If he wants to hold the plaquenil for the very sick until we have more, I can get that. The "prestigious" journal The Lancet has a bunch of really embarrassing articles (in retrospect) from February and March dealing with travel bans, citing international law. They either sound like Chinese propoganda:
"Third, the practice of blocking traffic and lockdown of villages is of no value for the prevention and control of COVID-19. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, some countries have suspended flights to and from China, and prevented Chinese people from travelling to their countries; both of these actions violate WHO International Health Regulations. Similarly, in community prevention and control of the disease, the measures taken by individual villages and communities to seal off roads are of no value. Such measures could result in civil unrest and reduce compliance with infection prevention and control advice." or Social Justice Warriors: "Some countries argue that they would rather be safe than sorry. But evidence belies the claim that illegal travel restrictions make countries safer. In the short term, travel restrictions prevent supplies from getting into affected areas, slow down the international public health response, stigmatise entire populations, and disproportionately harm the most vulnerable among us. In the longer term, countries selecting which international laws to follow encourages other countries to do the same, which in turn undermines the broader rules-based world order. 88 By the way the Chinese reacted to Trump shutting down travel, one would almost think they were actively trying to promote the spread of infection to the US...
I've seen more than enough evidence that this was exactly the case. now, I don't know if all the Chinese who did this were aware of what they were doing. and I don't think this was anything other than a terrible accident releasing a bio-agent - but once they realized it was out, the PRC decided to "spread a little love around" Posted by: THE_BlackOrchid_STATE! at March 20, 2020 02:43 PM (j9HX3) 106

Remember that the Chinese, after they knew the virus was highly contagious (because their own health care workers in Wuhan kept getting sick) lied to the WHO and told them that the risk of human-to-human transmission was very low.
And WHO then repeated the Chinese lie to the world. But "stupid" Trump put the Chinese travel ban in place anyway. So who was really "stupid" here? The WHO, which believed and repeated the Chinese government's blatant and dangerous lies about the virus, or Trump, who erred --rightly-- on the side of caution and probably saved many American lives in the process? Of course that's what's tee'd up. This is not worse than H1N1, except we are in the process of destroying our economy. So when this is over and the MSM looks at the number of deaths and then looks at the unemployment numbers of which will be a substantial number in the broadcasting, communication and entertainment business, they are going to try to create the narrative that this was a massive over-reaction. it's a killer Posted by: THE_BlackOrchid_STATE! at March 20, 2020 02:47 PM (j9HX3) The lessons to be learned here are legion. Stockpile medical capacity (gloves, masks, gowns, ventilators, anti-virals, etc.), early travel restriction protocols, market rules governing short-selling (such as the uptick rule, perhaps), Congressional stock selling disclosure requirements, and so on. Personal lessons abound, too. I learned that we never developed a vaccine for SARS after the 2002 outbreak, and SARS-COV-2 has about 70% genetic similarity with SARS-2002. We never prepared medical capacities to deal with such a national threat, either, apparently. If we don't know by now, China (or Africa, or Mexico) will spawn another one of these. It is a matter of time. If we don't take this opportunity to prepare the country, all the sacrifice will have been for naught. How did Taiwan keep from having to close schools or shutting down cities?
Travel bans. https://bit.ly/2wqXDAr How Taiwan Countered Coronavirus Despite a Lack of Info While Taiwan could not rely on Beijing to provide timely and accurate information, it also received little help from the WHO. The WHO bowed to Beijing's demand in stripping Taiwan's access to the WHO since 2016. The Wall Street Journal reported, "The WHO has held two emergency meetings since the coronavirus outbreak. Taiwan wasn't permitted to attend, despite its proximity to China and its handful of confirmed cases." Consequently, "Taiwan often must rely on secondhand information relayed by friendly governments and nongovernmental organizations" to manage its response. Not receiving any guidance from the WHO turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Taiwan. On Jan. 20, three days before Beijing decided to lock down Wuhan and three other major cities comprised of 60 million residents, and 10 days before the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a public-health emergency of international concern, the Taiwanese public health agency officially activated the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC). The CECC was established during the SARS outbreak in 2003, and one of its main responsibilities is to coordinate viral-containment efforts through various governmental agencies. The CECC's swift actions included imposing travel bans of Wuhan residents as early as Jan. 23, increasing funding and production of masks and starting the mask ration system before the public had a chance to hoard, and providing daily press briefings to reassure and educate the public while fighting misinformation. The most impressive action regarded how the CECC used technology. An entry quarantine system was launched Feb. 14 so "travelers can complete the health declaration form by scanning a QR code that leads to an online form, either prior to departure from or upon arrival at a Taiwan airport. A mobile health declaration pass was then sent via SMS to phones using a local telecom operator, which allowed for faster immigration clearance for those with minimal risk." By Feb. 18, all hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies in Taiwan gained instant access to their patients' travel histories. Not surprisingly, the CECC's transparency and decisive measures have received a more than 80 percent approval rating from the Taiwanese, and the public isn't panicking. The Taiwan government has also been able to keep its businesses and schools open while continuing measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus. President Tsi Ing-wen saw her approval rating increase from from 56.7 percent in January to 68.5 percent in February. When they attacked the US for blocking them, it was a continuation of their malicious bio-invasion. This is a Psy-Op War, whether the bio part was intentionally initiated or not. Given the market and jacking the top rate to 13%, I can see that figure - as I believe its an auto deduct from tax collections. I said this morning: You will see a commercial in 2024 or 2028 highlighting Newsom and his "leadership" to lock down the state. "Showed courage. Leadership. BS" that why we need to elect him president. The numbers just play into the commercial. Projected X infected. Lockdown. Not infected. Bingo. Lockdown saved us. 20 new deaths today so far, yesterday there were 59 to take us to 209 after yesterday. It has been "exponential" the last week or so.
Day to day may not mean much, but if the 20 today ends up being 40 for all day ... it means a decline in the rate of increase for the first time since the acceleration phase got rolling. Even if there are 59 today, that would indicate a slowing. But that is me hoping these drugs are working, and social distancing helping. Guess I wasn't clear.
I'm not saying the 25 million # for CA is to be doubted because all estimates are sometimes wrong, and also not a Virus Truther about the general situation. Just pointing out that the number is wildly, wildly in excess of any # yet bandied about (% wise) for spread of the virus. Wildly so. I think it's even way beyond the already dubious #s generated by the model allegedly being used (at least in part) by CDC, the one from the British institution. Meanwhile, I've seen no "offical" info/guidance in CA closing any particular businesses other than the bars and restaurants, a few other types, that were included in the very first restrictions (and carry-out still OK). So I guess it's mostly "implied" - if a business/job is considered "non-essential", then by implication, you "shouldn't" open it/do it. Mention it only because I saw two liquor stores open this morning on my short errand. Posted by: rhomboid at March 20, 2020 03:21 PM (El6T/) 361

Roosevelt called Big Bill Knudsen, then head of GM, not long after Dunkirk, to come head a war production board.
The the shock of his board, company, and family, Bill said yes, immediately, on the phone (a different America). Knudsen got the ball rolling on converting industry to military production - at this point, to re-arm the US and to provide support to the UK. He later was bumped out of that position but took up a similar one for aircraft production at the (brand new) Pentagon, and was the highest-ranking civilian given military rank (brigadier general). Knudsen wasn't *too* much of an awesome American success story. Immigrant, worked as a stevedore (was a boxer then too), ended up helping invent modern assembly line production at an auto factory in Buffalo, and quit his job as CEO of the world's biggest corporation (as noted, instantly) to respond to a president's call for a national defense effort. What was the big news in China last fall? Massive Hong Kong protests. How do you shut down protests without looking like the bad guy? You convince the protesters to stay home. How do you do that? Well, a dangerous outbreak would do the trick since you can not only convince people to stay home, you also have the excuse of issuing quarantine orders. Release the bug in a wet market hundreds of miles away, give it enough time to travel, shut down anyone who happens to notice before it's had enough time to spread, then when it does you mobilize the military in a massive and public show of force to scare everyone, and then release fudged data to say whatever you want it to say. Voila, no more protests. A western overreaction that wrecks their economies is the cherry on top. And only a handful of people would ever have to know.

Java: "Chances are the market and employers will be raring to go after this lets up."
While true, some (and probably too many, sadly) cannot survive this shutdown of commerce. So some not insignificant number of businesses will go bankrupt. Big business will cope and have lobbies with which to scoop up resources. Anything smaller than that, though, will be disadvantaged. This is not a flip-of-the-switch type scenario. That's what's so infuriating. Politicians can turn things on and off on a whim more than a business operation that must have cash flow and business systems with predictable outcomes. Abrupt lurches will destroy businesses. Posted by: AnonyBotymousDrivel at March 20, 2020 03:41 PM (6eEQ+) 438
