Finally, a comment on the cost of big government and human productivity. My husband, bless his heart, earns a nice living, for which I am grateful every minute of every day. As for me, because I followed the traditional female path of dropping out of the job market in order to raise my family, my work doesn't sell for a very high price. Nevertheless, because I'm good at what I do, when my clients need a hand, they still call on me. I accept the work, not because I want to do it or because I need to do (thank you, Mr. Bookworm!), but because my clients are also my friends and they've asked for my help.Last year, I helped a client take two cases to trial between January and the end of June. I worked 40-50 hour weeks while still caring for my household (including three teens) and my mother. During that half year, I ended up earning less than a fifth of what my husband earned for an entire year of work (with his hours ranging from 20-60 hours per week. and with 100% of his energy devoted to work, because I took care of everything else).
Because of my husband, my earnings were taxed in a higher bracket than they would have been otherwise. I also had to pay around 14% in social security taxes. The net result was that my accountant said "You shouldn't bother working. It's not worth it for you, personally, to expend the effort in order to have only about $10,000 left untouched by the government after six months of work."
One could argue that, because my husband and I together earn a very decent salary, I shouldn't cavil about the fact that our collective wealth is subject to a high tax rate. That's certainly true. But I also value my time. To work 700-800 hours - very hard, stressful hours - for only $10,000 would be a good use of my time only if I desperately needed the money (in which case I would do any moral and legal work, and consider it good). Since I don't need the money (for which I am grateful), I'm not going to work this year if I can help it.
You can applaud or denigrate my personal calculations. But let me ask you a larger, societal question about the economic decision the tax code drives me toward: Is it worth it to society if I work?

The copy-edited text of A Turn in the South came yesterday; it is such an appalling piece of work that I feel I have to write about it. This kind of copy-editing gets in the way of creative reading. I spend so much time restoring the text I wrote (and as a result know rather well). I thought it might have been known in the office that after 34 years and 20 books I knew certain things about writing and didn't want a copy-editor's help with punctuation or the thing called repetition; and certainly didn't want help with ways of getting round repetition. It is utterly absurd to have someone pointing out to me repetitions in the use of "and" or "like" or "that" or "she". I didn't want anyone undoing my semi-colons; with all their different ways of linking.
It happens that English - the history of the language - was my subject at Oxford. It happens that I know very well that these so-called "rules" have nothing to do with the language and are really rules about French usage. The glory of English is that it is without these court rules: it is a language made by the people who write it. My name goes on my book. I am responsible for the way the words are put together. It is one reason why I became a writer.
Every writer has his own voice. (Every serious or dedicated writer.) This is achieved by the way he punctuates; the rhythm of his phrases; the way the writing reflects the processes of the writer's thought: all the nervousness, all the links, all the curious associations. An assiduous copy-editor can undo this very quickly, can make A write like B and Ms C.
And what a waste of spirit it is for the writer, who is in effect re-doing bits of his manuscript all the time instead of giving it a truly creative, revising read. Consider how it has made me sit down this morning, not to my work, but to write this enraged letter.

I did grow up in a roasting marshmallows if not s'mores environment. And roasting marshmallows was serious business.
I was taught to brown the outside until it was a golden crust, peel it off and eat it, then brown the next layer. You could get 7 or 8 layers of marshmallow if you were really good at it.
I tried to teach the same thing to my kids. It doesn't work any more. You get 2 or 3 layers, tops. I read the ingredients. It's because corn syrup and not sugar.

Last fall, we smoked some jalaps and poblanos fresh off the plants and made a queso with american cheese, milk, sauteed onion and garlic. It was awesome, especially when we pulled some from the freezer in January. Not republic saving, but quite tasty.

I'll be voting tomorrow. My vote is my own but I must admit...I'm so disappointed at what could have been. I'm not interested in the size of hands, sweat, or the mob. Supposedly there's a strong candidate who is supposed to be an expert on the Constitution...unfortunately all of the leading Republican (and Democrat candidates for that matter) seem more like carnival barkers than potential leaders of the most powerful country of the world. What our country needs more than anything is a return to the values, a return to the model our founding fathers so carefully laid out for this Nation, one of limited federal powers and a return of power to the States. Reagan got it, "Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem". I'll pull the lever tomorrow hoping that the candidate who is supposed to the the champion of the Constitution survives to live another day. But I will not pull that lever again if that message is ignored moving forward. A lesser of two evils is not in my wheelhouse anymore. I'll focus my time, attention and political contributions on the local dog catcher, sheriff, mayor or governor.

That's a point. My point was more that we're getting to a point of "USA in Name Only", which throws the current validity of the treaty into question.

I really do not know. If I had to guess, I'd say it goes down? Somehow? But maybe not. If it went up, that would seem overall a net positive for the economy - lower prices, savings and investments more valuable - but I can't imagine that being the case.

Well, exactly. The very argument that the nation is doomed if the Dems put another leftist radical on the court is an admission that the court is hopelessly compromised already. That it is irreparably destroyed and no longer a valid institution. If even a minority of justices on the court are so extreme that they simply ignore the constitution, rule of law, logic, justice, wisdom, and sanity to impose their radical ideology, then the court is simply a farce anyway.
Which is just one more reason I and so many others are saying we've crossed the line and are dead as Republic. Dead.

Deflation is a decreasing price level.
Put another way, looking at the flip side, inflation means money is getting less valuable. It takes more money to buy something of constant value.
Deflation means money is getting more valuable. It takes less of it to buy that same thing.
Inflation benefits debtors at the expense of saves. The real value of the money you have to pay back is less than it was when you borrowed it.
Deflation benefits savers at the expense of borrowers. The money you must pay back is worth more that when you borrowed it.
Now, what is meant by "real value". Think of the inflation adjusted price notion. The nominal price of something....well no math was promised, I know. So forget an equation or two.
THe nominal price of something consists of two things. It's real price multiplied by a "price level" factor which represents the value of money.
Both can vary. Which make things complicated.

This seems an overall positive in the long run for the economy, though. At least for the general public, if not investors.
The money you must pay back is worth more that when you borrowed it.
I don't understand that. if I borrow money worth $100 dollars today and then pay it back worth $50 a year later, how's that worth more?
Stuff is cheaper to buy but folks don't buy, they horde and wait for their money to be worth more later.
This makes sense at the top end with investors but the general public should enjoy lower prices even if its at the cost of wages. I'm not going to stockpile my rapidly reducing dollars if the price on goods goes down, I'm going to buy. Those dollars are worth less each day, and money only has value if its spent.

M is the money supply. V is the velocity of money, how fast it is moving. P is the price level, and Q is the goods (think of this as a quantity or a real value).
Note this is an equation of state. It expresses a relation between variables. It doesn't tell you anything about causation or which way the variables will go in response to stimuli.
Now, take a differential (or time derivative, which what we're after).
d(MV) = Q dP + P* dQ
Divide through by the original equation:
d(MV)/MV = dP/P + dQ/Q
dP/P = d(MV/MV - dQ/Q
The thing on the left is the fractional change in price level. The thing on the right is the change in "monetary momentum" less the change in production/sale of goods and services (note I didn't break the monetary momentum down in quantity and velocity components, it's really sort of meaningless to do).
When that is positive, prices are increasing. That means the monetary momentum is increasing faster than production.
When negative, we have deflation, the monetary momentum change is less than the change in production/sale.
IOW, inflation is too much money (monetary momentum) chasing too few goods (dQ/Q), which is Friedman's famous dictum.

WHen you borrow $100, you must pay back $100 in principal (plus interest, which is determined by inflation expectations, but this a complicating factor).
So, you borrow $100 today. You must pay it back one year from now. In the meantime, there is deflation. That $100 you must pay back is worth more in real terms that when you borrowed it.
Hence when you're getting paid your salary, the deflation means you get less nominal dollars. But you still have contracted to pay back the same nominal amount of dollars.

Rich folks make out like bandits in deflationary cycle. They buy up hard assets and sit on them. They can ride it out and usually have the means. Great wealth can be had on longer timeline. That truly is a rich get richer deal. The proles living on a nearer timeline cannot take advantage and end up sitting on their hands, hoping to keep working and wait. Mobility is curtailed. Debt on assets can quickly invert worth.

I think it's bad because that $50 is actually worth more than the original $100.
So if you built a factory with pre-deflation debt that says you have to pay back $XXXXX to the bond holders, during deflation you would actually be paying back more than what you thought you would. And so you would have to default on the debt, destroying your credit and the factory, which is worth more than when you built it, would be sold to cover the debt.

Inflation is usually associate with an overheated economy. Deflation is associated with depressions, shitting the bed economies, with people being wiped out and jumping out of windows.
Now, we can have deflation and a growing economy (This means dQ/dt, the production is increasing with time, growth).
And we can have inflation with a contracting economy. THis latter was the 70s. They used to think this couldn't happen. You could haven't inflation and high unemployment at the same time. This was the "Monetarist" thing.
This involves the other relations, the other constraints on all the variables.
But that is the belief: Deflation bad, Inflation good, as long as it isn't too much.

I still think some moderate, slow deflation is a good thing once in a while. There's no reason prices and wages always have to keep going up. Deflation benefits savers at the expense of borrowers.
This seems an overall positive in the long run for the economy, though. At least for the general public, if not investors.
The money you must pay back is worth more that when you borrowed it.
I don't understand that. if I borrow money worth $100 dollars today
and then pay it back worth $50 a year later, how's that worth more?
Stuff is cheaper to buy but folks don't buy, they horde and wait for their money to be worth more later.
This makes sense at the top end with investors but the general
public should enjoy lower prices even if its at the cost of wages. I'm
not going to stockpile my rapidly reducing dollars if the price on goods
goes down, I'm going to buy. Those dollars are worth less each day,
and money only has value if its spent.

Here's the way to think of (one) inflationary condition. You've got "easy money". A bunch of people start bidding on things, competing to buy goods and services with that easy money. This bids the price of that thing up.
It's a seller's market. Buyers are competing for sellers. I'll give you $100. No, wait, I'll give you $101. Etc. Price goes up.
This bidding is the velocity and monetary momentum effect. Now, sellers can increase production in response. Now, if the increase in production meets the increase in money being thrown at, the price doesn't increase at all, or very little.
But, when the money chasing outstrips production, then inflation results.
Deflation: It's a panic, Sell, sell, sell! A buyers market. Sellers are scrambling to unload. Now, the monetary momentum goes the other way. There is no bidding outpacing selling. The sellers are the one's now bidding the price *down* in competition. I'll sell this to you for $100!. Hell, no, I'll let you have it for $99. etc.
When that price starts going down, that sends a signal to producers to stop selling it.
And that's a contracting economy.
Inflation (generally): Buy, buy, buy!
Deflation: Sell, sell, sell!

I am scared to death of LIB approach. i need a sort of working medical system, a way to get my meds, or i will die. thats a huge problem for me. I remember when i was first exporting horses from Russia and the ones going to Europe had to go through romania and for that portion of the trip it was safest to hire mercenaries to ride on the transport to keep people from attacking it so they could eat your horses. They were THAT poor. My Russian friend had to surround his horse farm with razor wire and let attack dogs roam the outskirts because a few men with a chainsaw could take apart one of his racehorses in less than five minutes and load it on a truck. Meat was that hard to come by and people were desperate to feed families, or make some money on the black market. So i had some personal dealings with other people's Burning Times, and they were NOT FUN.

I just needed to organize my thoughts away from inflation. All I could remember was deflation does occur but it's usually a short term (6mos-1yr) problem and it happens often in commodity markets.
But what I was thinking about was what if deflation became the norm instead of inflation? How would that effect a country as opposed to an economic sector like mining or soybeans?

It's easier to understand if you remove the monetary component. In inflation, a loaf of bread costs $1 on January 1 and $2 on the next December 31. In deflation, a loaf of bread costs $1 on January 1 and $0.50 at the end of December. You have $200 of savings on January 1, you're going to love deflation -- you'll be able to buy 400 loaves of bread at year-end; if you have $200 of debt on January 1, you're going to hate deflation -- you thought you could put away 50 pounds of flour and bake 200 loaves of bread to pay the loan back....but you're going to need twice as many loaves.
Similarly, if you have $200 of savings at the beginning of the year and thought you'd get 200 loaves of bread at the end, inflation is a major bummer -- you get only 100 loaves. But if you borrowed $200 and bought frozen bread mix, you'd make out well when your baked bread got you $400 at the end of the year....if it weren't for the fact that you actually gained no additional bread loaves and that the government will make you pay taxes on that $200 "profit".

I guess i am lucky. as long as i got some shit to work with i can patch critters and people up and i am a good midwife to animals (i havent tried with people, hope not to.) Grimmy has Marine skills to fall back on and we have stallions and mare to make non gas dependent transport, but one of the first things to fail is sanitation and medical system. your first thing you need is water, then food, then shelter. If we have a problem where power goes out then water is not far behind and lots and lots of regular people will die in the first four days. that gives me the willies about the end of Atlas Shrugged.

The reason the money printing hasn't caused general inflation (it did cause specific inflation, in the stock market, which is what they were really trying to do more than anything) is because of *velocity*.
If you print a trillion dollars and nobody uses it, it has no effect. And that's what's happening. The only effect it has was to allow Wall Street bankster high speed computers to save the stock market by bidding the prices back up.
It didn't do anything for the real economy.
That's why I was sticking with monetary momentum (the term MV looks like momentum to those with physics training). It's the product of the quantity of money and the rate which it is circulating.
Velocity is reall a problematic thing. It can't really be observed, only calculated. But it's a real effect, just sort of ephemeral.
When you run those calculations, you see the monetary velocity over the past years just crashed. The increase in quantity did nothing to increase total "momentum".

Shelter isn't a big issue right now. We've got 50-100 years worth of buildings that anyone can stay in with physical power to hold them. Water isn't a big issue because almost all population centers are near a water source. Over time it becomes more problematic because the water source will become rapidly fouled by sewage and pollution (and bodies) but at first that's not an issue.
But food... now that's a problem. You can't hunt for long because you'll tap out the local wildlife in a matter of weeks if not days. There's not room to raise any stock in a city, and even if there was, there's no food. Except in the parks, which will very rapidly be taken over by the strongest and smartest people.
Rural people will fare better, because a country boy can skin a buck and he can run a troutline. The infrastructure is in place to raise food in ranches and farms. Even smaller homes have gardens and land to grow on. But heavy population areas will empty stores in a matter of hours then prey on each other for what they have stored up and then have nothing. And while homeboy is a dangerous dude who is well armed, he doesn't really even know how to start a fire, let alone cook a pigeon.

That's what economists claim but it is simply untrue. People what they have to buy and what they want to buy. The only time people wait some inordinate amount of time is when things are changing (in the second order - accelerating) not when there is constant change (i.e. a deflation rate). I gave the example of technology, which is a highly inflationary field. Everyone knows that no matter what they buy it will be old news, slow and underpowered in 6 months ... but that only stopped people from buying computers and such back in the beginning, when this was all new. Now, people are used to this nature of the field and just buy new technology whenever they want or need it. The hugely deflationary nature of the field has no effect on purchases.
Cycle reenforces. Soon, businesses cannot stock new stuff because current stuff not selling. Manufacturers curtail supply, maybe lay off folks. System grinds to halt. Tax revenue goes down. Every negative reinforces another negative. Then some with mortgages walk away from their homes or financed cars/boats/hookers. IMO, much harder to break deflationary cycle than inflationary, but I'm no econ major.

Well they'd be pretty low in numbers by that point. Between starvation, riots, fires, and just murdering each other for clothes, food, gas, and a nicer place to live there would be significant attrition. And without any sort of discipline or preparation they'd spend bullets pretty fast and run the hell out.
In a place like NYC there's a lot of people and a lot of guns, but not a lot of ammo because of all the laws. Without a constant stream of black market weapons and ammo moving in, they'd spend it pretty fast because they don't understand how the world works.
Meanwhile, Joe Bob the farmer has a few crates of "oh crap" ammo and can load his own, and nobody to shoot.

then start there. learn how to make paraffin and dryer lint fire starters in egg crate molds. (UNUSED Tampons work great for that too, even have their own wick) then work on simple survival skills. remember, water, fire, shelter, food. Without fire to boil water you might harm yourself by drinking nassy water in an emergency situation. You can read. Build your skills now. In a pinch with your fire starter, and some twigs you can rub an AC/DC battery on steel wool and start a fire. its very cool. Have fun with it. some of this shit is glorious fun in that sorta-destructive-kid way.

Agreed. And remember -- the government levies taxes against the nominal value of any sales over purchases. You buy a rock in 1997 for $200, which is the equivalent of 400 loaves of bread. You sell the rock in 2016 for $600, which is the equivalent of 200 loaves of bread. Not only have you lost half the value in terms of loaves of bread, you're supposed to pay taxes on $400 of capital gains.

Literally, the trillions "printed" are electronic, digi-dollars. They only exist in the Fed's computers. Real physical currency has increased, and back when I was really into this, we'd look at FRNs outstanding. It did spike up a bit here and there, but it was absolutely nothing.Think of banks as having "reserves". This is the real money, as the Fed defines it, not the checking account balances. In the parlance, that's M0, monetary base. Bank created money is M1, M2 and MZM and all that stuff. But M0 is what the Fed creates.
Banks have this as either physical cash in their vaults, or as digits in their accounts with the Fed. These are known as reserve accounts. Or reserve balances.
Fed buys $20B of Ts from the banks. It simply increments their reserve accounts by $20B. Nothing physical happens. Now, someone might want to withdraw some bit of all that new money somehow, which would mean the Fed would have to increase the actual physical FRNs, and it would decrement the reserve accounts and hand over physical cash.
But all these trillion just live in those reserve accounts.

But they loaned it out with the understanding that at some point the 1s and 0s could be reeled back in by the Fed when they felt it necessary. What happened was it went on too long and created another stock market bubble. So, again, the Fed is faced with the problem of an inflated market and if they take away the money they've spread around, the stock markets will collapse.
So they basically delayed the inevitable for 10 years. This time though, there's no way to keep the stock market from collapsing.

Inflation means that the currency is being manipulated.
Specifically, someone is printing money, an act normally called "counterfeiting" in order to overwhelm the efficiency improvements and then some, and they and those they favor are getting the entire benefit of those funds.

Its been a long, long time since the planet has had a catastrophic reduction in population. Stuff like disease, warfare, famine, and climactic disruptions caused it in the past but for a few hundred years now technology has allowed us to avoid the bulk of that and ease the rest. WW2 and WWI were ghastly, but didn't really affect population that much. Stuff like the Black Death wiped out a third of Europe in a matter of months and they didn't recover for centuries.
We're kinda due.

If Global Warming was real, I'd say Greenland, but it ain't. I think seasteading might be the best choice. Find some seamount (Koko Seamount in the northern pacific, for instance) that rises fairly close to the surface, sink some pilings, build a platform city for a surface station / dock, and keep most of the civilization underwater.

believe it or not, if you want to live, then you will live. I have known people who have seen young strong marines hurt not as bad as the mutilated dude next to them, just roll over and die sometimes, if they find out they are crippled. Even more to the point, this whole house-of-cards fantasy world has been created through US manipulations: Europe doesn't have to spend anything on defense, the US will take care of things through NATO; the world doesn't have to research pharmaceuticals, the US will take care of things through the FDA, and allow you to make our $600/dose drugs for $2; the world needn't spend any money on agricultural research, the US will not only develop it, but will also provide Peace Corps volunteers to implement it; the rest of the world need not worry about pirates and bandits on major trade routes, the US Navy and Marines will patrol them to ensure their safety....the list goes on-and-on.
So, if the US starts tipping-over into going foom, how the hell are other countries going to solve all of the problems they now have inherited? Once the famines start in their home countries, will they be able to make it past the pirates without towards the US without medications? And let us not forget, they won't be able to use their hoarded dollars to bribe border guards....
The US is the linchpin, the indispensable nation -- the entire world will be so screwed if things go sideways here that raw survival will become THE primary focus. Mass migration is not in the cards.

The value of a dollar is determined by what it can be traded for and the fact that the fedgov insists we use it to pay their taxes. Dollars in foreign hands have general value because eventually they can be used to purchase stuff from us so we can pay our taxes.
When that ends for us, it ends for all of them. Our demand for their products ends *and* the value of the dollars they hold (physical or otherwise) goes rapidly to 0.
No one's going to invade us that can't today because the cost to cross an ocean becomes prohibitive. And it's a long walk for even most of mexico (which will be dealing with the fact that the cartels suddenly have nothing of value beyond their guns).

Compare what it takes to live there without tech and cars, planes, etc vs what it would take to live that way in, say, Iowa. The population drops precipitously, and the standard of living drops about as much. now you're living like an Eskimo instead of a New Yorker.

Well in part the Irish, who were a largely untouched monastic culture so they didn't get burned and destroyed like a lot of other areas. And in part, isolated pockets of Rome that survived through even the worst times had libraries and saved things.
But there's a lot about then we're only now finding out through archaeology because it was lost and forgotten. A ton of technology was forgotten, techniques in farming, building, metallurgy, etc, because everyone was too focused on just surviving a world without Rome to keep order, deliver mail, and regulate commerce. England really took it in the teeth when Rome just basically left one day and never came back.
You're right that the Roman Catholic Church did manage to save a ton of stuff and keep it for posterity (monasteries especially) and few capable historians even talk about a "dark age" any more, but I think you know what Cato means.

Think about spending 8 hours every day just trying to live tomorrow and sleeping when the sun goes down because there's nothing else to do. I think both of you grossly overestimate the pleasures of living in a dome made of ice and fishing for your meal every day.

So they invented all this amazing crap just to invent it then put it in a museum because only slaves actually did anything with it. Romans were more practical: they showed what a culture could do with Greek learning and a desire to put it to use. They took over a huge chunk of the world and kept it for a millennium.

Just going to put this out there.....the Romans were good at concrete. The Colosseum in Rome is largely concrete -- and the Pantheon, finished in 128 AD, is the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome today....
The technique of making concrete was all-but-forgotten for nearly a thousand years -- from 500 to the 14th century. It was gradually remembered and reinvented over the next several centuries until Smeaton's Tower of the mid 1750's and the patent for Portland Cement in 1824 (which used slightly different materials than the Romans).
The dark age of concrete construction had little to do with churches or The Enlightenment.

You are a saver with savings if you put your money in a piggy bank or a safe.
If you hand the money over to anyone else, including a bank, you have put those funds at risk for the hope of some return or, in the case of a checking account, convenience. In this case you are an investor, and you are responsible for understanding the possibility that you may not get it back, no matter how much sunshine they blow up your butt about safety and insurance.
This is of course part of the same scheme to convince everyone that 2% inflation is ideal when the law giving the fed permission to exist says its mandate is to maintain stable (inflation = 0%) prices (yes I know it also gives a mandate regarding unemployment, which is folly as there's no reason at all to believe the fed can positively affect employment).

Twelve horses and a bunch of foals of various ages could keep you spending every light our either taking care of them and training them feeding and maintaining yourself and spouse and the domicile, maintaining the fenceline, and watching out for invaders at night. You would have to have chickens, rabbits and goats, perhaps a few cows, for food and dairy. Not for nothing were the old German barns stables on the bottom and human quarters on top! Made it simpler to keep an eye on the stock. But thats a lot to do. and you will want kids, but without moderns medicine every childbirth would be fraught with danger. The uncomplicated life is harder than it looks, which most simple things are.

They don't need air conditioned super trailers for the stars, 100 hangers on in the entourage being cared for, the massive catering table groaning with gourmet food, etc. All the extraneous costs are there just to make life a party while they make films but it jacks up the price for no increase in production quality.
So they blow $140 million dollars to make a two hour movie, that's just inconceivable to me. No wonder they lose money when they waste it so stupidly.

I have a friend in DC who still works there. Used to work in this admin in security. His opinion is that these politicians are the children of several much smarter politicians and powerful men, and trophy wives, only they got moms brains and dads looks each time. they are the stupidest fools imaginable, and stubborn and proud to boot. They push policies they don't believe in to fix problems they know they made but refuse to reverse previous policy on. We could quit voting for them, but when a smart guy comes along either we dont like him or he seems insincere.
we really arent gonna like what it gonna take to change course. thats why they havent done it. I have no clue how this culturally transgressive mess will end. I keep thinking of various Twilight Zone episodes and wondering if life would be different if young kids today watched them like we did when we were kids. Would they use them as cultural teaching stories, just scary enough to stick? i somehow think they would only find them quaint and not have the tooks they need to even understand them.

They also knew that adding horse hair to the mix made it less likely to crack as it hardened, and adding blood made it frost-resistant. My dad retired as the #3 civil engineer for the City of Los Angeles, and I don't recall a single instance of specifying horse hair in a concrete mix.

You need a hot date with that saucy little wench, Advil. I would advise AGAINST wrapping overnight. A little icing tonight might be advisable even though the joint will likely stiffen up worse....because it could forestall swelling in the morning.
If you have any reason to suspect a bone chipped, all bets are off.

I dunno -- I've tried with the naked eye to see Jupiter's moons and the crescent shape of Venus, but I couldn't do it -- and I have perfect vision.
With some squinting and creative imagination I thought[/] that I could see Venus' shape, but upon looking through a telescope, I could see that it was all in my head -- I wanted to see it so bad that I imagined I had done so. Same with J's moons.
Is it possible? Hard to say. And just as hard to "test," since we can't see what another person sees.

I used to keep a selection in my head, and used them based on implied security level. It helped that I have a "trick memory" with numbers -- I can remember my 8-digit student ID number from the school I graduated from in 1983. Since Ira dropped a keylogger on me and nabbed one of my more serious financial keys, I've gone with individual keys per site -- kept on post-its.
I've since created a form to better organize them, and I'll be moving to a gpg keyring when I get enough organized. The chance of me putting passwords in an app that I didn't personally write and compile is, plus-or-minus, zip.

I have 8 choices for encryption (Blowfish, Blowfish(CBC) DES, DES(CBC), Triple DES, Triple DES(CBC), Rijindael, and Rijindael(CBC)) in my little program, and one printed back-up that is kept where burglars wouldn't look. I do the printout about every 4 months, and it's a pain to change passwords even that often, but it has to be done, cause' thieves gonna thieve if you give them a chance.
