Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Glorious: "A Handy Guide to Writing a NeverTrumper Column"With so many people stuck at home these days, many are contemplating dipping their toes into the world of professional writing. While it’s true that many journalists have been losing their jobs or taking pay cuts, especially in the time of virus, some niche areas are still booming. Provided you have the correct prerequisites, writing the NeverTrump column could be a quick and easy way to write essays for fun and profit. Aside from the fact that important daily newspapers and blogs around the country run the NeverTrump column every day, making it a target rich environment, it has another advantage. You only have to write it once. After that you just move a few words around, replace Russia with Ukraine, emoluments for tax fraud, whatever really. You could probably even set up a template and a thesaurus algorithm and make the whole enterprise as quick as pushing one button. The next part is of course, "2. I Had to Make a Heroic Stand." Quick word on that: NeverTrumpers are always congratulating themselves on their alleged "courage" for betraying a disfavored and in fact frequently hated political minority to join the liberal media-government consensus that has near 100% hegemony over our entire culture and billions of dollars in funding from leftwing foundations and almost all big corporations and which has lots of contributorships and fellowships to hand out because they control the media and the think tanks. This is like members of the French Resistance deciding they don't like the nasty tactics the group is using against the Nazis, and then joining the Nazis and hunting down their former comrades, and then congratulating themselves on how brave they were to defect from a tiny harried underground movement to join a nigh-unstoppable army that controls the entire country. In fact, NeverTrump is exactly like that. "Oh look at us, we're so brave to have given up sleeping in the sewers and scrounging food to living in palaces seized by the Nazis and granted to us as a reward for changing sides. Aren't we just the absolute tops in moral perfection. Here, let me sermonize to you about how Jesus would have joined the Nazis." Anyway, do read that article. Really good. Update:

should they include the part where they enjoy watching from the closet, as other (real) men have sex with their wives? That might show the liberals how open they are to changing the old fashioned sex/marriage roles, but might betray their claims to be "a true conservative".

By all that I've seen. Every investment partner Trump has would be pressured to drop him or face consequences. Other investments would be ruined any way that the drones could. REMEMBER: The NeverTrump "movement" was so named in order to project to the masses that Trump was never going to get anywhere, not even the nomination, without their amazing support.
Certain events have since shifted it to de facto meaning these people as individuals will "never support Trump", which means less than nothing to anyone because honestly who gives a fuck. I would suggest that by keeping the moniker they have done a decent job in making people forget the original meaning and purpose - and how feckless that makes them. Change my mind. In fact, NeverTrump is exactly like that. ++++++++++++ I disagree on this one. It's worse. Continuing your analogy, NT are members of the French Resistance who clandestinely hand over their comrades to the Nazi interrogators, swear up and down to the group that they don't how Jacques got picked up, and then starts in on trying to convince everyone that Jacques is fine and that while the Nazis are of course bad, aren't the actions of the Resistance also baiting them into over-reaction? 45s While I applaud my Senate colleague Lindsay Graham's commitment to public service, I will not support his decision to call former President Obama to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding Russian involvement in the 2016 election. Aside from the fact that there is an abundant amount of evidence proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Kremlin did indeed interfere in our election, it is simply unseemly to call former Chief Executive to the witness stand, and sets a bad precedent, overturning nearly 250 years of our tradition of a peaceful turning over of power. As I mentioned last thread, I went to my doc this afternoon (needed refills), my regular GP. He wasn't wearing a mask and shook my hand. He's you know, like an M.D. with a degree and everything, internal medicine even, before he opened his private practice her. So from this, I think I can draw some conclusions on the relative effectiveness and necessity for wearing masks. After it was over, he grabbed some hand sanitizer, said give me your hands and slathered both our hands up. Posted by: shibumi, living in CV1984 at May 14, 2020 04:32 PM (ZCiJZ) ++++++++ Some of them probably are. Someone - I don't remember who - once described the various kinds of conservatives. One group he called out were the "debate club conservatives." This is what most of the Republicans in congress (the serious ones, anyway) are. It is in fact what I am. These are the guys who read policy positions and would just love to talk to you about the Laffer Curve and engage in a hearty back-and-forth on trade policy. I dig it. I like it. I would love to be able to do it. But now is not the time for Debate Club Conservatives. Now is the time for brass knuckles. You cannot have a policy disagreement unless you agree on fundamental basic items - like sovereignty, rights, borders, role of man vs. state, etc. Without that fundamental agreement on the terms of the game, debating policy is pointless and will only result in you losing. Right now, there is no basic agreement between the two sides. As a result, policy is by necessity a back-burner item. There is no room for Debate Club Conservatives right now. There is really only room for pit bulls and killers. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 14, 2020 04:42 PM (hYcqw) Posted by: David French at May 14, 2020 04:42 PM (WdocV) 221

If Trump had actually violated the emoluments clause, then it is up to Congress to impeach him. The courts, in his opinion, have no standing in determining guilt or innocence. The emoluments clause is a political clause and has a political remedy, not a judicial one. He also asked that if Trump were somehow found guilty, what is the remedy? Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 14, 2020 04:33 PM (hYcqw) The greatest evils in history were done "for the greater good". The flaw in it is the assumption of omniscience, that you (or some group you approve of) can truly know what is best for everyone and make those decisions for them better than they can. History is replete with examples that prove the ability to pull this off simply doesn't exist. +++++++++++ Yes. There is of course a "common good" but depending on your bent, it can be anything from "Maximize the man and minimize the state" to "impose top-down control over everyone and everything for the maximally-good outcome as I see it." It can run the gamut for utopian anarchy to totalitarianism. Which is why, if you lead off with the "common good," I have no patience with the argument. It is wildly subjectively and usually channeled by communists. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 14, 2020 04:45 PM (hYcqw) 244

Not just Tinseltown. ALL live entertainment, from concerts and festivals to bands in bars and all kinds of theater-- both professional and amateur-- are dead, as are conventions. Yes. There is of course a "common good" but
depending on your bent, it can be anything from "Maximize the man and minimize the state" to "impose top-down control over everyone and everything for the maximally-good outcome as I see it." It can run the gamut for utopian anarchy to totalitarianism. Which is why, if you lead off with the "common good," I have no patience with the argument. It is wildly subjectively and usually channeled by communists. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 14, 2020 04:45 PM (hYcqw) --- Rhetorically, it's a lot stronger than what the Corporate Conservatives have asked us to defend for the last quarter century. Here are some significant things that are similar between never trump and liberals.
Liberals are going to tolerate a "moderate" like Biden, who dropped his two most long-standing conservative positions when he hit flack this year. Joe has moved left. "Conservative" NT are going to vote for Biden, despite that he dropped his two most long-standing conservative positions this year and added AOC to his potential administration. However, Liberals spend A LOT of their time claiming that you can only think their way. NTs tolerate the liberal way of thinking, but spend a lot of the time telling you that you can only think their way and call you a conservative. They both agree on "what's nuts". Nuts is anything outside of what liberals insist you believe, but the NTs will take anything that falls outside of liberalism that they believe. But they both have a severe annoyance at you thinking differently. For both, thinking differently from them POSES a threat to the country, society, everybody else, granny (even though Killmo provides a BIGGER threat). And this is what I figured out today. Both are self-flattering. This is why journalists like to consider themselves almost in someway "firefighters". Firefighters get credit that they don't. So they covet that credit and those attributes people give them credit for, so they simply apply the attributes to themselves. "Honest" sounds good, to they're "honest". Even "patriot" sounds good to some if you scrape a little of the "racism" off. These "conservatives" are simply a brand of this type of preener who still finds some sort of value in attributing "conservative" to themselves. They can promote a Berniesized Joe Biden who would put people on the court more like Ginsburg and Sotomayor who would have sided with the liberal faction and have ruled that the Commerce Clause of the Constitution means that the Congress can compel commercial action, so that it can regulate it. No person would be his own. If Congress decrees you have to go out and buy a new TV, you do by the "Rule of Law". Lastly, the Never Trump *does not mind* selling you over to the liberal wolves, because you're not towing their line. As long as you're not going to be THEIR type of "conservative", they really don't care who berates you--you OUGHT to be berated. You don't flatter their sense of being right. -Insert a space or two in the URL so that it will break across lines (my preferred method, but be advised it still has the risk of blowing margins if you don't get the breaks in the right place, and it also pisses some people off even if the margins remain unblown) -Use tinyurl (personally, I won't ever follow a tinyurl link as I don't know where it will take me, but this is everyone else's preferred method) -Paste the link into the "URL" field just above the comment box and note in your comment that the link is in your nic. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 14, 2020 04:54 PM (hYcqw) Going off memory here, read this a couple years ago. But under law. Someone gets an intercept but the name is redacted as its an American. They can ask to unmask said name. They then have 24 hours to decide if there is some nefarious danger going on. If they think there is one they must go to court, and get a regular warrant. If not, then they cannot KEEP the unmasked document. Anyone they share that info with, is under that same 24 hour limit until they have to involve a Federal US Court (usually the FISA court, but the warrant becomes specific to the US Citizen). The only exceptions I remember is if the unmask shows an imminent attack on the US, or a Terrorist attack. Now, here where it gets really tangled. Once the FISA warrant is in place for the US citizen, there seems to be a loophole where they can go THREE contacts deep, and surveil other US citizens, as this is supposed to be for intelligence, not Prosecutorial reasons. So, CO has rules that if you're showing a house - even if it's vacant - the owner has to disinfect all commonly-touched surfaces (door knobs, countertops, faucets, etc.) after each showing. I was just on the phone with the realtor to coordinate doing this stupid thing to get my parents' house sold.
I am through being polite about this crap. I told her (though I suspect she is a Karen based on some of her language), "Look, I'm going to level with you. None of this nonsense handed by Polis has any basis in reality. I am looking to do the bare minimum to comply with these ridiculous edicts so that we can get this house sold. It's all pointless and it is hugely wasteful for me to drive there after each showing to wipe down surfaces in an empty house. I'll do it, but I am only doing the minimum. Let me know when the place has been shown and I'll sign the form or whatever." It took her a moment to recover. I feel kind of bad about it - I am sure she doesn't need me lashing out over it - but I am freaking done with this BS. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 14, 2020 05:10 PM (hYcqw) 459

Never Trump are kinda like little fiefdoms of the liberal kingdom and pretty much enclaves that have carved out a niche to rule in the same way the thought police of the liberal and progressive empire works.
If you are "decent", you will say what we say you should say and not what we say you should not say and you can remain inside the empire. However, if you don't agree, you can still life in one of the fiefdom enclaves set up by the Never Trump and say what *they* tell you to say and think what *they* tell you to think. And each fiefdom ruler knows that they have been tolerated and sort of deputized as *somewhat* tolerable by the progressive empire, so they defend the empire, but know the law of the land is that if you stay in any enclave outside the barbarian frontier that is The Trump hoardes, you must think like they do. Otherwise, they can't offer you protection (and they really don't want to). You must, from time to time, show your *fealty* to the Empire. Posted by: Axeman at May 14, 2020 05:12 PM (Eicbe) 472

Trump Begins His Final Authoritarian Push The story of Flynn's demise is really quite straightforward. As Trump foreign-policy adviser in 2016, Flynn was assigned among other things to find Hillary Clinton's deleted emails, facilitating Russia's efforts to sabotage her campaign. Posted by: JackStraw at May 14, 2020 05:14 PM (ZLI7S) --- Yes, but the rest of the relationship. Isn't it like 1. You must be progressive. You must prove yourself not "conservative". 2. Failing that the NTs take over, they KNOW "conservative". If you're not going to follow the rules of the progressives and you are going to insist on naming yourself with any conservative moniker--THEY will tell you how you have to be, if you're to be regarded as a "TRUE conservative". By insisting that you adhere to their definitions, they will at least "conserve conservatism". It's kind of like the difference between being a loyalist Russian who doesn't want to be jailed and beaten by the KGB and being a party member. The non-loyalist will be beaten by both. The citizen understands the Party, and not joining the Party because that's where they sit. The Party members suspect the mere citizens, but tolerate them if they prove their worth by providing enough loyalist noise. But will still abuse them as not truly committed to the success of the Party. Posted by: Axeman at May 14, 2020 05:21 PM (Eicbe) 532

Secret: I watched 8-10 clips of every episode on YouTube only a few days after each episode premiered on HBO. I later bought a few season packs on DVD from Walmart for like $30 and was shocked to discover I had only missed 2 or 3 scenes per episode, and that those scenes were dull filler that could have been cut anyway. 99. Never admit that you don't know everything. The dumber you are, the more condescending you will need to be in order to succeed in this position. Even if you're a bald, questioning history major from Texas with a weight problem, you can pretend to be a toned, worldly economist so long as you're able to maintain this pretense of intellectual infallibility.
100. Don't spread yourself too thin. Good issues to avoid altogether include issues that matter and issues on which Trump is obviously right. 101. Be vague and travel lightly. Never allow yourself to get nailed down on any issue because you never know when the townspeople will catch on. Always be ready to pack up the tent and move to the next town at a moment's notice in the dead of night. You can be severely conservative at dinner and be in libertarianville by breakfast if you're nimble enough. 102. Split every baby in half. Get familiar with phrases like "on the one hand" and "both sides" because you're gonna need them. This helps maintain the fake aura of certitude and allows you to be intellectually lazy enough to sit around all day eating and playing on Twitter. Speaking of movies....
The greatest horror movie of the 200's is currently playing again on cable right now. "The Collection"(2012) This is the 2nd movie in the perhaps trilogy concerning The Collector, a serial killer type that sets traps in his victims homes and businesses, and kills everyone there except for one person whose takes away. The first movie sets up the situation with the protagonist caught in a collecting scenario. The second movie is a YUGE expansion on the concept, which shows us what happened to the Collected, when a rescue team is sent to find the rich girl taken from a scene of mass murder. It's like "Aliens" compared to the first movie's "Alien". Massively creepy and tremendous tense throughout. Supposedly, part 3 "The Collected" was to be filmed this year. If you like tense, grimy horror movies and don't mind gore, check it out. Posted by: naturalfake at May 14, 2020 05:36 PM (z0XD8) 596

Debbie Does Dallas. Actually had a decent story line. Or.... so Im told. back before algore bought it, there was a channel in the backwaters of directv that showed a series from canada titled something like "good, clean porn". they'd get a porn move, take out all the dirty bits, and show what remained. debbie does dallas was one of the ones they did. Someone is going to have to explain to me in minute detail how withdrawing a plea after a shitload of exculpatory evidence comes out is contempt of court.

I think Glenn Reynolds is kind of where Tucker Carlson is. They still want cred for not being a Trump Partyline guy.
I like Tucker and watch his show a lot. However, I've seen him bail on Trump before he even has to--simply because rather than countering talking points he can just throw up his hands and say "Hey, I'm not defending Trump". For example, if he had studied more about the Don Jr. emails and the Trump Tower meeting, he wouldn't have had to punt in front of Richard Goodstein's constant distortions and misquotes about the emails and the meeting. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 14, 2020 05:46 PM (+eVzC) No, this is a different story. The movie of Fowles book is also good, but is now so old school you might find it fairly tame. Good for you, Donna.
Glad to hear you're "surviving" the "chaos" - SO FAR! I think the contempt of court would have come in the guilt plea, not the reversal. That's where the defendant (in a federal trial) has to affirm all kinds of stuff to the judge, all of it obviously a standard routine to avoid mistaken or misinformed or coerced pleas. But not entirely sure. Will Chamberlain had a good discussion of the overall context for the Sullivan order on his twatters yesterday - legal mechanics, etc. He said he might be bringing in someone more experienced in trial/contempt issues, as that's not his background, today or later. I think the play here might be writ of mandamus that gets it all taken away from Sullivan. And I don't think anybody thinks any kind of contempt process would survive appeal, if it got that far. Only watched season one of GoT. I read the first three books and liked Ned Stark. When I heard Sean Bean was playing him I had to watch.
Also being a zombie movie fan I wanted to see how they did the White Walkers. And watching Critical Drinker and Red Letter media review season 8 was pure fun. Posted by: Big V Caffeinated at May 14, 2020 05:56 PM (eMtQa) 670
