in North Carolina (he is 8 or 9) charging them five dollars to drive up to the house. He had made a good bit of money until his parents found out and put a stop to it. At one point his mother got fed up with him, had to go somewhere and stuck him in the trunk of the car so he couldn't get up to stuff while she was gone.
He rebelled against his father early and then had a literal, true come-to-Jesus moment. At that point, he has dedicated himself and his work to sharing the Gospel and caring for others in Christ's name. Samaritan's Purse is an excellent charity and does good things.

I belong to something of an Evangelical MegaChurch, and I suspect you're right. I have friend that was going through some marital counseling and really disgusted with what he told me with how it was being handled. Nothing sexual, but just seems really corrupt and rotten.
I guess I should just be thankful there aren't young boys being molested.

What Falwell attempts to do is relate what the gospel says. Like most men in the Bible he fails at carrying out God's will.
I'm not a big fan of Falwell. I am however a big fan of God and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Enjoying Falwell's descent into sin because he's trying to articulate the Bible's teaching, is expressing your abomination against God.
You don't like Falwell as a man? That's your cross to carry. But not liking what he's teaching is another matter. Seems like a lot of the detractors are expressing the latter.

Franklin Graham does a lot of good work through Samaritan's and the ministry. Maybe one should not assume he's grifting or guilty of sexual misconduct-until we actually have stories which can be verified.

It's easier to keep donors writing checks when the last name is the same.
I know in some cases this is sincere, but everyone should be wary when these organizations are literally run like a business when family "inherits" donors.

I heard it from Anne Graham Lotz at a luncheon at Thomas Road, in fact. She was seated at my table and we were crying over the stories she told us about Franklin. He was apparently a nightmare child who turned it around.

I'm not against all televangelists, though many are scum of course. A few do seem to be interested a public education function; Gene Scott's daughter Melissa is not so bad and, the few times I've seen her program, seems to be focused more on textual criticism of the Bible than carnival-barker "Ah am looking for a seeeeeed" sermons.
Not sure what's wrong with Jerry Jr. other than that he's a putz, obviously...

Hes not a preacher and I certainly wouldnt describe Liberty as anything less than first rate anymore. Conservative, allows debate, 1A freedom campus, has programs that arent strictly religious or theology degrees.
