NBA Ratings Down 45%, Despite Many Still Being Locked Up Inside Their Homes
A year and a half ago, while the sports media gushed over the NBA, I pointed out that the league’s ratings were troubling. They've continued to worsen, highlighted by last season’s double-digit Finals decline. This week, the most troubling stat yet was publicized. The Athletic's Ethan Strauss pointed out, since 2011-12, the NBA on ABC is down 45%. Nearly half. ABC is the NBA’s premium partner. Nearly every broadcast, it showcases top matchups and players. Yet, viewers are tuning out an alarming rate. "In that hastily promoted lockout season, [2011-12], ABC games drew 5.42 million viewers on average," Strauss writes. "The final tally on this latest 2019-20 season was 2.95 million average viewers on ABC games. Every ABC game from 2011-2012 received higher viewership than 2.95 million, save for a meaningless late season 1 p.m. Thunder-Bulls game that Derrick Rose sat out." A decline of this magnitude is astounding. There is no explanation other than the interest in watching the NBA on television is rapidly diminishing.Allow a nobody from Yahoo "News" to disagree! A woman (I assume) sportswriter for Yahoo says this is no big deal, low ratings are just terrific. This article is a classic of the genre, "It's actually true but it's false because Trump says it." This AWFL woman, who probably doesn't watch sports, admits that sports ratings, particularly for the NBA, are way down... But then she says, without evidence, that a decline in interest in sports does not prove a decline in interest in sports. Oh? Do tell, low-paid bottom-feeding garbage-tier-media drudge.
The return of live sports was supposed to usher in an explosion of interest. Americans were going to hunker down in front of their TVs and watch in record numbers because, well, there’s not much else to do during a pandemic and everyone has missed their favorite distraction. But that didn't quite happen. In fact, a cursory glance at TV ratings and headlines about viewership suggests the overall interest in sports may even be down. The NBA’s ratings were already down a bit from last year, and they dipped again when sports started back up after the COVID-19 suspension. NASCAR started red-hot as one of first major American sports back on network television during the pandemic, but then dropped to below-average ratings. And MLS, which didn't have high expectations to begin with, still managed to underperform. Are people put off by the awkward lack of crowds? Are they too focused on the pandemic and the upcoming presidential election? Do they not consider bubble tournaments "real" competitions? All those things may be true. But TV ratings don't actually show that people have suddenly become less interested in sports.Of course not, Dear. Spinal Tap's appeal has merely grown more selctive.
A closer look shows that viewing habits are changing during the pandemic, but sports are as popular as ever. And as much as conservative pundits and even President Donald Trump have tried to turn the NBA into their latest political wedge, the NBA has little reason to worry.See that part at the end? Where she tells you "Ignore the facts, I'm about to give you perspective that contradicts them"? It's entirely an empty promise. She quotes someone saying something vague about viewing habits changing during the lockdown -- indeed, people's viewing habits have changed, in the sense that they've stopped watching the NBA -- but never delivers on why the NBA shouldn't worry about losing 45%!! of its viewers. It's almost as if she's just a know-nothing blogger armed with some Intersectional Feminist Theory and some Orange Man Bad dogma and she knows that her job is just to provide the laziest, shallowest gainsaying of anything Trump says, and that Yahoo will not demand she actually supply evidence for her claims. In other words: It's a standard media "fact-check." There are no facts supplied to back up the claim that Orange Man False, but that's okay, the naked assertion of it will do. Everyone knows that's the Right Answer you're supposed to get to, no matter how you get to it. You really should read this. It's an amazing exercise in wheel-spinning, as if she's an undergraduate freshman struggling to hit that Minimum Word Count. Here's as close as she gets to proving ratings don't actually measure ratings:
To use ratings to determine if people are watching sports, it’s important to understand what TV ratings actually measure. Contrary to what people assume, they are not just the number of people who watched something on TV. Instead, TV ratings are a calculated average derived from the number who watched and how long they watched for. In other words, if an NBA game reached the same number of people, but everyone watched a few minutes less because there is also baseball, hockey and soccer on TV, the NBA's ratings will go down.In other words... people are not watching the NBA to watch something else. This, she claims, proves that Trump is wrong when he says that people aren't watching the NBA.

Trying to play basketball using a tennis ball instead of an actual basketball is MUCH much more difficult.
You'd think that a much smaller ball would make it much easier to get it through the the hoop.
But some family members came over the other day and we found ourselves at a local park that had basketball hoops, but nobody has a basketball with them, until someone found a tennis ball on the lawn, so we decide to play a game of "HORSE" using the tennis ball.
TUrns out -- it was nearly impossible to get the tennis ball through the hoop! Even people who were good at normal-sized-ball basketball found it extremely difficult. It was very strange.

A while back I was sent some sample packet of protein poweder with which one can make protein drinks. The sweetener in the powder is stevia -- something I didn't notice at first.
It's a hot day, so i just whipped up a protein mini-smoothie in the blender using this sample pack, and when i first tasted it, I was like, Whaaa--?? Something's wrong here." Tasted it again, wrinkled my nose, and looked at the ingredient list on the packet. Stevia. Boom. That was it.
To me, Stevia gives a taste of aluminum foil mixed with turmeric and artificially flavored pipe tobacco.. A truly heinous combination.

I'm curious to know if the drop in TV revenue is linear, i.e. when companies buy commercial slots for next season are they going to pay 45% less? Or are they already paying less because the cost is somehow tied to ratings?

I have never sat in my seat for an entire Mariner's game, I walk around the stadium and enjoy the sights and sounds of fans and the views.
No fans, no fun, no ticket.
Watching on the TV just reminds me of why I would want to go again, to enjoy the atmosphere.

NASCAR started off well and then decided BLM and a noose hoax were the way to go. All of the other major sports went in on the BLM crusade to varying degrees. You have several things at play. People found other things to do and aren't interested in watching sports now. The lack of fans in the stands actually provides unconscious messages that sports aren't important or social. People aren't at work to talk together about sports. And finally, getting political simply pushed a lot of people to give it all up.

NASCAR started off well and then decided BLM and a noose hoax were the way to go. All of the other major sports went in on the BLM crusade to varying degrees. You have several things at play. People found other things to do and aren't interested in watching sports now. The lack of fans in the stands actually provides unconscious messages that sports aren't important or social. People aren't at work to talk together about sports. And finally, getting political simply pushed a lot of people to give it all up.

How so? I knew some people, probably all women, who would only watch the NBA when Jordan played. He was marketed extremely well by David Stern, who ran the league like a fucking crime boss (a buddy and I still refer to him as Don Stern) but the current cocksucker is running it into the ground. I used to have season tickets to the Sabres for years. When they moved to the new arena, I dropped them, and just watched the game on TV.
I got spoiled with TV replays, and TV camera angles, and not fighting the crowds to get home.
Now when I do go to a game, I miss half the action because I'm not used to paying attention...and I really hate the traffic driving home.

I was at Michigan Tech during their heyday under coach John MacInnes. They played in the WCHA against Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Denver, North Dakota State, and Colorado School of Mines. Three visits to the NCAA Frozen Four, with one championship and two runner-up finishes. Those teams were a thing of beauty to see and the program has been nowhere near as good since.

I think they even said that after the initial rush, streaming was even down a bit. Once the weather got nice, getting out and going for a walk or working outside became an option. Plus, people aren't locking down the way the shrill feminized establishment want you to believe.

Frozen Four has been something I've wanted to see for a long time, almost did, with guys from old DC hockey team, a while back. College hockey is generally very good, for several reasons, often better than the pro version. Disparity of ability level between players, intensity of play, no boring b.s. allowed.
Very disappointing to see even the limited extent of NHL dalliance with racist-totalitarianism, but it's a sign of the overall cultural decline, probably unavoidable.

See now, I love hockey, but I constantly lose the puck if I try to watch a game at a large venue. Watching on TV is much easier, and I'm always amazed that the cameramen can keep track of that thing, and I'm very appreciative of replays.

Friend of mine several years back was learning Mandarin Chinese, and had several 'conversation partners" with Chinese students, in which half the time was spent teaching the students English, and half the time was spent teaching my friend Chinese.
Occasionally, she later reported, the subject of race came up during these teaching-conversations, and the level of (as we would define it) "racism" was so off the charts that the average American liberal's head would immediately explode.
Without getting into specifics, the general attitude among newly arrived Chinese immigrants was that blacks were not actually human beings, but some sort of species of violent ape, and that going anywhere near them was practically suicidal. THe Chinese didn't see this as being "racist" at all -- just a completely understandable and reasonable fear of a wild predator.

We visited the zoo in Chattanooga last year. It was
fantastic, but leaving was heartbreaking because we drove through communities that the city had overtaken. Beautiful old two and three story homes that would cost a half million dollars 20 miles away, and most of them boarded up and falling down. Occasionally you'd pass some crappy sign about "community revitalization project", but it's pointless.

I used to read recaps a lot. Back when I managed people, most of the people who worked for me (it was small team, but I had to interact with even more) liked one sport or another. I only really like baseball. So I found recaps and league updates to helpful in the practice of making small talk with people who care about it. I would do the same thing with very popular television programs that I didn't want to watch.

In person of course you also lose the near-boards view, depending on your seats (or, if in either end, half the play is FAR away). This is where knowing the game comes in. You'll usually know what's about to happen/is happening in the blind spot based on everyone's position, direction, etc., and also what *should* happen next.

After the NFL gave the Saints a Superbowl berth because of Katrina, it became apparent the NFL was completely rigged.
Then, I started noticing a lot of players skating on felonies, felonies I'd still be in jail over, I gave up on the NFL entirely.
I became a baseball aficionado, learning about the subtleties of the game, hating the Yankees, the usual things.
Then, MLB went woke, which I tried to overlook, but, the Floyd tribute was a bridge too far. On top of that, the Floyd tribute took place after a good chunk of Minneapolis had burned down.
So much for baseball.
The NBA never really interested me. I'm happy to report my lack of interest never waned.
I guess I'll just have to stick to the shooting sports and books, with woodworking projects and home repairs tossed in.
I suspect I'll somehow manage.

Take a trip to West New York, NJ. Most amazing city. Even the buses (lots of them) are private. (I believe they have a city bus system also) A dollar a ride, and a hell of a lot of little buses everywhere. The way it works in the NBA is the more famous and popular you are, the more steps you get to take before the refs will blow a whistle. Some third round pick in his first season will get called after two steps, but a Shaq or Jordan level star just has to bounce the ball once that quarter.

As for the inside scoop on the NBA - yeah they're seemingly playing it cool but my wife says that they're trying to make up the loss of ticket revenue by milking the sponsors - one of which is my wife's health system she works for.
She says that they've asked for a sponsorship agreement duration 2.5x longer than what they've asked for in the past. She seems to think that they just like the quality of the medical care they're getting as part of that sponsorship....

Missionary Ridge is fantastic, but I had read of a site called Orchard Knob, so tracked it down. It's only a few blocks from the zoo, in the middle of a rundown, ghettoized part of Chattanooga, but I found the sign and said, we gotta see this. It's about 3 or 4 acres, it's an elevated rocky knob that rises above the rest of the landscape there, and it's where the Federal Command post was during the battle because it had a commanding view of everything. You walk up the trail, out of the tawdriness of the city, and suddenly you step into this magnificent military park with statuary, cannon from the battle, an absolutely incredible spot. And then you have to walk back down into the dreariness of the present day.

My grandfather had a Chris Craft on Lake Erie and he'd take us out to all the islands and fish before the lake died and the Cuyahoga river caught fire. Cedar Point was a special treat for us. Now the lake is one of the best walleye fisheries in the country. A real success story.

It would get ugly for a few seasons. Sportscasters would continually berate the league during games. Players would think up stunts to embarrass the league and have to be disciplined somehow. Some portion of the fans might decide it was all too much of a shit show and leave.
Of course, if the league had brought out the pimp hand on day 1 they could have avoided it all, but they're basically cowards with a whole lot of money.

My grandfather had a Chris Craft on Lake Erie and he'd take us out to all the islands and fish before the lake died and the Cuyahoga river caught fire. Cedar Point was a special treat for us. Now the lake is one of the best walleye fisheries in the country. A real success story.

What happened was terrifying to them - and it's what is happening in Dem run "woke" cities today. It wasn't everyone leaving, it was all of the productive people - the engineers, the professionals, the doctors, the people who ran the local shops, they were the ones who had the drive and desire to know they had to find a way out. Those who were staying were the elderly, the indigent, the mentally ill, those incapable of performing any work, the criminal class. They slapped up the wall to try and stop it.
That's where NYC is going to be very, very soon. A city of several million indigent people, sick people, unemployable people, and a very large criminal class. no one else.

All those things may be true. But TV ratings don't actually show that people have suddenly become less interested in sports.
This is 100% true. My interest in sports is the same as it always was. I'm a sports nut and that is never going to change.
But I do notice the one question not asked here:

Hmmm, let's see... YES.
*That* is why I have not tuned back in to watch sports since the restart. Plain and simple.
I am still a massive sports fan. And I still would love to tune in again to watch the world's most elite athletes in each sport compete.
But I 100% refuse to support anyone who literally bends the knee to support and promote anti-America, radical Marxist domestic terrorists.
It's that fucking simple.
And I will not go back to watching any of the leagues until they not only stop supporting terrorists, but put out a statement denouncing their previous support.
Since that will likely never happen, I likely will never go back to watching American professional sports leagues again.
