Notre Dame Fire Strikes Amidst Wave of Vandalism and Arson at Christian Churches in France

This doesn't mean the Notre Dame fire was arson.

But people have been vandalizing churches, desecrating crucifixes with human excrement, and smashing stained glass.

And setting ancient churches on fire.

This might not explain the fire -- but it does explain the suspicions about the fire, and I won't join the media in embargoing newsworthy facts that illuminate why some are very suspicious about this fire.

While it probably was an accident, it is worth pointing out that it happened during Holy Week–the holiest week of the liturgical year– amid a disturbing wave of anti-Christian attacks on Catholic churches throughout France.

In just one week in March, a dozen churches were desecrated in different regions of France in what appeared to be "obvious" cases of anti-Christian vandalism, according to ABC Internacional, a conservative Spanish daily paper.

"In Nimes (Gard), the Notre-Dame-des-Enfants church was desecrated in a particularly odious way: strangers painted a cross with human excrement, looted the main altar and the tabernacle and stole the wafers , which were later discovered among piles of waste," the Spanish daily reported.

...

On March 17, the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris was set ablaze shortly after the twelve-o'clock Mass, Evangeliques Info reported. The fire was quickly controlled by firefighters, but resulted in damages that will reportedly cost several hundred million euros.

Investigators have concluded that the fire was the result of arson and are now looking for suspects, Evangeliques Info reported.

Lots more at the link. The Saint Denis cathedral, in which are interred the bones of Charles Martel, was also vandalized in March.

For what it's worth, while my mind is open and I don't have any facts, I lean against the intentional arson theory. The fire seems to me to have been such a perfect storm of bad circumstances that it was unlikely to have been intentional.

Consider: The fire was burning (or at least smoldering) for a half an hour before alarms went off, and then it took firefighters an hour to begin putting water on it.

Ninety minutes of burning before any firefighters intervened -- could an arsonist have planned on his slow-starting fire to have ninety minutes to get up to speed before firefighters began dousing it?

I don't think humans -- especially terrorists -- tend to be that patient and that willing to leave things to chance. I think they want to see that their plan has worked right away -- which is why I'd imagine a terrorist arson case would involve a firebomb that goes off, not some concealed slow-fuse fire that takes its time to become an inferno.

And which could be put out by a simple fire extinguisher if it is detected early. Or, having burned the fuel immediately around the small fire, could have self-extinguished without anyone having realized there had been a fire at all.

Sometimes people see a catastrophe like this and think human intention must have been responsible. I usually have the opposite sort of reaction: This calamity was so perfect that humans probably couldn't have carried it off, humans with their crude, clumsy, impatient hands.

Only random, unfeeling chance is so patient. Random chance can afford to wait, because it gets 100,000 bites at the apple every hour.

Note my "analysis," as it is, is pretty uninformed and based on nothing but hunches about probabilities.

What bothers me -- and bothers a lot of people -- is the unseemly speed with which western law enforcement eliminates any Politically Incorrect theory from the realm of possibility.

That's worrisome, because it's sending the message that the French police (and American police) fundamentally do not want to find any deliberate terrorist actor behind any crime, and thus makes the public suspicious that very obvious investigative trails are being deliberately closed off due to political/media relations considerations.

My hunch is that this was, in fact, accidental. Letting sparks rain down to the wood-dust coated roofbeams, something like that.

But I do not like the idea that the authorities charged with protecting us say two things almost in the same breath: that they have ruled out the possibility of any "voluntary" cause behind this and also that they have no idea what the cause was.

That makes no sense. We already know, as a fact, that police are actively searching for suspects in the deliberate arson of Saint Suplice cathedral, the second-biggest church in Paris.

Does it make sense to eliminate arson as a possibility in this latest church fire?

Before a single fireman even entered the structure?!!

No, it doesn't make sense.

And it's not supposed to make sense. It's a politicized claim and it's a step towards a politicized investigation.

I've said this about cases of possible terrorism, and I've said this about the US government's lies about the transmission of ebola: We would worry less if it seemed, from time to time, that the officials we've entrusted with public safety worried more.

16 It could have smoldered for 1/2 hour simply because it was in the roof structure and there is very little air to feed the fire.

This all remains to be seen, but I can envision a fire started among the timbers using accelerant which took a long time to get out of control.

I can not explain the 1 hour for the firefighters to do anything, but that is irrelevant. However the fire was started, it was in an ideal place to do a lot of damage, and it did.

37 Reports are there were no workers onsite.

The only thing they were doing anyway, was putting up scaffolding.

The company had NO heat sources, or even electric sources up there, because of the fire danger.

In fact, every move they made was watched by the Church, and Historic Preservationists to ensure no damage was done to this site.

There are reports of TWO loud bangs. The fire apparently started in two locations.

There is video of a someone up near the roof, just before the fire was reporter. There is a flash in that video.

There is also video of someone looking like they are wearing robes, moving across the base of the roof just after the fire started (you can see the fire in the background).

This is slightly tangential, but history is weird. The Nazis who set the Reichstag fire blamed it on a Dutch Communist.

44
I'm not as cautious as you, Ace.

It was arson. Straight-up.

"1) the workers who were refurbishing the roof of Notre-Dame are among the best specialized craftsmen in the world, concerning the restauration of medieval monuments (their title is “Meilleur Ouvrier de France”.They love their work, and take all the necessary precautions. They have worked in many rooms of the Castle of Versailles, they have restored many churches and cathedrals. For example, they worked during more than 20 years on the marvelous Strasbourg cathedral (I lived in Strasbourg and saw their progress), and there was never a single problem.

2) the workers stopped at 6:00 PM, the fire started at 6:50 PM, near scaffoldings, used to climb there.

3) no electricity was allowed near the roof, because it was made in wood and as a matter of security, every inflamable thing was banned too. So, to have a fire there, someone needed to bring something.

...

1) Restoration work hadn’t started on the roof. The scaffolding were still being put in place. The architect in chief of the “Monuments Historiques” (“Historical Monuments”, the administration that maintains and repairs monuments in France), Philippe Villeneuve, who was responsible for the refurbishing of the spire of Notre-Dame, has stated that : “Work had not started yet, scaffoldings were still being built”.

2) Everything was done to avoid any source of heat near the wood of the roof. No electrical plug, no welding were allowed. So, Philippe Villeneuve says : “The hot spot hypothesis is therefore not the right one”.

3) The head of the company that was building the scaffoldings (Europe Echafaudage) (Europe Scaffolding), Julien Le Bras, was interviewed by a French TV (BFM) : “All I can say for the time being is that at the moment of the fire, absolutely none of the employees of my company was present on site”.

4) He added : “All safety procedures on the Notre-Dame de Paris site have been respected”.

5) One of my friend sent me an email concerning the security on the roof of Notre-Dame. She has a diploma in Art history and studied in the “Ecole du Louvre” (“Louvre School”, were students learn art history and restoration processes) : “I visited the framing of Notre Dame with architects of the “Bâtiments de France” (“Buildings of France”, the highest rank for an architect in France), some years ago. This 13th century timber frame was extremely protected. Each intervention is always accompanied by historians, architects, experts; no work is envisaged without extreme caution; no source of heat, no torch, no electrical apparatus is allowed; a high-performance alarm system is in place; and very strict supervision of all people allowed there. I think we will eventually learn that this was arson.”

6) So, as I said yesterday, with all these security measures, to have a fire on the roof of Notre-Dame, someone had to bring something there, and lit it up"

But were they working on Monday? And if they were, why did it take so long for the fire to be detected. I saw zero reports of having to evacuate workers from high on the ceiling. Doesn't mean it didn't happen since the news media wants to report narrative and not news, but it's all suspicious.

Blackout curtains everywhere, inside the church no lights on, just candles. She remembered it as the most beautiful service she ever attended. Afterwards everyone hurried home because if you were caught on the street after curfew you'd get shot.

126 the "lone wolf" could have started the small fire before leaving work, or could have left a device. Not really a big deal, given all the old tinder around. That is why renovation is so careful.

And "the left" (France) would cover it up. But that is without evidence, for now, unless those on the scene are being silenced, and they come forward.

The other possibility, that real renovation was made easier by a fire ... has some degree of plausibility. The "don't put new wine in old wineskins" thang. And it would make a good fundraiser, to see it burn ... sacrebleu! It worked ... half a billion and counting.

Accident seems less likely to me ... timing, and the trend, and the Muslim workers ... in any case ... rebuild it better and more glorious ... and still Christian .. would be nice.

However breathlessly they may have reported it, the attempt to kill so many for Allah sounded so flipping innocuous and stupid.

2. Numerous desecrations and vandalisms of churches across Europe.

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't discount a Islamic terrorist attack on a Western Christian landmark.

I'm not about to discount muzzie arson. It probably was, but we'll never find out because the Tootsie Pop Media doesn't want us to know what it was. All we'll hear are gauzy half-assed conjectures followed by some gigantic blue-ribbon panel of "experts" that will waste a few years and and several million taxpayer dollars only to come to another half-assed conjecture that will probably be a cover-up anyway.
In fact, the more I think about it, I'm certain it was arson done by a muzzie. Progda is way too eager to shut people down if they even act like they want to suggest it was muzzie arson, like Ace said.

194 Good post, ace. That closely mirrors my own thoughts on the matter. I'm still inclined to believe it was an accident related to the renovation work, but of course I would certainly not rule out terrorism.

It seems like it would be very difficult for a terrorist to get into the roof. Setting off a bomb during Mass would be much more straightforward.

But I'm curious as to whether any of the workers were named Mohammad.

Last night I found this article following links from Ann Barnhardt's site. It appears that "militant secularism" is a real thing in France, and is certainly responsible for at least some of the church vandalism. The graffiti shown in the photo was not written by a Muslim, but more likely by an SJW Antifa Commie type.

Behind the scenes, he should have told the Saudis no one is going anywhere until every bin Laden family member was dead. Every organization the Saudi's funded should have been raided and closed. Every mosque they funded closed and torn down. Muslim immigration stopped. Then an announcement that any other attack like this would result in mushroom clouds in the Middle East.

That brings up a whole different aspect. I had car trouble in rural Quebec once; a Montreal cop who was out there to work on his sailboat helped me a lot, and we got to talking about Americans and their lousy French.

I mentioned that a lot of us can stammer around a little, but we didn't want to offend. He laughed and said, that's just those Parisians. The other French don't even like them, they're so snobby. Canadians won't visit there, because the Parisians openly mock Quebecois. They go to Normandy, where people are likely to have a similar dialect and if they don't, they're friendly and appreciate you visiting, so they'll help you out a little.

Since then I've heard this from several sources: all the crap you hear about France is really about Paris. The rest of France doesn't even like Paris.

No need to beat yourself up, my brother. I'm trying to add some balance here. It could be X, it could be Y. With the evidence to hand - fragmentary at best - it's not clear.

Do Muslims do shit like this? Of course. It could be them.

Do workers do stupid shit contra all rules that has catastrophic consequences? Of course. It could be that too. (Three Mile Island, Chernobyl.)

How many times do construction workers defeat blade guards on power saws, for example?

At this point, we don't know. All the possibilities need to be investigated without prejudice.

Posted by: DaveA at April 17, 2019 09:18 PM (FhXTo)

It is a VERY common thing. A church I was a member of, we were fixing the ceiling from some mildew and water damage from a roof leak. The contractors were just about done, and were painting the ceiling. One of them pushed some rags up into the can lighting so the bulbs wouldn't be spray painted, and put a tag on the light switch so no one would turn them on.

The tag fell off, someone who didn't know anything about it flipped on the lights and left, the painted rag caught on fire from the heat and fell out, burning, fell right on top of a brand new organ console and burned it up - $300,000 in damage due to one oily rag and somebody accidentally turning the lights on.

Accidents happen in weird, almost trivial ways. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that this fire started in some weird way like that.

zero ... now old church renovations, not sure how many burn. But Notre Dame ... more important than any .. we just accept "renovation, accidents happen"? no ... that is unlikely.

The two bangs thing ... very simple for a Muslim worker to leave a device, a little propellant would never be found in such a huge fire. But the two bang report was silenced quickly, from what I recall ... or was it just a tweet that was deleted? in any case ... motive and opportunity say arson a strong possibility ... plus the trend of arson or other attacks on Christian churches. Plus "fire" is a preferred method of the jihadists ... they even burn their own migrant sanctuaries cuz wifi is not fast enough.

But sure, Shemp and Neil must censor the elephant ... and squeak like the little mice they are. (even if there is not full evidence the elephant flattened this particular native)

For one thing, Ace, you may not be able to really comprehend the
enormous space between the cathedral ceiling and the roof. And just
like any "attic" type fire, it's going to burn awhile before it breaks
through the roof or the ceiling. So an incendiary device is quite
possible, and in that type of dry fuel environment, it would not have to
be big.

I read they had some kind of lead barrier in there somewhere that prevented water getting in too.

303 Back during WW II the French luxury liner SS Normandie was seized by the War Dept once France laid down for the Nazis. Workers in NY Harbor where it was docked were converting it into a troop transport called the USS Lafayette when a welding torch lit up some insulation material. The fire that started spread quickly through the ship, it was put out when the volumes of water being pumped into the port side caused the ship to roll over at the pier.

There were plans to fix the ship but it was considered too expensive and the damage to the hull too extensive to make it worth the money and labor. After the superstructure was removed, the hull was towed to Port Newark and scrapped.

Although theories of sabotage proliferated, the congressional investigation concluded that the restoration effort was a clusterfuck of incompetence, lack of coordination, and of course corruption.

I used to live half a block from a Catholic church as a kid and the bells would drive me nuts. But nothing is worse than the shrieks of Islam from the minarets. Awful.

Another thing about that church was that they would dump incomplete, mistaken statuary in the woods. So it was the spookiest ever place to hike, because it was full of headless saints and angels with broken wings, etc.

If the ND fire was muslim arson it was a mighty stupid move.

---------------------------

Something like this - ASSUMING IT'S ARSON - is a timing thing. You don't want to spring it too early (though in a country the size of France, someone's bound to). If you do, you'll get a backlash. You want to spring it when your own side has just reached the critical mass of support when you know that you can do whatever you want, and the other side will just sit quietly and take it.

It is, in effect, saying, "You're cowed and won't fight back, and we both know it."

It's a thug thing. It's the sort of technique that a thuggish culture uses.

However...

Western Civilization is willing to take a few slights now and again - turn the other cheek - in order to live and let live. And this can lead to some catastrophic mistakes when some thug misjudges the other side as being more supine than they actually are.

"You DO know that tritium is used to detonate (IIRC) hydrogen bombs, right?"

The guy literally turned white, as the blood drained form his face.

It might be described as "an accelerant" because the detonator is an ordinary nuke. But the primary fuel in a "thermo-nuclear bomb" is DT.

For a deliverable H-Bomb. Ivy Mike, our first fusion explosion, was straight deuterium.

Of course it was also the size of power plant so not exactly deliverable.

In the weapons design, they used both lithium deuteride (a stable solid) and heavy water made with Tritium in "cups". Also sometimes had bottles of Tritium gas.

Tritium has a half life of 12.3 years, so the bombs periodically had to be removed, serviced and tritium (in one or another form) had to be replaced.

I'm old enough to remember when the Savannah River plant, our only source of tritium, was down for years. They had to keep scavenging tritium from other bombs to keep an ever decreasing number of warheads active.

Good thing we had a lot of bombs back then.

436 Notre-Dame is not electrified above the string course at the top of its triforium. There is no electrical service in its roof, above the high vault. There is no electrical service anywhere above the stone line. There are no drapes or other flammables to carry fire above the stone line. The towers have electrical service to their floor level, below the bells, but this is not where the fire stated.

Internal lighting is broadcast upwards from the triforium to the vault surface, and supplemented by chandeliers hung from the triforium floor or cantilevered off pillars at the triforium floor level. Even the spire was not topped with the traditional red warning light for aircraft.

It is difficult to conceive of an accidental ignition source which could have ignited inside the roof. The outside of the roof is sheathed in lead, which would have protected the wooden roof interior structure from shorts in any electrical cables used by construction crews on the exterior scaffolding. And any sparks from metal cutting. There were no construction personnel present when the fire was kindled, in any event.

It is rash to ignore arson as a possible source of ignition.

Yeah, but most acts of vandalism consist of spray-painting graffiti, smearing feces on crucifixes, contaminating the holy water, or perhaps throwing a Molotov cocktail through the front door.

Starting a fire inside the roof is many orders of magnitude of difficulty beyond any of that. It would be much easier for a terrorist to set off a bomb during Mass or stage a mass shooting.

It still could be an accident despite all those other incidents of vandalism.

438 387 379 "You DO know that tritium is used to detonate (IIRC) hydrogen bombs, right?"
No. Tritium is the explosive.

Tritium was the enhancer. Check out the B61 Dial-a-Yield nuke. You could get from .33KT to about 40+KT by dialing the amount of Tritium released into the nuclear sphere just prior to detonation. The bomb had all kinds of delivery methods - my favorite being the reinforced spike in the nose to stick in a runway like a dart. The PETN charge that deployed a parachute on it was the closest I ever came to being hurt in an accident as a GM working on bombs.

Posted by: trainer at April 17, 2019 11:56 PM (7EbAY)

439 The restoration crews are not a bunch of yokels picked up at the Home Depot. They are professional people who specialize in the restoration of these treasured wooden structures. They do not use any type of open flame equipment or anything that could possibly cause a spark. They had not even finished constructing the scaffolding. No sensible person can rule out arson, especially when several attempts to torch the Cathedral in recent years have been foiled.
