Trump Announces "Historic Peace Agreement" Between Israel and the United Arab Emirates; Agreement Includes Full Normalization of Relations

This puts a bullet in the head of the Arab embargo against Israel. Sure, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have been cooperating (a lot!) with Israel for years, but that was covert. An open secret, to be sure, but not acknowledged officially.

With this peace agreement, the UAE officially recognizes Israel and promises to "fully normalize" all relations -- including economic relations. Including direct flights to Israel.

Good news.

President Trump on Thursday announced what he called a "Historic Peace Agreement" between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, saying they agreed to "full normalization of relations."

"HUGE breakthrough today! Historic Peace Agreement between our two GREAT friends, Israel and the United Arab Emirates!" Trump tweeted Thursday morning.

The president, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed released a joint statement Thursday, after the three spoke "and agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates." The statement said that the "diplomatic breakthrough" was at "the request of President Trump," and that Israel will "suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President's Vision for Peace and focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world."

...

Delegations from Israel and the UAE are expected to meet in the coming weeks to "sign bilateral agreements regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications, technology, energy, healthcare, culture, the environment, the establishment of reciprocal embassies, and other areas of mutual benefit."

Trump made a statement about it from the Oval Office at 11:30.

We can write trade accords with individual countries.

Screw multilateralism. Pursue bilateralism in as many places as you need to. If it works, the rest will follow suit. If it doesn't, you've minimized the harm.

The Times of Israel had an interesting article - Saudi Arabia is looking at uranium enrichment to give themselves a nuclear weapons capacity to offset Iran.

Israel is not happy with this, but has limited options - they don't want to upset their growing defacto alliance with Saudi Arabia, and public opposition would likely accomplish nothing anyway.

In any case, Saudi Arabia financed most of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program - rumor has it that they are promised a share of the output, should they ever need it.

The great irony is that it's true, after a fashion. The big Iran Deal that Obama made scared the hell out of both the Israeli's and the Gulf States. They realized that they had to find a way to work together for their joint survival against Iran, and that layed the groundwork for everything happening today.

To put this deal another way - both the UAE and the Saudi's have realized that, if it comes to war with Iran, Israel will be a far more reliable ally than the US will. US elections are far too risky.

I had one of those. Was a business trip with one person from each of our major offices. Five people, five nights, one person per night picked dinner. Our Indian guy asked around and found what was the best Indian restaurant according to all of the Indian expats he talked to. We went. He asked us some questions on the way - like "do you like spicy food" and "how adventurous do you feel?" We all agreed that we liked spicy food and were not picky.

When we got to the restaurant, he collected all of the menus, had a lengthy conversation with the waiter, and told us to just wait. I have no idea what most of what I ate was, and had never had it before or since. But it was an astoundingly great meal.

303 I had one of those.

My son, an aeronautical engineer stationed in Heidelberg met us with his wife last summer in London for a 2 week UK tour. (London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow). What we found was that from a culinary standpoint the UK is still stuck in the last century. Think Haggis, Blood Sausage, White Pudding (aka FAT sausage). Their famous Beans with Breakfast was an opened can of Van Camp's Pork and Beans, served cold. Despite their proximity to France they learned NOTHING. They couldn't even get bacon right. Having said that, the ONE culinary experience throughout the UK that was a bright spot was the Indian Restaurants. Run by Indians, like Jewish Deli's, they cook their OWN food and allow the public to buy and experience. They were consistently AMAZING.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at August 13, 2020 12:37 PM (s2VJv)

To be a bit more serious, I disagree. What the average person thinks in the UAE (or the KSA) doesn't mean shit, it never has, it never will. These aren't democracies, these are combination Monarchy-Oligarchy systems. Therefore a few men (and ONLY men) at the top control every important decision in those societies - it always has been that way, it always will be that way. It's the only thing that can give them any semblance of stability.

On a personal level, Muslims will always hate Jews. That will never, ever change, and it's foolish to even think such a thing could ever happen. It's a fundamental part of Islam itself, and it always will be.

So, what is the best that can be hoped for? What should a nation like Israel strive for? A realistic goal is that a Deal should be cut between Israel and the Arab Rulers for a military alliance against the REAL enemy, the one that is building missiles and trying to create nuclear weapons to aim at both of them. After that, it's just like living next to neighbors you don't really like; you don't go out to eat with each other, but you can have a deal to not start shooting at each other and to respect each others fencelines, and to not pay people to go take a dump on each other's front yards.

I think Israel gets all of that and more out of this agreement.

The new thing I've seen around here is the positivity rate, the number of positive cases per people tested. It's running at about 15% and were told we have to get it down to five.

During her run for state legislature in 2002, Gabbard told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Working with my father, Mike Gabbard, and others to pass a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage, I learned that real leaders are willing to make personal sacrifices for the common good. I will bring that attitude of public service to the legislature. The quote, which CNN's KFile found during a review of Gabbard's early career, shows how closely she aligned herself with her father's mission at the time. Gabbard's father ran The Alliance for Traditional Marriage, a political action committee aimed at opposing pro-gay lawmakers and legislation

When I tout the superiority of NYC or the Northeast I give you permission to wish that I am my family died in a nuclear blast that miraculously only affects N.J. and N.J./s
The only thing I've said is that N.J. is not all like a view from Newark airport- which is true. You have never heard me make any disparaging comments about any other large geographic area except that I will say "Chicago is a dump right now" as is much of San Francisco as is Camden, N.J.

Lifelong NJ resident--I totally agree.
But Murphy and the Democrats are racing to ruin it--and combined with the rapid decline of NYC, the future doesn't look bright--although fleeing rich residents of NYC are now making nice areas of the state--Rumson, a few other places--even more expensive

So the real estate market is going to be good in NJ
