The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

I think this is exactly what the academy deserves. We should support this movement and help to expand it to every campus in America. I want to see American universities become exactly like the inner-city hellholes that are a direct result of The Great Society and the left's rampant racist nanyy-statism.

Alinsky was a great man, and we need to embrace his teaching:
RULE 4: "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules."

'Cops Off Campus Coalition' kicks off 'Abolition May' as professors across the country vow to cancel classes in support of movement

From the petition...and oh boy it is a perfect distillation of leftist newspeak!

A portion of the petition pledges:

As a member of a campus community, I am horrified that — amidst a global pandemic, relentless state and vigilante violence against black, brown, and Indigenous people, and national calls for abolition — schools across North America have committed to increasing police budgets.

College police forces are increasingly militarized, and I support the nationwide call to demand cops off our campus to make our university truly safe and free for all, and I will not cross the picket line.

The petition demands:

1. We want ALL cops off of ALL campuses.
2. We demand the Land back
3. We demand investments in community safety and education

This is great! So the 50ish professor with the longish gray hair and affecting middle-class counter-culture accoutrements will no longer be safe in the ivory tower, where he was once insulated from the policies he supported. I WANT to see him mugged on the way to class, and have nobody to whine to except the campus de-escalation committee that meets every other Tuesday. Oh, maybe a rapid-response social worker can show up 15 minutes after he got knocked down and kicked in the head to help him find his teeth and get him a ride to the emergency room.

And notice they don't stop with the absolutely unmanageable demand to get rid of policing. They move on to the expected anti-imperialist cant about taking back the land! Of course they can't stop until they demand the typical blather about spending money in "the community," whatever that is.

By all means...let's get rid of the University of Chicago police and the USC DPS and Berkeley's UC Police and every other inner-city campus police department. When the soccer moms of America see their sons and daughters raped and robbed and murdered maybe they will see the light.

Probably not, but it will be worth it to be able to say, "I told you so!"

If we just give the corrupt inner city school systems, that fail to teach their students anything even with astronomically high budgets, more money and more administrative staff, then there will be no crime.

We just need to create the new Socialist Man with indoctrination, then we will expel the capitalistic diseases of theft and murder from our utopia.

++++
Blah, blah, blah.

The students will regret this, though none have the context to understand why. Modern campus police forces - which are usually private forces owned by the university but with actual, legitimate, delegated police powers - are there to protect the student body. This protection is in two forms:
1. They have extremely permissive jurisdiction and they keep bad elements off campus. You think "campus rape culture" is a thing? Just wait until there's no one manning the barricades.
2. They handle offenses in-house to keep students *out* of the systems at large. Getting hassled by the campus cops sucks, but they're really there to slap students on the wrist, handle any problems "internally" and keep them out of the real jurisdiction surrounding them.

The latter point might not matter much now that so many police forces are left-aligned, though.

Thanks to the vigilance of our university police, and major tragedy was averted 3 years ago when a student very nearly implemented a mass shooting on my local campus. The increased video surveillance has also led to safer campus and has put at least one would-be rapist behind bars. So there is that. As with all groups, I think it's unfair to lump EVERY university in with the bad seeds.

Now a school *payment* strike, that would be effective, but I somehow doubt that a person is going to spend 18 years of their lives busting their balls to get into X school just to turn around and effectively unenroll themselves because patriarchy or whatever

72 Here's another example where university police come in handy: a couple of months ago the chief diversity officer on our campus was arrested on charges of CP possession. Thankfully, he's been removed from campus, fired, and now awaiting trial. Local PD *might* have done something, but it would probably have been far uglier. There have been other incidents over the years where the campus police have been able to remove undesirable elements from campus without raising much of a fuss. They get turned over to the city/county for trial afterwards. The system works pretty well where I live and I'd rather not see it change.

159 One of the major differences between public high school and college is that the onus of learning shifts more toward the student. In high school teachers in general care more that everyone of their students learns the material, often college professors care to the extent they are willing to teach, but they aren't going to chase someone down. If you want to pay for college, skip classes, or do the absolute minimum for a grade, a college professor isn't generally going to pressure you as a high school teacher might. The school already got it's money and they aren't going to care if mom and dad are pissed their child didn't learn the material.

Thus students who struggle to pay tuition, books and classes are short changed when professors cancel lectures, lectures the students paid for. For those for whom college is about learning and not just some piece of paper saying you learned, this kind of crap has to piss them off.

202 There was a Philip K. Dick book I read some time ago (I *think* it was called "Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said") that was, in his fashion, a dystopian alternate reality in a police state. In that vision of the oppressive, impoverished future, Dick envisioned the colleges as essentially voluntary penal colonies. Anyone could go in, but like a lobster trap no one was ever allowed to leave. Anyone caught giving material aid to the campuses was thrown into a prison camp in Alaska. The colleges ran absolutely wild and feral, but were walled off and contained.

He might have been on to something, everything else notwithstanding...

That's the magic of the MSM. If anyone but a committed leftist had said, "No amendment to the Constitution is absolute." reporters would hound them until the end of time, asking why they think slavery should be brought back.

He'd be forced to clarify and apologize and the story would still be that he didn't clarify enough at the right time or they'd fucking flat out lie about the clarification like they did with "good people on both sides" or the Trump admonition to peacefully protest at the White House where they simply cut out the peacefully part.

286 re: voting in all local elections

THIS IS TRUE. These truly are the people who can (and will) make your day to day / month to month life suck.

These are the people who set your local tax rates. These are the people who get to spend your money. And believe me, your town is probably a lot like mine. These are villains and scoundrels just like the ones sent to Washington, but they are counting on everyones attention being kept on DC and not them.

Learn how your town finances work. Learn how the tax rates are set. Learn whose hands are on the levers of power to adjust those things. And then yes - vote accordingly. Vote accordingly, and educate your neighbors and friends. Odds are they have no clue either. Some may want to stay that way, but most don't even know where to begin.

Here's a small test-case. Go to your city hall and say you want to submit a Public Information Request for all emails between the mayor and the city attorney in the past 30 days. See what kind of reaction you get. See how hard (or easy) they make it for you.

You are 100% entitled to that information. See how willingly they give it to you. It will tell you VOLUMES.

Immediately where my head went as well. Sure CBD, let 'em get mugged... but that's not the issue. That will never get attention, but other crime will. The progressives decry their various perceived pandemics of selective violence but then remove the constraints that prevent its spread because they want that kind of violence, it advances their agenda. The reason campus police forces are militarized is because campuses are the definition of a soft target where bad people can inflict massive casualties using any number of perfectly legal instrumentalities. You need an on-call, dedicated team capable of responding to those types of threats around a campus that may span several square miles if you are serious about mitigating those types of threats. Unarmed para-police are just one more person for a radical to run over with their van. They want mass shootings to give them the political capital they need for frontal attacks on the Bill of Rights.

290 Small towns. What was the town in CA where the entire city gubmint was on the grift? It was something like council members embezzling $250K a year. Democrats all.

291 Workshop this. Watch your fingers:

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?

I'm probably being an ass, but I've always thought that one needed work, too. Again, I get what the author is going for, but for me it just doesn't work.

295 By all means...let's get rid of the University of Chicago police and the USC DPS and Berkeley's UC Police and every other inner-city campus police department.

I wonder if Georgia Tech is on board with this. I'd be shocked if Vanderbilt wasn't, though.

I went to the U of Chicago for graduate school in the 80s. Even then, with the Uni Police being (at least according to rumor) the second largest police force in the state after the Chicago police, who also patrolled the area, they still had a rape map in the campus newspaper every week to document assaults on students.

Good luck with that in these days.
