Rand Paul's Annual Airing of Festivus Grievances

Those tweets below.

Also amusing: This Christmas' hottest merch is "Epstein Did Not Kill Himself" sweaters and ornaments.

Following the August death of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, a rash of sweaters, Christmas tree ornaments and other holiday goods have appeared on retail sites like Amazon and Etsy touting conspiracies that the 66-year-old was murdered.

"Christmas lights are a lot like Epstein -- they don't hang themselves," reads one $19.80 sweater on Amazon featuring the 66-year-old in a Santa hat. Plenty of ornaments also include the allegation, including this one, which also features a noose.

"During Christmas, an elf may sit on a shelf, but Epstein didn't kill himself," says another Amazon sweater, available starting at $29.99 in eight different colors.

This is amusing:

32 This is an example of why I like Rand Paul... He obviously doesn't like PDT very much (as a person or a President) - but he's not a backbiting little bitchy #NT cunt.

He calls him like he's sees 'em, supports the President where he's right and hits him when he's (as Paul sees it, anyway) wrong. In public. Like a man.

Instead of, say, blindsiding him while he's mowing his lawn, which is roughly equivalent to much of the GOP leadership's behavior toward PRESIDENT Trump.

I think the comments render, then the Twitter embeds come in. So when you refresh, it actually does go back to where you were, but then jumps around as the embeds render and all of the relative positions change.

The longer you wait to refresh, the less jumpy it will be. If you rack up 25-50 comments (maybe more - there is a lot of Twitter in this one), it will end up landing you right back where you left off because there is more below your position than above it.

So, update on women - girl who I was getting along pretty well with (went on 3 dates, had 4th planned) leaves me a hurried voicemail last week - her dad is in the hospital so she's flying out to Florida tomorrow. Says that last time this happened she was down there for months, so figured we should just end things. I told her to at least give me a ring when she was coming back into town.

Went on a first date last night that went well, except that when she found out I live with my folks she went cold. We talked it over and she said it's not a deal breaker, but it sounds like she's going to make me jump through a lot of hoops just to prove I'm "self-sufficient" so I dont forsee this working. She's a black girl and a friend of mine told me this isn't uncommon in that community - guys who dont live on their own are seen as scrubs/busters/etc.

Posted by: joe, living dangerously at December 23, 2019 03:19 PM (KUaJL)

Yes. It's because when the page first loads the tweets are all just text and the twitter embed imagery take a second to load. So it jumps you to where you left off and then loads all the Twitter stuff so it pushes it down farther. It's less of an issue when there are a large number of comments posted between refreshes.

121 Just want to thank all who replied to my concerns on the prior threads.

After reading your responses, I'm getting the picture that the incident that occurred last night is our govt doing what it does best: going all Bully Boy on a pretty harmless but obviously sick man.

It's the same old story. Local LE just kicks the can down the road. The guy who was SWATted should have gotten treatment long ago, but the police never had him committed. So they drew up a plan to rain down hell on him the next time they got a report of an incident, no matter how minor.

In so doing they inconvenienced and frightened an entire community. Meanwhile, warnings given about legit threats such as the Parkland shooter went unheeded. It doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling that our law enforcement apparatus is now operating in a topsy turvy back assward manner.

One problem, IMHO, is that as jobs consolidate in cities, you have more young folks competing for limited housing. This is exacerbated by the growth in "luxury" apartment complexes that cater to twenty-somethings who can rely on mom and dad to help with the rent.

I don't know the specific incident you're talking about. But we had something in my hometown recently that was similar.

Dude was a lunatic, he refused to pay his taxes, which is cool by me, but he was also completely crazy. When our braindead local Sheriffs came to evict him, they did their typical thing of being a bunch of dolts who thought dressing up in SWAT gear made them to Universal Soldiers, and entered the place with no tactical plan at all. They do this kind of thing ALL the time, for anything.

They did the same thing with a guy I knew who was frowing *four* measly marijuana plants.

I'm thinking the local yokels were afraid of a similar outcome to what your locals experienced. That's why they called in reinforcements.

The guy they went after did have a history of being belligerent when he was off his meds. Otherwise he went to work every day and was competent enough at least to keep his home after his dad died. I don't know what precipitated the incident where they went and got him.

My BF will find out from his neighbors. He did say he thought he heard gunshots after I spoke to him last. So maybe the paper reported it correctly when they said the dude shot at the cops.

But if he really had shot at the cops, would they have taken him alive? I don't think so.

Prayers for your parents.

Grandma had dementia and was starting to have trouble when about a year ago she suffered a series of strokes and ended up in hospice. She survived, and grandpa and my aunt moved her back home (they lived down the street from my aunt and uncle) and brought in some nurses to help grandpa care for her. It caused a huge rift in the family (mom was initially opposed) but turned out to be the right thing, IMHO. Grandma spent her final months in somewhere familiar, and I think it was good for grandpa as well, even if it was stressful.

And on trade. He opposes tariffs because he's a free trader.

That's fine, I am, too - IF and only if it is reciprocal. Tariffs for pure protectionism are stupid and cause dislocations and massive inefficiency. Tariffs wielded as a policy tool against bad-faith trade partners or to offset the unfair advantage posed by trading partners that have no property rights and slave labor are a different story.

Not all tariffs are created equal. I don't know Paul's opinion on the "policy tool to achieve a set objective" approach to tariffs. Based on what I do know, he is a free-trade purist and doesn't care about asymmetry. That is my key disagreement with him.

But I'd still vote for him several dozen times before voting for Romney, for example. I think Paul is wrong on free-trade fundamentalism but I also think Paul is basically honest. Honest goes a long way.

It can be damn near impossible, depending on the market. If you take the "old math" (that is, the safe math), you need to have 20% down and keep it to within 3x gross income.

The median "home price" (which includes condos) in the Denver area is $450k according to Zillow. So by the "old math," you'd need $90k in cash and a gross annual income of $150k to afford the "median home."

That is a damn sight more than median income or median savings.

As cantankerous as Pat Buchanan often is, I am reminded of his arguments in "The Great Betrayal": that a government funded by tariffs was a lot more libertarian than one funded by income taxes.

And back then, the "big government" types wanted lower revenue maximizing tariffs, the revenues often going to the 19th century versions of public works (National Road, Transcontinental Railroads)or to the military (Great White Fleet).

I agree with Tubal about respite care for yourself if you undertake caring for your parents.
I didn't when I was caring for my folks when dad had cancer and three years after getting my mom on a somewhat even keel.
I didn't live with them but was there every day.
It's exhausting. No hospice back then either.

I am still dating the navy submariner guy with kids. Like him a ton, and his kids. But he is moving glacially slow in the affection side. We have not even kissed yet. He had the perfect opportunity last night. We were snuggling on the couch, kids asleep, playing audio book of wheel of time series. I looked up at him with big eyes, hoping he would lean down and kiss me, and he never did. Bah!

I bought mistletoe in a box as part of his Christmas present so he gets the hint. And he is socially obligated to kiss me at New Years, right?

You get it.

I work in IT. I used to be an enthusiast, a hobbyist, etc.
For my entertainment, I built some little home-theater PCs for the TVs. I got home from work one night and it wasn't working properly.

I realized, in the midst of troubleshooting (yes, I fixed it), that I wasn't an enthusiast anymore. There was no joy. I just wanted to watch some damn TV.

I rebuilt the whole system and moved over to Rokus for everything I do TV-wise. There is some computer infrastructure sitting behind it, but it is almost entirely hands-off and just runs. I check in on it once in a while to make sure the wheels aren't flying off.

There is a lot to be said for "turn it on and it behaves the way you think it should" simplicity.

My outgoing Rep (Mac Thornberry, TX-13) is like that. He might still be listed as being from Clarendon, but he lives and works in DC now. Once he retires from Congress at the end of 2020 I wouldn't be surprised if he stays out in DC instead of returning to the TX Panhandle. Now, I can think of far worse than Mr. Thornberry, and on the whole, I like him - but he has been seduced by the Swamp, and he lives there now.

295 LizLem, tell him you've heard about ADCAPs, and ask him if he could initiate firing point procedures.

298 257 Y'all with the aging parents, I salute all of you. Having done my own time in that department I know all too well what you're signing up for. It's the most tragic honor you'll ever have. It's a joy you'll never forget and a sadness you'll never regret.

Been there, done that. It can take a few years off of you. I would do it again in a minute.

Anyone else have the problem with the HQ where if you reload the page
when there are a bunch of twitter links it doesn't keep your spot on the
page?
Very few of the keys that ought to move you up and down do work correctly here. In particular, try scrolling to the end (End key) and then going back via repeated use of PageUp. The first press of PageUp sometimes works. The rest do nothing.
I assume this problem is in the Minx software -- which does what minks do.

300 Grandparents - parents are dead.

They need a lot of help around the house - and also, it's a nice house in a convenient place for me work-wise and I don't need to pay rent. I'm very used to it and averse to change. But they'll probably need to move to a nursing home soon so I'll buy getting a different place, I can't live in that big house alone.

The youngest boy in my family stayed in the family house with my mother. I think being a support for your parent is showing responsibility rather than irresponsibility.

301 Adding to the articles before sending them is actually admitting that Mitch is right. How can he make rules and call witnesses before there are official charges?

If the articles can be added to, then they are not official and final, therefore rules cannot be set forth. If she does add to them, it is actually a sign that she knows the deal is up, and she needs to send everything they have right now.

If they change the articles in any way they should be revoted by the full House.
