Happy Friday! Media Rattled By Coming Layoffs at the NYT

Story at Politico, if you want to search for it. The basics are as the headline suggests: Even some senior editors at the Times are rumored to be on the chopping block in an effort to cut costs, and the rest of the media is worried, because the Times already slashed staff in 2009 and so was thought to be relatively trim.

The Times has already announced up to 30 layoffs, if it couldn't secure that many voluntary separations through buy-outs, but only a few people have taken that offer. So as of January 24th come the involuntary layoffs.

The Times says this is all perfectly normal.

But sources at the paper, who spoke to POLITICO on the condition of anonymity, said this time feels different.
“Whatever sense of invincibility that Times employees still feel after the earlier rounds of cuts is being chipped away in this round,” said one Times guild member, who is not affected by the latest round of cuts.

I didn't see an explanation as to why the NYT's layoffs rattle "the media," as Politico's headline has it, but I suppose it's a matter of the Times being the canary in the coal mine. And what happens to the Times in January will happen to MSNBC and Politico in August.

They shouldn't worry too much about being fired -- after all, this is a vigorous, growing economy with lots of opportunity for work, as they reported throughout the past three years.

So I'm very surprised to see them so worried.

Try Rothman and Winter Orchard Apricot.

Reasonable price and easy to find. It's more like a liqueur than a brandy but works better in old-school cocktails like The Claridge.

As just one example, below are some of the taxes that will impact the purchase of dental braces:

Obamacare Medical Device Tax: As of Jan.1, Obamacare imposes a new tax of 2.3 percent on medical device manufacturers, including those who make dental braces. The tax is imposed on gross sales — even if the company does not earn a profit in a given year. While the tax will be paid to the IRS by the manufacturer, the tax will be passed along as a higher cost of the product, ultimately to be borne by the parent buying the braces for their child. With the cost of braces being as high as $7,625 this new tax could raise the cost of these braces by $175.

And this is only the beginning. So if braces become to expensive, does this mean we will all start to look British again?

I've noticed some episodes they do a really good job actually addressing the woman's particular figure issues and will steer them away from spaghetti straps at the like. But other times they have to work so hard to build up the gal's confidence, they put them in things that I don't think are particularly flattering if they make the woman happy.

We had a small ceremony (around 80 people) in the chapel of the large ATL church we belonged to.

I bought a lovely tea-length dress off a rack on sale in a bridal boutique. Spent around $150 for it.

To this day it is timeless and elegant. Long, lace sleeves, a sheer high neck, and pale pink under layer.

More people, young and old, complemented me on the dress on our wedding day.

We get pan handlers at grocery stores. Last week there was a guy with this whole sad story about how he came to the area to see his kids and didn't have the money to buy gas to go back home. Asked if I would give him $20 for gas. As if it wasn't bad enough that the greedy little sneak was asking for a twenty, there was a gas station on the side of the store parking lot. Of course, he didn't ask people at the gas station to directly pay for gas for him.
