Hostess Bakers Union: We Reject Your Latest Offer. Hostess Final Offer: Then We're Closing Up And You'll Get Nothing. Bakers Union: Good! Wait, What?
18,500 people are going to lose their jobs because one union decided that they thought it was possible to get blood from a stone.
"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said CEO Gregory Rayburn in a statement. Hostess will move to sell its assets to the highest bidder. That could mean new life for some of its most popular products, which could be scooped up at auction and attached to products from other companies. A letter that Hostess sent to its network of stores that carry its product said it expects "there will be great interest in our brands." But it said it could not give a time frame for when the sales would take place and its products would be available again. But even if those brands are bought and restarted, the Hostess workers will not get their jobs back. "The industry has overcapacity. We're overcapacity. Our rivals are overcapacity," said Rayburn in an interview on CNBC. Asked if the shutdown decision could be reversed if the Bakers' union agreed to immediately return to work, he responded, "Too late."If feel bad for the workers who weren't part of the idiotic bakers union but have zero sympathy for the idiots who were. Hostess was already in bankruptcy, they were out of money, broke, finished. They had a plan to try and claw their way back and the bakers said, "no". What was Hostess offering?
The concessions, which affect both the bakery union and Teamsters, call for cuts in wages and benefits of 27 percent to 32 percent over the five-year contract, with an immediate wage cut of 8 percent, the bakery union said. The company stopped contributing to workers' pensions last year. The bakery union represents about 5,680 Hostess workers, about 30 percent of Hostess' total work force.Pretty steep cuts but still 68% to 73% > 0%. Union idiots are free to choose this course of action but they are also going to have to live with the consequences of that choice. The important thing is that these people get no public assistance benefits whatsoever. In this economy there is no reason that people struggling to get by should subsidize people who throw away jobs. People voted for irresponsibility, now they must get it. No soft landings, no pity. It's time for harsh lessons to be learned.

There's a cumulative effect fromthis type of massive 'layoff' and/or bankruptcy, too. Many of the workers in related companies and jobs around nation the will be out of work or have their hours cut, as a result, Plus, if those workers in related businesses aren't employed, they won't be buying stuff from *other* companies and businesses, who will then be forced to cut their own workforce in order to stay competitive, and so on...
Add situations like this to the massive layoffs which are already beginning as a result of Obamacare...

And this is sort of the gray area of the free market. If management does this, then yes it is irresponsible considering the impact on the company and the employees. BUT... ultimately, it's the management (as represented by the people who own majority of stock in the company, i.e. the board) that actually OWNS the company and are beholden to no one but themselves on a purely legal level.
They are free to do with the company as they will - run it effectively to make a profit or make mistakes and run it into the ground. What is debatable is the morality/ethics of the issue. Something that liberals seek to regulate and control.
I do not know enough about Hostess and it's management/operations to comment on the actions of the directors. But for a union to decide to kill the company as opposed to taking pay cuts - drastic as they might have been - is completely irresponsible and IMMORAL.

In fact, I wish GM had done this decades ago with the UAW. Instead of giving into their insane demands - even in the good times of the early to mid 60's - they should have just threatened that they would shutter their doors.
Lawsuits and threats from the gubmint would ensue, no doubt. But who knows? It might have been a bit painful, but I think it would have taught a valuable lesson to the country and the world.

I am so sick and tired of people bashing Romney and bashing the GOP message. And sick of the GOP grasping for straws at how they are losing voters. And Susana Martinez whom I like very much, talks about sitting down with voters and asking them "what they want" and how can we earn their vote. Susana, they want free abortions, free birth control, food stamps, $60k jobs straight out of college. We KNOW what they want. Here's the ish. There is nothing we can do about it.
This was just reiterated to me this morning, while reading about Hostess going under. This company is struggling to get by, but is still able to employ 18,000 people. But, the unions have to be greedy and selfish, and it destroys the company. Is this economy, is now, really the time to be making demands and being unreasonable? These unions are more worried about squeezing every last dime out of the Man, than they are about saving jobs and saving an American company. Pathetic.

Full liquidation means also discharging any current and future obligations. So all those retirees who were drawing pensions? Yeah, they don't get pensions anymore. Retiree health benefits? Gone. COBRA insurance? Doesn't apply to companies that liquidate through bankruptcy. Unemployment? Likewise.
Full liquidation SUCKS for all current and prior employees.
And that doesn't even get into the ancillary losses- how many tons of flour and sugar does Hostess use in a day? How many gallons of gasoline did their trucks use on their deliveries?

I see alot of folks on this board screaming for the R's to not allow a tax raise, any raise as it will hurt the economy. Well, we are headed for recession-depression regardless. So, let it burn. The R's should set the line at $500,000 to protect the middle class and small business and let Obama tax the shit out of da rich. Da rich voted for him, just web search "8 of 10 wealthiest counties in America vote for Obama", so give em what they want, raise their taxes and eliminate all their deductions. 2) The teamsters union accepted the offer, so even they saw the writing on the wall.

Bad night, just woke up, but I do have something to add.
This has been going on for a couple of years. Hostess had its first problem a few years ago when it revamped its snack foods to be healthier. It bought a whole new production line to make the healthier snacks but they apparently tasted like shit because they didn't sell. Plus, there were the usual problems with getting a brand new line up and running efficiently. That put Hostess behind the eight ball about two years ago.
Management tried to work out the production problems and return to its core products in response. An article I read about six months ago said production was up and their core products were selling well. Hostess had a chance at making a comeback after their triage.
Then the unions decided they wanted what they wanted more than their jobs. And the rest, as they say, is history.

I have found no one who negotiates on behalf of my labor better than I do myself.
General rule of thumb: If your negotiator is negotiating on the behalf of a group that is larger than you, it is unlikely that they are negotiating in YOUR best interests. Unless you are a hot chick.

There is more going on here to boot, this is a showdown, but I dont have enough info to make an accurate analysis. Hostess is privately owned, the bakers thought they had a buyer but the deal required a better union agreement, so they thought hostess was bluffing, Hostess will sell the brands, the shelf space alone that they own is worth a fortune, but keeping that shelf space requires product be on the shelf, for them to shut down operations means they have several months product in stock to ship to stores, or they are well and truly going nuclear on the union in a mutually assured destruction move.

Hostess/International Bakeries has gone through bankruptcy reorganizaton twice in the last dozen years. The company grew in the 70's and 80's through buying up a bunch of regional bakery companies--each of which had its own labyrinth of union contracts and work rules. I think that at the peak Hostess had more than 300 different union contracts with four or five hundred sets of work rules. The company would go into bankruptcy and be bought out of bankruptcy by some investing group.
But they never could shed all their union contracts and work rules. And now the industry is faced with overcapacity. Hostess is a high cost producer. Maybe Hostess could have staggered on a little longer with the union labor concessions they sought--maybe not. And of course Queen Moochelle was on a rampage against junk food--and what's more of a junk food than a Twinkie?
This time Hostess will go for straight liquidation. Shut the plants, sell off the pieces, void the labor contracts--and the pension obligations. Every job will be lost--union and white collar management.
Somebody will buy the brands--Wonder Bread, Twinkies, Hostess cupcakes and all that. The product will be produced in other plants--by other workers. The Hostess labor unions have diddled themselves to an extent--maybe some of their members will get jobs back in a former Hostess bakery plant--but they sure as hell won't get the same pay, and they won't be part of a union.

That was my suggestion re Obamacare but nobody listened to me. The R's in Washington should have endlessly repeated things like, "If you are unhappy with your doctor or treatment, it's Obama and his party's fault!"

Kneejerk Liberal Assumption #1: Anyone who is against you is evil/stupid.
This is taught ad nauseam in the schools, and it is the primary reason that nothing can ever get done (except through Liberal strongarming). You just cannot have a conversation or true compromise with that assumption is place for more than half the country, so nothing will improve until that assumption is overthrown.

In Austin, there is already a trailer-based outlet that sells high-end cupcakes (called "Hey Cupcake!")
With the attention being focused on Hostess, it would be a good time for a business to sell filled cupcakes in the oblong twinkie shape.
Also high-quality analogues of the other hostess products.
Start local, then expand.

Also, how is the mismanagement of a brand essentially to placed entirely on the fault of the workers? Marketing planning, distribution contracts and other top down activities should have been incorporated by management, especially if you are paying a group of six figured salaries to MBA educated professionals who are tasked with running a business to profit by means of management and strategy for growth not simply reducing operational expense and basically padding your margins.
In the area of pension, why can't the Union simply forgo this and seek out 401k packages for their workforce like the rest of us? Why is it one way or the other and we couldn't have put together a more creative package?
Lastly, I feel for the families in this unfortunate result and yes no one at the top will be suffering nearly as bad, regardless of which party or economic philosophy you support, as the lower economic bracket here. The truth is a majority will suffer from the incompetence of BOTH management/ownership and the Bakers Union.
Someone else will buy this brand and you'll see this repeated all over again unfortunately.
