Weekly Standard Shuts Down

There's a lot of whining by NeverTrumpers that this is terrible because we need dissenting voices in media, and the closing of the Weekly Standard means that we must all "kneel" to one rich arrogant man's ego.

Well, you know who might agree with that? Lee Smith, who was fired -- purged -- from The Weekly Standard last October immediately having offered them an article exposing FusionGPS, the firm that Bill Kristol hired to try to take out Trump and Cruz, for those who like to forget that last name.

I know a lot of NeverTrumpers pretend they were Cruz supporters but funny, when I was supporting Cruz, I didn't see them anywhere near me. They were taking snarky shots at Cruz and seemed to be rather enamored of Ruuuuubioooo.

Anyway, Lee Smith offered a rich (well, at least he lives richly off other people's money) arrogant man whose ego cannot bear to hear any dissenting voices a story about the company he paid (or rather, used his donors' money to pay) for dirt on Trump and Cruz, and was canned.

I have repeatedly brought this up and I have not seen a single NeverTrumper, or one of the people eulogizing this magazine which supposedly fostered a spirit of contrarianism and dissent, so much as mention it, let alone condemn it.

So to all of those Weekly Standard people upset about losing your jobs -- Lee Smith lost his job last Christmas (he was fired in October, but generously paid through Christmas), and none of you said a goddamn thing.

If you want some advice on how to recover from an unexpected firing, write me and I'll give you his email; he went through all this (and is still going through some of this) himself. Maybe he can help.

So spare me. As usual, you're all in favor of deplatforming and scalphunting, so long as it's people you don't like being deplatformed and scalphunted.

Another claim being made is that there were buyers but mean old Clarity Media put an end to that.

The grossly fat John Podhoretz, for example, wrote "There were buyers. Potential buyers." But he claimed that the search party for buyers was told to stand down in September.

So that Clarity Media could strip The Weekly Standard for the few assets it had which were actually valuable, like its subscriber list.

Dealing with this one at a time:

Obviously, potential buyers are not actual buyers. Or we'd just say "buyers." So once again, we have a cuck claiming that there were "buyers" but then when you ask, "so why was it not bought?," they start talking about potential buyers.

Well, Kurt Schlichter is a potential buyer. So are commenters here, who talked about putting together an IndieGoGo buyout fund.

But none of this is serious, is it?

Furthermore, Hayes and his search party were permitted to seek buyers for months, and found none. Further beyond that, whether or not they stop actively looking, People have known that TWS was buyable since the search began. They could have made offers at any time.

They didn't. Because there are no buyers. Just... potential buyers.

Lastly, this shit about Clarity wanting to shut down an unprofitable, money-losing biilionaire's vanity project and recover something valuable from it:

When you decide to rely upon the kindness and generosity of a billionaire donor, and are not actually profitable -- when your "business model" is to be a charity forever -- well, sorry, but that means you have an Audience of One. If Phil Anchultz thought that his Vanity Project was no longer boosting his vanity, because, let's say, it was a moribund, low-influence afterthought, well, you lost your audience of one.

You were being kept afloat to make his estimation of himself larger; if you produced dreck, and precious little of it to boot, that's on you.

Next, and finally: This idea that if the rest of the magazine is failing and valueless, but one aspect of it has value (the subscriber list), then it is immoral and terrible to "strip" the company for its "assets:"

Isn't this part of the cycle of creative destruction of capitalism you defend and claim is central to conservative identitarianism? Wasn't the candidate you loved in 2012, Mitt Romney, a practitioner of just this sort of wring-inefficiencies-out-of-the-market-by-breaking-down-nonperforming-companies-and-selling-their-useful-parts capitalism?

You're not very good capitalists if you suddenly start whining "Oh no, capitalistic profit-seeking and inefficiency-eliminating hurts when it happens to you! No fair, no fair! Make the bad men stop!"

You guys can't talk like Gordon Gecko when it's someone else getting a pink slip but then whine like Michael Moore when it's you.

There are bad guys here -- but they're not Clarity Media, who kept this sinking ship afloat with bales of money for a long time.

The bad guys here are the ones who purged dissenting voices, spiked any story that wasn't explicitly anti-Trump, resulting in a relatively low amount of product on offer and usually the same repetitious product again and again and again (Jeryl Bier's 6000th toss-off "column" on how Trump coarsens civic dialogue! YAYYY!!), and refused Larry O'Connor's common-sense recommendation to have some stories that actually commented on current news to increase traffic (and oh yeah -- he got fired too, because Steve Hayes was too good for "clickservatism").

Steve Hayes kept the august Weekly Standard completely free of clickbait headlines.

Steve Hayes, the brave warrior at the gates saying "NO" to thuggish "clickservatism"

And oh yeah, the magazine also constantly baited and insulted Trump voters, also known as 88% of the GOP and 75% of the Weekly Standard's former subscriber base.

And oh -- staffers participating in what sure looked like a paid political operation against Salena Zito -- an actual colleague of the Weekly Standard (well, a fellow employee of Clarity Media, at the Examiner). Apparently for daring to be not explicitly anti-Trump.

That was swell.

Did Jim Swift receive discipline for participating in the coordinated political hit on a colleague? Or was he permitted to do it by his supervisors?

Or was he... ordered to do it?

Who knows. There are so many Pierre Omidyar-funded ops going it's hard to keep track of them all.

And oh right -- nearing the end, the sudden zealotry with which the Weekly Standard's staffers defended the honor of George Soros, accusing his critics of being antisemites.

Say, doesn't he have a lot of money he's willing to fund anti-conservative ventures with? He does? Wow, what a coincidence that at the end, the Weekly Standard turned into George Soros' PR firm.

And oh yeah: Going on an expensive hiring spree -- landing the scary talents of THE Charlie Sykes, for example -- while the magazine was already melting down financially.

He had three wives and nearly as many fans.

Take ownership of your failure, Bill, Steve, and John. You put people out of work for Christmas through a combination of ego, obsession, and heedless incompetence so rank it reaches the levels of true immorality.

One final voyage, into irrelevancy

54 I was going to make a joke about the Fall of the House of Krystol, but when I went and looked up at the text, I literally only had to substitute "Krystol" for "Usher" and nothing else:

"DURING the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Krystol. I know not how it was --but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. I looked upon the scene before me --upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain --upon the bleak walls --upon the vacant eye-like windows --upon a few rank sedges --and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees --with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium --the bitter lapse into everyday life --the hideous dropping off of the veil."

90 I know a lot of NeverTrumpers pretend they were Cruz supporters but funny, when I was supporting Cruz, I didn't see them anywhere near me.

The only one I can recall offhand who actually supported Cruz was Nordlinger. He actually chided Mona for living in "a Marco centric universe." I was surprised at just how completely NT he went.

I know the rest of the NRO #NT brigade were either hot for Dondi or flirting with someone else. I know Goldberg was very critical of Ted until he had to grit his teeth and pretend to back him. And he didn't even hide his dismay at that.

Maybe French was pro-Cruz. I don't remember.

I do recall pointing out that, after endorsing Cruz, they didn't run any articles making a case for him. I got a ton of upvotes, but they still were clearly lukewarm.

Seriously, kudos for your righteous rages.

What most of the right needs to understand is that corporate America is out to destroy them and repopulate the U.S. with a cheaper, more controllable workforce. They ain't your friends and while they may make common cause with the right from time to time on things like taxes, they ultimately despise Average Joe and their demands for ends to corporate welfare, fair trade, controlled immigration, etc.

They are using dark money to buy "conservatives" media and plant "stories" through cutouts like Global Fusion. They institute destruction of institutions like the BSA or churches by threatening to withhold money and investments.

They buy our politicians and promote political apathy as nothing seems to change. They hire shills and trolls through cutouts to promote their sorry asses on social media. Their controlled puppets in the media, think tanks, and academia promote all sorts of corporate welfare in a time of massive debt and deficits along with promoting illegal immigration that makes deficits and debt worse. They are termites undermining the West and its existing peoples to what end, I do not know. But I have my suspicions.

"I'm a faithful follower of brother John Birch and I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church and I don't even have a garage you can call home and ask my wife".

I've never really looked in to the Birch wars. I know that Buckley stood athwart history and yelled stop. I know that modern conservatism was born in the bosom of Barry Goldwater, but he had to run against JFK's martyred halo.

I know that Barry AuH2O was best represented by Ronaldus Maximus in that speech two weeks before the election.

It's weird that it only took sixteen years for Reagan to get elected. That seems like a trifling bit of time now. At the time it was a forever.

My favorite bit of recently learned WFB trivia, btw, is that English was his third language.

This.

People pointed and laughed at the antediluvians who protested against liberal initiatives, and blew off their predictions of dire outcomes.

Turns out that the antediluvians were absolutely right, in fact, were unduly sanguine about things would turn out.

For my part, I now have antennae that quiver uncontrollably on encountering those making earnest arguments about how doing something idiotic (e.g., legalizing drugs) would solve some problem, based on an unrealistic utopian vision.

It won't. Their proposal would accelerate the decline into a dystopia, and can be recognized at a glance merely from the earnest way the argument is made.

Posted by: DocJ at December 14, 2018 12:41 PM (NYS7S)

That's rubbish. Buckley DID NOT excommunicate the JBS. His denunciation was directed specifically against Welch, and explicitly did not attack the membership as a class. Welch calling Ike a communist was just too embarrassing.

I have to point out that, in 1964, Goldwater was every bit as despised as Trump is today. If you want to see what the stylish "thoughtful conservatism" of the day was like, read Peter Viereck. He was like a smart version of David Brooks. And he denounced the denunciation, and NR generally. He was the guy whose reviews made it into the NYT.

Too many people are buying the lies that Jonah Goldberg sells about the early days of conservatism. Note that NR continued to publish people like Kilpatrick. They supported South Africa, and even Rhodesia.

328 So was National Review getting "donations" as well as the cucks at TWS?

Seems likely.

While I was staring at their articles agape in disbelief at their championing Hillary over Trump because......something, was it "muh principles?" The ones they never defined while insisting that the election wasn't "binary?" Because there is absolutely no reason EVER for an actual conservative to push the far left, and they never gave a reason, only bullshit feelings that they never could support. The actual definition of conservatism is standing up to the Left, and they were doing the absolute opposite.

The only explanation for a nice girl spreading her legs for a monster is either that she's getting paid so much she can't refuse it or is being blackmailed where she fears for her life.

I'm guessing cash.

Usually the point of buying a company is to retain it as a brand ... and then keep the customers "Now under new Ownership" ... or some such, or maybe just slide along with the customers not even realizing there was a change.

So it seems clear there was little interest in paying up for the battered old sellout name, since that is what they had done to the brand.

There was nothing "Boston Brahman" about his accent. It was sui generis. (He actually learned English as his 3rd language, and mostly in England.)

But that's a symptom of what I hate about this talk. It's all impressionistic, with no underlying basis in reality. People just don't like Buckley for stylistic reasons, and equate his style with that of Never Trumpers (who admittedly are trying to imitate him.) But it's all a big myth.

It makes as much sense as loving Trump just because of his style, and ignoring the policies. It's pure rage, SJW-style.

My dad's favorite flavor was Coconut when I was a kid--and I didn't get this at all. Coconut was always okay for me, but it's only after 40 that I understand the desire for Coconut. It's impossible for most people who never advanced beyond Little League to imagine just what it's like to face someone with MLB stuff. When Bob Feller was in his 60s he'd make appearances at Indians minor league games and challenge ticket holders to try and hit his heater. They all got blown away until one of the guys on the farm team went into the stands in street clothes, came down and started hitting them off the screws off a confused Rapid Robert while the guys in the dugout howled.

483 It's fun to embarrass people with,

Oh, what policy position does X hold that you disagree with?"

They then try the style, impression, feeling thing again.

You repeat, "I'm sorry, what POLICY POSITION do you have problems with and why?"

Invariably, they'll say something stupid about some policy they don't understand and you get to stomp them.

Of course a few times, I've been reduced to just saying Policy position, policy position, policy position.

Invariably it turns out to be infanticide again.

So I get to say, "Oh, so you're morally superior to someone who thinks babies are human." Got it.

Doesn't seem like a real strong position to me.

I'm a grandmaster of what they call "Tonal control." Most people -- almost all people, in fact -- have a distinct "literary style" that is as unique as their signature or handwriting, and as automatic and unconscious. They just write the way they write, and can't change it -- and aren't even aware that it is in any "style" at all. (This, in fact, is how they caught the Unabomber -- the feds asked the public if anyone recognized the literary style of his "manifesto" -- and his brother saw it and realized it sounded exactly like the way his brother Ted used to write. Ted himself off in his cabin had no idea that he was even writing in a "style." He was trying to be untraceable and neutral.) Anyway, a small percentage of people are not only self-aware of their stylistic "tone," but have the ability to alter it if desired. I think more people could have "tonal control" if they spent time peering at their own words and then practiced writing in different styles.

They're really both the cause it their respective institutions' decline. Conservatism doesn't need this feel good message any more than Christianity needs it. People want to hear the Truth, and when the Church or Conservatives stop trying to offer the Truth because they're afraid it will push people away, then people leave anyway.

None of them will have to worry about working again in their lives, while their employees look for jobs during Christmas. The Weekly Standard is a lot like politics, it was mostly a grift for cash.

573 A few more points about WFB:

He NEVER stopped arguing that, despite his flaws, McCarthy had the better of his enemies. He even wrote a book about it (with Bozell, Sr).

He was instrumental in the defeat of Lowell Weicker, who made Jeff Flake look like Jesse Helms. In fact, he was part of the movement that destroyed the full open Republican Left. (Lindsay, Rockie, even George Romney.) Since then, they've all at least tried to pretend to be conservative.

His anti-communism was as pure as the driven snow. He was pretty harsh on Ike on this score.

He wrote of academic bias and indoctrination - and kept Kirk doing so in NR - long before even Allan Bloom, let alone today's writers.

He really did upset the cultural left. They couldn't bear his mention, without denouncing him, as today they do Trump.

What he DID do was sustain a forum (NR) in which there was a genuine diversity of right wing opinion; something that doesn't exist today. It was Lowry who killed that.

I could go on but I expect this to be willowed.

He didn't respond well.

577 I'm a grandmaster of what they call "Tonal control." Most people -- almost all people, in fact -- have a distinct "literary style" that is as unique as their signature or handwriting, and as automatic and unconscious.
Posted by: zombie at December 14, 2018 01:36 PM (c+2jX)

Respect.

I had (and have probably) the hardest time expressing myself the way I intend to in little gray boxes here. Writing fiction, I can try on different 'voices' but I still tend more towards the terse and staccato over the ornate and verbose. I struggle to alter that for pieces that need a different voice. It isn't easy.

599 A Saga Sort of Continues:

Trump sits in the Oval Office talking to the little furry guy.

"This is the deal, and it's a good one. Big John is going to be leaving and I'll need a new chief of staff. Now, I'm going to level with you it can be rough. I'm a man that knows my own mind, but I'm willing to listen to advice. The others - the egos around here would make a Hollywood producer look like a wallflower, and I have known many Hollywood guys. And these cats can be vicious and back-stabby. So you would need an iron will to put people away. You savvy that?"

The Ewok shakes his golden hobo cull and yells "Jub-jub-jub, jubjubjubjub! Jub!" before making a sweeping cut and then mimicking turning a roasting spit and rubbing his belly.

"That's good, you're full of moxie, kid and I like that. You'll start at the New Year. Here's an employee list so you'll know all the names."

The Golden Scalp Weasel paw-bumps with the Ewok as it leaves.

*********************************

In a Chinese restaurant in Maryland Fu Manchu sits in his office dealing with unexpected visitors.

"I already have dishwasher! He's lazy, but I will make him work." He turns to the female "You would scare away the pigeons and that would be bad for bottom line."

"Ppppppppt! Says you President Fillmore!" Nancy replies.

Chuck Schumer soothes Nancy down, giving her a Rubik's Cube to play with.

"Look we need your help. I know the Golden Scalp Weasel is your foe and he is ours. We have control of the House and I am sure I can flip a few more of those imbecile GOPes to give me de facto senate control."

"I have no money to loan to losers." He looks over at Nancy gnawing on the cube. "Or loonies."

"It isn't money - the tech oligarchs have given us free access to their checking accounts and boy howdy! I didn't think that much real money actually existed."

"Moloch!" Nancy interjects.

"No, Nancy - it's moolah. No, we need advice, this is beyond our ken. All of my cunning, my corruption, the three coats of slime I exude everyday - none of this prepared me to handle this sort of emergency. I have been denying it for months, but I am afraid it is true." Chuck leans in closer to Fu Manchu. "I'm afraid Trump means to do exactly what he said he'll do." He says this and looks around in fright, wiping sweat and slime off of his forehead.

Fu Manchu blinks twice, his face stone cold. Finally he asks "And?"

"What do you mean 'And'?"

"Is there more?"

"More? What more could be said?"

"Well, of course he means what he said! He always means things - he boasts but he makes a promise he means to keep it! Why do you think we enemies? He vowed to break China! I'm no commie but I am not seeing the Middle Kingdom torn apart by a bunch of hairy foreign devils!"

"So what do we do? A politician's word is as good as a tissue paper cat in an inferno! If people start expecting us to keep our word the Democrats will be ruined! We can't keep our promises to every identity group out there! We need to break the Golden Scalp Weasel now!"

Fu Manchu strokes his mustache and smiles an evil smile. "Okay. I come up with plan, but first you got to do something for me."

"Deal."

**************************
"Who're you kid?"
"I'm Brad, an intern at CNN, but I needed some money to fix my car or my girlfriend is going to dump me. Who're you?"
"I'm the senate minority leader. Could you pass me those rubber gloves? I don't want dishpan hands."

The climate started getting rough,
The status quo turned and tossed,
If not for the courage of staff writers,
The periodical would be lost, the periodical would be lost.
The mag lost all its subscribers when Trump won despite his style,
With Bill Kristol claiming moral high ground,
The readers left nevertheless,
Despite all of Mueller's lies
And the mainstream press
The writers are losing their jobs but with cable TV,
Well, you can guess the rest.

I used to subscribe to the NR print magazine. It must have been the late 90s when I gave up my subscription. NR actually called me, inquiring what was my problem. I told them that the magazine had become a repetition of itself. Every issue was the same thing: a rehash of all the reasons we hate the Clintons. Every two weeks: "here are some reasons we hate the Clintons"; two weeks later "these reasons to hate the Clintons are still valid"; two weeks after that "let us tell you why we hate the Clintons"; and so on and on and on.

And NR has gone steadily downhill from there. If you need to puke to force ValuRite to release its merciless hold on you, rather than shoving a finger down your throat just read Jonah Goldberg's interview with Rachel Martin on NPR "How Do Republicans Feel About The Latest Findings In The Russia Probe?"
