More Anecdotal Evidence That Chloroquinine Is Effective; The FDA is to Blame For the Six Weeks of Delay in Coronavirus Testing
It's just an anecdote: His immune system might have been on the verge of beating the drug without chloroquinine. In the same category is this woman's quick recovery.
"I'm happy to report that my progress has continued and I feel practically back to normal," Kim said. A bit later he explained that one of the first questions he was asked when he announced his illness was "What medicines did you take?" After giving a brief disclaimer that his is not a doctor, Kim said he was prescribed a cocktail of drugs including tamiflu, the antibiotic Azithromycin, an inhaler to prevent inflammation, and hydroxychloroquine. "And here’s what I consider to be the secret weapon: hydroxychloroquine," Kim said. He continued, "This is a common anti-malarial drug that has been used with great success in Korea in their fight against the coronavirus. And yes, this is the drug that the president mentioned the other day. It is also the drug that Dr. Anthony Fauci cautioned us about. "He said that evidence that the drug is promising is anecdotal and that is correct. It means it wasn’t studied and is only based on personal accounts. Well add my name to those personal accounts because I am feeling better."
They note the French study which prompted all this optimism consisted of only 20 people given the chrloroquinine/azrithromycin combination. (Another 20, I think, served as a control group who were not given that combination.) That's obviously a small sample, but still, as anecdotes accumulate they do become data. Meanwhile, it turns out that Orange Man Bad was not responsible for the delay in coronavirus testing. The FDA refused to expedite approvals for the test, despite a national health emergency having been declared.
She had been ill since March 8, toughing it out through fatigue, a cough and fevers that brought on vicious chills for five evenings straight. Finally, on March 15, she went to an urgent care center and, on March 16, to an emergency room.... "I couldn’t breathe," she said.

To that point, Novins had been a pneumonia patient for three days, treated mainly with antibiotics. But within an hour, a new drug was added to her med list: hydroxychloroquine, a decades-old malaria-turned-autoimmune drug, also called by its brand name Plaquenil... Novins' responded to the treatment. She was better, though surely not well, the next day. "The fever," which was still spiking when she was on other meds, "is now gone, which is fantastic," she said on Saturday March 21, coughing at times but able to speak.

At the same time, this stuff should be used on every dying patient unless there is a clear conflict with their physiology or other medicine. I mean if they're gonna die, the side effects seem pretty minor in comparison.

You might already have it. According to experts, maybe 50% of people are just not bothered by it at all. Another 48% or so get it but its nothing beyond a nasty cough, fever, congestion, etc. The death rate seems to be >1% and this stuff seems to be effective on it.
I'd call that pretty decent odds. I mean a condom fails at what, 4-6%?

I believe now, at this point, we have tested more people than South Korea. ~270k tests just last week.
I'm not entirely sure how much better off we'd be at this point with testing... *maybe* if every traveler coming home from Europe had been administered the test... but that seems a tall order with the amount of travelers arriving back every day.

The chloroquinones?
There have been three on the current mess, Korea, China, and France. The Chinese study used higher doses, the French study used hydroxychloroquinone (fewer side effects) and an ER/chicken antibiotic and got STUNNINGLY GOOD results if they can be replicated on larger scale.
The main thing is that these drugs have almost no adverse side effects, the worst thing is vision problems that resolve once you're off the drug. And they're all, including the chicken antibiotic, cheap.
There's some consideration that the virus will mutate itself around the immediate cure, and that's true, but at this point a year probably gets us to a virus.
I'm optimistic.

Its not impossible that it interacts oddly with this particular virus in some people, that's what they are worried about. There hasn't been enough testing yet to see that kind of thing. There's been some done that demonstrates effectiveness, but not a large, wide-spread clinical test.
The problem is that we don't have time to do that kind of testing and sooner or later you gotta work the odds.

Relax, and make sure you take care of your hands too. If you wear latex or nitrile gloves, you can wash the gloves instead. I do that when cooking when I am chopping raw vegetables and working with meats. I wash the gloves multiple times as I switch between the veggies and meat.

Sure, but not with this stuff. Medicines interact chemically, and there's not enough data on how exactly it interacts with this virus. It appears to be very beneficial but are there nasty side effects we haven't seen yet? That's their fear. I think its pretty groundless -- or if not groundless, than excessive, given the circumstances -- but that's what they base their restraint upon.

I don't know if its the test or the virus, but they keep getting really weird results like positive, then tested again negative, then later positive again.
But the reason for the push on testing is to ramp up numbers, to frighten people and drive policy. More positives = more panic, even if the death numbers don't go up or are even going down.

What really matters about Yellow Bat Fever: how many people are going to have be hospitalized at any given vs how many hospital beds are available. And of that subset, how many are going to need ICU and ventilators to keep them alive vs the supply of those.
That's the only stat that matters.
NYC has turned out to be the first hotspot for this. It's gonna be an early test compared to the rest of the country. We'll know in about two weeks how bad or not this going to be.

At first we had the case where Death numbers looked really bad because they were ONLY able to test people who were really sick.
So you suddenly have it in everyone's brain that this has like a 10% death rate, when in actuality its much much lower.
But now we are testing people who have less symptoms but are not really in danger of dying so we have more total cases.
but that high death rate number is still in peoples heads, thus the panic.

Yeah most of the panic (even in otherwise educated, intelligent people who should know better) is being driven by early information. Early estimates on infection rate, early ideas on how long the virus survived on a surface, early projections on spreading, etc.
All of it was wrong and sometimes excessively so. All of it has driven the response since then without any moderation or change based on changing data.

I was listening to some respiratory doc talking about this last night. Z-pack has some clinically significant anti-inflammatory properties that are not well understood in addition to the antibiotic properties. The x-quinines, which are used for RA and other autoimmune conditions have anti-inflammtory and immune modulation effects.
He speculates that the ones that get the sickest may have be having an immune overreaction in the lungs causing the damage and all that, and the above properties of those drugs may explain their effectiveness.

Wider spread also means more mutations ... so letting it go "viral" or feral in a community is also unwise. Isolation is difficult, recovery may be slow.

That's the thing, when their states are still on lockdown and others aren't and are doing fine, their citizens are going to get mad. They don't want to deal with that and they're too inept to make the case to their people that the conditions warrant it.

I've got RA, and had to stop taking the infusion (immune suppressing biologic brand named "Simponi Aria") for my knee replacement last month.
I should be able to start taking it again with the go ahead from the surgeon this week, but I'm not going to until this thing is over.
And I already had a little flare this morning, reminding me the RA is ramping up again. I'll deal with flaring RA, rather than a suppressed infection fighting ability.

according to Resident 3vil, my personal clinical pharmacist, among other things that have been discovered is that treating lung inflammation with steroids, which is standard therapy for that sort of things had worse results than not using the,, likely due to further weakening of the immune system.
azithromycin also has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as some anti-viral ones, despite being an antibiotic.
i suspect we will know more about both after all the data is crunched in the AAR post panic.
