Lee Smith: What's Good for Communist China Is Good for America, Dianne Feinstein Says, As She Gets Rich on China Deals

China Queen Dianne Feinstein Used Her Senate Power to Push Most-Favored-Nation Status for the CCP’s Corrupt Dictatorship. Why?

No one represents the marriage of American policy toward China and doing business with the PRC better than Feinstein. Her promotion of trade with China to advance the interests of her constituents turned into apologetics on behalf of the Communist Party, as it aided her political ascent and augmented her husband’s portfolio. In October, USA Today listed Feinstein as the sixth-richest member of Congress, with a net worth of $58.5 million—a sum that vastly understates her actual wealth. Richard Blum, her husband, is himself worth at least another $1 billion.

...

In 1994, Blum’s company, Blum Capital, had entered a joint venture to found Newbridge Capital, specializing in emerging markets, including Asia. Blum said in 1997 that less than 2% of the approximately $1.5 billion that his firm managed was committed to China. He held a $300 million stake in Northwest Airlines when it operated the only nonstop service from the United States to cities in China. In 2002, Newbridge was negotiating to acquire 20% of Shenzhen Development Bank. After some rough seas, it paid $145 million for an 18% share two years later, marking the first time a Chinese bank came under control of a foreign entity.

Feinstein says that Blum’s business in China had no effect on her foreign policy or trade positions regarding the country. "We have built a firewall," she said of her relationship with her husband. "That firewall has stood us in good stead."

Yet the record shows that the marriage between Blum's business and Feinstein's political career is a very close one. Journalists from Feinstein's home state's two largest media markets, Los Angeles and San Francisco, covered that relationship thoroughly and often quite skeptically throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. The fact that relationships that should have come under serious scrutiny have rarely been portrayed in anything other than a favorable light--the New Yorker breathlessly reported in a 2015 profile that China’s former President Jiang Zemin had spent Thanksgiving as a guest at the Blum-Feinstein home in San Francisco--reveals the extent to which the American elite has subscribed wholesale to the unproven theory that business with the Chinese Communist Party was good for America.

What began as faith in the inherent goodness of relations between the United States and China eventually transformed into something dark, crude, and cynical. As Benjamin Weingarten recently reported, Feinstein has repeatedly criticized Trump's tariffs on China, turning her advocacy for the Communist Chinese government into an instrument of domestic political warfare--and cementing a pro-China policy as a foreign policy touchstone to rival support for the JCPOA, President Obama's Iran deal, within the Democratic Party.

...

And the relationship [with China's soon-to-be-president] benefited Feinstein personally. In 1993, Jiang became president of China and invited Feinstein and Blum to Beijing to meet with party leadership. According to a 1994 Los Angeles Times story, Blum was planning to bundle $2 million to $3 million of his own with another $150 million from other investors to invest in state-owned enterprises, including telecommunications equipment.

Feinstein said at the time that Blum's economic interest in China was "news to me." The couple denied that his business in China profited from her then 15-year friendship with the president of China. "He is in San Francisco running his business, I am in Washington being a United States senator, and they are two separate things," Feinstein told reporters. "I don't know how I can prove it to people like you. Maybe I get divorced. Maybe that is what you want."

There's a logic to Feinstein's self-pity--she was being singled out for doing what everyone else was also doing, or dreamed of doing. Taking a piece of the action was good for America, the winners told themselves.

87 USA Today listed Feinstein as the sixth-richest member of Congress, with a net worth of $58.5 million--a sum that vastly understates her actual wealth. Richard Blum, her husband, is himself worth at least another $1 billion.

At some point, we really have to seriously ask the question: if you have over a billion dollars, what is your reason for wanting to be in congress? Why not retire to family, leisure, and hobbies?

I can see continuing to work when you've got that much money, because it's the work that is how you continue to have that much money.

Which probably answers the question of why Feinstein would want to continue in congress.

Posted by: Vanya at April 22, 2020 01:26 PM (BAsqb)

===========

Checks and balances was never supposed to just horizontal within the federal government, it was supposed to have a vertical component manifested in the states having direct say in how the federal government was run. That happened two ways. The first was through the election of the president. States elect the president, technically, not the people. The other was the Senate.

The presidential election has morphed over the years to become 50 popular races, but the Senate being elected directly has probably done more to destroy the American system of governance than any other single action. Suddenly, the states became captive clients of the federal government. They could screech all day, but they couldn't force any change.

And now, if we were to suddenly go back to the system, it wouldn't work because we now have decades of states receiving federal funds for different things. It would probably make state dependence on the federal government worse.

That is why they need to let everyone out and let it run its natural course.

Unless they aren't telling us something.

I have to say, the "doctors" from all corners of the Earth are acting overly paranoid which makes me wonder. The way they are washing off groceries, tossing the plastic bags right away, rinsing all fruits and veggies in the sink, wiping down the kitchen after unpacking and cleaning, etc. The extent they are going through themselves, even if young and healthy. It's bizarre. Not just doing it, but telling us how they are doing it.

I remember at the beginning of all of this when some Indian doctors/scientists said they found HIV intertwined within the coronavirus. They were shut down very quickly and told to retract what they said.

A lot of the symptoms of wuhan virus matches that of HIV, like cough. The other thing I heard is that HIV tests negative too, two, three times in some cases, just like this one does.

Not going black helicopter conspiracy, but the way the doctors are acting it's a bit strange if it is simply a virus that is more contagious than any other.

Maybe it's not death they are afraid of, but what it leaves behind in your body.

It is man made. If it's man made then we have no idea how our bodies will react after we show no symptoms or have produced "antibodies". They are saying it is possible it can reactivate in the body. A possibility, but no proof.

No proof of anything. And no real data anywhere. But the doctors sure are acting strange.

I remain convinced, Senators for the most part aren't really human. They're the head of a sort of living organism, and they're hooked up to all the goo that flows to and from them.

They're animated when they need to be, and otherwise, they just absorb the goo on one end, send it out on the other.

And beneath them are a massive hive of drones who keep the organism "alive."

So when one gets old, they continue to keep it going, until they can find a new host to occupy the head.

And they will. Hers will be some ambitious congresscritter or state senator, or maybe even Gavin. Garcetti. Someone like that. They'll gladly have their carcasses hooked up to the machine.

Said order, it is said, shall mandate the wearing of a mask when out of one's own home.

For the next 30 days.

* County Judge is effectively the "Mayor" of the County, and Harris County is where Houston, TX is found.

Now then.

Can anyone direct my attention to any Statute in the Texas Civil Code which assigns or delegates such a power to a County Judge?

If a County Sheriff were to accost some unfortunate soul for NOT wearing a mask, what would be written on the citation?

Which charge would be brought in court, under which Article and Section of the Texas Criminal Code?

If she or her Democrat Communist enablers cannot speak to or otherwise point out such legal cites, then her "Order" won't be worth the toilet paper it'll be issued on.

Easy for me to say: "Fuck this shit, I shall not obey." 'Cause I live in Galveston County.

But when I go up to Houston to do business? (Collector's Firearms just opened it's NEW store, twice the size, at Westheimer & Voss. It was ALREADY the World's Largest Gun Store, and now it's DOUBLE the size!)

Like say China and it's subject population that the government feels free to treat worse than chattel slaves. I doubt blindly trading with them is an ideal approach in a moral world.

I had direct experience with this in the 80s, in high tech, employing a Chinese national. I have said this many time in the past here on HQ.

He returned to China to visit family and was interviewed upon arrival. They found out what industry he was in, and set up another interview with specialist in industry to see if he could "consult" to help them out. He had Chinese language business card.

He told me that he was afraid not to cooperate, since he was afraid his family would lose apartment in Beijing and have to move to province.

Later, in DC, I noticed many Chinese engineers had Chinese language business card even though they never traveled for our company and had no contact with Chinese speakers (officially)

I have had my hair on fire over china since the 80s.

213 Easy...TERM LIMITS!
Posted by: Tami at April 22, 2020 01:23 PM (cF8AT)

Sadly, no. Term limits don't work. We have them in California. Does California strike you as a political nirvana? Termed out legislators merely propose sweetheart legislation - which inevitably passes - for some union or industry, then go to a sinecure funded by that union or industry. The legislator and the union/industry wins. Who loses? Duh. The taxpayer.

There's only one solution: an informed and engaged electorate.

Simple, mechanically applied solutions are just too easy to game.

238 Cornyn is a quiet liberal democrat.

One of the single biggest problems we've had for a while is that the same people control the Democrats and most of the Republicans.

It all started with Hastert - remember the FNM destroyed Newt and Newt's chosen successor?

And Hastert....well a few reporters have since admitted to knowing what he was doing but, well, for various reasons they never actually reported on it. You'll also note Hastert did NOTHING with a Republican majority.

And when Hastert wasn't useful anymore suddenly the knives came out for him....but by that point the Republicans were a neutered party offering no alternative to the left.....just slower.

Hell 2012 was the nadir of this. With the public revolting over Obamacare the Republicans nominated the architect of Obamacare v0!

Same thing with teachers. Kids are functionally illiterate, and God knows innumerate? Only one solution: pay teachers more!

Oh, really? Then fire them and replace them with people who WILL do their jobs at the current pay (which is very good, actually, at least here in California, which has appalling academic results). People FIGHT to get K-12 teaching jobs here because of the pay and benefits.

If everyone can get off their duffs and stand in line - in the middle of a 'pandemic' - for TP, they can show up to vote, for goodness sakes.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at April 22, 2020 02:00 PM (YqDXo)

I'm all for teachers making six figures.

However, I believe the entire public school system should be scrapped.

Someone, somewhere in the past had the non-so-brilliant idea that teaching is something that can be learned, like becoming an electrician.

Since the dawn of time, teaching was a recognized talent, like the ability to sing. You either had it or you didn't. Nobody sat on a rock bench in ancient Rome to listen to someone who didn't have the ability to connect and transfer knowledge effectively.

Start with the cities. Bulldoze all existing schools, disband all administrations and just give the parent a full value voucher. Let that parent keep the money if they home school. The only thing we, as taxpayers, ask is that the kid pass a test each year to show the money isn't being wasted. If the kid can't pass, someone from the state spends the money for the kid.

Let the free market work it's magic with teachers selling their services to parents. Those that can teach will grow rich while those who can't will starve.

This is how it should be.

Posted by: 18-1 at April 22, 2020 02:02 PM (WdocV)

I have no love for China, but miscalculation is the hallmark of the beginnings of great wars. If we moved to attack mainland China in any way, they'll use their missile capacity (which even our military has acknowledged they have) to take out our active carrier groups with nukes. (Satellite targeting with long range ballistic missiles) We don't have a defense against that.

So, the next question would be, after they stage nuclear attacks on our carriers, what level of nuclear response do we make? I would point out that the hard logic of first strikes is that you have to Go Big. Use it or Lose it, if you're going to light up the missiles, light them ALL up at once.

and of course China will be making the same calculation.

Whether they've reacreated them or not, I don't know, but they got the plans.

Article V Convention. although - I think, when it happens, and it will happen someday (although probably not in our lifetimes), that will actually bring about the breakup of the country, with different areas deciding on different constitutions.

Texas and California, for example, would never ever agree on what kind of Constitution to live under, if they were asked to come up with something new. Whichever block wins the Article V Convention battle, the other side leaves the country and starts their own.

That is what that Frog Noble Laureate who said it was obvious to
him that the Wuhan virus was being played with. He speculated they were
trying to make an HIV vaccine, and were splicing HIV sequences into this
coronavirus for purposes related to that.

---
That's a charitable interpretation. I'm not sure it meshes with their efforts to cover it up early on, to the point of destroying sampes that their own people had taken.

512 Something that people often forget about Sun Tzu is that his thoughts are all focused on how to win, even when you're weaker than the enemy. He would have thought that any marginally competent commander ought to be able to win if he started off *stronger* than the enemy. In that case, the commander needs to primarily keep himself from making stupid mistakes.

516 They had four aircraft carriers (which were sunk 6 months after Pearl) and one battleship.

This is not accurate.

6 fleet carriers (Hosho, Ryujo, Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu). The first was sunk at Coral Sea, the last four at Midway.

10 battleships with three Yamatos building. One of those became the Shinano, which sailed out of port for the first time and a US submarine sank her 45 minutes later.

Like Halsey taking damn near the entirety of Third Fleet up toward Formosa to go after empty enemy capital ships and leaving Leyte Gulf effectively unguarded other than a couple of escort carrier task forces who fought like tigers and made the Japanese blink?

520 Why is it beyond the pale to kill one politicial/military leader for strategic reasons, but not to launch a war that kills millions on both sides.

Posted by: 18-1 at April 22, 2020 02:35 PM (WdocV)

******
It isn't, but leaders don't want the risk of assassination on their heads.
They will risk millions of their own people in a war, but out of pure, naked personal self interest, don't want to run the risk of they themselves getting assassinated.

521 Doesn't sound like that great a general based on that response.
Posted by: The Federal Reserve at April 22, 2020 02:42 PM (w+Ped)

The reason no one want's to take the bait of "proof" is that, as with anyone who may or may not have lived 2500 years ago, actual "proof" of their existence or their deeds is always hard to pin down. But almost every scholar agrees that his book has been around a long time and was written by someone with a keen understanding of military strategy. Whether that was one author, or two separate authors who were later combined, we can't "prove". So we go with the long accepted judgment that there was a General of the State of Wu who lived and fought about 2500 years ago, during the period of the Warring States, and he left behind a remarkable piece of writing. And also that the State of Wu was able to maintain its strength and independence during his life and well after his death, until the State of Qin (Chin) finally absorbed all other competitors.

Yeah, China would hate Japan to have nuclear weapons. Personally, I think it is inevitable at this point, and it is probably baked into the cake.

Japan going nuclear means that China would *probably* have to give up on Okinawa.

526 507 494 In 1941 Japan had a better navy then the US.

Not really. They had four aircraft carriers (which were sunk 6 months after Pearl) and one battleship. They did us a favor hammering our battleships and freeing up sailors for other ships.
Posted by: Puddin Head at April 22, 2020 02:39 PM (kX3ms)

They did hit us pretty hard in the early part of the war. At one point, Enterprise was the only operational US fleet carrier in the Pacific theater. Once the Essex-class started leaving the yards, it was all over for them. They simply couldn't match our production, and we built a lot of them with amazing speed.

Don't be so fast to take the option of the table. We wouldn't need to invade, all we'd have to do is sink their pathetic navy, which is something the combined forces the US and Japan could handle in about a week, and then just lock down their ports until they cry uncle.
