THE MORNING RANT: Throckmorton’s Razor, Minuteman’s Corollary, and the Chinese Balloon
Nice. However, if I were to concisely word as a razor the point I was trying to make, it might be:
Throckmorton’s Razor: “Assume that any authority which has previously provided false data is always acting dishonestly.”But Minuteman has added an excellent corollary. Whereas I was trying to make the point that we shouldn’t have to disprove the climate data of organizations such as NASA because they have already shown they’re not trustworthy, Minuteman provides a reminder that we shouldn’t ever use those discredited “experts” in support of our positions either. Be it media “fact checkers,” or the CDC, or the intelligence community, or the World Health Organization, or NOAA, etc, those entities are too discredited to provide any validity to an argument, even if by chance they occasionally support my own argument. What Minuteman captures is that we on the right are often willing to use data produced by these same experts if it supports our position, but we shouldn’t. Thus…
Minuteman’s Corollary: “Discount everything a liar says in his argument, even if it may support your position.”Thank you, Minuteman! And while we’re talking about razors, here are some of the most famous ones: Hanlon’s Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” Occam’s Razor: “The correct explanation is usually the one made with the fewest assumptions.” Hitchen’s Razor: “What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”

The Life of Emile Zola isn't really about his life, but the Dreyfus Affair. During the libel trial against Zola, the military introduces evidence, a secret letter that proves Dreyfus' guilt, but they don't produce the actual evidence.
It's good enough for the court because the court is as corrupt as the military establishment.
It's just interesting to watch that play out.

Probably plenty of them thought about it and decided to keep their jobs and reimbursements. Andrew Bridgen gave a great interview in which he said that many physicians disagree with what's happening but were afraid (still!) to say so in public. Of course lefties on twitter say that if they don't have names, it's a lie. They catch you both ways. I assume many did know this was wrong but went ahead. Someone I know was told by their doctor to get the shot...but then the doctor called on his private cell and said "don't". And this was early on.

I would venture to say that somewhere in the range of 60-80% of practicing physicians know primarily that which they have been taught, as opposed to what they have learned (or experienced first hand). So there is a great deal of reliance on received knowledge. The default position early on was to defer to Fauci et al. I am starting to get a little sense that much like the informed public, doctors are sensing the validity of Thhrockmorton's Razor and waking up to the fact that they too have been lied to. It is still on the down low, but I think it is there.
Not just vis-a-vis COVID, but also in regard to the membership of the AAP beginning some pushback against the Rich Levine, MD transgender teen philosophies championed by the AAP.
But I'm with you, that trust has been lost. It will take a lot to rebuild it.

This is a good point to bring up a pet peeve of mine: the debasement of an actual tool and it's cooption by the gays.
Chaps make sense in the context that they were invented for. They protect your legs while riding a horse through brush and keep you from getting either you or your pants damaged. In function, there is no reason to have them fully enclosed- indeed, you would prefer them not to be because that would be hot as fuck. So, assless chaps are actually good function.

Some Drones can and do operate up there, out of reach of most ground and even airborne counter measures. Normal ceiling for most commercial air traffic is 40,000 ft or less.
Standard altitude separation between aircraft, even those on same/similar/converging/opposite paths is 2000feet.
IE: you could safely fly 5 aircraft in every 10,000 feet of vertical airspace.

As far as the IC is concerned, I believe it should operate independently of any Political branch. It's job is to find answers to specific unknowns about adversaries and potential adversaries, and refine that information into actionable and/or accurate intelligence for decision-makers. Leadership needs to know what is known, and what is unknown so they can act accordingly.

Sure, it was about time for my son to "graduate" from his pediatrician anyway -- but I was hoping to have an amicable and professional transition away from a doctor who we had been with since 1999 when elder son of Doof was born.
It's also why I tend to wait very long (weeks / months) to see a doctor if I have an illness or injury. I just flat out don't trust them. For the most part, they just seem to push whatever prescription the pharma rep out in the waiting room has pushed on them.

The medical profession itself has also changed. Doctors are no longer making decisions based on their own knowledge, but have directions from corporate that they MUST follow, or be fired. Very few Doctors now run their own practices.... even down to which drug to give, they are given a choice on a computer menu... and KNOW that if they do not follow corporate guidelines, IF there is any adverse reaction in the case (which happens all the damn time), corporate will NOT back them up.
Watched this exact situation lead to my long time family Doctor, finally retiring (I worked for a company that did his IT support, before they were bought out as a practice... watched the changeover in medical climate there).

Yeah a lot of people forget that. A Razor isn't an argument. It's a mental shortcut to reduce the number of alternatives considered by eliminating those that are "unlikely" to be true. It makes no guarantee that it doesn't eliminate the correct alternative. And at times different Razors (Hanlon and Occam come to mind) contradict on what should be eliminated.
Razors aren't reasoning. They are a substitute for reasoning when either you are too lazy, or simply lack the time to properly consider all alternatives.

Sadly not. It's more like a "where do you land by default" scale. Scully was "Default trust." Mulder was "Default distrust." Both could - and did - adjust any given opinion in any given transaction given adequate evidence. Mulder trusted - transactionally - his secret informants in the government. Scully distrusted - transactionally - specific known-bad players.
But Scully's existence is getting scarcer as time goes on. Those that "trust" are now ideologically committed to believing anything their guy says, no matter what. The "I trust by default unless you demonstrate I shouldn't" contingent appears to be shrinking, and most of them are moving into the "I don't trust you unless you demonstrate that I should" group. Some of the latter group have shifted into a largely new "I don't trust you, no matter what, for any reason" group.

The President can fire any officer he wants to and there is no legal recourse anyone can use to stop him.
Oh sure they will get a Hawaiian Judge to tie it up in the courts for years but eventually he would win because congress has already said that is within the powers of the President. They did a big investigation after MacArthur got fired, and said yes he can do that but he should not have done it.

Catastrophically so. Low trust also limits the amount of development and progress you can achieve. Doing complex things requires trust by default because so many people in many different places are involved.
And the expenses mount in *everything.* Your big, wooden house without gates or perimeter walls is possible only because of high trust. In low trust, your house needs to be smaller, stronger and have bars on the windows. It will also cost more than what you have now.
That's just one thing. There are many, many things. It all adds up and adds up quickly.

I'm sure others have noted by now that the pilot easily could have put a few rounds of 20mm in the balloon itself and observe the effects, adding more rounds if necessary. This would have probably resulted in a much more desirable slower descent and more visible for recovery as well as more intact electronics.
Unless, of course, you didn't want to recover intact electronics.

Yep, the right has been doing this with the Plandemic "data" for the past 3 years. All the data is garbage. They have been lying about everything -- "cases", "deaths" (died with vs died from), etc -- since the beginning.
Yet you see people putting up charts all over showing "this proves that masks do not prevent rise in 'COVID cases'". Actually, no it does not prove anything. Because all the data for "cases" has been garbage. Just like they did for the definition of "vaccine", they also changed the definition of a "case". It started out as "COVID+ test result & symptoms". But when there were millions of asymptomatic COVID+ people, they changed the definition of a "case" to capture all the asymptomatic people to keep the "case" count high to hype the "crisis". Not to mention, the PCR tests for determining "cases" was admitted to be garbage with 50% false positive rate. So none of the data proves anything at all.
