Momentum and Gallup's Unreliable Generic Ballot

Not to beat a dead horse, but Jay Cost has more on Gallup's phony generic ballot polling that has been used by some candidates and many libtard bloggers to claim Democratic momentum as we enter the home stretch. Gallup just released another poll suggesting that the generic ballot is tied again.

This is the biggest reason why registered voter polls are so problematic this cycle: Republicans are much more enthusiastic to vote than Democrats, and in relatively non-stimulating midterm elections such as this, enthusiasm counts for a lot. More Gallup:

Given the usual Democratic advantages in party identification among the general public, it is rare for Republicans to lead on the generic ballot among registered voters. This was the case even when Republicans were the majority congressional party from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. Turnout is crucial in midterm elections. With at least 80% of Americans registered to vote but only about half that number likely to vote in the midterm elections, registered voter and actual voter preferences can differ significantly.

All things considered, I’m not entirely sure why Gallup would even put this number of registered voters out there. Clearly, it thinks the GOP has a lead in voter preferences for the House. Why publish a poll that shows a dead heat? On top of that, in the previous six cycles (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 200, Gallup had already released its likely voter generic ballot by this point in the cycle. Its first likely voter model of this cycle is not due out until early October. That’s pretty peculiar.

I do not know what explains this delay, but regardless: be wary of registered voter polls from this point forward.

Plenty more at that link, click over and read the whole thing.

My recent nattering about momentum, Gallup's unreliable generic ballot, and framing poll results are here and here.

9 If you poll 'registered voters' it allows for the fraudulent ballots dems have increasingly come to rely on in recent elections, so maybe it isn't too inaccurate.

10 Interesting coverage of the WholeBunchofLoonsApalooza from AP. They say "thousands" are there, then point out that some 400 "groups" (they don't mention the Communists, Che-fans and related fringe-of-the-fringes groups) among them.

18 Anyone in Georgia? Anyone feel competent to tell me why I should vote for Nathan Deal other than he has an R by his name? Yes, I will vote for him because he has an R by his name but I'd like to know more than the absolutely next to nothing I know about the Invisible Man. Yes, he has a 8 point lead over Barnes, but how? I haven't a clue.

I live in the Savannah area and I have not seen a single campaign sign or the first TV commercial or heard a singly radio ad. I commute 50 miles to work so that's a lot of territory for signs and a lot of time with the radio on and the TV is on a lot at home. However, Roy Barnes has been saturating both AM radio and the TV with constant Deal Is the Debile ads.

I want to know about Deal, that's all... I simply want to know about him.... And what is weirder, when I ask I get...
a. A lecture about how bad our current POTUS is (or any Dem one has been).
b. How bad Roy Barnes is and how EVIL I am for asking about Deal.
c. How good Sonny Perdue (our current governor is).
d. Rants against me because I'm asking question and WHAT!! there are lots of ads for Deal, what planet do I live on!?
e. Multiple 20,000 word epistles on conservatism, the evils of the world we live in, how we all must vote the Dems out at all costs.

Not ONE answer about Deal, who he is, what he's done, why should anyone vote for him (other than he has an R by his name).

I'm voting for Deal, but dammit, the more idiot and asshole responses I get to an honest "Why should I vote for him?" Makes me want to strangle the idiots and assholes who think that just an R is enough.

Thank you, Rant Off....
Now I'm going to fix more Sangria.

PS- I posted a similar rant on my FB page and it appears from my friend's responses I'm not the only Georgian feeling puzzled and perplexed.

20 Nice to see the Gallup Generic brought down a peg. We have to take into account who does the polls so we can take them with the appropriate grain of salt. For those concerned about the recent CNN poll showing Liza Minkowski within 2 of Joe Palin-Miller in Alaska, Hillbuzz did a good takedown of that poll.

The conclusions:

1) They undersampled 18-34 year olds (who lean Miller)
2) They oversampled 60+ year olds (who lean Minnelli)
3) They oversampled Anchorage (which leans Minnelli)
4) They undersampled the brush (which leans Miller)

It launches PPP ahead for credibility after nailing DE-Primary, MA-Senate.

Zogby lost all credibility with his idiocy in 2000 and 2004. Gallup fucks this up, they lose it too.
Note that few if ANY bloggers are even getting reved about that stupid Newsweek poll with RV showing the dems up 5. Even the liberals can smell the shit and at this late in the game it DOES NOT HELP THEM- it discourages Democrats from showing up if they think they have it in the bag anyway.

Anyone in Georgia? Anyone feel competent to tell me why I should vote for Nathan Deal other than he has an R by his name?

Georgia is going to gain a House seat in the next reapportionment. An R Governor is more likely to support gerrymandering that favors the Republican Party in the redistricting process. Even though Georgia Ds may be more conservative than some Rs, we've seen how effective the Blue Dog Democrats were in this last session of Congress. Money talks, and the Blue Dogs ultimately (mostly) opted for party over principle, as they realized the financial support from the national Dem organizations depended on party loyalty.

Bottom line: more Rs = good, because even though a lot of Rs are squishy RINOs, the overall R platform is always more conservative than the overall D platform. Having an R Governor helps this cause in a redistricting year. A squishy R that can be arm-twisted into following the party line is better than a conservative D that can be arm-twisted into following his party line. Then, the following election, local activists can attempt to primary the squishy R.

Big picture: we can move the Overton Window to the right. It's artificially too far to the left right now. We need to change this dynamic.

I do hope somebody got a screen capture of the original lead-in photo featuring the 8/28 Rally crowd. Beck would have much fun lampooning CSPAN over than little "factual error."

Okay,. see afdter the Civil War the Democrats in the south enacted laws which required a poll tax to vote and also legibilty requirements knowing blacks had not been schooled and were predominantly illiterate. It effectively blocked free blacks from voting. Once this was repaired we now have flaming liberals jumping on even common sense requirements such as showing a drivers license as a new 'poll tax', hence discrimminatory. That's how they make sure anmyone can vote no matter what. We're trying to turn this around. I have to show my license in Virginia to vote and I like that.

You'll get no arguments from us. Look at the Al Franken stolen election in Minnesota in '08. They "found" uncounted votes in the trunks of cars for Pete's sake. Then, all they needed to do is shop around for a sympathetic judge to allow them. It's just a very cynical game.

133 112 Nope,

This is what motor-voter and the push to increase absentee voting does. It is a lot easier to find a box of a thousand ballots with just enough to tip the result when the people who supposedly cast the ballots don't even have to show at a polling place and show an ID. You have huge lists of registered voters telling you which ones didn't show, and all you do is mark up some convenient ballots for those people and find them in a car trunk or stick it in the van taking the votes to the counting place.

The key is to get lots of uninterested and unmotivated people registered so you have some room to work your ballot magic. Say hello to rock the vote, motor-voter, and other fraud factories. And with dead people, just read the obits and sign them up for absentee.

Why does anyone pay any attention to Gallup at all? They placed 17th out of 20 pollsters in 2008 while Rasmussen placed #1.

And this season we have seen 16 point swings in the generic from them in a matter of weeks if not days? It is a complete joke. Trusting Gallup is like trusting the New York Times because of the name they built back when they actually reported the news.
