What is being suggested is that the smear campaign "worked" in that Trump fired Berman. But that's fucking stupid: Two weeks after Berman's firing, Maxwell was charged. For example, if you are accused of something (credibly) and you leak other accusations which are easily proven wrong. It makes all the evidence look suspect.
This would be an example as well - leaking information to make it look like the guy who was protecting her was NOT protecting her. It just confuses things and introduces doubt about who to believe.
I think it is very common method to discredit opposition groups against a regime - they introduce provocateurs to make their opposition look bad. Or moles who are unsavory and get the public against the whole group.
It is like a modified limited hangout, but instead of releasing a partial truth (while hiding the bulk of it,) you release BS (still hiding the real truth.)
There has to be a term for it. If not, I am taking applications.

For example, if you are accused of something (credibly) and you leak other accusations which are easily proven wrong. It makes all the evidence look suspect.
This would be an example as well - leaking information to make it look like the guy who was protecting her was NOT protecting her. It just confuses things and introduces doubt about who to believe.
I think it is very common method to discredit opposition groups against a regime - they introduce provocateurs to make their opposition look bad. Or moles who are unsavory and get the public against the whole group.
It is like a modified limited hangout, but instead of releasing a partial truth (while hiding the bulk of it,) you release BS (still hiding the real truth.)
There has to be a term for it. If not, I am taking applications.

An actor is a performer. They are paid to preform roles that are written for them or do plays from long ago. Do I think the guy paid to play Sir Thomas More in "A Man For all Seasons" actually was lying in trying to convince people he was Sir Thomas More?. He knew he wasn't Sir Thomas More and so did they.Nobody was fooled. They just enjoyed his performance. I wouldn't compare actors to actual liars who aren't actors, but who are trying to fool people for personal benefit.
