Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | NBA Ratings Down 45%, Despite Many Still Being Locked Up Inside Their HomesA year and a half ago, while the sports media gushed over the NBA, I pointed out that the league’s ratings were troubling. They've continued to worsen, highlighted by last season’s double-digit Finals decline. This week, the most troubling stat yet was publicized. The Athletic's Ethan Strauss pointed out, since 2011-12, the NBA on ABC is down 45%. Nearly half. ABC is the NBA’s premium partner. Nearly every broadcast, it showcases top matchups and players. Yet, viewers are tuning out an alarming rate. "In that hastily promoted lockout season, [2011-12], ABC games drew 5.42 million viewers on average," Strauss writes. "The final tally on this latest 2019-20 season was 2.95 million average viewers on ABC games. Every ABC game from 2011-2012 received higher viewership than 2.95 million, save for a meaningless late season 1 p.m. Thunder-Bulls game that Derrick Rose sat out." A decline of this magnitude is astounding. There is no explanation other than the interest in watching the NBA on television is rapidly diminishing.Allow a nobody from Yahoo "News" to disagree! A woman (I assume) sportswriter for Yahoo says this is no big deal, low ratings are just terrific. This article is a classic of the genre, "It's actually true but it's false because Trump says it." This AWFL woman, who probably doesn't watch sports, admits that sports ratings, particularly for the NBA, are way down... But then she says, without evidence, that a decline in interest in sports does not prove a decline in interest in sports. Oh? Do tell, low-paid bottom-feeding garbage-tier-media drudge. The return of live sports was supposed to usher in an explosion of interest. Americans were going to hunker down in front of their TVs and watch in record numbers because, well, there’s not much else to do during a pandemic and everyone has missed their favorite distraction. But that didn't quite happen. In fact, a cursory glance at TV ratings and headlines about viewership suggests the overall interest in sports may even be down. The NBA’s ratings were already down a bit from last year, and they dipped again when sports started back up after the COVID-19 suspension. NASCAR started red-hot as one of first major American sports back on network television during the pandemic, but then dropped to below-average ratings. And MLS, which didn't have high expectations to begin with, still managed to underperform. Are people put off by the awkward lack of crowds? Are they too focused on the pandemic and the upcoming presidential election? Do they not consider bubble tournaments "real" competitions? All those things may be true. But TV ratings don't actually show that people have suddenly become less interested in sports.Of course not, Dear. Spinal Tap's appeal has merely grown more selctive. A closer look shows that viewing habits are changing during the pandemic, but sports are as popular as ever. And as much as conservative pundits and even President Donald Trump have tried to turn the NBA into their latest political wedge, the NBA has little reason to worry.See that part at the end? Where she tells you "Ignore the facts, I'm about to give you perspective that contradicts them"? It's entirely an empty promise. She quotes someone saying something vague about viewing habits changing during the lockdown -- indeed, people's viewing habits have changed, in the sense that they've stopped watching the NBA -- but never delivers on why the NBA shouldn't worry about losing 45%!! of its viewers. It's almost as if she's just a know-nothing blogger armed with some Intersectional Feminist Theory and some Orange Man Bad dogma and she knows that her job is just to provide the laziest, shallowest gainsaying of anything Trump says, and that Yahoo will not demand she actually supply evidence for her claims. In other words: It's a standard media "fact-check." There are no facts supplied to back up the claim that Orange Man False, but that's okay, the naked assertion of it will do. Everyone knows that's the Right Answer you're supposed to get to, no matter how you get to it. You really should read this. It's an amazing exercise in wheel-spinning, as if she's an undergraduate freshman struggling to hit that Minimum Word Count. Here's as close as she gets to proving ratings don't actually measure ratings: To use ratings to determine if people are watching sports, it’s important to understand what TV ratings actually measure. Contrary to what people assume, they are not just the number of people who watched something on TV. Instead, TV ratings are a calculated average derived from the number who watched and how long they watched for. In other words, if an NBA game reached the same number of people, but everyone watched a few minutes less because there is also baseball, hockey and soccer on TV, the NBA's ratings will go down.In other words... people are not watching the NBA to watch something else. This, she claims, proves that Trump is wrong when he says that people aren't watching the NBA. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I discovered something surprising the other day:
Trying to play basketball using a tennis ball instead of an actual basketball is MUCH much more difficult. You'd think that a much smaller ball would make it much easier to get it through the the hoop. But some family members came over the other day and we found ourselves at a local park that had basketball hoops, but nobody has a basketball with them, until someone found a tennis ball on the lawn, so we decide to play a game of "HORSE" using the tennis ball. TUrns out -- it was nearly impossible to get the tennis ball through the hoop! Even people who were good at normal-sized-ball basketball found it extremely difficult. It was very strange. Willowed comment about Stevia from previous dead thread:
Y'know, I've given stevia chance after chance, but after today's latest taste-test, I can state conclusively: I hate stevia. A while back I was sent some sample packet of protein poweder with which one can make protein drinks. The sweetener in the powder is stevia -- something I didn't notice at first. It's a hot day, so i just whipped up a protein mini-smoothie in the blender using this sample pack, and when i first tasted it, I was like, Whaaa--?? Something's wrong here." Tasted it again, wrinkled my nose, and looked at the ingredient list on the packet. Stevia. Boom. That was it. To me, Stevia gives a taste of aluminum foil mixed with turmeric and artificially flavored pipe tobacco.. A truly heinous combination. Posted by: zombie at August 21, 2020 04:02 PM (HEEq1) 49

The ratings decline for the NBA and MLB is even worse when you consider that people cannot watch from a sports bar this year. Home is the only place someone can watch the game and the people aren't watching there either. So the number of missing eyeballs from the telecasts is even more substantial.

It doesn't matter what the cause is. A 45% drop in customer engagement would make any business worried. Terrified, even. Part of any sportsball is the fun of mingling with the crowd. I have never sat in my seat for an entire Mariner's game, I walk around the stadium and enjoy the sights and sounds of fans and the views. No fans, no fun, no ticket. 96 The NBA has a deal with China to broadcast in China on the government owned network, no competition.
The NBA has deals to get their merchandise made in slave labor camps, so much lower cost. The NBA can deprecate Americans all they want, as the Chinese love to see that sort of thing. All the NBA wants from Americans is for them to keep paying for their stadiums. Posted by: Weaning is hard at August 21, 2020 04:11 PM (2DOZq) How so? I knew some people, probably all women, who would only watch the NBA when Jordan played. He was marketed extremely well by David Stern, who ran the league like a fucking crime boss (a buddy and I still refer to him as Don Stern) but the current cocksucker is running it into the ground. Jordan was a prick and surely was banned for a season for gambling problems that got his father murdered, but he was very talented. Posted by: Captain Hate at August 21, 2020 04:19 PM (y7DUB) 194
have to say I think MLB or at least the Yankees have been pretty buttoned up. With the exception of opening day, I think they are filtering all the SJW bullshit through some kind of players charity for inner city and blah blah blah.
Or the directors/producers just keeping the cameras off all the nonsense. Either way, been watching baseball without the tinge of politics which is as it should be. That the Yankees are still (mostly) buttoned up goes back to George Steibrenner. Remember, this is a team that still doesn't allow players to grow facial hair. Sports like other tastes are personal, but hockey in person can be very good. But it's one game where actually "knowing" the sport makes a big difference, playing it of course helps with this. Enjoyable just as it is, but (when well played) a lot more to it if you sort of know what you're seeing happen.
Frozen Four has been something I've wanted to see for a long time, almost did, with guys from old DC hockey team, a while back. College hockey is generally very good, for several reasons, often better than the pro version. Disparity of ability level between players, intensity of play, no boring b.s. allowed. Very disappointing to see even the limited extent of NHL dalliance with racist-totalitarianism, but it's a sign of the overall cultural decline, probably unavoidable. Sportwriters write about politics because there's honestly not a lot to write about as a sportwriter that's interesting. There's:
(1) game recap, which is inessential to anyone who saw it; and most who didn't watch it don't give care about anything but the final score - if they did, they'd have watched it. A prose description of an amazing sportsball feat is boring. (2) prognostication, which is full of useful info if you are a dedicated fan or running a fantasy team; but this is of no interest to casuals. And casuals make up a significant part of the sports audience. There's a lot of beta males who don't want to feel like an alien in the breakroom. (3) personal interest stories, which appeal to people who say themselves, "I like sportsball, but I also want to cry like a middle-aged housewife watching an episode of Oprah about orphans." How many "he came from nothing to handle balls like a gay porn star" stories can you enjoy? Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at August 21, 2020 04:31 PM (H5knJ) 302

And hoo boy you should hear the Indians on the subject. Posted by: Azathoth at August 21, 2020 04:13 PM (7uV/n) I briefly did some housing market analysis that involved interviews with local realtors. Asian realtors would be completely open about their thoughts on certain neighborhoods. Illegal as hell, but funny. Anyone who thinks that the US is in any way the most racist country, or even in the top half of racist countries, is a fool. Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exil Friend of mine several years back was learning Mandarin Chinese, and had several 'conversation partners" with Chinese students, in which half the time was spent teaching the students English, and half the time was spent teaching my friend Chinese. Occasionally, she later reported, the subject of race came up during these teaching-conversations, and the level of (as we would define it) "racism" was so off the charts that the average American liberal's head would immediately explode. Without getting into specifics, the general attitude among newly arrived Chinese immigrants was that blacks were not actually human beings, but some sort of species of violent ape, and that going anywhere near them was practically suicidal. THe Chinese didn't see this as being "racist" at all -- just a completely understandable and reasonable fear of a wild predator. Posted by: zombie at August 21, 2020 04:32 PM (HEEq1) 311

Have not watched much NHL for years, but recall that only in the deep playoffs (almost as unseasonably ridiculously late as they are *this* special year) would there be enough cameras to cover the game properly. You need lots of cameras and a good director to show it well on TV.
In person of course you also lose the near-boards view, depending on your seats (or, if in either end, half the play is FAR away). This is where knowing the game comes in. You'll usually know what's about to happen/is happening in the blind spot based on everyone's position, direction, etc., and also what *should* happen next. After the NFL gave the Saints a Superbowl berth because of Katrina, it became apparent the NFL was completely rigged. Then, I started noticing a lot of players skating on felonies, felonies I'd still be in jail over, I gave up on the NFL entirely. I became a baseball aficionado, learning about the subtleties of the game, hating the Yankees, the usual things. Then, MLB went woke, which I tried to overlook, but, the Floyd tribute was a bridge too far. On top of that, the Floyd tribute took place after a good chunk of Minneapolis had burned down. So much for baseball. The NBA never really interested me. I'm happy to report my lack of interest never waned. I guess I'll just have to stick to the shooting sports and books, with woodworking projects and home repairs tossed in. I suspect I'll somehow manage.

Some whites females are sports fans, if they are conservative. Black males are sports fans, NBA and NFL. Hispanics like sports, but mostly soccer and NBA. Chinese, other than those in China, don't watch a lot of sports. They mainly count shit on abacuses and such. Muzzies will watch dudes on camels knock a stuffed goat bladder around in the dirt. Indians with a feather don't have televisions, and mainly smoke peace pipes and protest oil lines. fantastic, but leaving was heartbreaking because we drove through communities that the city had overtaken." A few years back I visited Chatanooga with my dad, a huge Civil War buff (the first one) and we were there to look up sites of the battle there. Missionary Ridge is fantastic, but I had read of a site called Orchard Knob, so tracked it down. It's only a few blocks from the zoo, in the middle of a rundown, ghettoized part of Chattanooga, but I found the sign and said, we gotta see this. It's about 3 or 4 acres, it's an elevated rocky knob that rises above the rest of the landscape there, and it's where the Federal Command post was during the battle because it had a commanding view of everything. You walk up the trail, out of the tawdriness of the city, and suddenly you step into this magnificent military park with statuary, cannon from the battle, an absolutely incredible spot. And then you have to walk back down into the dreariness of the present day. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 21, 2020 04:45 PM (Kpl3J) 398

Posted by: Defenestratus at August 21, 2020 04:49 PM (9V81o) Yep. Consider the Berlin Wall. Initially people climbed out of windows to jump into West Berlin. So the Reds bricked up the windows. Then people would throw a rope into West Berlin, where someone would catch it, and they'd zipline across. So the Reds banned sale of any rope that could hold a human. Then people escaped through the sewers. So the Reds cemented the sewers shut. Then some people escaped in a hot air balloon. So the Reds banned sale of any material that could be used to make a hot air balloon. Apparently the notion of making East Berlin a more desirable place to live never occurred to them. There is an argument here that at the most fundamental level professional sports are frivolous. Their lasting value that would justify their existence is their ability to provide common cultural touch points that are free of political divisions. With that end effectively gone, what is the moral case for keeping professional sports part of our society. Since they no longer serve their singular just purpose, are they not a simple immoral waste of the valuable God given time that a person has been gifted with.
Without the ability to transcend politics hasn't sports themselves become an immoral waste of time and resources? Posted by: mikethemoose at August 21, 2020 05:00 PM (Y6UV7) 491

I remember thinking, "He busted his ass to get out of that situation, why would he go back?" It wasn't everyone leaving, it was all of the productive people - the engineers, the professionals, the doctors, the people who ran the local shops, they were the ones who had the drive and desire to know they had to find a way out. Those who were staying were the elderly, the indigent, the mentally ill, those incapable of performing any work, the criminal class. They slapped up the wall to try and stop it. That's where NYC is going to be very, very soon. A city of several million indigent people, sick people, unemployable people, and a very large criminal class. no one else. I haven't watched the NBA for more than a few minutes at a time for decades. NCAA Basketball is more exciting. What's killing me though is MLB. i watched the first game of the season for the Detroit Tigers. When I saw a few of them take a knee and then i saw the BLM logo, I turned it off. I've been a baseball fan since the 1960's but I cannot stomach that shit. Between trips to Florida for Spring Training, merchandise, and regular season, I figure that's several thousand dollars they're no longer going to get. That may not be much in the big scheme of things but I just don't care anymore.

People aren't watching because:
They don't want their favorite sport/team politicized or pushing "social justice" on them. They're sick of this "pandemic", wearing the ridiculous mask, and social distancing. We want to actually attend a game, high five the guy next to us when our team scores a goal or hits a grand slam, and enjoy a hot dog and our favorite beverage. Posted by: Bill at August 21, 2020 08:04 PM (WouZn) 517
Are people put off by the awkward lack of crowds? Are they too focused on the pandemic and the upcoming presidential election? Do they not consider bubble tournaments "real" competitions?
All those things may be true. But TV ratings don't actually show that people have suddenly become less interested in sports. This is 100% true. My interest in sports is the same as it always was. I'm a sports nut and that is never going to change. But I do notice the one question not asked here: "Are people put off by the sports leagues aligning themselves with and promoting an anti-America, radical Marxist domestic terrorist group Black-Lives-Matter?" Hmmm, let's see... YES. *That* is why I have not tuned back in to watch sports since the restart. Plain and simple. I am still a massive sports fan. And I still would love to tune in again to watch the world's most elite athletes in each sport compete. But I 100% refuse to support anyone who literally bends the knee to support and promote anti-America, radical Marxist domestic terrorists. It's that fucking simple. And I will not go back to watching any of the leagues until they not only stop supporting terrorists, but put out a statement denouncing their previous support. Since that will likely never happen, I likely will never go back to watching American professional sports leagues again. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at August 21, 2020 08:32 PM (Do5/p) 518

One of the reasaons the useless Yahoo ceased comment sections. They once ran a majority of stewpidt fact bankrupt morons echoing the lies they're told to. The tide turned over the past 15 mos. And they
know it. For awhile they'd write some orange man bad hosreschidt that consisted of NOTHING more tha a series of Twats gleaned from Twatter - top to bottom inclusive. Thier chief marxist propagandists were two uselful idiots named Dylan Stableford and Mathew Bai who came to be known as Dylan Unstableford and Matty Clik Bait Bai Line who are probably still there. Yahoo by the way was bought by Verizon when it had been run by a spectacular incompetent sjw white whamin named Marissa Mayer who had run iinto the ground, yet collected massive sums in salary/bonuses for her "efforts". Verizon, for its part, has been ad continues to be one of the most leftist corporations on the SP. I know because I worked there after coming back having gone to ATT (now att) post divestiture ...and came back finding it too destroyed by a marxist ceo and board of directors - RABID leftists, raampant nepotism for a preponderance of incompetents 9most notably in in their HR dept. which actually resembled more of a division than a department drain of revenues. Verizon is rife with faggots, trannies, numale soy boys, angry leftist man hating shrikes, and more than a smattering of suspect tied muzzies.
