U.S. officials believe China covered up the extent of the coronavirus outbreak -- and how contagious the disease is -- to stock up on medical supplies needed to respond to it, intelligence documents show.
Chinese leaders "intentionally concealed the severity" of the pandemic from the world in early January, according to a four-page Department of Homeland Security intelligence report dated May 1 and obtained by The Associated Press. The revelation comes as the Trump administration has intensified its criticism of China, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying Sunday that that country was responsible for the spread of disease and must be held accountable.

- Suspended intra-China travel from Wuhan, but permitted international travel from Wuhan.
- Provided faulty PPE and testing equipment to many countries.
- Attached conditions to PPE and testing sales to force Huawei 5G equipment, or there is no sale at any price.

As a start. Here are some of my thoughts on this:
- No tariff-free goods from China. Start with a blanked 25% tariff, and crank it up to 200% over five or seven years.
- Revoke most-favored nation status.
- Sanction them in all international organizations (UN, WTO, etc. etc.). If those organizations refuse to comply, we need to leave those organizations and encourage our allies to do the same.
- Any third country that helps China end-run sanctions (transhipping, false papers, etc.) gets the same treatment.

This wasn't just some show for the west, their leadership was panicked. They may have taken advantage of the situation, but there was still a real situation.

Pneumonia is the real mechanism that causes death from a respiratory virus.

It was all laid out then. They have followed the plan to a T. we have let ourselves get checked in all of those areas through laziness, greed, and apathy. Asshats like Ben Rhoades should fucking know better, and my guess is that he does. But i'm willing to bet he's in bed with the Chicoms like so many others, willing to kowtow to the emperor.
The one silver lining is that many in the govt are taking and have taken the threat from the PRC seriously.

That one is pretty easy, and if the information coming out of Trump's collection of economic warriors is any indication, it's already in the works. Essentially, if you make it unappetizing for any company (not just US) to do business with China they pretty much turn back into a third world country with one big difference (a handful of the Little Red Book crew v. My understanding is that incentive programs are being designed to bring back industry from China (electronics, textiles, medical equip, ...everything). The thing is, just about every industry in the US is at a point where they are going to have to go along with it to save their profits that have been destroyed over the last few months. THey are ripe for the picking (IOW...cooperation).

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are some interesting meetings taking place right now with Apple...because once they vacate China's sweat shops, everyone else will follow...and China is going to have some internal problems after that. The draw down of foreign investment into China has been going on for some time. There are a lot of places with cheap, skilled and intelligent labor that doesn't want you dead available. Think India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Phillipines.... Like I said, from a risk mitigation point of view, no corporation wants to be held hostage by China. That was one area. I'm sure if you dug deep, you'd find the same shit in Chicago, Miami, LA, SF, Austin...on and on.

This is from the Hoover Institute. The doctor in the interview has completed several large tests of the public for antibodies. In a more recent interview, he gives the results (which are that way more people have had this and didn't know it, which makes the death rate even lower.)

The interesting thing about this interview is they ask him about Fauci saying the death rate would be 10 times that of the flu. He says that he didn't have any business saying that. They don't know number of people that have been infected with it. If you don't know that number, you can't know the death rate. And You Tube has a CNBC video about a study in Germany that also found a higher rate of antibodies in the public than expected.

That's utter bullshit.

The Soviets had a massive propaganda organization directed at their own population. The East Germans built a domestic spying apparatus that was unrivaled by any other country. They don't do that because they have no fear of their populations. They did that because they were terrified of discontent in their populations. Totalitarians are often terrified, because even if the masses don't have the ability to overthrow a dictator themselves, then can provide the support needed for rivals to do so.

I know Bush is persona non-grate among many on the right, and it's not entirely undeserved, but the truth is that he was right about a lot of things, such as the need to contain China, pandemic risks, etc. The problem is that he was an example of the problem of second-gen "conservatives": too much loyalty and support for the institutions and an inability to see outside of them.

It's going to climb. My company in Georgia walked out 3000 employees, a quarter of the workforce on Friday. Wichita, Spirit - the old Boeing plant - laid off 1400. Textron is furloughing a large part of their beech, cessna, hawker employees for who knows how long.

There are cascading effects that will start amplifying the numbers. Part suppliers not making deliveries, to subcontractors not fulfilling components to manufactures with reduced workforce. And to restart a factory is no easy thing because of overhead due to certification and inspection requirements.

I don't know how the broken egg will be put back together when the panic is over.

319 Well, on a more serious note, we COULD keep more manufacturing (the ONLY jobs people care about) in the country. But that would mean things like drastically reducing needless regulation on state and local levels, drastically reducing taxation on state and local levels, things like Right to Work laws being instituted in all 50 states, having an education system worth a damn, having an education system worth a damn that doesn't have, as a goal, sending everyone off to college because not everyone SHOULD go, making government at all levels more business and entrepreneur friendly, etc etc etc...

In other words, set things up so that people and companies don't WANT to leave and don't feel that they HAVE to leave.

But...that requires hard work, and electing people and governments that will do that, and Americans can't be bothered. It's much easier to find scapegoats and bitch about them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about things being made in China as much as the next guy. The Wuhan Flu shows us that while other countries can be trusted in trade, China can't be, and therefore we should stop doing business with them to the extent it's possible. And we CAN. But we need to get our house in order so people in our country can and will do lots of business right here at home. Just demanding people open up shop here will not cut it.
