Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Government: Ain't It Grand! Authoritarian And IncompetentThis is heartening news...pushing back against the jack-booted, religion-hating thugs in government is always a good thing, especially when it sounds like the restrictions placed on religion are capricious. And by "capricious" I mean viciously anti-religion, pro-progressive, and antithetical to everything this country stands for. Chattanooga church sues city for banning drive-in servicesThe lawsuit claims the city of Chattanooga violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments and there is no justification for banning drive-in services.Extending that tortured logic just a bit...so people stuck in traffic jams are also violating that order? And how about people in line at the drive-through windows of fast-food joints?"The City and Mayor have specifically targeted churches by banning drive-in services, despite permitting packed parking lots at retail establishments and drive-in restaurants."This stems from a post by Mayor Berke ahead of Easter stating that, "drive-in services . . . even in their cars with the windows rolled up, for any length of time will be considered a violation of our shelter-in-place directive." This is amazing. New York's corrupt hack mayor is also an incompetent and ignorant boob. I guess you can include Bloomberg in this tarring, but I prefer to go after de Blasio, because he has been particularly vocal about others' failings, and even more vocal about how wonderful a job he is doing. How New York City's Emergency Ventilator Stockpile Ended Up on the Auction Block The city’s department of health, working with the state, was to begin purchasing ventilators and to “stockpile a supply of facemasks,” according to the report. Shortly after it was released, Bloomberg held a pandemic planning summit with top federal officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, now the face of the national coronavirus response. In the end, the alarming predictions failed to spur action. In the months that followed, the city acquired just 500 additional ventilators as the effort to create a larger stockpile fizzled amid budget cuts. Even those extra ventilators are long gone, the health department said on Sunday. The lifesaving devices broke down over time and were auctioned off by the city at least five years ago because the agency couldn’t afford to maintain them.de Blasio was elected in 2013 and took office in January of 2014, so this falls squarely in his venal lap. This jackleg has consistently made the wrong choices with just about everything, and it is only because of the laziness, stupidity and machine-politics mindset of NYC that he isn't a vapid backbencher, or even more appropriately, in jail for his underhanded dealings with his handlers in the real estate industry. And...a belated hat tip for the church article to Buck Throckmorton. Oops. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Isn't it funny even if "red states" but there is a Democrat Governor or Mayor (that pretends to be moderate or conservative) it's like the first thing they go after is people going to Church and try to shut down religious services. So I was thinking (no, I didn't hurt myself...)
The country is currently in the process of testing people who think they may have SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19. These tests are coming back around 10% positive. (?) Which means that 90% of people who have symptoms that make them think they have the virus, do not actually have the virus. Now, think of the CDC recommendation for counting COVID-19 *deaths*... CDC recommends to count *everyone* who dies of similar symptoms of COVID-19 as a COVID-19 death. So that means that even though testing is showing that only 10% of people assumed to have COVID-19 actually have it, 100% of people assumed to die of COVID-19 are being counted as having COVID-19. That is a MASSIVE over-count of deaths. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 19, 2020 12:10 PM (Do5/p) 16

Can I comment on JJ's sidebar post - "it now appears that the overall U.S. death rate this winter season is at a multi-year low". Of course it would be - stay at home orders, no one driving, no one is transmitting flu at work, school, and nursing homes are now under tighter protocols. I am not sure what point JJ is making there. If it was not the case, if it was handled differently, we would have had more deaths. It's like saying hey, the patient lived, we did not need to give him meds, after he was given meds. If anything, lower death toll stats support the stay at home. It is also plain logic - no interaction, no communicable diseases.

In the EMT, someone mentioned the CDC doing studies for "racism" and "gun control". And it got me thinking of how politics has basically infected every area of every industry. Hollywood/entertainment, schools, universities, journalism that has nothing to do with politics, etc. And, because of that, people aren't actually focusing on their actual jobs. They're too busy infusing their political opinions into their non-political jobs. Imagine how much better schools and universities would be if they were focusing on mathematics instead of SJW-ism with mathematics as an afterthought. And how much better the CDC might be if the people hired there were actually doing their damn jobs to protect people from infectious viruses and diseases instead of going off in the woods on side jobs dealing with "racism" and "gun-control". It's amazing how much is fucked up in this country due to people not doing their damn jobs. We need more Bill Belichick's in every industry to get their people to keep their damn focus: "DO. YOUR. JOB." Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 19, 2020 12:16 PM (Do5/p) 43

Huge (and wrong) assumption that all negative results are truly negative. Standard tests for basic viral things like flu and mononucleosis have tons of wiggle room in the results; both false positive and negatives.
This is why mass testing is almost always a bad idea. It tends to replace common sense and it reduces the ability of people still using common sense to get the care they need. Unless the disease is one where you go to sleep healthy and wake up dead, mass testing tends to overwhelm real cases with false positives. And to a lesser extent means denying service to false negatives; the more tests, the more false positives and negatives. People tend to be surprised when they find out how high the false results rates are in medical testing. This allows you to look over longer periods of time than right now or even last 50 days. And mass testing for those without a negative flu test and fever for 3 to 4 days is waste of time and money. Used correctly, models aren't incompetent. They
make predictions based on the best available data. If the data is lacking, the model can't be trusted, but that's the job of the person using it to point out. Reliance on a model that lacks sufficient data to provide a useful answer is incompetent. Posted by: pep at April 19, 2020 12:19 PM (T6t7i) I ran various computer models for 20 years. Fair enough. But in order for me to accept the model hypothesis that we're all gonna die even with closing the boat ramps in rural West Virginia because NYC is infested, I need that hypothesis to hit within 10% or so. I might allow 20%.
Adjusting the hypothesis after 99.91% of people don't die isn't how things work. Well, okay, it *is* how modern Science! works, but you know what I mean. I left NYC for LA, and now CT, eight years ago. In my time in NY, I lived through the mayoralties of Robert Wagner, John Lindsay, Abe Beame, Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Rudy Giuliani and Mike Bloomberg.
Looking back at those city leaders, Rudy was the outlier. Everyone else - including Koch - was varying levels of awful. Bloomberg managed the decline with a degree of competence, but by and large NYC was a terribly managed place. What they've largely gotten since Rudy was a slow, painful, reversion to the mean. Even now, with De Blasio's no good, very bad, terrible stewardship as mayor, I don't think anyone there can see a successor to him. If he ran for mayor for another term, there is no reason to think that he would lose, even with the lemmings in NYC knowing what they do now about him. I'm so glad I'm no longer a New Yorker. Gov Cuomo just had his daily press briefing at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research in Manhasset NY (or Long Island. Their facility is at the base of "Spinney Hill" Which was Jim Brown (the legendary NFL running back).
https://feinstein.northwell.edu/ They will be doing antibody testing. This is the kind of testing Dr. Birx has been droning on about at the daily Cornavirus briefings. The type of testing that she said they had one million test kits ready to go, they just needed the dumbass governors to use their high capacity machines and not focus entirely on whether the person currently has the virus. Of course that means he needed to get his head out of his butt and listen when Dr. Birx told him what was available. It seems someone has smacked him upside the head with a 2x4 and he will now get the testing needed to re-open New York State. POTUS will have a field day at today's White House briefing. How can we trust in God if the Church does not? Huddling in fear and not resisting this awful attack on faith is disheartning. I pray God forgives us...
Okay- I'm a Catholic , so ymmv. Church didn't "close". Priests were still offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass daily. Just without a congregation, which they are allowed to do. We have precedents for this in plagues, for centuries. Priests are still hearing necessary confessions and administering other sacraments, as needed. Right now, this is a pause in ordinary parish life. If it turns into something else- we have examples for how to deal with that, as well. Posted by: Sal at April 19, 2020 12:55 PM (bo8pf) 169

I applaud these pastors for defying the government by holding church services. Not sure the Catholics could do drive throughs but it sure would be nice if we could at least gather in our cars to pray in one place. Our Archbishop has closed down Masses because he fears the elderly (i.e. the faithful who show up every Sunday) would not take his permission and stay home. The trouble is, when does it end? When will he feel it will be safe enough to open the doors? This is when we need Holy Mother Church the most. All of a sudden!, there is a whole bunch of new-found criticism of the foibles of STEM and its practitioners. I'm shocked.
Amid all the extra rabid vitriol being expended on the old Humanities Departments, at least a couple have realized that it was dick-dribbling on the part of fully credentialed Scientists who drove us off this cliff. In fact, the Resistance that has sprung up here in the last week? Are thinking like a bunch of English majors. There, I said it. If the Big-Power Science complex had been able to deliver what nine out of ten regular folks thought they were in charge of, there would have been effective treatments, maybe even a cure, with the scope of a two-week quarantine. All the rest of this bitchy belly-aching and wishing for grandpa to die quicker is just a smokescreen for the total failure of Big Science. Hardly a day passes when I don't read in the paper how Cuomo is "showing Trump how it's done." i even lost a FB friend over this when he extolled the virtues of Cuomo's briefings as opposed to Trump's. It's mystifying. Posted by: JoeF. at April 19, 2020 01:20 PM (CqE5x) This. There are plenty of people who think Cuomo is doing great, Trump is a failure all the way around on this, and the success of a governor is based on how much of the state he or she has shut down. They dislike Trump that much. Oh, and Michelle Obama is going to start reading stories to kids on PBS on Mondays. Why do I have a feeling that either PBS didn't offer that to Melania or she turned it down because she knew it would be unjustly politicized? Also partly that if they do have to shove him aside whoever replaces him does so knowing that whatever "team" has been assembled by that point is getting passed on to him or her. Remember 2008 when in the days after the election the media was demanding Bush should just let Obama and Company take over right then instead of waiting for January 20? Para 7 of the ProPublica, a far Left leaning rag, reads in part
The COVID-19 crisis has exposed the national stockpile as poorly maintained by the Trump administration and far too small to meet the competing demands that have predictably poured in from many states as the pandemic hurtles across the country. Indeed, some of the ventilators in the stockpile suffered from the same problem faced by New York -- they fell into disrepair. Para 8 is busy hammering on Bloomberg's reign, when he was 'a Republican'. No moar quoting of it, cuz it is as slanted as I figured it was. Thomas Frieden is pointed at for part of the blame, without once noting he's a Dem (and a graduate of Oberlin College, no less). Lack of federal grants, cuts to Medicaid -- Yeah, they spread the blame game around liberally, so to speak. This is Gell-Mann amnesia in a single article. Pure garbage. Orthodox Easter takes place on a Sunday, but the date is governed by a rather complex system that is determined by three primary conditions: It must be based on the Julian calendar, not the Gregorian calendar that Roman Catholics and Protestants follow; it must be after the Jewish holiday of Passover; and it must be on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox in late March. There are years when the two Easters coincide, and then there are years when Orthodox Easter occurs one week later. (I do not know whether it could occur two weeks later.) Our scout troop has to take this into account because our current sponsor is an Orthodox church while our previous one was a Protestant church. Our regular meeting nights occur on Thursdays. We always have had to plan to meet somewhere else on Maunday Thursday because there is / was a service that evening. When all is said and done, it will be the subways (and buses). You can track the route the virus took by the subway. Read something this morning about how the longer you were on the subway--the more stops, the more people were coming on and going off the train--the likelier you were to get exposed--and with a bigger viral load. Add to that, the people who HAD to work took the subways. There's your African-American over exposure. Posted by: JoeF. at April 19, 2020 01:58 PM (CqE5x) 351

It's like Biden cut a deal with the Devil back in 1988 when he ran for the first time. "Yes, Joe, you WILL be the Dem nominee - but not this year. 32 years from now - when you're too old and mentally feeble to know what's going on."
Speaking of mentally feeble, why isn't the DNC furious at their primary voters the way the GOP establishment was pissed off at Trump voters in 2016. Assholes like Kristol attacked the base in 2016 for supposedly choosing an unelectable candidate. Dems chose a stick of wood that occasionally makes noises and yet I don't hear anybody bitterly denouncing them as dolts and saying "Jeez, not only would Bernie have been better, even Beto and Indiana bum boy would have been better. At least they can form complete sentences!" Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V at April 19, 2020 02:07 PM (d6Ksn) 366

I missed the task brief meeting yest, and the thread, but I watched it before bed.
Trump was VERY disturbed. He seemed distracted, and reflective. He mentioned him keeping the US out of war with the Norks, and touched on consequences for China. To me, it seemed he had just come out of a meeting with very bad news. This was very disturbing. It bothered me that the press did not seem to notice and did not ask him. Now maybe my past experience with similar personality types helped, or maybe I am nuts, but it was very obvious to me that he was unhappy and for cause. Some in the thread said he repeated himself too much, but that was a sign of distraction. Usually he does this when he is tired or bored and just needs to answer, but yest. was different. Tucker said that the intelligence community is near unanimous that the bug came from a lab. So they are telling him and trying to get it reported. I wonder if they are doing that because they have another shoe to drop like it was part of bio weapon research, or that the US can not avoid serous consequences on china. Miles Gao, on Steve Bannon seemed to be saying it was deliberate act of war, but it was hard to understand him and he may have been talking through his hat, but the whole situation makes me wonder. I do not think it was deliberate, but I am having a hard time thinking that the US can avoid serious action against China, and China will retaliate by invading neighbors and things will go to bad places. I do not think it was deliberate, but I am having a hard time thinking that the US can avoid serious action against China, and China will retaliate by invading neighbors and things will go to bad places. --- What we know of China's internal response suggests to me the release was accidental and they didn't want anyone knowing the research was going on. But while they shut down internal flights to get it under control, they let international flights continue, while their plant at the WHO insisted there wa no real problem. Those actions deliberately caused the deaths of people around the world, making it an act of war even if the initial cause had been in the wet market. How we respond, since a nuclear exchange is undesirable, is an open question, but the fact is they hit us with a WMD first. The problem is, the nonviolent response Trump appears to be leaning towards, bringing the manufacturing home and ending trade with China, is not terribly dissimilar from steps we took to shut down Japan's oil supply in the days before Pearl Harbor.
