Miss California's Racy Photos

Alice H. tipped me this a while ago. I've been sitting on it, trying to figure out if I should even acknowledge it and, if so, how to deal with it.

It is, of course, crushing to me that a woman in beauty contests who struts in a bikini would ever take a cheesecake shot (likely for purposes of getting legitimate modeling gigs).

Furthermore, it is hypocritical that a supposedly "Christian" woman should ever have a thought about sex, or show off her body in any way. "Christians" women, of course, wear burka.

Everyone knows this. Google it.

They also don't have sex, which is why Christians are demographically doomed, having no children at all, while the more sexually liberated quarters of the country are having kids like gangbusters.

Again, Google it.

All I know is that many beauty pageant women have had work done -- nose, lips, cheeks, breasts, buttocks -- and yet there's a rather large firestorm about this particular woman's breast enhancement. I hate to be cynical, but for some reason, I think people are leaking stuff about her -- and the media is eagerly running with those leaks -- because she dared to express an unpopular thought.

Did I say "unpopular thought"? My error. It's the majority thought in the country, but it's unpopular with those who matter, namely, those in the media-political industrial complex.

As noted admirer of the female form Perez Hilton said, she's a "dumb bitch," and deserves to be destroyed.

Maggie Gallagher of National Organization for Marriage stands by her spokeswoman:

Because Carrie honestly said what she believed in answer to a question–marriage is the union of a man and a woman– she is now the subject of ongoing character assassination. The level of hatred directed at her is astonishing. Even more astonishing is her personal courage and strength of character in the midst of these attacks. Of course Carrie is not perfect. On a personal note, as a former unwed mother, I want to say to Americans: you don’t have to be a perfect person to have the right to stand up for marriage. Nothing gay marriage advocates can do can change the fact—we all saw it on national TV—that Carrie is a young woman who surrendered all the glitter Hollywood has to offer, because she would not become the kind of person afraid to say the truth.
Through Carrie, we are also learning, the lengths some people will go to hurt and harass those who speak up for marriage.

This is Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber all over again. The media does not even need to be instructed to destroy the left's opponents; Obama's men hardly had to threaten Chrysler debthoders with such a tactic. They do it because they now consider it their jobs.

It's patriotic, you see, to destroy inconvenient citizens who oppose The Socialist, Progressive Good. Free speech is a quaint notion. It's about time everyone knew there would be serious, painful consequences for crossing the left.

The thing is, of course, they fail once again. Their charges of "hypocrisy" are contrived to justify a simple vendetta. It should be noted that no one on the right -- or anywhere -- thought that Bristol Palin's pregnancy was a good thing, or that it reflected well on Sarah Palin; it reflected badly on her, albeit to a very, very minor extent. Like everyone except The One, Palin isn't perfect; sometimes she errs, or can't control her kinda-hot teenaged daughter's sexual behavior. Not good, per se, but so minor a "failing" that most people wouldn't give it three seconds thought.

Except if you're on the left, who, when they're not urging sexual libertinism to make Caligula blush, posture as the Keepers of the Moral Flame That Warms Our Fragile Society, letting us know precisely which right-leaning people have committed gross sins against God and Nature.

But what happened there is what will happen with Prejean: Even if some on the right have mild reservations about these pictures, we're too pissed off about the media's transparent efforts to creepy stalker tactics and smear campaigns to destroy people whose biggest real sin is that of disagreeing with them. And so it will backfire.

Prejean isn't just an ally of the right anymore; she's a martyr for the cause. She's being burned at the stake by intolerant thugs, and that makes her a hero.

Has she sinned? Um, I'm pretty sure she has. I was pretty sure she had before these "shocking" photos came out. Very few Christians refuse to admit they're sinners; in fact, that's one of the first things they cop to. Because the whole idea is that they're aspiring to a standard they can never actually match -- it is foreordained they will not -- and yet aspire to it anyway.

Is she a hypocrite? I don't know; depends on her precise definitions of modest conduct and whether she aspires to that particular goal or not. Even if she does-- this is pretty small-beans "hypocrisy," the sort of "hypocrisy" we all engage in every day.

I do know that only those who profess a belief in an ideal can ever be "hypocrites." Which means that untalented, unfunny, unjustly rich Perez Hilton need never fear the charge.

Also,we may never know who has been leaking the info and directing the MSM on which way to look when digging on Prejean, but think of this:
Many people in the model industry bat on the same side of the plate as Perez Hilton, so if the agency where she shot those photos has a few of Hilton's "types", they may take it upon themselves to disseminate the material to friendly blogger (Hilton, for example) or producers/behind the scenes people on TV or in the print/tabloid media.

I think "evangelical atheists" do have that strong spirtual/quixotic impulse, but they have rejected God, and yet still have that impulse, and so channel energy and interest which would, in earlier days, be devoted to God into spreading the Gospel of Atheism.

I don't have that, so I don't care. I have I believe enough information and logic to make a gut judgment call, and if there is some new information I'll revise my belief, but as for now I have enough information to act as if i know the answer, even if my information is incomplete.

Obviously in that photo she is not wearing a top. But she's covering up her boobs. I know that in photo shoots, they just snap about a million photos, and then go through them later. I would guess, then, that it is possible that they took one of her where you can actually see her a nipple, or both even. Does this happen? If so, do they actually destroy these photos, or is it just a matter of good faith in the photographer that he will discard it?

I guess I'm wondering if the "topless" photos that they claim to have are basically something along the lines of the Christian-Bale-Terminator-Rant: something that was accidentally recorded, but in good faith should never have seen the light of day.

The latter, I think. Although you can certainly contract for ownership of a photo, and make a photographer your employee, most standard contracts, I think -- and the kind you'll sign unless you have a lawyer and a determination to change it -- will state the photographer owns, owns, OWNS the photo and can do whatever he likes with it.

Of course he will give you assurances that he's a professional and would never do such a thing... but an oral assurance doesn't trump a written contract.

I'm not a big Dr. Laura fan, but it pissed me off when people released nude photos of her in much the same way. I think the same gay sensitivity issue was at hand. Isn't that what cancelled her TV show? We saw it again with the Prop 8 thing or the threats to out gay Republicans that seem to crop up every election cycle.

I don't really want to go there and make a blanket statement because I know it would be unfair to a lot of gay people who are as offended by this behavior as I am. I agree that this tactic is going to backfire. I was ambivalent about the whole issue before I moved to California, but after a year or so of exposure to their agenda I pulled the level for Prop 8 and I would certainly do it again.

My one caveat is that the tactics of "outing" Prop 8 donors for the purposes of harassing them is effective. For professional (survival) reasons, I would never donate to a Prop 8 type of initiative.

Just a little context here. In many conservative Christian circles, particularly Catholic, women are encouraged to avoid "showing off her body" in order to avoid being seen as objects rather than whole, spiritual people (there's a reason why uniform codes are so strict even in all-girl high schools.) Goes back to the whole "temple of the Holy Spirit" thing. In this manner, dressing with reasonable modesty (I'm not talking polygamy cult-wear here) is actually a feminist act.

Since men are far more visual than women, it is considered a courtesy to men to not have your boobs and cooter falling out of your clothes; this helps them to win the battle of the spirit vs. the flesh, so to speak. And the hypocracy cuts both ways: I bet the vast majority of men who go to strip clubs or view porn would freak of if their daughters were providing the entertainment.

Now, I don't know if Carrie was raised with these specific values. But if she was, and if she professes to be a Christian and is taking topless photos-- then yes, hypocritical. As St. Francis said, "Preach the Gospel constantly, using words if necessary." BUT is she deserving of the awful treatment she's been getting? No, no, no.

I used to be much more staunch in my opinions of modesty. I still think it's very important to a Christian (men, also) and I still guard my daughters' modesty with an iron fist. But I no longer believe necessarily that someone with a different view of modesty than mine is wrong or sinful. I know too many good and Christian women who wear short, tight and skimpy. It is what I call, "a skinny rabbit".

Strictly speaking, how she was raised doesn't factor into whether she is a hypocrite or not. The key is whether she denounces these types of photo-spreads. A hypocrite is someone who denounces some certain action, but then think that it doesn't apply to himself.

She has never come out against photo-shoots like this. In fact her attempt to get into the Miss America pageant (and modeling in general) seems to indicate that she does not think ill of this type of thing. Therefore she is not a hypocrite.

People throw around the word hypocrite way too much.

Generally speaking, posing for topless photos do not jibe traditional Christian values. There's a reason people don't go to parish festivals in hopes of finding a wet T-shirt contest. But you are correct. I agree that it doesn't matter whether she was raised this way-- what matters is if she believes this behavior is anti-Christian.

If she does, then this is not, indeed, hypocritical. But what we would have then is an apparent disconnect between bouncing one's ta-tas on national television for the gratification of Donald Trump, and acting as a holistic Christian role model (and no, that does not demand perfection.) There are ways to become a model without signing up for the Miss USA paegent. (The Miss America paegent, I beleive, has stricter modesty codes.) I married into an evangelical family and network with several Christian organizations, and think I'm pretty safe in saying that most conservative Christian parents would not be comfortable with their daughters posing topless-- and in the vast majority of churches, Christians are taught to witness for Christ not only in word, but in deed.

Even that does not merit the term "hypocrite". If that is the definition of hypocrite, then all Christians are hypocrites, since we have all done something that we believe is "anti-Christian", or wrong.

A hypocrite is someone who takes a particularly vocal stand against some particular action, but somehow thinks it does not apply to himself. For example: let's imagine a Christian preacher who had at some point spoken against marital infidelity. But one night at an event, he had too much to drink and was seduced by a foxy lady. The next day he wakes up and feels terrible about this, repents, makes amends with his wife, and never does it again. I do not consider this man a hypocrite, but rather a sinner. However if he were to carry on with an affair while still preaching against infidelity, that would become hypocritical.

This is what I mean when I say that people throw around the word "hypocrite" when it is not warranted.

By the way, I don't mean to pick a fight about this, I think we basically agree. But I think my point is important.
