Apocalypse Fatigue: Why Won't At-Risk Boomers Panic About the Wuhan Virus?
[Buck Throckmorton]

In the past week, a story that keeps getting written and re-written by young journalists is the stubborn refusal of older Americans to panic about the Wuhan Virus. Pretty much every story reads: “Why is it that a healthy young American like me - in the demographic most likely to survive Coronavirus – is panicking right now, while my Boomer parents/grandparents, who are highly vulnerable to death by Coronavirus, refuse to panic or radically change their lifestyle?”

Here are just three examples. No need to click – they all read the same.

BUSINESS INSIDER: “Frustrated Millenials Say They Can’t Get Their Aging Parents to Cancel Their Cruises, Stop Going To Church, And Take Coronavirus Seriously”

VOGUE: “Why Are So Many Baby Boomers in Denial Over the Coronavirus?”

BUZZFEED NEWS: “How Millennials Are Talking To Their Boomer Relatives About The Coronavirus”

Although I’m a little too young to be considered a Boomer, I am over 50, and I’d be glad to explain why the over-50 demographic is not panicking in the fashion that our young, know-it-all journalists would like. It’s simple. We’ve been through a lifetime of media-hyped hysterias and apocalyptic predictions. If not complete hoaxes, they were falsely reported or over-hyped. Here are a few:

Overpopulation and Global Famine: This was promised not just globally, but domestically too. We were supposed to have run out of food and descended into global starvation a long time ago. All the experts agreed.

Day Care Center Child Molestations: This hysteria sent many innocent people to jail. Local and national media fanned the flames with accounts of “numbers growing daily” and videos of anguished parents. It was a fraud perpetrated by highly credentialed “experts” who believed that pretty much every child exposed to an adult had been molested. The children just needed help remembering it. Those of us who saw through the hysteria were muzzled, because to question the veracity of the hysteria invited accusations that you too were a child molester. It was like Salem in 1693. The bravest journalist I’ve ever read is the WSJ’s Dorothy Rabinowitz, for daring to unravel the terror and how it spread.

Killer Bees: We treat it as a joke now, but we were promised an invasion of swarming “Africanized” bees that would kill livestock and children. It was soon going to be unsafe to even go outside in the southern US without thick layers of protective clothing. All the experts agreed.

Killer Mold: Toxic mold in the ‘90s was kind of like radioactive waste, only deadlier. Or at least that’s what the media had us believing. The terror of discovering mold in schools was met with media alerts, school shutdowns, and local TV stations filming panicked parents as they picked up their crying children, just moments before the tikes were engulfed by the attacking mold.

Global Cooling: A “consensus of scientists” assured me this was real, and that its impact on agriculture would probably lead to my death by starvation.

Global Warming: According to “scientific” predictions from yet another “consensus of scientists,” the Arctic should now be ice free, snowfalls a thing of the past, and New York’s West Side Highway under water.

It goes on and on. Acid Rain. Peak Oil. Ozone. Alar Apples. Y2K.

Maybe the Wuhan Virus is finally “The Big One.” But after decades of the media fraudulently screaming “APOCALYPSE IS IMMINENT!!!” it is not irrational for Boomers to dismiss the latest hysteria. In Aesop’s fable about “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” the moral of the story isn’t that the townsfolk should have believed the boy, the moral is that the boy shouldn’t have destroyed his credibility by falsely screaming wolf time and again.

Thirty years from now, the millennials who are currently aghast at their parents for not panicking, will themselves be jaded by decades of hysteria, and they too will be just as skeptical of “Apocalypse 2050!!!.”

Should seniors – and everyone - be super vigilant about hygiene and sanitizing right now? Absolutely. But should they engage in hair-pulling hysteria as demanded by young know-it-alls? Of course not.

8 Well, I personally know a few older Boomers who have never really accepted their age, and thus their vulnerability to this type of virus. Maybe there is some of that famous "forever youthful" attitude that some Boomers are known for.

That said, no, this is not the end of the world.

45 Sharp take.

Older Americans have been immunized against panic. Also, the CDC, which has not been adverse to inciting panic, reports a total of 171 deaths from sea to shining sea. We have been told the number of dead would escalate dramatically dead this week. Older Americans also can read.

I'm not so sanguine about these snowflakes, though. Over the last few years they have just veered from panic to panic, some of it over blatant hoaxes, and never paused. Apparently if social media says it is time to panic, panic.

Once we were down there they shut off the lights, and we had to stay silent for about fifteen minutes in the dark while the air became stifling, and damn near unbreatheable. We had CONELRAD (sp?) civil defense spots on television, H- bomb preparedness, Bomb shelters, and an air raid siren every Saturday at noon.Que up the remainder of the list just posted.

She already had a larder to see her through the apocalypse, because when you've been through what she has you understand that bad things can happen to good people and you plan accordingly.

96 Should seniors - and everyone - be super vigilant about hygiene and sanitizing right now? Absolutely. But should they engage in hair-pulling hysteria as demanded by young know-it-alls? Of course not.

Not hair pulling hysteria. My parents need to stop going shopping every day like they are used.

My mother is a chronic shopper. If she runs out of milk, store. Something is on sale somewhere, store.

Luckily stores are starting to close around them.

I am thinking they have been through a lot, too. My dad on a sub in the Navy during a more recent war. My mom raising 6 kids during all of what they witnessed.

Which is fine. I'm not pulling hair either. I just want them to do the most simple things right now. They have been saying for weeks "it's not around here." It took a doctor to tell them to stay home, but that didn't last long.

My dad has been going through multiple bouts of cancer. After going through chemo to kill one, he is on meds for another. I think he's in the YOLO mode.

I just don't want to lose my parents, so I'm a bit selfish here.

Rant: My God, we get it! We get it! Please stop repeating every God Blessed thing! Repeating the same instructions and warnings again, and again, and again, and again, and again is NOT HELPING!!! It is annoying as all get out! If you don't have anything new to say just say "We have nothing new, we will let you know when things change and then take the opportunity to just SHUT THE HECK UP!
We'll get through this, it isn't the end of the world, and you aren't going to get a medal or special recognition for sending out the forty-fifth memo saying "Remember to wash your hands" - you may get a response you were not asking for.

108 Risk?

Pfffft.

Hey, when I was a young kid, we spend at least once a week in first grade practicing "duck and cover".

It was pretty much common knowledge among my second graders that the Russians were going to drop atomic bombs on our cities. Our worst fears were confirmed in 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis.

And our older cousins and neighbors knew a real virus - the polio virus - that would mysteriously cripple some kids and adults while missing others completely.

So pardon us baby boomers for not getting all worked up for some lousy Chinese virus. We've seen much worse, and lived through it.

But there was never a blizzard or a power failure where we had a problem, even holed up for days. Like all things, "prepping" can be done to excess but it is also reasonable to lay in some supplies for a bad event. I am bad at this myself, in part because of space (I have little).

The docuseries pushed the need for the Gates' Foundation to receive funding to carry on virus research to prevent the next PANDEMIC!

Bill Gates funded the Wuhan lab in China that released the Wuhan virus. Bill Gates' was a member of China's Academy of Sciences who built the lab and he was awarded their highest honor.

The Wuhan virus was originally developed at the University of North Carolina by NIH grants approved by the Obama administration in 2012.

The NIH defunded the UNC research in 2016 so the Communist Chinese scientists left UNC and took their work to the NEWLY BUILT Wuhan lab in 2017 - funded by Gates & pals.

The head of the Harvard Chemistry department, with ties to Gates and Epstein, was arrested for accepting bribes from the Communists. Did Epstein know what was coming?

The Pirbright Institute, funded by Bill Gates, owns the "patent" on the Coronavirus genetic sequencing. They did simulation testing on a global PANDEMIC in 2018.

Bill Gates and Barack Obama docuseries marketed the need for a global "universal" vaccine to replace all other flu vaccines. I believe it will be designed to deliver a human chip via nanotechnology.

12,469 people in the US died of H1N1 flu (from Mexico) under Obama in 2009, many of them children, because he waited 6 months to do anything & never closed the border.

The media said nothing about fatalities from H1N1 but is creating a huge panic around the 20 US deaths from the Wuhan virus to destroy the US economy before the election.

Over 36,000 people in the US have died from the common flu this year and the media says NOTHING about that - but is creating a huge panic around the 20 US deaths from the Wuhan virus.

18 out of the 20 total US deaths from the Wuhan virus have come from a nursing home in Kirkland, Washington - the home area of Bill Gates.

Half the staff at that nursing home have been infected with Wuhan virus. They appear to be the carriers. The nursing home draws employees from a large Chinese population across the border in Canada. I believe Gates is placing carriers in vulnerable locations for the narrative and funding.

Right after the first deaths were reported in Bill Gates home area, the Governor declared a national emergency and Congress approved over $8 billion - even though Trump asked for only a quarter of that. Much of the funding will flow to Gates' global partners.

Suddenly Bill Gates says his "foundation" will offer in-home testing kits where you swab your nose with a Q-Tip and send it to his labs. How convenient!

19 out of the 21 who tested positive on the Princess Cruise ship were CREW MEMBERS. Meaning the crews are carriers and are infecting passengers. Who put them there?

The virus started in South Korea because the leaders of a "doomsday" cult went to Wuhan, China and went back and infected 8,000 of their members. Who paid them to do that?

Iran's leaders suddenly became infected after Iran's foreign leader met with John Kerry in Munich and laughed about the virus on camera. Almost like he was told to go home and create panic.

All those videos out of Communist China of them disinfecting the streets, people dying on the streets and thrashing bodies - were all fake and sent out by Communist propagandists.

Real videos show Hong Kong freedom fighters being rounded up in handcuffs and sent off to the "hospital" where it's likely their organs are harvested and they are cremated.

Real videos show elderly people in Communist China trapped in buildings and left to die with no food.

Real videos show that Communist China installed major NEW surveillance cameras and technology to monitor people on the street & in their offices since the virus was released.

Real videos show the Chinese people yelling "IT'S ALL FAKE" from high rises as the Communists pretend to care for them on the streets below.

They are now forced to use an app which tells them when they can come and go and tracks their every move. How did the Communists suddenly develop this technology in a month? This was part of the plan.

After Trump closed travel from Communist China in January, the Chinese blamed the US and threatened to hold back our pharmaceuticals unless we opened travel back up again. They didn't expect him to do that - that thwarted their plans to seed the US with more cases.

I believe the virus is no more dangerous than the common cold - but has been engineered to be highly infectious and impact the elderly and sick. Thankfully, it is NOT affecting children and young adults like pandemic flu does.

I believe the virus was unleashed by the Communist Party to scare people back into their homes and stop the Hong Kong and Taiwanese pro-freedom protests.

I believe the virus was unleashed by the Communists to crash the US economy and drive people away from Trump rallies.

I believe the virus was unleashed to help the Communists assert global control and to cull the elderly and weak.

ALL respiratory viral outbreaks peak in March and end in April. I believe this one too.

The SARS Coronavirus panic dropped the market 20percent in March 2003, under Bush, and it came roaring back even higher by July. In other words, they've done this before to a Republican administration before an election.

Now the fake news is trying to distance Wuhan from the virus -- and so is Communist China. That means we're right over the target.

Every single one of my statements has been reported by numerous sources. This is not a conspiracy. This is real.

THIS.

I keep thinking of our parents who lived through all that and how they would get us through every damn scare the press threw at us growing up. What breaks my heart is to see the fear in people that is out there right now.

Yes, let's be cautious, especially around and for the most vulnerable, but let's not stop living.

Growing up, one of our neighbors used to lament how soft younger generations were. Any time she heard someone worrying about current events, she would tell them to , "Stick your thumb up your a-- and deal with it."

BREAKING: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has introduced legislation to provide as much as $1,200 per person and $2,400 per couple in the U.S. amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Saying lawmakers won't go "anywhere" until they take action, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday introduced legislation to provide as much as $1,200 per person and $2,400 per couple in the U.S. amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The draft legislation, obtained by Fox News, would provide minimum payments of $600, and aid would be phased down at income thresholds of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple. Additionally, there would be $500 payments for each child.

The rebate amount is slated to be reduced by $5 for each $100 a taxpayer’s income exceeds the legislation's threshold. The amount is therefore reduced to zero for single taxpayers with incomes exceeding $99,000 and $198,000 for joint filers. The IRS will determine income based on taxpayers' 2018 tax returns.

246 I am a full fledged Boomer. I was born in 1950. So far, I see no reason to panic. Everyone likes to point to Italy and the deaths there. May I point out that Italy has been deluged with low hygiene and low IQ invaders from Africa for some time now?

BTW, even before the Wuhan, Italy's health care was not great. I spent 6 days in a tiny village hospital in Fivizzano. I had vertigo after a fall in Paris. I was ready to leave the hospital after the second day--because I was so much better. However, my watercolor workshop host refused to let me come back to the property--a 16th Watermill because of his insurance.

In that hospital:

* No AC
* No screens on the window--bees flew in and out all day
* No phone or TV
* When my family, the travel insurance folks, or the American Embassy called about me, the switchboard would say no patient by that name and hang up
* No hospital gowns (which was nasty because I had thrown up all over myself. They eventually brought my luggage and so I had my nightgowns and robe. BTW, I would hand wash those nightgowns and hang them out the window to dry.
* No emesis basins--they would just give me one of those blue pads to barf into
* No soap/washcloths/towels--they would give me a starched/ironed bedsheet to dry off with. Lucky for me, I had my own soap.
* My cell phone had no bars because a tower was down. Strangely enough, my Kindle always had bars, so at least I could get bars.

I refer to that time as my Little House on the Alps adventure.

So, if you think Italy was a modern country fully prepared to deal with Wuhan, you would be wrong.

I remember in the 70's (being a huge car buff) reading that we'd be completely depleted of oil by 1999. This was pretty much consensus, again. I remember thinking damn, I had really planned I should be making enough money by then to buy my Jaguar, and I'd get to drive it for a year or two before we were forever out of gas?

And of course, the Population Bomb. Gas didn't matter, because by the turn of the century, there would be billions of people overrunning the planet. Famine, disease, war were all inevitable as we plunged into a new stone age.

The long forgotten Summer of the Shark in 2001 is one I often use as one of the purest examples of a media hysteria made out of whole cloth.

Not saying this is like those but of course we are not going to freak. The modern version of young people think everything is new and unprecedented. The press tells them this every day and there is no reason to fact check it.
We grew up with the Cold War. They grew up with everyone trying to outdo each other on social media and get clicks and likes. Of course the default is hysteria.

276 Q. How can someone become offended that another person isn't panicking properly about a disease, while also making every effort to deny where, geographically and politically, the disease actually originated and spread from?

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at March 19, 2020 05:34 PM (tLWGd)

Panics can be helpful, though.

Taking Y2K as an example, one of the side-benefits was that the whole world had to scrap their old computers, and get new ones with upgraded microchips and operating systems. That ended up setting the table for us to have world-wide networks of servers that provided the backbone of the cloud that we all know and love right now.

The Great Wuhan Coronavirus Scare could get us to do several things:

1. When we finally get the all-clear to out of our homes, it can dramatically increase the value of personal interactions over virtual ones.

2. We will finally reassess the ways that our children learn. Yes, state-funded daycare does have its advantages, but there are a lot of tools out there that can encourage life-long learning, and learning outside of the traditional box for our kids (and adults).

3. Society is more than just government doing things for us. We will look at the bartender, waiter, grocery clerk as more than just a provider of a service, that we impersonally transact for. These are people that make livings, buy things, support families. If it brings us closer to acknowledging what all levels of society do for us, we'll ultimately prove Margaret Thatcher right about what a society really is.

4. We'll think about whether the highest and best use of corporate profits is to buy back one's own stock at artificially inflated prices, only to have nothing in the larder when the poop hits the fan and people get laid off. It's insane that not only do people not have more than a couple of weeks savings to tide them over, but corporations as well. It's an eye-opener.

5. The grand experiment in willy-nilly globalization will be judged to be a failure. Trump will be shown to be a Cassandra that people will end up actually listening to.

There are probably many more that we can't see right now, but this is a huge opportunity for us.

This is not a joke or an exaggeration.

I have seen it with my own eyes.

A couple of years ago, I witnessed a small group of friends meet. One guy was very upset. Said he almost died. Friends said WHAT!?! One friend, a girl, said "didn't you rent a car and drive into the Cascades over the weekend?"
"yes"
"what happened?"
"I was way up in the mountains, on a gravel road, and I got a flat tire. My cell phone had NO BARS! It was starting to get dark, and luckily a pickup drove by and saved me!"
One guy, who I later heard he grew up in Montana, spoke up after a few seconds of silence, said "Um, why didn't you just change the tire?"
Kid freaked out, shouting "I'm not a mechanic! I don't know how to fix cars!"
The rest of the crowd, mostly women, laughed out loud at him.

These were young Amazon employees, for what it is worth.

This is the world we live in today.

Example: a friend of mine and I changed a tire for a girl when we were in high school. It went fine.

Another example: a different friend of mine and I went to a movie. It was snowing. He left his lights on. We got out of the movie theater to a dead battery. We got a jump from a friendly lesbian couple and headed off. He drives down to the mall, parks outside of Sears, and turns the car off. My other buddy and I asked him what the hell he was doing. His answer: "the battery died. I have to go get a new one."
It took my other friend and I 15 minutes to explain the basics of an alternator and rechargeable batteries. He didn't entirely believe us, but took us at our word when the car started back up (barely).

384 Me (Gen X): This is another in the long line of WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE hair on fire screaming from AllTheExperts (TM). I had to read The Population Bomb in college, circa 1989. My professor assigned it as a warning to not believe the crap you read. Probably the LAST university professor to encourage a healthy skepticism in students.

My mother (Silent Generation): She's 84. She says she's lived a good life, and if this is it, this is it, better than spending years in a nursing home unable to walk or feed herself. She also told me that if God had really wanted her, he would have taken her by now. Other factors: my father is dead, all her brothers and sisters are dead, some of her nieces and nephews are dead, all her old friends are dead, and every time she makes a new friend at her retirement living situation, they die too.

I think when you come from a generation where your elementary school classmates died, on a regular basis (I grew up hearing about how mom and dad's classmates died from diptheria, polio, unexplained illnesses), you're a little more stoic about death. Also, it has never crossed my mother's mind to doubt that God and heaven are real. It definitely crossed my dad's, but not hers. She's ready to go whenever it happens, whether it's corona virus or a car accident this afternoon.

Statistically speaking, the odds are high that someone out of the pool will win the lottery. The odds of any particular individual winning are vanishingly small.

And the expected value is negative, anyway (save in some crazy cases). To put another way, the state is the house in the lottery, and it's far from a fair game.

The mob used to run lotteries all the time. It was known as the numbers racket. Don Corleone would never think of taking as a big a cut as the state takes out of the pool.

550 McConnell has once again defined the rich as a couple making more than $198,000 a year. I have relatives who are hard working couples with blue collar jobs that make more that.

He said the relief would go to the middle class. So if you make more than that, I guess you're rich- right?

Once again "the middle class" gets to foot the bill and then gets it up the squeakhole when checks are being handed out.

Yeesh. The Mini 14 from 1980 has a lot of design flaws and Ruger didn't give a crap about quality control. The action moves, the barrel is too thin and gets whippy, and the stamped front sight often damaged the crown. Even bad Ruger magazines caused issues. Not to mention Ruger's headspacing on the Mini 14 was different from one rifle to the next.

Trump said the words, but Slough and others like him don't want you to read the transcript.

Here's the "hoax" language, "They tried anything, they tried it over and over, they've been doing it since she got in. It's all turning, they lost. It's all turning, think of it, think of it. And this is their new hoax"

But thirty seconds later Trump said, "And so far we have lost nobody to coronavirus in the United States. Nobody. And it doesn't mean we won't and we are totally prepared. It doesn't mean we won't..."

So it's a hoax, but Trump says we're prepared and some people might die? Maybe, just maybe, Trump wasn't lying later when he said he meant the media's reaction to it was the hoax and not the virus.

604 "We're all gonna die!!!!!" they shriek.

Well, yeah. Too bad about that. But we all understand that every living thing *will* eventually die, including each glorious, unique, and special one of us here on the blog. However, most of us aren't going to die from "This Current Media Orgy of Doom-Porn".

So yes, after a certain age --when our parents are gone and our pets are gone, when a good many of the kids we went to school with long-long-ago are gone-- we might indeed turn a little fatalistic and decide we don't want to be stampeded by the repeated alarums of the MFMSM.

Ultimately it's up to each of us to evaluate the risks and benefits of our individual choices, with due consideration given to how our actions might affect those around us.

Probably the closest guideline I can come up with is: "Don't be stupid; don't be selfish; and don't be a puppet." Of course, YMMV.

612 Oh, so Trump was being nuanced when he said the virus was under "tremendous control." That warm weather in April might kill it. That cases would go down, not up. He didn't say the virus was a hoax, just the left-wing hysteria about it.

It's obvious what Trump was doing. He was lying, going against his own scientific advisors, in order to save Wall Street. Trump is in the travel business as much as he's in any business. This has hurt him and he had many financial reasons to hope this would blow over. But the Chinese had those same financial reasons to do the same. In both cases, it's the same dishonest, anti-scientific thing.

But don't claim he took this seriously when you, right here, are not taking it seriously.

China didn't take this seriously. And for that we can blame them. But those of us (hint, you) that are still not taking this seriously are not among those who should be pointing fingers. You are part of the same, anti-scientific problem.
