Larry Kudlow: I've Changed My Mind. Seal the Borders. Stop Giving Out Visas Until We Sort This Out.

"This is war," he says.

Note that this is a pretty big change, because Larry Kudlow was previously an "immigration reformer," which I take to be the usual code for "business-class Republican amnesty supporter."

And now?

Not so much.

I know this is not my usual position. But this is a war. Therefore I have come to believe there should be no immigration or visa waivers until the U.S. adopts a completely new system to stop radical Islamic terrorists from entering the country. A wartime lockdown. And a big change in my thinking.

ISIS and related Islamic terrorists are already here. More are coming. We must stop them.

Until FBI director James Comey gives us the green light, I say seal the borders.

Here’s what we must do: Completely reform the vetting process for immigrants and foreign visitors. Change the screening process. Come up with a new visa-application review process. Stop this nonsense of marriage-visa fraud. And in the meantime, seal the borders. I agree with Jessica Vaughn, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, who argued many of these points in excellent detail on the National Review website on Friday.

Again, why am I taking this hardline position? In the past I have been an immigration reformer, not a restrictionist. But we are at war. That changes everything.

He knocks Donald Trump for putting this in the ugliest, most likely to repel formulation possible (those are more my words and sentiments than Kudlow's), but he's now agreed in broad principles.

Frankly, I don't know whether or not to take this seriously.

Let me explain to you my Conspiracy Theory.

It could be that the business-class establishment is beginning to think that We're serious about rejecting their fifteenth attempt at just-the-tip amnesty.

It could be that they are starting to really fear that their pet political party might actually desert them.

Therefore, it could be that they have decided that in order to maintain control over their party, they will have to abandon (temporarily) their devotion to the Open Borders cause that threatens their control -- if you can't beat 'em, co-opt them and buy them off with trinkets.

Ergo, this could be a sort of trial balloon to see if it's possible for other Establishment Champions to change their claimed position on these issues -- claiming the exigencies of solemn war have changed the facts, ergo they've changed their minds -- and by doing so find a path to political victory that has hitherto eluded their grasp.

I don't know; am I overthinking? I've become much more cynical and radical than I used to be, and I was never what you'd call a happy and moderate individual.

Update: Aquaviva mentions Kudlow is considering running for Senate in Connecticut.

Oh.

I think you're overthinking. It's becoming obvious to anyone not named Barack Hussein Obama that we, the entire western world, are at war with radical Islam whether we like it or not.

Finland caught a couple ISIS guys today, Spain got a big one that we are trying to extradite, France is shutting down mosques right and left .. this is just beginning. Hell, even Loretta Open Borders Sanchez is saying that between 8% and 20% of Muslims are radicalized. There are 1.6 billion (and growing) Muslims.

33 Yes a common sense review of visas is needed and an actual reduction of the immigration number allowed of Muslims with some exceptions is required during this war. But we are not at war with Singapore or Indonesia who have more Muslims than the Middle East. We have a lot of economic interests in the Pacific rim that overlap with our security interests. To say the least its complicated on how to solve one problem but not create more.

I would think they could kick that can way beyond any of their expected lifetimes with a bit of means testing or an adjustment to the retirement age. The debt will likely blow up sooner if interest rates rise enough.

I had this thought earlier: It's always just easiest to rubber stamp an application. Don't bother with vetting; just pass it through. No work!

The only thing that keeps a bureaucrat from doing that is fear of losing his job when his shoddy work results in a problem.

But Obama has taken that threat off the table entirely!

So why would anyone in the federal bureaucracy do anything but rubber stamp visas?

Hillary is a brain damaged, power mad, stupid alcoholic. I get that. She's not capable of intelligence or human decency.
But the mass of Democrats--what do they gain politically from indifference to the murder of the American people?
What do socialists feel they gain from adding millions of non-Americans to the dole. And no one can argue the Syrian immigrants will strengthen the economy.
Compassion? The Democratic Party doesn't have a single heart among all of them combined.
And when would the many sincere black Christians support the Democratic indifference to the persecution of Christians in the ME?

For too long it has been chic to be fashionably left, and to parrot the Left's talking points. Now, at long last, perhaps the scales are falling from some people's eyes, when they see that the Left means only ill for them, that the Left is perfectly happy for them to be murdered if it advances the Left's agenda, and that the Left's ostentatious concern for "humanity" and "morality" is just a pose they strike in furtherance of their agenda.

I get the impression that Ace is reacting to Kudlow in a way that most people reacted to Trump at the beginning of the summer, vis a vis, he was a liberal and donated to Hilary etc. and now all of a sudden he's positioning himself as a mash-up of Reagan, Coolidge and Curtis LeMay.

Well, maybe so. But Trump is a VERY savvy operative and he knows that if he fucks the base it's his image - one that he assiduously pumps up and guards - that will be in the shitter for eternity.

Maybe Kudlow really does see what's going on? In any case, I trust Trump more than Kudlow so I would watch Kudlow like a hawk.

None of this crap ever addresses the underlying issues causing said problem. Some of them can be insurmountable. Using hard drugs like heroin is often due to bad life choices, losing hope, addiction to other drugs, etc. A taskforce isn't going to solve those problems. But their solution is always presto chango more government!

I mean if there was an issue I could understand the Establishment screwing over the grassroots because it cost us voters in the middle, it would be something like abortion that's not even a realistic objective. That would actually make sense. But open borders amnesty? Nobody wants it, it's dangerous, and it could easily mean a new 3rd party.

I understand that Singapore realized it was the prime trans-shipment port for heroin from the Golden Triangle, which inevitably would mean that they themselves would have a huge heroin problem.

So they decided to get hard-nosed; caught with weight, you hang. Period. They don't give a shit if you're the Pope, Mother Theresa, Barack Obama, the Dalai Lama, if their execution stats show disparate impact, if your mama would be upset, if any number of dignitaries write letters pleading for clemency, or indeed anything else. They make no provision for the problem ("said person shall hang., unless ..."), and consequently do not suffer from the problem.

Somehow, coincidentally, they don't have a heroin problem.

Larry's an idiot. Not any more so than 90% of the people who are published, on TV, or open their mouths in public, on public policy matters. But sorry, no huge wisdom, character, or IQ points for having *some* economic and financial literacy, which Larry does, though it's often masked by his alcohol-induced fogginess and dulled edge.

Even the framework of this chapter is false, ace. "It's war" is no more serious than "it's rule of law/it's serious factors in violent crime/it's massive pernicious economic and social impacts/it's a growing time-bomb of mass unassimilated migration" - all things that make illegal mass migration such a problem. And that make any kind of amnesty incredibly stupid, destructive, and irresponsible.

That's the key thing to remember about amnesty - sure, it's racist or race-baiting, and/or greedy and rent-seeking, at it's base, for most "elites" and activists - but it's just incredibly, indefensibly stupid policy ..... one reason Rubio cannot be regarded as a serious person or fit for the presidency.

So even Larry's "uh, THIS is different" schtick makes no sense. If one approaches the topic seriously.

I think, if the tide does turn on this, the Lefties will not come to their rescue.

152 @129...not sure what Romney has to do with this, but here is my thought, for what it is worth (no a dam thing).

He is a nice man. I believe he would be pro-life. I met him, once, in an airport. He came up to me, and I was all early-morning space out with Jeb's crooked glasses on, and asked if plane was boarding. I did not look at him when I answered, then looked his way and wowzer. Let me just say, at 7am, he looked mighty fine. Was kind. Did not give off any pompous crap. Traveled alone. I, ChristyB, told him I wished he had won. He was gracious. He laughed when I said, back in 2014, that he should run (note: I do not think this way now. I also think he had Barky on the ropes in that debate and let us all down). At any rate, a very decent man lost. Would he have made a difference? Do not know. I do know he would have been a lot better than the jackass we have now.

I have pretty dang good radar, and he gave off a "good man" vibe. Trust me on that. So I will never join the hate Romney bandwagon. Do I hope the GOP will draft him? NO. He had his chance, and due to his wife's health, I hope he stays out of this mess.

157 Larry hears the not-so-distant sound of the gallows being hobbled together. This isn't a glib Buchanan-type metaphor about pitchforks this time, either, and Kudlow can smell the rope. Let's hope he isn't alone among the political elite because this country will explode in ways we cannot even envision if the borders remain open and another attack takes place. Foreigners are about to realize they have to be utter fools to invest in contemporary America given the instability, which likely also has Kudlow's rapt attention. I think while he would love to have continued unchecked mass migration, Kudlow also knows the American people could put the torch to the motherfucker in ways that would make Ferguson look like a five-year-old girl's birthday party. Kudlow's a bellwether of Establishment sentiment, at a minimum.

Finally, "cynical and radical" is yesterday's "just because you are paranoid..." Even those of us who saw what was happening years ago were unaware of the magnitude of treason. I hope this ends well but fear the tipping point was reached a long time back. We'll be lucky to get off as lightly as Trump.

I try to stay out of that issue as well, but at the same time I think it's outrageous that people who are extremely pro-life due to religion should be required to subsidize it. Let the people who want one pay for it themselves and answer for their decision to a higher power. The government has no business using tax dollars to subsidize it.

If he just gets a good tall fence built and shuts off illegals walking across the border, then he will have succeeded. Anything else is a plus.

The GOPe will have to beg me to vote for them in every election to come.

Wrote an email to Toomey (PA Senator) about his bs Gun laws. All I got back was a bunch of blah blah so boom he ain't getting my vote. I'll vote for someone else. Or write someone in. He's an idiot because PA has a lot of Gun rights people and a lot of hunting goes on here. What he wants to do is plain stupid for a whole bunch of reasons. Actually JJ you're mixing two things. The '65 act surely turned out badly, but enforcement (or lack thereof) is a different, and far more pernicious animal. Grew up near the border. Enforcement was real and fairly effective until the implicit and explicit signals worked through the system amounting to "ah, eff it". Of course some time ago it reached the staggering lawless state of "sanctuary cities".

Most of those who pooh-pooh mass illegal migration of course are never directly affected by it in ways they understand, but beyond that, they're mostly very stupid (about public policy). They don't start with an understanding of how rule of law and fairness - not weather, baseball, or drive-thru burger joints - distinguish the US from the rest of the world. Thus it is beyond them to consider the disaster that is the erosion of rule of law in this area.

That leaves aside the social/fiscal/civil consequences, which are real and spectacular. And uniformly negative.

Muslims should only be let in on sufferance, and they should agree that if they are subsequently found to have ties to, or support radical islamism in any way, that they may be shot after a quick military trial.

I can understand why he would come onto you because you look like a model and are very amusing and smart :^) but I was glad to re-read that as "came up to me." because I agree with you. I think Romney is a very decent man and i'm so sorry the lost. I put out a sign once-"Yes; You should have voted for Romney." Considering the reaction I got (People honking and joggers going by and pointing) it was one of my more popular signs. He could hardly have been worse than Obama, and indeed, much, better, but he missed his chance; I don't want him running again.

213 I've lurked here for years. Don't think I've ever posted. Odd that Larry Kudlow would be the impetus. I do trust his statement, because I know what it's like to crash as he did and construct a new life hour by hour, building slowly to day by day. (In my case it was a cancer that was supposed to doom me and so far--25 years and counting--hasn't.) I know how it changes you. From then on, when you see the writing on the wall, you pay attention. So I trust Kudlow on this. And I think his change of opinion matters.

I didn't use to be this way, it's just they are wearing thin.

I'm even getting sick of the head scarves, whatever they call them. Back in the day, women used to wear those outside here, and watching old movies where the women sometimes wear those, it bothers me. When I was a kid back in the 70s, I think my grandmothers would do that occasionally.

But now, I can't stand it because I associate it with Moooslums.

He's talked a lot but when the votes were cast suddenly he's voting with the GOPe.

Don't ask for specifics because I'm not going to do your homework for you and it's late. Just look up his actual votes on immigration, dream act attempts, the tpp bill or the enabler thing I forget which. His position on H1 visas which are used to steal jobs from Americans so that rich techies like Zuckerberg can get richer. And Walt Disney can spend more money corrupting your kids.

No Cruz talks a good game and makes all the right sounds but his votes in the Senate don't match.

Plus I just don't trust him. Gut feeling but I've learned to trust it.

I think Romney would have not have pulled troops out of Iraq and left a vacuum. I think he would have been more decisive action against ISIS and not play "Pretend bomb" and I think there would not have been so many crooks/Muslims in his administration. I also think Romney loves America in a way Obama doesn't, hasn't and never will. I think he would have been more supportive of the military generally. of course, it's all just speculation now.

236 "No Cruz talks a good game and makes all the right sounds but his votes in the Senate don't match."

It is one thing to vote your conscience in a lost cause when you're a freshman Senator. Being the lone dissenter in a bill you oppose, but is certain to pass, can even cast you as a hero. Ron Paul did this as often as he could manage.

It is another to do it while running a presidential campaign. Scrutiny is much, much harsher, and political prices will be paid. Each of those votes can be explained in terms of political tactics; a recent attack by Rubio on one backfired on him, because it was *obvious* that Cruz's position was one of tactical expediency for a greater cause.

And it boggles my mind that people like you can insist on suicidal ideological purity and a spotless record on a pet issue, and then throw down the gauntlet on behalf of Donald Fucking Trump, who was a Democrat (no, really; he said so) until he declared his Republican candidacy, and pretend like he's a better choice.

Universal suffrage was a horrible, horrible mistake.

237 It could be that they are starting to really fear that their pet political party might actually desert them.

240 Military comparisons of the word "sucks"

An Army grunt stands in the rain with a 15 kg. pack on his back,
5 kg. weapon in hand, after having marched 15 km, and says, "This sucks."

An Army Airborne Ranger stands waist deep in the rain with a 25 kg. pack on his back,
weapon in hand, after having jumped from an airplane and marched 30 km,
and says with a smile, "This sucks just fine!"

A Special Forces soldier lies in the mud, 40 kg pack on his back,
weapon in hand, after swimming 10 km to shore, crawling through a swamp and
marching 40 km at night past the enemy positions,
says with a grin, while biting the head of a snake "This really sucks, I wish it could suck more....."

An Air Force Pilot flying over the battlefield, the rain is pouring down,
looks down at the soldiers below and says: "Sure sucks down there!"

An Air Force officer sits in an easy chair in his air conditioned,
carpeted room and says to his friend, "Man.. Cable's out! This sucks!"

I think that's why he backed out at first. He didn't want to win, he just wanted to mess Bush up.

Who knows how he would've done if he hadn't gone all conspiracy nut and quit then came back. Once burnt twice shy and he still gathered a lot of votes.

Trump won't be the same thing. Plus he's running as a Republican and not a 3rd party.

And to top that off, if Trump does something really really crazy (I know) before then, I may have to change my mind. I'm concerned about his willingness to take away rights based solely on a list compiled by bureaucrats.

Public opinion may be swinging a bit toward an immigration ban, as brougt to the fore by T-rump, but its not like their is any real movement that way among the chattering class or the GOPe. So it really does seem to me to represent a breaking of ranks on his part.

I'm not in CT anymore thank God in Heaven but I wonder if it's even a popular enough move there to be chalked up to cynical posturing for political advantage. Is it in fact an outright advantage yet?

I mean, that would be fantastic, right? I hope it will be soon. But I'm not sure its such a lock yet that it would be wise for a calculating politician to stake it as a policy position right now.

He was all excited about finding !scones! and was digging in his backpack. I said, "I'd like for you to meet Mr. Romney." He looked up in surprise and shook his hand. He told me, later, that he should never be surprised at what I am up to in his absence. ha. Gov. Romney signed my boarding pass later, and I intend to frame it to tick off in-laws.

285 I don't see a particular reason to distrust Kudlow on this. He's pretty straightforward by nature and tries to be as free-market oriented as possible on principle, which is why he's been for more open borders. Giving into the pragmatism of border security is difficult inasmuch as it's an admission that deeply held idealism may not be viable, so kudos to Kudlow for recognizing the threat. Also, we'd be fortunate to have him in the Senate, especially representing Connecticut.

Then you said you weren't going to "do my homework for me." Otherwise known as, 'providing evidence to support an assertion.'

I said that such votes can be explained as good politics, and gave a recent example.

Then you apparently told a complete stranger that he should tell me to "back off," as I'm "his boy."

Finally, you completely ignored what I said, because it was well reasoned and had supporting evidence and pointed out an uncomfortable fact about your new hero, and pretended that I didn't address what you actually wrote, accompanied by a juvenile taunt.

I heard that on the radio while driving home from work. That is absolutely demented.

As a matter of fact, Earth's rotation *is* gradually slowing because of the Moon's gravity. The Moon is also slowly moving further away from the Earth. Eventually they will become gravitationally locked, so Earth and Moon will present the same faces to each other, and Earth's day and month will be the same length. This will take billions of years.

I don't think it's worth worrying about.

306 WHITE MARSH, Md. A police pursuit that ended in a crash Friday afternoon has left two people dead, police said.

Maryland Transportation Authority police said officers tried to initiate a traffic stop around 1:40 p.m. on northbound Interstate 95 near Eastern Avenue in southeast Baltimore.

MdTA police said the vehicle fled, crossed the grassy median into oncoming traffic just south of Joppa Road near White Marsh and struck a vehicle head-on.

MdTA police said there were three people in each vehicle. One person in the fleeing vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The other five people were taken to hospitals. One of those people died at Shock Trauma.

All lanes of southbound I-95 were closed for hours. All lanes were reopened by 6 p.m

I think it would have brought back bad flashbacks of 9/11 if first responders were killed (my husband's distant cousins were on that French video, the Pifer's,with the shot of the two brothers shaking hands and one not making it. Three other first cousins (he has a huge Irish family) were first responders: NYC generational firefighters and police. It was unknown, due to terrible telephone communication, for two days if they were there (they happened to all be off duty or on vacation at the time, thank God, or two would have been there).

I am also well aware of the heroics, every day, of first responders due to working with them. So this would have been another layer of horror for us all.

When the Sun becomes a red giant, it will definitely swallow up Mercury and Venus. It's less certain whether it will swallow up Earth, or whether the Sun's mass loss will cause Earth's orbit to move farther out.

But it's a moot point, since the Sun's heating up will cause Earth's oceans to boil away in a billion years or so.

350 Sock fail about the earth-moon tidal lock above.

This stupid business about climate change chaning the earth's rotational speed. There are tiny little effects going on all the time. There are the larger trends of the earth's rotation, and then tiny little short term bounces. The Earth's rotation is a vector, of course, and what is governing is the angular momentum vector, and all the external forces on that.

Consider a figure skater spinning. She pulls in her arms and speeds up, and extends them and slows down. This is conservation of angular momentum at work and she changes her mass distribution and thus moment of inertia.

In reality, it gets very complicated in the general case, with the moment of inertia having to be a freakin' rank-2 tensor. Angular momentum and the axis of rotation do not have to be parallel in the general case and that's what it gets complicated. That's when the high powered math has to come into play.

The Earth is close to having enough symmetry that it can all be simplified, but at the multi digits of precision level, it is not.

The earth's axis of rotation does a little dance all the time. You would see that on a plot as a tiny little noise riding on the general trend of the main precession.

Its a revolver but the barrel is slung at the bottom of the cylinder, so the recoil is in line with the shooter's hand, reducing that snap up and to the side. And its a sealed system so the gas rotates the cylinder and cocks the hammer like an automatic. Very interesting gun.

Leap days have to do with the temporary variations in the rotation of the Earth.

429 As for guns, the one that fascinates me most right now is the Mateba Model 6 revolver.

Its a revolver but the barrel is slung at the bottom of the cylinder, so the recoil is in line with the shooter's hand, reducing that snap up and to the side. And its a sealed system so the gas rotates the cylinder and cocks the hammer like an automatic. Very interesting gun.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 11, 2015 10:07 PM (39g3+)

I think the Chiapa Rhino is similar, except for lacking the automatic feature.

Seems to me the big drawback to these revolvers is that you are probably going to pay as much or more for one than for a good quality automatic pistol with a much larger magazine capacity. Can I say it's a solution in search of a problem?

Looks like the Rhino brought out recently which is a revolver with a bottom slung barrel.

It doesn't look as weird as I thought it would. Good looking gun, big too. .44 or .357 mag. Apparently it can chamber a .38 but that doesn't have enough energy to properly charge the hammer, so you have to use it like a double action.

452 The grand calendar cycle is complex. The earth's rotational period is a little longer than 365 days, 365.25635 days in fact. Note that is a smidge more than 365 and 1/4 days. But this is NOT what is called the "tropical year". This includes the precession of the earth's axis, and the tropical year is thus a smidge shorter than the orbital period in inertial space. The tropical year is 365.2421891 days.

This is what must define the year to keep it in sync with the seaons.

So, imagine the earth circling the sun. Every Jan 1, we are about 1/4 day behind, but a little less. So, every four years, we add another day to the year, and just about catch up. But that gets us a little ahead, and so every 100 years, we skip a leap year. But that gets us behind a little again, so every 4 times that,or 400 years, we have a leap year.

In 2000, we had a leap year, as that completed the last 400 year cycle. In 1900, we didn't, and won't in 2100.

Now, that is still not exactly in sync, but that's as far as the Gregorian calendar takes it.

Agree! This has me much more worried than some of the more pressing issues facing us. Imagine the grid down for months, and the economy slowed or halted for years. No idea how I would cope with that.

Take that up with them. I'm just relaying their message. The GOP's problem in the NE isn't because the blue collar guys love the gays. They think the GOP is for offshoring, and we know they're right. We also know that the Democrats really don't mind that offshoring, but their smart enough to at least pay lip service the cause. Kind of like how the GOP talks about spending cuts, but never manages to do any.

509 Yeah, probably so. Or even more than nine. I just love interesting, unique gun designs. The HK G11 caseless and the gyrojet pistol hold a special place in my heart.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 11, 2015 10:30 PM (39g3+)

Then we are pretty much on the same page. I like cool and quirky tech like that, too. I would love to have a Gyrojet pistol, heh. If the law were no problem, I would probably buy some pretty commonplace 9 mm automatic as a self-defense/carry gun. But since we in Canada can only own "restricted weapons" for the purpose of shooting at the range or as "collectibles", there is no point in my doing that.

What I would like to buy is either a Webley Mark I .455, or a Mauser C96 made 1898 or prior, since either is legally deemed to be an "antique firearm" in Canada, and no license or permit is required to buy or own one. And either of those two, if in good condition, is fit for the purpose for which it was designed.

I've only shot a friends' 10mm, I don't have a ton of experience with them. But the recoil wasn't ridiculous.

516 AOP, look into the St Etienne 11mm French ordinance pistol.
Not as classy as a Webley, but they are stout. It was one of the rounds tested for consideration doing the workup for the 45ACP around 1901

522 Publius, I am not a pharmacist, but a friend with rheumatoid arthritis suggests boron as a supplement. He says it has stopped the progress of his arthritis and reduces the inflammation.
Now he just eats borax, which per the MSDS is less toxic than table salt*, but it still tastes mildly like fish flavored soap scum and will make your taste buds unhappy

523 Oh yes, I go to a specialist, a rheumatologist which specialize in RA and similar diseases. And I know about all the latest drugs, the "biologics" as Enbrel and similar are called.

536 No because you need to get back to the same point in the orbit (thus synchronizing astronomical time with calendar time.
The second order synchronzation correction is that every hundredth year, even though divisible by four, is not a leap year!
Posted by: Hrothgar

It's not quite that simple.
The year is evenly divisible by 4;
If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless;
The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

Here's a very nice plot:

Yup. And no grid means no EBT system, and no food delivery after 3 days. And they are 3rd generation welfare that sincerely believe they are entitled to it. Remember what happened to that Target when the EBT when down for 24 hours?

Remember the LA Riots? Imagine that it every urban area of every city in America.

Quite frankly, I often wonder why ISIS doesn't just hack down the EBT system. They would have the nation on its knees in 2 weeks.
