Because studios are dropping 9 figures on single movies and want to minimize the risk of that investment. A brand name is a way to mitigate that risk.
The only guy who gets to do that with any regularity anymore that's not tied to a franchise is Chris Nolan, and he gained that power by working in franchise movies.

The fact that I found Keaton believable as Batman despite that tells me a lot about his acting. Plus this was the first time I think that they started to move away from Adam West's version of Batman carrying an Acme bomb over his head for 10 minutes, so the bar for a more serious Batman was pretty low.

I'll admit I like some of the battle scenes from Lord of the Rings. Why? Semi realistic.
HATED the Hobbit and will never watch them again. Why? They turned the fight scenes into cartoons.
Much like the difference between the First Star Wars Movie, and Jumpy Ninja Yoda.
Even a fantasy, sci fi, or superhero movie has to be semi believable, or you break immersion.

Keaton has untapped intensity. I *hated* him in Pacific Heights--and I'm not the type of person to have an emotional reaction and fail to separate characters from actors. It happens very rarely. But it took about half a day to realize where I was and to realize how stupid it was to feel that I never wanted to see another Keaton film again.

There are several sources of the problem. One of them is audiences.
They don't seem that interested in going to see much of anything that's not a giant CGI rollercoaster ride. There's a reason low-mid budgeted movies are moving to streaming services rather than theatrical releases.
Hell, even Martin Scorsese is going streaming because theatrically based studios don't want to risk money on him.

But it won't work for Batman. Batman has no super powers. He's just a rich dude who kicks ass and fights for justice.

Ethan Hawke's character is a time loop. He's his own parents--both of them--and I think he gets taken out by his younger assassin self, so he has no beginning and no end.
It's based on an old Robert Heinlein story. Pretty f*cked up no matter what the source material, though.

Back to the Batman thing, only one Batman actor has taken the physicality of the role seriously and that's Christian Bale. Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney did fuckall for lifting weights. Ben Affleck simply abstained from pizza and beer to lose a little bit of chub. The workout scenes in Batman V Superman where he has abs is CGI. So, Pattinson deciding to forgo the gym does have precedence.

The whole point of Batman is that he uses his vast resources to be as close to a superhero as possible without actual supernatural powers. Yeah, you got to be buff for that. Technology, even Batman's, can only carry you so far. You could more easily argue that Superman or other traditional superheros shouldn't be buff, since they get their powers from things other than muscle mass.

the thing is, though, that I've heard that Hollywood trainers now have the safe administration of limited, short cycles of steroids "down to a science." That's why that femme-looking afghani guy from Silicon Valley now has a superhero build for the Marvel movie (and he got it in, like, a month).

Honestly, as a big DC and Batman fan I went into DoJ hating the idea of Affleck as Batman. I was one of those people saying he just wasn't the right guy for that role. And...I was pleasantly surprised. I think he actually did okay. Maybe it was the expectation that I had, I dunno, but he carried it off. IMHO anyway. Obviously opinions vary. *shrug*

My biggest issue was the jumbled back and forth between past and present. There's moments where in one scene you're in the past and the very next scene you're in the present.
It got confusing at times.

Confession: one of my secret shames is my interest in historical costumers on YouTube (DON'T JUDGE ME!). This gal has an interesting video on her experience wearing historical clothing every day for five years. One of the things she noticed is how much historical clothing was designed to flatter and shape a figure, versus modern clothing which often leaves nothing hidden, and which is more "body-friendly" to women.

I don't disagree. I believe that projecting a respectable exterior is a sign of discipline and respect for oneself or others, which are inner virtues. Embracing ugliness points to ugliness or hate inside, IMO.

I can attest. One of the best fighters in my old SCA group was a girl who was about four foot six.
Her sword work was good. Not long on raw strength, but enough to kill. Brilliant shield technique combined with her small size made her nearly impossible to land a hit on. I managed it *once*, over the course of years of training. You may as well have been trying to hack at a tank for all the good it did. (an equivalent shield for someone my size would be a hood from a 1960s Cadillac, so I couldn't replicate the style if I wanted to.)

Armed combat is often more about angles and timing than strength. Find the bind, cover key lines, and try to get an angle that allows you to strike your opponent without being struck in turn.

Exactly that. A lot of my bag of tricks basically revolved around positioning my opponent until he gave up an angle for one of the shots I was good at.
