Physics Geek: This Isn't About Controlling a Virus.
This Is About Controlling the Deplorables.

Hail PhysicsGeek.

Remember how the social distancing and shutdowns were designed to flatten the curve? And do you remember the purpose of the flattening? That's right: it was to prevent the number of cases from exceeding our medical services capacity to handle the number of cases.

And yet now there appears to be a growing trend to require everyone in the country to be tested before we start to open things up again.

Or there's the fringe group who thinks we must wait until a vaccine gets developed (note: IF it gets developed). I saw one idjit bleat "I deserve a virus free life!". The stupidity and ignorance, while stunning, is unsurprising.

Anyway, getting back to the first tweet in this thread. All of the actions we've taken weren't designed to eradicate the disease. They were designed to slow the infections to a manageable level.

However, if you slow the number of infections instead of eliminating them, you still get the same total number of infections, or close to it, especially with a high R value virus.

So we tried to keep Covid-19 from rolling across the country unimpeded. We did so for a little while, but we cannot do it forever. And then the people in charge decided to overreach, which is what people in charge always do.

Sorry, you can't buy seeds to grow your own food because that's considered non-essential.

Sorry, you can't go for a run on the beach by yourself because that's non-essential.

Sorry, we're letting people out of jail, but we'll arrest you for disobeying our edicts.
Physics Geek

And then what a surprise, a country founded on rebellion to tyrannical rule gets a little pissy at the "let them eat cake" crowd and decide to hold some protests about the extended lockdowns.

The "let them eat cake" crowd doesn't like being disobeyed
and gets big tech to takedown free speech posts about peaceful demonstrations because said demonstrations oppose government edicts. Uh huh.

I enjoy studying history, but I have no interest in seeing the French Revolution part deux in this country. All y'all who think you can condescendingly lecture people who are genuinely worried about keeping their homes and feeding their families are trying to light that match.

Things are quite possibly going to get very ugly very soon unless some pull their heads out of their collective asses. Here's hoping the head pulling happens instead of the other thing.

"The 'Let Them Eat Cake' crowd doesn't like being disobeyed." This explains 95% of the behavior of the Democrat Media Complex and the Professional Managerial Class and the NeverTrump Establishment Cux.

Would be rulers need people who will agree to be ruled over.

They get very angry when people say "Go fuck yourself and die."

The key reason is because I do not believe that the testing regime will not *also* be used to be an illegal DNA and tracking database. The goons running this place would love to get such a thing, and I have less than no trust that testing will be just testing.

During the rebel Sixties, one could easily identify the ranks of the hardcore left by their constant predictions of a coming fascism and the evident glee with which they welcomed the prospect.

Whether this was the product of a serious attempt to read the political winds, or merely a radical wish was irrelevant. They defended it as a strategy of "the worse the better." In the 1968 presidential election, it was better to elect a fascist like Nixon than a moderate like Hubert Humphrey --- that is, if you were serious about revolution. . .

At this point, I assume that pain is the point of what these Lefty tyrants are doing. As Obama said about the #BLM protests, we have to be inconvenienced in order to get change. This is Democrat nudge, nudge, nudging.

105 I had nightmares last night about COVID. Can't remember details but it was a general scenario of scary amount of death happening in the world. Not waking up in terror or anything but a dream that had a general sense of dread, but I rarely have scary or "bad" dreams. Anyways, you know a lot of people are going to have experienced a low level amount of trauma when this is over. Gotta think we'd be handling and coping with this much better if this was happening in, say, 1988... before cable TV and internet social media. People'd be like "fuck -- a bunch of people are diving of this around the country. What can I do not to catch it?" Large crowd events would still be canceled, and maybe people'd be advised against having guests over and such, but we'd have a lot better perspective.

If you want individual liberty then you yourself are going to have to practice your rightful freedom. You may be confronted by police, even arrested, so be prepared to make a few sacrifices for freedom. It doesn't come cheap.

I think therefore in that spirit it should be suggested that everyone in media, the academy, and government immediately and indefinitely STOP getting paid, and have their health insurance benefits cut off. That way, they could begin to have a sense of what their preferred policies are actually doing in real time, and perhaps they would discover a sense of empathy by sharing the misery of millions before making their policy pronouncements.

The most credible story traces 4 20 to Marin County, Calif. In 1971, five students at San Rafael High School would meet at 4:20 p.m. by the campus statue of chemist Louis Pasteur to partake. They chose that specific time because extracurricular activities had usually ended by then. This group - Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich - became known as the Waldos because they met at a wall. They would say 420 to each other as code for marijuana.

Have heard that story since I was in high school.

167 We are now using estimates from our COVID-19 death models and estimates of infection fatality ratio (IFR) to produce estimates of COVID-19 incidence and prevalence. We then use these estimates to identify the date after which the number of COVID-19 infections is predicted to fall below 1 per 1,000,000 people in each location. This date can be viewed as the earliest time that locations could consider easing social distancing restrictions - conditional on containment measures already in place to avert potential resurgence of the virus. Such necessary containment efforts include extensive testing, robust contact tracing and isolation of new cases, and maintaining restrictions on mass gatherings of people.

CORONA RULES ACCORDING TO KAREN.

1. You MUST stay at home. Unless you have to go out. Then its OK. People need groceries, liquor, pot, lottery tickets, etc. Then its Ok. BUT STAY AT HOME PEOPLE!!!!

2. Masks dont do any good. Until they do. Then they are mandatory.

3. You CANNOT under ANY CIRCUSTANCES.... see your older parents. But you may see other peoples older parents at the gorcery store, the tire store, on in an Uber. Thats OK. Just not yours.

4. We have to flatten the curve.... to avoid overloading the hospitals. Right up to the point not a single person ever gets infected with COVID again.

5. No groups larger than 10. Unless your playing catch with you daughter alone in a park. THEN no groups larger than 1. You'll be arrested.

6. Social Distancing must be greater than 6 feet. Unless your camping by yourself, fishing or hunting by yourself, surfing by yourself, planting seeds by yourself.

7. NO PRAYING!!! This means YOU Bible thumpers. Doesnt mater what the crowd size, drive through distance or even if its online. NO CHURCH. And DEFINITELY NO COMMUNION..... Unless your drinking wine dayschoolong your kids. Then its OK

8. If you think you have COVID, do NOT go to the hospital or emergency room. Because they are all closed down and getting layed off because nobodies going to the emergency room. Unless your pregnant and you want to kill it. They are open.

9. Whatever Trump says.... do the opposite.

10. 30 Million people out of work is small price to pay so we can be superior human berings all be all compassionatey and stuff. Look for our upcoming ribbon sales drive to raise awareness.

Is the argument against federal restrictions or local restrictions. Or is it that the fed and local are in cahoots.

I believe that President Trump believed, considering all data, that there was a clear and present danger.

I believe that President Trump is one of the smartest presidents.

His federalist approach to this problem illustrates that he has no interest in enlarging federal power over the people, quite the opposite.

Trump has been in the process of devolving federal power back to the states as it should be. This has exposed many local autocrats.

This plague and Trump have created better opportunity for local people to organize and focus on and fix opinion toward these autocrats and vote them out of office.

255 A "growing trend" to make everyone get tested? Hmmm. Missed that. WH "proposed" guidelines only mention testing for health care workers - that's it. And no specific level of that is even part of the "phases".

Waiting for a vaccine? "Fringe" is quite an exaggeration, not a chance of that being a benchmark for anything.

Who knows, maybe this fall will be some kind of test in itself, to see if there is *any* American sensibility or practical common sense left in the more dumbed down civic deserts of the country - i.e., electoral backlash. But I doubt it.

Ignoring arbitrary or obviously silly rules is one thing - actually voting to punish the perps - who are after all of the correct tribal coloration and mumble the correct idiotic mantras - well that would be quite a rebellion.

People are going to want to go to the beach, the lake, camping, traveling, etc.As it is, just a couple weeks into this lockdown, people are getting antsy. More and more people are out and about - very few wearing masks, etc. Just in my office coworkers are telling of people being very rude to grocery store workers (one has a daughter who works at one, and she was threatened this past weekend). If this continues for much longer, it'll only take a spark to ignite a fire.

303 Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

**but the lewis quote goes on

They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.

The bar for being cleared as recovered is kind of high. You have to be symptom free for two weeks and then get retested.

So, my guess is that a bunch of people are simply not getting retested, feeling better and like the illness is behind them. And, the hospitals, who are administering the tests, are putting them low on the list of priorities as they search for new cases.

325 I agree that we should start opening up most businesses and all schools in the next few weeks, but with sensible ordinances like you have to sit down at a table to have a beer at a bar. No events greater than 50 people. Cut back max-occupancy rules by 50% in restaurants. And for services that require touching, like hair cutters, maybe require stylist to wear an N95 mask. Ask that teachers in schools take a leave of absence if they have one of the serious risk factors. We can operate at 85% normally and still keep the outbreak at bay, but these overzealous edicts by the Governors are damaging society.

+++++++++++++
If TN is any standard, it's going to lag bigly. At least TN provides methodology - CO doesn't report on it at all.

TDH defines "recovered" aspeople who
(1) have been confirmed to be asymptomatic by their local or regional health department and have completed their required isolation period or
(2) are at least 21 days beyond the first test confirming their illness.

So recovery requires sign-off an quarantine (which is two weeks) or three weeks asymptomatic. So presumably after three weeks, people who were tested positive and also not dead will start counting at around 28 days or so.

I doubt it. Those places didn't get where they were by having effectively intelligent, informed voters with any American mindset. Can see a few outliers being picked off here and there.

Also, think there's a decent chance of a vile racist race-baiting offensive by Dems to top even the constant background racist indoctrination of current "education" and pop culture. "Differential impact", you see. The Dems are even more desperately dependent than before on yuuuge robotic tribal loyalty from "minorities", in select markets. They've shown there is no limit to the repugnant tactics they'll use to generate turn-out with those demos.

So the actual contributing factors of individual health condition will be ignored, in favor of "systemic racism" - it's idiotic, but no more so than the usual idiotic racism myths they, and those demos, rely on in lieu of facts and reason.

They'll just try to shame Trump into bailing them out. I think guys like Murphy and Cuomo are doing this for as long as they can get away with it because when it's over, they'll just say, "Okay give us the money we lost over YOUR shutdown."
They'll think they'll have leverage too because trump is trying to win re-election.

But they forgot about the part where their blue states aren't going for Trump anyway, so why should he help?

Fracking also unlocked enough where OPEC can't control things the way they once did.

In rocket surgeon news, apparently some landlord decided that what he would do was go to the IRS site and enter in all his tenants' SSNs and DOBs and check to see if they got their $1,200 (there's a where's my money portal) and then texted one of his tenants to say hey you got yours where's my rent.

545 This is the first time the #science frauds have actually captivated the nation. The fact that there is some real need for countermeasures here lends them credibility enough to sell it as the apocalypse but for obedience to their authority. This gave them what they've never had with hysteria regarding climate change/GMO/etc., and so they will drive it like they stole it.

More, they're basing our guidance and orders on what's going on in spectacularly tiny metropolitan centers of wealth and influence. Population density does not make a place universally representative. The best plan to address a virus will depend on cultural and demographic factors that are not uniform across all US or global communities. (Nevermind all the economic and societal variables excluded from their hide-at-any-cost plan.)

Don't you dare say it, though. If you don't enthusiastically wear the one-size-fits-all mumu, the megaphones of those metropolitan centers will pillory your good name. Genuflect, you ignorant disease vector!

If there's ever another Civil War, readmitted states should be reduced to territory status, given a Congressionally-appointed governor to unfuck their education systems and municipal governments, and ultimately broken up into smaller units along logical regional / ideological lines (if a large state) or parted out to neighboring states (if a small one) in order to prevent it from ever happening again.

(For instance, Massachusettes, Connecticut, and Rhode Island might get merged, Upstate New York might get its own government, NYC might get rolled into New Jersey just to troll them, etc.)

615 My 476 -- I was wrong, someone above correctly said that one barrel of crude is 42 US gallons.

Come May 1, producers can require you to take delivery at Cushing, OK of 1,000 barrels of crude at the stated contract price of (currently) $5.17 per barrel.

So you're gonna need a few tankers and a 42,000 gallon storage tank in your back yard to take advantage of this price.

I think it was just a toxic stew of opportunists and opportunity.

The Democrats have been looking for any excuse they can to clamp things down and hurt Trump, and this virus came along at a time when everything else had failed. A little Gell-Mann Amnesia sets in, and people are back to trusting "the experts" and their pronouncements of doom.

China, for its part, was also opportunistic. They had a deadly virus escape from one of their labs via their own incompetence. If they threw themselves on the grenade and shut down air travel from Wuhan in a timely fashion, they would have contained the economic damage within China, caused their dependencies to question their dependence, and ensured they never become an economic superpower.

By keeping air travel open so millions of people could spread the virus far and wide, they ensured that the economic damage would hit everywhere, and they wouldn't fall behind.

I love how feminists and gay activists are CONSTANTLY invoking the single worst institution in American history to justify their activism. The one that caused our bloodiest war and permanently poisoned race relations and hampered our public policy even after it was eliminated.

These fucking idiots actually seem to think it's somehow comparable to their putative travails. And they don't understand why everyone else - black, white, everyone - is all "WTF, guys? Maybe you wanna dial that down a little."

couldn't Trump rescind the Emergency Declaration? that is how Tsar Wolf got his "special powers" - our state constitution needs to be back in power here - he would be quickly stopped he is breaking the state constitution! but he CAN b/c of the federal emergency status

ALSO - Trump has to make it SUPER CLEAR that no states are getting bailed out. THAT will also stop Asshat Wolf. any bailout and he'll just keep the punishment going

State tax revenues are generated in states. Keeping a state shut only drains the coffers. They will have to reopen. Plus, when blue staters see others back to work and making money as their bank accounts drain, that tends to piss one off, regardless of party.

Posted by: Floridachick at April 20, 2020 01:24 PM (uUJI/)

I applied on the first day for the emergency loan for my main business. Complicated form, needed to download tax returns and fill out a personal financial statement. About a week later, I get an email that says go back the to the SBA website and fill out the new one-page form.

As soon as that was sent, I got an "application submitted" form with the application number.

About a week after that I received a deposit in my bank account for the advance/grant, but only $1000 per employee.

Then, yesterday (on Sunday, no less) I received an email that said my loan had been approved. I never applied for any amount, but they said I would receive $131,000. I had to click on the button that I approved of the terms (3.75%, 30 years, no payment for a year). Now I'm waiting on the (electronic signature) close.

I have two other applications in for substantially larger businesses. When I called the SBA on Sunday 1-800-659-2955 , I waited on hold for two hours and finally got some foreigner who check the application numbers. He said that everything was in order and that they were in process.

Hoping for a total of about $850,000 after Wednesday.

Definitely, every mismanaged state and their pension is looking for a bailout after this, once they know they won't get one, suddenly bureaucrat jobs are on the line and America reopens.

Biden will give every state government a multi trillion dollar bailout that has noting to do with Corona if he's elected.

And absent future revenue they couldn't rehire those workers. And absent those workers votes... I wouldn't be surprised if the union heads called them as well and gave them an earful.

Yep, you don't typically see cases where Clarence Thomas and Ruthie Ginsburg join sides against Alito and Kagan, but here you have it. Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion.

The case is going to create a lot of new work for criminal appeals lawyers in LA and OR. Gorsuch pretends that the holding is simply a new criminal procedure rule, and since those can't be used as grounds for appeal in collateral review, then this ruling will only affect a few hundred criminal cases where the appeal is still pending. But the opinion clearly states that a unanimous verdict is a substantive constitutional right, so every criminal who was convicted by a less than unanimous jury would be a fool not to file a challenge.

Anyway, more work for lawyers, and more taxes for OR and LA taxpayers to fund the state lawyers. Yippee.
