I may be a total fool for believing this, but I'm at peace with it: I've talked to a lot of people in my neighborhood about voting this fall. A surprising number of them who had never voted before in their lives registered to vote in the last big election because Obama was on the ballot. They are not interested in voting this November, because he is not. It escapes their understanding that he needs those who support his policies in Congress to make those policies happen. I wonder how this small sampling represents the general mood in the country.

The Dems (Hoyer) is referring to the expiring Bush tax cuts and how letting the Bush tax cuts expire would be essentially a Republican tax increase.

I may be a total fool for believing this, but I'm at peace with it: I've talked to a lot of people in my neighborhood about voting this fall. A surprising number of them who had never voted before in their lives registered to vote in the last big election because Obama was on the ballot. They are not interested in voting this November, because he is not. It escapes their understanding that he needs those who support his policies in Congress to make those policies happen. I wonder how this small sampling represents the general mood in the country.

I hope so, too, Blue Hen. I just know that, leading up to the Presidential election, I had terrible feelings of unease, and the closer to November we get, the more calm I feel about the outcome. Not that I'm psychic or anything, and we all still expect some kind of October Surprise. I'm just thinking that, as desperate as they are becoming, they will probably overreach themselves by far. Granted even the Mark VIII still won't stand up to a speech by the annointed one, but it's the best we've got.
Now I think you gentleman in RD should be working on the "Now let me be perfectly clear" fix for the Mark IX so hopefully we'll be able to produce one that doesn't go up like a roman candle, rather than wasting your time posting on blogs and chasing hot russian spies.

Why were the Bush cuts temporary?
They were temporary because the legislation passed as a reconciliation bill because the Senate could not get the 60 votes required for cloture under the normal process. A reconciliation bill can only impact revenues out to 10 years. So it HAD to expire after 10 years.
The Republicans tried many times to make the cuts permanent but they Senate Democrats wouldn't get on board. To frame this as somehow the Republicans increasing the tax is a lie. It is because rules dictate that reconciliation bills can only last for 10 years and the Democrats blocked the standard process.

There are no such thing as the "Bush tax cuts." Bush did not "cut taxes." There is no "accepted standard tax rate" for him to use as a base for "cutting." He simply reset tax rates to a lower level. Therefore the Dems are planning to raise taxes, not "eliminate Bush's ill-considered tax cuts."
Maybe it's nit-picking, but it bugs me to hear the MFM and the liberals push the "tax cuts" thing. It makes it sound somehow more reasonable for them to raise taxes because they'ye not, y'know, "raising taxes." They're just letting "tax cuts expire."
