Well, I don't like to start the meetin' by arguing with our host's opening poster, but I do prefer a moderate (small to some) cup. My daily mug holds a measured cup. By the time I get to the bottom, the coffee's still hot. And the pot is nearby, so refills are easy. Now, if you add up all the morning's cups, that is a good size.
Good morning, stalwart Hordelings. Hope you're all well (as well as can be hoped at the moment, anyway). Severely overcast this chilly morning in NE Land o' the Red Man. It was really rough for a while, but it has calmed down a bit. She finally got divorced, and had to move in with us, which was really bad for a while. But God's grace is always at work, and we've taken the kiddos to Mass a couple of times (and will take them next week), so there's hope that their mother will return to the Church as well. We've enrolled the elder in Catholic preschool for the fall, which I'm sure she will enjoy. In fact, the idea of playing on the playground (which she has seen) was what motivated her to get serious about potty training. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Caracalla is one. Evil (just straight up evil.) Capricious. Vindictive and vicious. Problem is Caracalla did not really have a plan or goal beyond just being a piece of shit. So he ended up catching a dagger. Elagabalus captures the weird sexual/cultural fixation, but not much beyond that. I think the closest is probably Tiberius. Because while Tiberious himself sank into complete depravity, cruelty and vice, the period where the government was being controlled by Sejanus is probably closest to the current situation. The big picture is that the elites fail to understand that Americans comply with laws because they believe them to be necessary and useful, not out of fear. When you replace that unconscious, reflexive consent, you need lots of enforce compliance, and our government simply does not have that. Yet they think they do, because they've gotten away with so much so far. You might want to stock up on jars of baby food protein (i.e., chicken, turkey) for the early days following your procedure ... Check with your physician, but I believe the process of healing will be improved by protein; and the baby food meats will be easier on your "pipes" than ground meats ... Also, while the flavor of baby food meats is definitely BLAH, it is greatly improved when mixed into store-bought basic mashed potatoes ... Wishing you a speedy recovery!

One of the arguments made in Trump's defense when they tried to take him off the ballot in Colorado was that the POTUS is not subject to the 14th Amendment, it was meant for subordinate hires like cabinet officials.
In the documents case in Florida an amicus brief is also pending claiming that Jack Smith was not legally appointed because Garland lacked the authority to appoint a private citizen to the post and Smith never went through the Senate approval process. Both of these theories have largely been the result of research and arguments made by two people, a law professor at South Texas College of Law and an American Orthodox Jew former commodities trader now a law professor in Ireland. For anyone who likes nerding out on the details of what's going on this is a fascinating article. https://tinyurl.com/f5uy88m9 Posted by: JackStraw at March 23, 2024 10:06 AM (LkLld) 175

On the other hand, I am not sure I would call anything after Diocletian as healthy, since he essentially sewed the seeds of feudal serfdom and tyranny (as well as reaction to his policies doing the same.) No Standing However, in an opinion issued Thursday, Judge Jackson determined that the seven plaintiffs failed to demonstrate “that they have personally been subjected to any sort of disadvantage as individual voters by virtue of the fact that noncitizens are permitted to vote, too.” “They may object as a matter of policy to the fact that immigrants get to vote at all, but their votes will not receive less weight or be treated differently than noncitizens’ votes,” the judge wrote. “They are not losing representation in any legislative body; nor have citizens as a group been discriminatorily gerrymandered, ‘packed,’ or ‘cracked’ to divide, concentrate, or devalue their votes,” she continued. The judge concluded: “At bottom, they are simply raising a generalized grievance which is insufficient to confer standing.” Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at March 23, 2024 10:21 AM (2ovLw) 206

The Ukraine is getting mauled on the battlefield, retreating in multiple axes. The weird thing is that the same people who once posted detailed, front-wide maps of the war are now either dark, or just covering tiny segments. I'm assuming the Russians don't want to telegraph their punches and the Ukrainians don't want the West to know how badly they are losing. Last week Ukraine shelled a Russian city, and tried a strike on a refinery. Russia responded by targeting actual power generation, which is impossible to replace right now. So this may be an attempt to strike back. Also, Russian officials have started saying that they are "at war" which was something they avoided doing. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Turkey is trying to straddle the line with NATO and Russia, and stands to make money on pipelines either way, being a "host to terrorism" would muddy the water. There's a theory floating around that I tend to agree with at least in part that what we are seeing playing out in Ukraine and Russia is really all about control of oil and gas from the region. As much as the whack jobs hate oil and gas they drive the world and it shouldn't be a huge surprise that recent wars center around places like Iraq, Iran, Ukraine and Russia. Hell, one of the very first missions of the newly formed CIA in the 50s was Operation Ajax, a joint US/UK led coup to overthrow the elected leader of Iran and install the Shah and the reason was oil and look how well that has worked out for us. I agree, and found that most excellent. As you say, it's basically a one man play put on film, and it is a wonderful portrayal of CS Lewis, in his own words. The portrayal of Lewis's father gives quite a bit of insight into his own thinking. I think they had a difficult, but typically British relationship.

I am going to recommend the movie to a friend of mine. He's an Anglophile and looks a little like C.S. Lewis. He might not appreciate the religious aspects because he thinks Jesus was simply a great teacher, but this man-like Lewis didn't like going to an all boy's school and like this person I know he also studied the Classics.

++++ This also explains what is going on with Israel. Israel has a huge gas reserve with their discovery of Leviathan. They want to build a pipeline to Europe. Turkey and surprisingly (unsurprisingly?) have been strongly opposed. Turkey physically blocking it's building. This only benefits Iran and especially Russia. Maybe this is why preserving Hamas is important. Keep the Israelis in check. Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at March 23, 2024 10:50 AM (t/2Uw) 264

Brahms moved in with the Shumans when Robert was ill (Schumann probably was bipolar) and there seems to be some question as to whether they actually had a physical affair although they wrote letters to each other. 12/22/23 Cash-Strapped RNC Spent $250,000 on Limos in a Year, Finances Reveal
With $9.96 million in spending money, the RNC had less than half the $21.35 million it reported in 2016, after Donald Trump won the presidential election. But despite this, the FEC disclosures revealed that since October 21, 2022, the committee spent $256,635 on limousine cars as travel expenses. In other expenses, the RNC racked up multiple hotel bills. In 32 transactions to different branches of the Four Seasons Hotel, the RNC spent $622,204.93 on travel expenses, venue hire and catering, fundraiser supplies and parking. It also spent thousands of dollars at other hotels including Marriot Hotels and Hilton Hotels, with one Marriot Hotel transaction amounting to $659,848.52. It spent $75,000 to rent the Ritz Carlton in Dallas, Texas, in October. The amount also involved catering charges. . . Meanwhile, Van Laar's analysis also showed the RNC spent more than $70,000 on floral arrangements since October 2022 and almost $9,000 in dry cleaning. I'm not a huge fan of Trump (or any politician for that matter), but a lot of the carping about him not getting as much done looks pretty feeble these days. I mean, literally everyone around him was on the take. The whole GOP leadership, the legislators, everyone in DC was as corrupt as could be.
The amazing thing is that he got *anything* done. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at March 23, 2024 11:19 AM (llXky) Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 23, 2024 11:19 AM (XkYcA) 318

I don't know about the Russian Orthodox in Church in Russia, but I have read a number of Russian Orthodox mystics and monks and attended an Orthodox Church and they are very devout, so whether it's a veneer I expects it depends on the individual people
