Awesome: Major League Soccer Players Booed for Taking a Knee For the Anthem

The poor dears said it was "disgraceful" for paying customers to express their views, and said it "pissed [them] off."

We'll see how they feel when their salaries get cut as paying fans abandon them.

FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon says players had requested for the anthem not be played, but that didn't happen. So players took the knee and the boos started. "You've got fans booing you for people taking a stand in what they believe in when millions of other people support this cause," Cannon said after the match via a Zoom press conference. "We've got fans booing us in our own stadium. How disgraceful is that. Honestly, for a lack of a better word, it pissed me off."

I'm so sorry, Princess, are you a bit heart-broke that not everyone called you a Stunning and Brave Heroine today?

Suck it up, bitch.

Meanwhile, NBA ratings are terrible, especially compared to... FoxNews ratings.

Nice try, Sweetie.

Degenerate Twitter Addict Mark Cuban decided to get involved because I guess he's so busy.

It's time to transform Get Woke Go Broke from a meme into movement.

It's time to bankrupt these people.

Scott Adams asked his twitter followers, how is your sports viewership now compared to what it had been?

I'd like to hear your answers.

I asked someone in my family what they would do - big Clemson fans. He still would have supported them I think. He said Clemson would never take a knee or disrespect the flag or anthem. I hope so.

What is truly sad about this is that sports was a great national pasttime.

You could go to a minor league, or national and have so much fun. Really get away from it all. Work, politics.

They betrayed us all. The hard left took over, like all institutions and wanted to destroy what Americans enjoyed. They have hated the NFL and NASCAR, for examples for a very long time. Now they have done what they wanted to, destroy it.

All sports are dictated out of China now.

I remember when some broke from Hollywood to create studios outside of LA. Redford was one. Sports should do the same. Start over. Break from the universities. Break from the city leagues.

They will come.

83 We should note that those guys needed to be booed just for being Major League Soccer Players.

Soccer exists for one reason - if you're in a third world shithole and you got a bunch of kids with nothing to do, and you can dig up one old scuffed up ball and dirt field no one's using, your problems are solved. That's why it doesn't matter if anyone scores, the point is to keep the running going on and on and on until all the kids drop from exhaustion, until the next day. And if you're lucky, they'll be so tired that they won't even complain about supper being a half cup of rice with the some chopped up rat mixed into it.

that's what soccer is for.

88 I still watch the NHL, and it's the only sport I watch now.

So far, the assholery in the NHL has been limited to one shit-head Canadian, Matt Dumba. I can live with that.

I haven't watched the NFL for years. I was a KC Chiefs fan for about 30 years, and named my daughter Delaney after the late Joe Delaney. Had she been a boy, I would have tried to get my wife to go along with first name Christian, middle name Okoye.

I sat there for decades watching one miserable losing season after another; then gave up on the league, not so much for the kneeling (although that really cemented it for me), but mainly because of the inconsistent officiating that seemed based more on players' reputations. It had become pro wrestling.

Then just a few years after I dropped it, the Chiefs (I hear) won the Superbowl. I didn't watch a single minute of it last year. And I don't miss it -- it's a shit game, with 3 seconds of action followed by 3 minutes of argument and replay.

90 Never have watched basketball, college or NBA; I was gone from football for twenty years and just came back to it the last four or five, and was enjoying it. But I am out now. Baseball has always been a passion but the way they have screwed things up I doubt I will be back for a long time. I am done with the SJW businesses to the extent possible. No more Proctor and Gamble, especially Gillette. No more Burger King. All major sports are out, and now college football - some of it is out.

For me it started with excluding Rush Limbaugh from NFL ownership.

I don't like Rush, generally. His "show" is one fucking nonstop ad, and his "takes" are anodyne and pedestrian. Not my cup of tea.

But when they kept him from buying something that was for sale, just because of his political beliefs, that tore it for me. Fuck them. They want a political sandbox, let them deal with McNeil/Lehrer level ratings.

92 I've been weening off sports for some time now. The NBA has never been a thing for me, I enjoyed bulls in the 90's as I'm a chicagoan but I was never a basketball fan. Basball I used to watch all the time but the past 5 years or so, nope. Football was always my bread and butter, Pro not college. But last couple years been doing more house projects than caring a lick what's going on on TV Sundays.

93 Husband dropped NFL Sunday when this crap started. I'm a baseball fan, and took great pleasure in calling and cancelling Extra Innings when I saw the Giants kneeling in pre-season. Repeated it in Spanish, just so the young lady understood perfectly. She answered me in Spanish that they were getting a lot of cancellations for the same reason.

I initially felt like the leagues in general were just playing to their future audiences, but Aubrey Huff claims he was not invited to the Giants' World Series anniversary event because of his support for Trump.

I think the majority of owners overall are all in for this shit.

Look how the NFL owner blocked Rush and Trump from ownership?

Can't believe I didn't notice it earlier.

It was a big fat Meh anyway. Kamala isn't exciting or interesting, half the pundits predicted it anyway, and it means nothing to the election. Mark Cuban acting like everyone rushed to Fox News to see about the VP pick is I guess understandable (he owns an NBA team) but pathetic and ludicrous.

95 PGA We will watch it when we aren't playing golf ourselves.

My husband watches anything with a ball and a score. Fantasy leagues for every sport. Two months ago he said to me that he was done. Done with what?? Done waiting around for sports to restart. So we joined the country club. We play a few times a week and are traveling now once a month to play gorgeous courses on the California coastline.

It sounds trivial but it is huge in my family of men. They will turn on the Angels to watch baseball and as someone said above the Astros to see who gets hit by a pitch. No extra sports packages on cable. No getting home to get the game on. No betting. No fantasy league.

I read elsewhere where a commentator made a good point, that sports actually adversely affected the mental health of the country.

Instead of doing things prior to when sports became mainstream, we now watch other people doing things. Really salient point and this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise by getting people to become more active and find more productive ways to spend their off times.

Check your portfolios, including your IRAs, 401ks, trading accounts, etc. If you own shares, show up to the shareholder meetings. DO NOT GIVE AWAY YOUR VOTE BY PROXY. Work to assemble a voting block of shareholders and use it to demand an end to subsidies for terrorists, divestment from markets where company (i.e. investor) assets are likely to be destroyed, and threaten to vote out the executive team if they will not agree. I disagree. Historically human beings need collective rituals to help unify communities. Sports fill that role, in much the same way the theater did for ancient Greeks. Going to a ball game is a way to be part of the larger community, as well as engage in catharsis. Further more, sports gave us heroes that were generally apolitical, and as such could be unifying figures in our national or regional identity.

136 Soccer exists for one reason - if you're in a third world shithole and you got a bunch of kids with nothing to do, and you can dig up one old scuffed up ball and dirt field no one's using, your problems are solved.

This.

Plus, it takes zero skill to play soccer. Sure, it takes skill to play it WELL, but not just to play it. Six year olds can have a blast running around kicking wildly in a huge scrum.

Contrast basketball, football, baseball or tennis. If you don't have some minimal level of skill, the game is no fun. If you can't shoot, can't throw a spiral accurately, can't hit a pitched ball or throw the ball accurately, can't serve accurately or return service, each of these sports is boring and frustrating.

I agree. Sports have been part of society forever. Try doing business in India when they have a multi-day cricket match against Pakistan or anywhere in Europe during the World Cup.

Sports will come back when they finally remember their proper role and it isn't politics. In fact, it's the opposite of politics.

It is another thing the flyover people do which they don't understand, therefore they don't approve and it is a waste of time and money which could be spent on their pet cause. So they invade it, and kill it from within. Once professional sports is dead the locusts will move on. What is next to make woke and destroy? Hunting, fishing, drinking beer, hobby carpentry?

Never really viewed anything but the Red Sox, and then only sporadically, but here's an observation:

In my local paper last week, the jack-sniffer scribbler wrote a column saying we should "thank" pro athletes for being on the field to play and entertain us, even during this time of health crisis and when there are no people in the stands.

I blasted him back in response, calling him out for supporting knee-dropping thugs, and apparently I am not the only one. He has been getting torched in letters and call-in comments.

169 Historically human beings need collective rituals to help unify communities. Sports fill that role, in much the same way the theater did for ancient Greeks.

I agree. Sports was a force of unification across all class, ethnic, and regional backgrounds for all Americans. Even bitter rivals like Sox/Yankees were both baseball fans and had a lot in common with that experience.

That's why the left is trying to destroy them. Infiltrate, corrupt, and destroy from within. Because it was something that was very American and something very constructive and unifying.

Until about 6 years ago, sports were super patriotic, rah-rah traditional American, too. One of the last bastions in the country you could reliably go to and get unabashed, unironic love of your home.

That has to go, in order for them to maintain control. They need us at each others' throats, divided and angry at each other, rather than them.

Took 3 weeks to stop missing it. After that, I couldn't believe how fast I no longer cared at all. After watching something like 40 superbowls in a row starting with Hank Stram's Chiefs beating the Vikings, I didn't care about superbowls either.

231 10 years ago, I listened to ESPN radio as my default in both vehicles. I watched ESPN on TV more than probably any other channel. I subscribed to NFL Sunday ticket and the NFL Channel. I watched college football on Saturdays and at least 3 NFL games on Sundays. I watched nearly every Monday and Thursday Night NFL games.

Now? I couldn't tell you where ESPN Radio can be found on my radio dial. I can't recall the last time I watched a single minute of ESPN TV. I no longer subscribe to Sunday Ticket or the NFL Channel. I actively avoid all sports where the participants kneel for the same flag that we cover our war dead with.

234 I cooled a lot on the NFL when they went through that phase of taking trash and doing the love dance from Zulu whenever they scored. I cannot abide shitty sportsmanship, it's too ghetto for me as well. I didn't like the thug component of the NFL, half of which seemed to be felons.

But the kneeling thing finally tore it entirely.

All of the above. Plus insufferable commercial breaks (more frequent, longer). By the time I quit, they were actually prioritizing the commercials over the game, so that you'd come back from commercial break and see that you'd missed plays. Making the Super Bowl into a gay party-event with for non-fans. On and on.

Instead of doing things prior to when sports became mainstream, we now watch other people doing things. Really salient point and this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise by getting people to become more active and find more productive ways to spend their off times.

I've always liked playing sports, and played everything. Watching them, not so much. I kind of enjoyed watching MLB, but didn't particularly follow any given team. I enjoyed studying the players' biomechanics: how do they run, how do they swing, how do they throw? But then, I enjoy watching the Little League World Series for the same reason. In fact, the latter is more instructive because the kids evince more flaws, which underscores the difference between perfect and not so perfect biomechanics.

They want that good good Chinese foreign student tuition money, so they can offer free tuition to Miguel and Lupe, Tyrone and Lakeisha.

They actively avoid admitting the children of white California taxpayers, because there's no upside for them: they're not minorities - so no virtue gets signaled - and they're paying top dollar, because they get in-state tuition.

Now if Trump just kicks Chinese student admissions in the balls - Donald, I hope you read this - then UC is in some very deep financial kimchee.

Look at my nic, I took a while to come up with it a few years ago when I first read AoS and dared to comment.

Hmm.

AoS is a national blog, based in NY. I'm in the Seattle area. The Left Coast. Heh. Nailed the geography.

Now, what about me?

Hmm.

As a man of graying hair, what there is left of it, what do I like, and has been consistent all my life? Anything outdoors in WA state and the PacNW, hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, camping, swimming. All would be appropriate.

LeftCoast boater? LeftCoast hunter? Nah, nothing worked. But one thing stayed in my mind.

University of Washington football. Listening to it on radio as a 11 year old, being with Dad on Saturday afternoons while he did chores and errands in the Fall. And then, attending the Montlake campus. And where most of my best friends, to this day, were met.

LeftCoast Dawg! That's perfect! That's ME!

I believe that their old coach, Chris Peterson, was a great leader of men, but got burned out. The new coach, Jimmy Lake, is a great teacher of not only football but to show young impressionable teens to become responsible citizens. But I will no longer be following the team. Or being a rabid fan of any sport. Especially pro sports.

Why? Simple.

I don't need to be lectured by a bunch of 20 somethings who have been pampered like no other group of unrelated people in civilized history, that I am an evil racist person. I won't be lectured by idiots who do not know history AT ALL. They focus on a few facts and a lot of falsehoods to quote anti-American writers and false data they use for their specious arguments.

I don't need to pay $100++ an afternoon, plus that much again or more on food and transportation, to be lectured to about anything. Especially things that are NOT true. ABOUT ME and the people I associate with.

I have greatly enjoyed watching organized sports as a temporary diversion to forget about all the BS in my life.

Yours is probably worse, mine includes the Fail on that big test, the mundane 50 hour entry-level jobs, finding out your girlfriend is cheating, finding out that noise under the hood will cost thousands to fix, and all that kind of nonsense.

No longer. And it wasn't me, it was those pampered tools and their servants like Mr. $50 million a year Roger Goodell that insisted to take my few hours of diversion away from me.

I was willing to continue to pay really good money to enjoy the diversions. No more.

For me, there is always hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, camping, swimming. And cribbage and poker, if I can find others who want to join me. And now, commenting on AoS.

If I feel this way, others do to. Organized sports on any level is bankrupted. Those that brought it on are yet to figure that out.

483 My view on sports? Wasn't much into watching them to begin with, but now? Go die in a fire, IDGAF. You want to be heard, but, not to hear? Hear this: you're a bunch of arrogantly prideful rich bastards who think that, because you have a larger and louder platform, it's ok to talk down to people and that your opinions matter more than ours. Be glad you weren't born to your neighbor. You might be a broke ass cripple. But now? Now you think that because you got a lucky roll of the cosmic dice you get to tell us how to live, what to believe, and more? If it weren't a crime, I know a lot of people who'd be perfectly fine dragging your ass down a coal mine and making you spend a day digging that shit out of the ground, then beating you senseless both because you deserve it, and so you understand what it's like to do that every day. I'd take a coal miner over you any day. You're functionally worthless outside your ability to play a game. You're a vicarious success story and nothing more than a modern day gladiator. The moment our time is better spent doing something else is the moment you'd better learn to code.

That is, if you have enough brain cells left.

You contribute nothing more than a palliative and an escape from the frustrations and weariness of everyday life. And, you don't seem to understand that. So you've decided, now, to become part of our everyday frustrations and weariness and you bitch about not being heard or allowed to excess your opinions? No, dipshit, we do hear you. You are getting to express your opinions. But, we believe you're wrong. Some of us both know it, and, can prove it.

You haven't earned that respect. You've earned nothing but our envy as we watch you do what we wish we could. Now you've stepped out of bounds, and this is your penalty. You've made your bed, now lie in it and know that, as your world burns around you, you set the fire. Not us. You were warned and refused to listen. Now reap your reward.

I should have been waiting in high anticipation for the resumption of the season.

It's actually shocking to me to how I feel about the Celtics. They disgust me.

I cannot root for a human being who wears BLM on the back of his jersey. It's not a matter of principle me, it's visceral: I can't take any joy in that person's success.

I no longer relate to the team or anyone on it and, let's face it, without the emotional intimacy a fan feels for his team, that intimacy that leads him to speak of it with second person plural pronouns, then the enterprise reduces to a trivial game.

A documentary called "Fastball."

Ryan was the first guy recorded on a radar gun to top 100 MPH.

The conclusion they came to, based on various types of analysis, is that Bob Feller was the fastest ever. With Walter Johnson right on his heels.

Probably hard to know for sure.

What we do know though, the modern guns are recording TOP speed after it leaves the pitcher's hand, so when they show everyone in the upper 90s, and some guys hitting 100 or more regularly, they're really not throwing harder than guys in the past.

Instruction should be like SAT or bar review course, i.e., preparation for the assessment phase, which takes place separately, somewhere else. They're just there to get you ready for the Big Day. No reason that that can't be online.

Some other outfit (such as ETS does with the SAT) administers the exams, grades them, and provides certification for those who passed.

Something like this. I'm still thinking it through.

CAT nails what is going on. The Left doesn't care about sports, only spreading misery to as many Americans as possible.

Now ask yourself, why would people do this? And where does it lead?

I will now self-censor.

I had the Wolverines visit to Montlake, which would have happened next month, circled on the calendar for over a year now. I had a boat ride already lined up and a couple of spots open for the best friends. Taking a powerboat to a Husky game is a fantastic, 10 to 16 hour experience. And not cheap.

UW - Michigan is a great rivalry. Since the 1978 Rose Bowl. Or for me anyway, was a great rivalry.

I'm not angry, rather sad.

519 I lost interest in football when half of the players were kneeling, and the owners and the league expressed their support.

At the time, it wasn't that long ago that they'd all tut-tutted about Tim Tebow taking a knee in prayer, and forbidden the Cowboys from putting a little sticker on their helmets in honor of some murdered Dallas police officers because, "That's, like, a divisive political message and stuff, and we're not about that sort of thing..."

Well! How things change when said "divisive" message is coming from the other side.

And now that this has basically spread to every athlete in every team sport, screw them all.

There's been a holdout or two recently, like Drew Brees or that guy from the Orlando Magic, but they either "accidentally" suffer season-ending injuries once the game starts or find themselves "cancelled" on social media (resulting in much grovelling and wailing and gnashing of teeth).

It especially irks me to see this bullshit in hockey, where they play two national anthems before every game, so you get to see the players kneel for America's anthem and then stand respectfully for Canada's.

Every last one of them can eat a balls.

523 I have been a rabid professional Chicago sports fan since I was 7 years old.

'83 Winnin' Ugly White Sox were my introduction to professional sports by my uncle. He also taught me to play baseball (my first love) and I joined Little League that next summer at age 8.

'84 was the year the Cubs were supposed to go to the World Series. Mom and grandma were die-hard Cubs fans and made me a fan. First sports idol was Ryne Sandberg. Wanted to be him, as I played 2B in Little League. Then the heartbreak of the blown 2-0 NLCS series lead to the Padres. 1 win away from the World Series. Fucking Steve Garvey...

'85 (age 9) is a year no native Chicagoan will ever forget. '85 Bears. The start of my die-hard Bears fandom.

'86-'87 (age 10-11) was the return of Michael Jordan after losing his previous season to an ankle injury. The beginning of the legend and the beginning of my die-hard Bulls fandom.

'91-'93 (ages 15-17) the years of the first Bulls Three-Peat.

'94-'99 (ages 18-23) attend Purdue University and immediately become immersed in college football and basketball. Basketball are perennial contenders under Gene Keady, football team sucks until hiring Joe Tiller who immediately turns program around in first season in 1997. Drew Brees arrives on scene in 1998.

'96-'98 (ages 20-22) the years of the second Bulls Three-Peat.

'99 (age 23) move to Detroit for first job out of college. Introduced to professional hockey for the first time as everyone I know is a rabid Red Wings fan. It would take me another 4 years, however, before I would embrace and fall in love with the game of hockey.

2002 (age 26) first discover and start my rabid obsession with fantasy sports. Fantasy baseball and fantasy football. Over the next 18 years, I would play in at least 5 leagues every season in every possible fantasy sport. Obsessed with sports and the strategy and stats of all of it.

2003 (age 27) saw my first hockey game live after seeing plenty on TV, since Detroit airs Red Wings games (Chicago owner had blacked out the games in Chicago for decades to force people to buy tickets to see team play. So I had never gotten into NHL). Immediately fell in love with the game.

2005 (age 29) Ozzie Guillen-led White Sox win World Series.

2006 (age 30) Bears go to Super Bowl again.

2010 (age 34) spend $400 on ticket and road trip it to Philly with brother and cousin to watch Blackhawks win The Cup.

2013 (age 37) spend $800 on ticket and road trip it to Boston with brother and mom to watch Blackhawks win The Cup.

2015 (age 39) Blackhawks win third Cup in 6 seasons. I see my first Blackhawks regular season home game at United Center with family and experience the Jim Cornelison national anthem. Amazing.

2016 (age 40) The Cubs break the curse and win the World Series. Can't describe the feeling of being able to share that experience with my family and all of us immediately thinking of my grandma, who passed away a few years earlier and missed out on seeing it finally happen. But we knew she must be partying in heaven.

And that's just the Chicago- and college-related sports stuff for me. I could go on and on about how my entire life prior to 2020 revolved around sports. Watching it, die-hard fan of Chicago teams, playing it (baseball, softball, walleyball, volleyball, rollerblading, bowling).

NFL Network, NFL RedZone, MLB Network, NHL Network, ESPN channels before they went full-SJW. Saturdays full of college football, Sundays full of NFL Football.

All of that is now ruined.

I'm done.

When each sports league, every athlete, every coach, bent the knee to Marxist Black Lives Matter... that was it for me.

I gave up the NBA somewhere between 10-15 years ago after they went full thug hip-hop culture and quality of play went to shit (no defense, all one-on-one hot-dogging). And I gave up ESPN sometime during the Obama years when they went full-SJW.

But everything else, I was still following religiously.

No longer. The disgusting display of pushing the "stay home" and "mask up!" narratives and then the unforgiveable bending the knee to Marxist Black Lives Matter. That was it.

I have not watched anything related to sports since March. Maybe I have just finally grown out of it. I dunno.

But it has been a shock to my system to go from my entire life revolving around sports to now... nothing.

But that Black Lives Matter shit was a punch to the gut. Basically like finding out your significant other is cheating on you. Or finding out your best friend has betrayed you. Trust is completely destroyed. I can never look at any of those athletes or coaches or sports journalists the same.

This was not just a difference of political opinion. This was outright celebration and promotion of anti-American domestic terrorist organization.

There's no coming back from that in my eyes.

526 "We've got fans booing us in our own stadium. How disgraceful is that. Honestly, for a lack of a better word, it pissed me off."

The disgraceful part is doing something so disrespectful that "fans" would boo you. The thing about fans is that they admire something about you. The reason people with fans should keep their opinions to themselves (besides that their opinions are ill informed) is if the things your fans dislike about you exceed the things they like, they're not going to be fans anymore and will chear when you fall.

Mr. Popovich therefore is a VERY evil man, and his team? Well, they decided that I, the paying customer, doesn't matter because the ONLY lives that matter are those with certain skin pigmentation.

So there goes the NFL and NBA.

My son was discussing Nolan Ryan with me. He said that Nolan's final pitch of his career at age 46 was 98 mph.

Also said that some science show analyzed video from his younger
days, and they figured his fastest pitch was 108 mph. He was a beast.

Posted by: Backup Slider at August 13, 2020 04:59 PM (amQo5)

A documentary called "Fastball."

Ryan was the first guy recorded on a radar gun to top 100 MPH.

The conclusion they came to, based on various types of analysis, is
that Bob Feller was the fastest ever. With Walter Johnson right on his
heels.

Probably hard to know for sure.

What we do know though, the modern guns are recording TOP speed
after it leaves the pitcher's hand, so when they show everyone in the
upper 90s, and some guys hitting 100 or more regularly, they're really
not throwing harder than guys in the past.

539 Major-league sportball teams/leagues have been wildly successful over the past several decades for one reason...

The fans get to feel like they're a part of something big when their teams win. When your feetball team wins the Sooper Bowl, you get to say, "Yeah! We won! We're the champions!"

What the big sportball leagues have done by so thoroughly embracing BLM is, they've told those fans, "If you love this country, you are not a part of this. You're not a part of us. We are not together in this."

When you basically tell a majority of your fanbase to go suck a fat one, yeah, you're gonna take a bit of a financial hit. You're gonna lose a big chunk of that fanbase.

The other is a game where defense no longer exists and its jyst an ego stroker to see which whiney bitch can score the most points to the detriment of his team.

I use to watch hockey, but my team has been crap the last decade, so after the first 2 weeks of the season i give up.

This year i didn't watch baseball during the time they bowed to the mob and plastered hate speech on the field and bases. Recently I've watched it a little.

The only sport i tend to watch consistently, when it's on, is MMA. They've pretty much stayed out of this bs, they were the first to push to end these extreme lockdowns and in general the sport lacks the sandy vaginas that have become so prominent.

556 Professional sports have major structural problems that are going to prevent a lot of people from coming back once the BLM furor has passed. First off, they have become a tedious extension of social media. The NFL is the absolute worst when it comes to this. Part of what made the great players of yesteryear almost mythical is that we didn't know about their every bowel movement or petty feud. Second, these sports are fucking themselves with the analytics. Basketball is a total joke and Baseball is not far behind. Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan would now be limited to 6 inning starts in today's MLB. And don't get me started on what a fucking disaster bullpen games have been.
