My dad was an Army beachmaster on Okinawa. He went in before the first wave and directed artillery. Then he directed beach traffic. About 35 years later he met the guy who almost killed him with a short round and they laughed about it

He was on a ship waiting for the invasion when the bombs went off. Like you, I'm only here because of them.

My dad also landed on a Dole pineapple plantation (purple beach Mindanao IIRC) and got dysentery from all of the pineapples and bananas. It took decades before he'd eat them again.

63 I'm afraid that at the time of that video, my Dad was just 11 years old and in Czechoslovakia. He does have vivid memories, though, of the bombing of Dresden - how right over his hometown of Roudnice the allied bombers would meet up into squadrons circling overhead, before flying like a straight shot for Dresden, which is right over the horizon from there. The night sky glowed bright red for three nights.

He also remembers walking around Terezin, the so-called "model" concentration camp not far from Roudnice. What he saw horrified him - the war was over, but no one had yet bothered to clear out the piles of corpses, shoes, even hair. Anyone that argues that the Holocaust wasn't really all that bad has no idea what the hell they're talking about.

They had lots of pictures and artifacts but what was really interesting to me was the description of the US having a wild party for days at the end of WWII. It was one helluva celebration! Nobody in the US was apologizing for ANYTHING. Everyone was very, very happy.

On V-J day the word went out to Navy journalists to record the celebrations. So his detachment was called down to the piers and they formed up a giant V-J, the photo was taken and they were dismissed. Not many Navy nurses on Adak to celebrate with.

Fantastic! That was exactly 5 days after my seventh birthday. I was down the street playing with Linda Lou V____, the Methodist preacher's daughter when the fire siren started going off. We saw folks coming out of the grocery, hardware, and dry goods store into the street, and couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally, someone started down the street away from town toward us and we asked what was going on - why is the fire siren on? They said, "The Japs have surrendered!" We started squealing and dancing around. We couldn't think what to do next, because we knew we couldn't leave the yard. So, she got on her small two-wheeler, and I took her old big tricycle, and we rode in circles on the street in front of her house for a long time. We would get off the bikes periodically to hug each other and dance around some more. Everyone stayed in the street, yelling for the longest time. I think I remember her mother coming out to see what in the world we were doing in the street, and then she clapped her hands and celebrated with us. Quite a day! I had lived in fear of Hitler and Hirohito (sp?) all of my remembered life. I couldn't even imagine a life without war.(Side story) The song playing in the background was one I first heard in a movie - can't remember which one. About a year later, I think, when someone shot Colonel Tuck, I thought my heart would explode. I remember walking all over my yard, even out behind Mother's garden by Mr. Dunavant's field, singing that song to Col. Tuck. "I'll Remember You" I could hardly stand to hear that song for years after that. Mom
