The potential reasons for such a decision are numerous and varied (Cuckerberg himself, giving Cuckerberg his web traffic for free, the general retarditude of most Facebook practioners, Facebook's not so outward liberalism at that time, etc). I remember thinking at the time that I really would like to have an Ace feed on my Facebook page, so I was bummed a little and I though Ace could have expanded exposure through FB.

market place and cannot easily be circumvented by alternatives.

I am normally not for inviting government interference but Facebook/Twitter/Google et al have at least as much power to censor as old time network TV did. The FTC should go after them for anti-trust violations and they should be regulated like network TV. Allowing them free rein when they control so much of the way information is disseminated is wrong.

The problem is not Youtube or FarceBook or Twatter. The problem is the internet immaturity of people. The reason that first sites keep traffic long beyond any reasonable time frame is only due to people still not reaching a reasonable level of sophistication with the internet, yet. It will probably take another decade or two. But, as of now, internet branding is gold. But they are not monopolies. The only people to blame for the power of these corporations are the customers and users who willingly give them all that power.

I've got AT and T DSL. However, they're apparently no longer doing anything with DSL. If you've got the service, you can continue to use it. But one of their customer service reps told me that they're no longer doing things like signing up new DSL users, upgrading accounts to higher speeds, etc...
Instead, they're now advertising U-Verse. You can get U-Verse TV just about anywhere. Fiber-optic U-Verse internet, on the other hand, is another matter entirely. That's apparently quite limited in where they'll deliver it to. For instance, it's available just a couple of miles away from me up the hills a bit. And they don't show any signs of bringing it any closer to me.

that is what I am saying, host your own. those companies sell excess space on what they already own, but there is nothing special about "hosting"- just a couple a servers, proper architecture, that is all.

government would be enforcing free speech, for one thing. These social media platforms gained market dominance under the pretense of fairness. Now that they are monopolies (effectively), their oligarch owners use them to shadow ban, censor, punish the views of patriots.
"Well just start another platform, and in 10 years all will be well" doesn't really work. They broke their contract, and they are publicly traded. Government should intervene, (internet bill of rights, just a natural extension) ... and lawsuits should be brought.

You are confusing Internet Service Providers with web hosting companies. You do not need ISPs to host a website, or even a web hosting company. Your own servers and a pipe in and out is all that is required.
