Daily Tech News 4 May 2021

Top Story

  • Future tense, present tense, what's the difference?
"Today, approximately 3.5 million premises across Australia can access the NBN Home Ultrafast wholesale speed tier with wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps, on demand."
Oh, really? I'd like to sign up then.

I can't? No fucking surprise, because it took you bastards twelve fucking years just to wire up suburban Sydney.

I do at least have 80M down and 40M up now, though, which is a hell of an improvement from the 14/2 I had a year ago.

I mentioned yesterday the clean transition between the opening argument and sparse visuals in Dominion Tank Police, and the show itself and the opening theme. But I don't think that transition has ever been handled better than in the first episode of Bubblegum Crisis.

It introduces the story and all the major characters with nothing more than a song and a few lines of police radio chatter. It doesn't hurt that the show owes a huge debt to Blade Runner, so the setting is already somewhat familiar, but it's still one of the most memorable anime openings ever.

Tech News

  • You can still get the Ryzen 3700X. (AnandTech)

It may not be the very latest technology, but it's a solid chip, and it's reasonably priced. The i9-11900K is 12% faster on multi-threaded workloads, but costs twice as much - and even in theory uses twice as much power.

  • Nvidia's new 3080 Ti has started showing up on this side of the International Date Line which is slightly odd because the difference is only a day and launch date isn't for two weeks. (Tom's Hardware)

Right now, checking my local store, I can get a 3060 for $1000 or a 3090 for $3000. One model of each. That's it.

There are several AMD 6700XT and 6900XT cards in stock, though. AMD's current cards aren't as good at mining as Nvidia's, even when you line them up by similar game performance, so they are slightly less impossible to obtain.

The difference in mining performance is probably down to AMD's new design, where they reduced memory bandwidth and compensated with a very large (96MB or 128MB, depending on the card) on-chip cache. That works fine for most games, but poorly for crypto mining.

  • Macromedia Flash is disappearing from Windows in July. (Bleeping Computer)

Adobe abandoned it at the end of last year, so that's no surprise.

If you just realised that you'll never again be able to play Penguin Golf, fear not. Blue Maxima's Flashpoint has you covered.

All the Penguin Golf games and 70,000 more, plus 8000 Flash animations. You'll need a little over a terabyte of disk to download the entire archive, though. It's a 478GB 7Z file that uncompresses to 532GB of individual games.

They also have an installer that just downloads the games you want; that's a mere 500MB download and 2GB minimum disk space.

  • Sony has taken an ownership stake in Discore and will be integrating it into their PlayStation Network. (Polygon)

Again, not a surprise. Discord recently broke off acquisition talks with Microsoft, and it's unlikely they'd have done that without some other funds being on the table.

  • Awful high-tech fashion company meets awful game exclusivity company in court, observers try to figure out how they can both lose. (9to5Mac)

This is Epic's lawsuit against Apple over the business practices of the App Store. Epic paints Apple as overbearing all-devouring monopolistic bastards, which is true. Apple in turn paints Epic as bottom-feeding vermin who want everything for free and never produced anything of value, which is also true, but - and this is the one point in Epic's favour - not illegal.

Eight Episode AMV Video of the Day

There aren't a lot of AMVs for the original Bubblegum Crisis, partly because it's an older show, but mostly because the show itself is pretty much a six hour AMV.

Here's Soldier Girls from episode one.

Solar Freaking Roadways Video of the Day

Solar panels have their place, particularly if you live somewhere horrifyingly sunny like northern Australia or southern Spain. But where that place most definitely is not is directly on the fucking ground.

3 Oh wow, the Kickstarter for AnimEigo's remastered MADOX-01 has exceeded $129,000 US and has 26 days to run.

The MADOX-01 is the ancestor for the K-11 and K-12 suits that are used by the A.D. Police with limited success against 'rouge' Genom Bu-12c and Bu-55 Boomers. Against the D.D. BattleMovier it was embarrassing how quickly Leon's suit was trashed.

7 Wonderful to see my fave punk girl badass, Priss belting out her signature tune and providing an invitation into the cyberpunk adventure of the Knight Sabers and my first OVA experience, Bubblegum Crisis. Not too bad a way of popping your anime OVA cherry;-)

And nice job Pixy, using the RetroCrush youtube link as it was that wonderful channel that really sparked my newfound passion of exploring, and loving, classic anime.

10 I deal with some of Australia's NBN staff on a regular basis. It's a typical government organisation. It's not that they couldn't organise a root in a brothel - after all, they have contractors for that - it's just that they are all refugees from other companies that didn't appreciate their amazingness, and now at NBN they can just be so amazeballs. So you'll get what you are given and like it, hear?

31 Dark laugh from the local paper. This Progressive is running for State Assembly. This is what his political blurb says: "This is the moment to take transformative ideas and create a progressive agenda that works for all of us, not just those with power. It's time to meet the needs of our community and its backbone, which are working families and small businesses. It is time for a government for us, by us."

Yeah, right. After the wrecking ball put in the local economies by Progressive Governors and the wrecking ball put in the energy sector I'm surprised people actually think progressives are for small businesses and working families.
Some people are very deluded.

36 Hiyoo, Anna! Yes, I did enjoy seeing the many pop culture references in Bubblegum Crisis yet the biggest reference of all, being Blade Runner, somehow escapes my viewpoint.

Perhaps I got lost in my mental database thinking too much of the Knight Sabers being cooler version of the Power Rangers to think about the more direct inspirations points.

And arigato Anna, for this very special video featuring the Actual actresses in Bali...definitely a special treat seeing the lovely Oomori Kinuko in such a cool venue and it does give me an emotional high reflecting on the final OVA ep 8 with Nene finally taking the spotlight. Arguably the best standalone episode, with the two parter ep 5-6 being the best part of the OVA for me.

40 anyone who hates Asian-Americans is a jagoff. I take that back, jagoff is way to light of a term. I am not saying some don't, but it has to be a tiny group of idiots. Most of these attacks on Asians are in blue areas, buy leaning democrat voters. If I am wrong, prove it. I want to see some actual evidence.

people accept this bs for no reason and with no proof. I want to see proof MAGA types are attacking Asian Americans just for existing. And if any do, F them, three times over.

41 Moonlight Rambler/Red Eyes? Wanting your own 33-S Sexaroid? Moonlight Rambler also gives us a nod to another anime with the character design by Kenichi Sonoda of Nam which is also the design for Catty Ray Nebulart from Gall Force.

Scoop Chase is pretty unique in a few ways. It is the last of the original run but wasn't meant to be that. Just Artmic and AIC had a falling out so thus ended one of the best OVA series ever. We get to see Sylia show a bit of a softer side when she interacts with Lisa and explain what the Knight Sabres are tying to do. Yeah Ms. Cheesecake gets to shine for once and prove she's not simply the team mascot. And when it comes to the series music, songs like "Bye Bye My Crisis" from Scoop Chase are not on the two complete vocal collection CDs.

46 Area 88 - "We are the mercenaries of Hell for we have shaken hands with the Devil."

An Arab country is trying to modernize and thus erupts in a civil war. Area 88 refers to where the two opposing aerial forces battle. Shin is a Japanese airline pilot and after a bender with his 'good' friend' wakes up to find out he is now contracted to fight in this civil war until he pays off his debt. The cost of planes, fuel, and munitions are deducted before any money gained from missions is applied to this debt.

69 I was the "Telecom Futurist" back in the late 1990s early 200s. Got into a public row with then-COO of AT&T because I pointed out the Uverse was out of date and inadequate the day they turned it on. He became CEO on the promise he could deliver broadband across the companies low-density markets for only $4 billion. Two years ago two good-looking young people knocked on my door offering me Uverse services at 17 megs down (at the time I was getting more than 100 megs from Comcast).

A company's future, just like a nation's, is heavily dependent on the vision and competence of its leaders.

70 Quote from the Billy Graham quote calendar from two days ago:

As a boy I grew up in the rural American South. My idea of the ocean was so small that the first time I ever saw the Atlantic I couldn't comprehend how any lake could be so big! The vastness of the ocean cannot be understood until it is seen. This is the same with God's love. It passes knowledge. Until you actually experience it, no one can describe its wonders to you...No matter what comes your way...no matter how tempted you are to give in to despair...never forget: God's love for you can never be exhausted, for His love is beyond measure.

72 The River Valley in west Arkansas became home to many Vietnamese, Fort Chaffee being a processing center for a lot of the boat people. Now, for an area that can't make up its mind if its cowboy, southern, or hillbilly, the Vietnamese were accepted and have prospered. It seems they're believers in stuff like going to work. When I was still working, I'd come down here in the winter. One year I took a job in a furniture factory. Got to know a Vietnamese guy. ARVN officer in a previous life, Platoon Leader. Poor fucker was dying from agent orange exposure (liver going south) and he didn't complain that the US was doing zilch for him.

Something like 85% of rural Americans have DSL speeds if they can get terrestrial internet access at all. The ones that go with our crappy satellite providers have slightly faster speeds with 50GB/month caps. Can you even stream two HD movies and stay under 50GB?

This is one of my huge problems with the "infrastructure" BS. They're going to focus on trains that no one wants or will use, all while $80B - which is a rounding error these days - would probably go a long way towards getting those kids in the rural community modern internet service.

Screw it, though, because Elon Musk is going to offer the service with his satellites, and he'll earn every penny coming to him.

I played golf there, it is a really nice course. One time we drove to a remote area to watch the f-14s land at night. It turns out we were on an old airstrip and we should not have been there. The MPs came out with lights and M-16s. It ended ok but we learned a lesson. I am not sure what the lesson was, I guess the lesson was to no drive out on an old airstrip.

Speaking from experience, 1Mbps download is doable but not pleasant. Think 2 hours to download 1GB.

When there was any type of Zoom or streaming requirement I shut down *everything* else except that child's computer. But it was doable.

The urban kids probably have access to fantastic speeds, and IIRC it's free or very cheap for welfare recipients and Section 8 members, same as phones.

86 Putting the solar cells/panels in the roadway is a cool idea. It is a way of using already occupied space so you do not really change the look of an area by putting them in. If it worked right.

On the other hand, look at it this way: most local governments seem to have issues maintaining regular asphalt roads. You want to make the maintenance even more complex? Is that part of the point here? So regular Joe Six Pack cannot even resurface a fucking bypass?

It is impossible to walk anywhere in the downtown portion of the city without being accosted by some grimey bum. There are areas with shopping carts lined up like planes on an aircraft carrier, ready to launch and patrol the city for handouts and soup kitchens. You can't even get in the courthouse without stepping around the hobos parked on the sidewalk.
