Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | BBC Head of Standards: Our Stupid, Weak-Willed Nasty Bully "Journalists" Have Become Addicted to Twitter, a "Toxic" Site Which Is Increasing Journalists' Pre-Existing Toxicity and Mental IllnessI added a little to the headline, but it's mostly as it appeared in the original and it's all true besides. BBC journalists addicted to 'toxic' Twitter, says boss Some BBC journalists have become addicted to Twitter, the corporation's head of standards has admitted as he warned that staff must be careful about how they use the "toxic" platform. The broadcaster has commissioned a review of how reporters and programmes use social media amid fears that the desire to "go viral" is undermining its reputation for impartiality and accuracy. David Jordan, the BBC's director of editorial policy and standards, disclosed that some staff had already been disciplined for "egregious" violations of social media guidelines. Corporation journalists had been seduced by the instant gratification of social media, he said, posing risks to the BBC brand as the tone of debate on such platforms sours.More: Mr Jordan believes that social media websites can be 'toxic' and amid a desire to go viral which could overshadow an editorial necessity for impartiality and accuracy. He added: 'The way social media has developed in recent times, particularly Twitter, has become adversarial, more argumentative, more combative, more polarised and sometimes toxic. 'It can suck people in, the immediacy of it can be alluring, the live dynamics of it can be seductive to some people.'Plus, lol: The corporation is also set to announce 100 more job losses in the news department in a bid to make savings.Awww, sad! Two things on this topic today:
I did my annual IT security training today, and there was a video where a creepy-looking guy accosts another dude in the bathroom and proceeds to chat cheerily with him about the promotion he (the other dude) just got, his wife's zumba class, their upcoming trip to Mexico, his kid's pictures from the concert he just went to, etc. - all of which he'd learned on social media. I loved it because that kind of crap is exactly why my husband and I do NOT share every little detail of our lives on social media! The other is that a coworker, who I suspect is conservative, and I were discussing the difficulty of making an argument to the public about the value of our work, and we agreed that if you can't put it in an infographic or 140 characters, you can't get across to most people. Social media is literally reprogramming people's brains. The best cure, in my opinion, is long form reading. Posted by: Mrs. Peel at July 17, 2020 06:57 PM (rWZ8Y) 90

With Twitter and #CancelCulture, an account with daily journal posting is tantamount to being prematurely retired, or, if not employed, unemployable.
The two cannot coexist. You're making confessions not to a priest but to an executioner. Anything that might stray from any orthodoxy, however benign, is going to get you harassed and worse. Posted by: artemis at July 17, 2020 07:18 PM (AwPyG) That's true, but when someone sees your title as a, oh, New York Times reporter, They think its a vetted story. Its not. Same with the BBC. And then it gets worse, because of the incestuous nature of Journalism, they will retweet something not true, as 'from reported by this BBC reporter', and THEN Law enforcement suddenly takes the original lie serioiusly. Like the Steele Document. FBI knew it was bunk, but the FBI leaked it to the Press, who did not want to touch it either. But the Press was able to say anonymous inside sources, and then the FBI USED it for warrants, because it had supposedly been 'in the news'. The founders of a lot of colleges and universities would be turning over in their graves so much so the earth would fall off of its axis if they knew what the schools had become. Oberlin was founded in 1833 by a Presbyterian minister and a missionary who were concerned about the lack of Christian morals amongst settlers in the West-and THIS is what it has become-so woke it never goes to sleep and has been exhibiting characteristics of major mental illness and breakdown for years.

In all seriousness, limes are a complete mystery fruit whose origins are unknown.
Every other citrus has had its genetics mapped out, and its evolutionary tree carefully charted. We know where they came from, what their parents were, and what attribute of citruseness they brought to the citrus family. But not limes. We know they're different from lemons and citrons, but we don't know how or why. Or when. The "foundational" citruses are mandarins (i.e. tangerines) pomelos citrons kumquats Each brought a different aspect to the concept of "citrus" -- mandarins brought sweet flesh, citrons brought sour flesh, pomelos brought bitterness, and kumquats brought sweet peels. Everything else is a descendant of those four. Oranges are a natural cross between mandarins and pomelos. Lemons are a cross between citrons and pomelos. Calamondins are a cross between kumquats and mandarins. Etc. And then there are second-generation crosses: grapefruits are a cross between pomelos and oranges (and thus are .75 pomelo and .25 mandarin). But somehow limes never fit in the equations. We know they're different from lemons, but we can't figure out what characterizes "lime-ness" as opposed to "lemon-ness." It's more complicated than that, but if you're into the origins of food, it's actually quite interesting. Posted by: zombie at July 17, 2020 07:45 PM (HEEq1) 310

I missed the thread below about the mangy douche that crashed his mom's van into the church. I have no info about this particular incident but I do know the church. I have moved a few instruments in and out of there.
Queen of Peace is out among the retirement communities on SR200. It is pretty big. It has been a few years since I have been over there but every time I was, there was always someone arguing. I used to call it "Our Lady of Discord". Behind the altar are (or were) paintings of different scenes from the Bible. The stand outs were Ezekiel and the wheels within wheels that looks like a scene from Close Encounters in pastel -there is even a mesa in the background that looks like Devil's Tower. And then there is Abraham and Isaac. It is the usual Isaac laid out and Abraham holding the knife and the angel staying his hand portrayal. The thing is Abraham looks just like Tim Allen in The Santa Clause. It is possible the little maggot is just a misguided art critic.
