Overnight Open Thread (5 May 2017)

Well it took 8 years and finally having a Republican in the White House, but here comes the focus on the U-6 unemployment rate. So predictable CNBC. Here's the real unemployment rate.

A Sign Of The Times We Live In

AC-130W Stinger II

Hmmm, nice. The USAF finally gives its AC-130W the big gun it desperately needs.

Anti-Vaxxers

Anti-vaccine activists spark a state's worst measles outbreak in decades. Thanks Jenny McCarthy!

F-22

Good God this plane is a bucket of awesome.

Rocket Tax

Go ahead California. Florida and other states will gladly take more business. California seeks to add more taxes to rocket launches.

Reality Hits

Well if they'd take the time to listen to folks grounded in reality, they'd have avoided this. When liberalism collides with reality. Will Connecticut make a course change or address the issue intelligently or just keep bumbling down the path that obviously isn't working?

Wolfenstein 3D

Oh man, I remember when this game came out. Wolfenstein 3D turns 25 years old today. You can still play the game in your browser here. No install necessary.

One

Situational Awareness

I practice this all the time you never know when it will come in handy, especially during rush hour. How to develop your situational awareness.
h/t

Education

Boy, they really do hand out degrees for doing nothing today. Travyon Martin will receive posthumous degree in Florida. In aeronautical science. Seriously? On the other hand, recent airline behavior with customers indicates Trayvon just might have had a career open to him.

Eh--looks like they are working their way through the F-35 problems (I hope.).

They are different mission sets. The F-22 is the F-15 air superiority successor. The F-35 is the F-16 multi-role successor.

I'd still like to have enough F-22s to make the Chinese think 87 times about anything they might want to do.

I've got a really good snake story. Long story, but years ago, we rigged a lot for a trailer for my grandmother, who was getting where she couldn't take care of herself, and that got her moved in right next to us.

She had to go a nursing home soon after anyway. This young just married couple wanted to put a trailer of their own in that lot and stay there until they could build a house. My father agreed.

They built a house a few years later, but starting sub-letting out the trailer. My father let the do that, even though he didn't really want to.

One summer day, the woman was moving in new tenants, and was over there cleaning up the trailer.

We were out in the shop doing something. We heard a blood curdling scream. We ran over that, and there the woman, Kim, was outside.

Turned out she had to go to the bathroom, but a black snake had gotten in and curled up under the seat. When she was doing her business, she saw the snake's head pop up between her legs.

She freaked out. I would have too.

I read today that Kino Lorber, a blu-ray/DVD label, is re-releasing a 50th anniversary edition of the classic 1966 western The Good, The Bad And The Ugly this summer.

But what's weird is, this edition contains the original Italian title. So it's labeled The Good, The Ugly And The Bad.

It was a small baby copperhead. We figured he had come up looking for water, since it was so dry.

IIRC, it was large, and decked out with guns, and acting as an amphibious assault vehicle.

Seems to be an idea not wholly without merit. The wheels could be filled with foam, these days, rendering it nearly unsinkable.

The thing is, three of the four possible successors to Corbyn are even worse.

Diane Abbott is anti-White and openly praised Mao Zedong.

Sadiq Khan is the Muslim Mayor of London

John McDonnell is an openly avowed Marxist who just attended a pro-Stalinist election rally.

Any of these at the helm and Labour will quickly drop to 4th, or worse, place in the next subsequent election.

The only other contender is Chuka Umunna, the UK equivalent of Barack Obama (though less of a cock-holster)... though considering the people who elected Corbyn, despite knowing who and what he was, would be voting on a replacement...

I found a small garter snake in the basement of the farmhouse. Understandable as the cellar door had a small tube at the bottom for drainage.

The freaky snake thing was when a rather large snake surprised me in the barn. Black rectangles on a brown body, sounds like it was rattling but wasn't a rattler. Broke the end off a hoe killing it.

Then the next day another was in the drive, drove over it and that didn't kill it. Had to get out and wack that one to death too.

Too bad, they were killing vermin, but I didn't need them surprising me around the homestead.

It got hot here today. Eighty degrees F, with a hot steady wind out of the south, and mostly overcast. Very unusual. I think we may get a humdinger of a storm soon.

I drove up to Red Deer today, and went to the antique car swap meet for a couple of hours. Will return tomorrow. Mostly to network with old friends. Upon leaving the venue, went to WalMart to snag a few necessities. I'm putting my shopping cart back in the corral, and got accosted by a 60-something woman toting a cane. "Please, can you help me? My husband had a heart attack, and he's in hospital in Edmonton. I need $20 for gas, and I don't have any money." I asked, "Don't you have any friends or family to help you?" She said she was from Olds, thirty miles to the south, and that her family was all in Manitoba. To make a long story short, I didn't give her the $20, because her story just didn't pass the smell test. She's in a WalMart parking lot, and the nearest gas station is a half-mile away. And even if her story were true, twenty bucks would not have helped. It might barely have got her enough fuel to reach Edmonton, but leave none to drive around the city. And all the hospitals have pay parking for visitors, and she'd have to drop ten dollars for that. And where is she going to stay, and what will she eat?

Had she made the same request while at a gas station with her car with an empty tank, I might have tried to help her out, because at least in that case, there's corroborating evidence that she's on the road, in a car with no fuel. I figure she was just panhandling.

Yes. Look up the IMDB on the series. Peter Graves wasn't on the first season, but Landau and Bain were. The actor who played the boss role had some difficult demands or something so they got rid of him and hired Graves.

Landau and Bain left after two or three, and Spock took over the role for a season or so. Lesley Ann Warren, Lynda Day George took over the female role for a few seasons each. Lee Merriweather played the part for a few episodes as well, but she was never a regular.

There were only two team members who there for the whole series, and that was Greg Morris and Peter Lupus.

330 Suaado Salah listened. And this spring, her 3-year-old boy and 18-month-old girl contracted measles in Minnesota's largest outbreak of the highly infectious and potentially deadly disease in nearly three decades. Her daughter, who had a rash, high fever and cough, was hospitalized for four nights and needed intravenous fluids and oxygen.

++++

No doubt she could have protected her children by getting them vaccinated. But, the feds could play their part as well by ceasing importation of all kinds of disease carriers from the third world.

Bears have a good nose for sugar, apparently. We've had three hummingbird feeders destroyed by bears. We quit putting them up. They're also attracted to seed bird feeders, so those are out too.

In a month or so, the cherries will be ripe, and I'll start finding bear scat around.

340 Yep. Cali. Same ones.
On the coast we get one type - the ruby throated. That's it.
They leave for the winter, then come back next spring. Not unlike Purple Martins.

As to copperheads,
I was hiking a trail around Kerr Dam with the ex and her 2 kids a few years back.
They (6 &8/9) ran ahead of us on the trail when we got close to the parking area. 30 seconds later, I was crossing by where they just ran, and yes - a baby copperhead.
Scared the shot out of me! Baby/juvenile snakes don't know how to control the venom they inject - they kill you quicker than a full grown adult.
The kids never saw the thing, but it took me 10 minutes to work my way around it.

The first thing I asked my boy when we met them at the van was "how'd he do?"

You are more than welcome. And look at you! Your wanted her to have a good and happy childhood and she did! You share the same bedtime story! You have had hope for all these years and now you will have joy as well.Oh BTW, when I first met my daughter's adoptive parents her mother kept kind of staring at me. Now that made me nervous! But what it really was that she was amazed at how many of the same mannerisms, gestures and expressions our daughter and I shared. It's "interesting" -- in a nice way. We laughed about it. And her birth father tells me we sound the same on the phone -- he has to listen for after the first "Hi". He tells me the worst is when one of us calls and says "Hi, it's me. Call me". Thank God for caller ID. Be yourself and enjoy. (There are lots of things that are different too.)

It just seems like they're trying too hard to make the harp seem exciting. "Check out the urban decay backdrop." "Oooh, she's looking intently into her sister's eyes." "Look! she's operating the pedal things with such passion."

Meh. It's still harp music. I don't know if it's possible to make it exciting for long passages. Harp music is great for adding dramatic accents to larger works, but as a solo instrument it just seems boring to me, regardless of who's playing it.

The reply was "yeah, that happens sometimes."

----

Heh! I found one slitherin' down the hallway toward the back bedroom. Pretty sure it was a harmless garter snake. But when I tried to shoe it into a box, it got a little fiesty and tried to bite. Garter snakes usually just puke on you. Well, it isn't puke, exactly. Anyway, took the little guy outside and we had a heart to heart talk.

"Outside is your side," I said.
"Inside is my side. Outside, your side. Inside, my side."

Didn't see any snakes inside for several years until I found one curled up next to the sliding glass door waiting for someone to open it, so it could go outside. So I opened the door and stood back, and the little guy slithered out the door after tasting the outside air.

The house is infested with mice at the change of season when it turns cold, and again in the spring. I need all the mouse catchers I can get.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I'd say it does. Especially in the context of discussion of a serious relationship. Not even considering the morality of things, just the chance of STD's and/or children in someone's history is an important thing to know.

Although, as a dude, it is also possible that his number is zero and he's a bit embarrassed about that. Guys do tend to put undue importance on their bedpost notch count.

464 Well, I just learned today, to my shock, that I am a "scientist"!

Friend of mine has a copper medallion bought as a souvenir (not "worth" anything, but with sentimental value) which had been stored in a box that got wet and found years later to have gotten totally corroded.

He wanted to clean off the corrosion without damaging the medallion. He was going to start scraping at it with an Xacto knife and a Brillo pad, but I suggested he try a trick I had developed years ago for cleaning the bottoms of copper-bottomed Revere Ware pots. Here's the technique:

In a larger stainless steel pot, pour in some vinegar, and get it gently boiling on the stove. Then put in a handful of shredded aluminum foil, and in that mixture submerge the bottom of the smaller Revere Ware pot. Like some kind of crazy magic, the most corroded/tarnished/burnt copper-bottomed pot will become sparkling clean this way. I suggested that the same would likely be true of the medallion, without the need for any abrasive scratching.

Well, he did it, and it worked! He was stunned -- all the corrosion completely gone.

Anyway, that happened a few weeks ago, and just today I recounted this anecdote to some coworkers, but added the proviso to NOT try it on modern pennies that had become corroded, because for some odd reason it will destroy them further. Old pennies -- works fine. But not with damaged new pennies. Probably, I reasoned, because new pennies aren't really copper, but instead have just a thin veneer of copper over a fill-metal.

When asked what purpose the aluminum foil served, I replied that I wasn't sure, but had stumbled on the technique years and years ago when a vinegary recipe I was making (in a Revere Ware pot) boiled over and in a panic I had taken it off the stove and put it almost at random on a piece of aluminum foil on the counter (so as to not damage the counter). Later, I noticed that the part of the copper-bottom of the pot touching the foil had somehow become sparkling clean on its own!

I then experimented with doing it on purpose as a cleaning method, and found it worked (mostly with copper), although it usually required a second step of rubbing with baking soda to remove a slightly weird patina left over by the vinegar-aluminum process.

It was at this point that one of my co-workeres informed me that I had accidentally "re-discovered the galvanic series" and that if this was the 18th century, I'd be hailed as the founder of electrochemistry.

To be frank, I had never even heard of "the galvanic series" before he said this, and I know jack-doodle about chemistry (never took a class in it, ever).

So, just now, I looked it up, and I'm still a bit confused, but as far as I can tell all metals are arranged in an ascending series of "nobility" which is related to their electrical potential -- and that if two metals of different nobility are connected in a way that electricity can pass between them, the less noble metal will drain off corrosion from the more-noble metal as part of an electrical current being generated. (And this is actually the principle behind batteries -- who knew???)

And the whole point is that aluminum is near the very BOTTOM of the galvanic series, while copper is near the middle, so that if the copper is corroded and placed in a conductive solution with pure aluminum, the aluminum will suck away the carbon and oxygen part of the corrosion layer, leaving pure copper behind -- while the aluminum itself will become corroded (but who cares, you're just throwing it away afterward).

But, interestingly, one of the very few metals LESS noble than aluminum is zinc -- so the corrosion would go the other way. Which is why the method doesn't work on new pennies, because they're filled with zinc! And lastly, stainless steel is higher in the galvanic series than copper, which is why the technique doe not damage the enclosing pot. So, unwittingly, I just experimentally proved that the galvanic series goes zinc --> aluminum --> copper --> stainless steel. With additional experiments, I could fill in the rest of the metal elements on the scale, depending of which corroded the other.

So that explains why my technique works. It also turns out to have been one of the most important scientific discoveries ever made, centuries ago.

Without having the slightest idea what I was doing, nor why it worked, I made the same discovery again! And I didn't even know until just now, even though I "discovered" it years and years ago!

Yeah, I found that out. If you put one that is scratched or damaged (which happens to seemingly all them pretty quickly because they're so crappily made) in the solution, it will literally eat away the center of the penny! Now that I know what the galvanic series is, I finally understand why.

Well, you have become an alchemist, at least. You might want to do a Web search on the topic: "electrolytic derusting". If you impress voltage from an external source onto the metals in your electrolyte bath, you can make the reaction go either way.

Zinc is useful for that reason. Go to a boatyard, which should be easy to find in SF. Nearly all boats will have "sacrificial anodes" made of pure zinc, bolted to any underwater piece of metal, like the propeller shaft and rudder, or perhaps the keel on a sailboat. They usually get replaced yearly, and get eaten away, but by getting eaten, protect valuable parts made of nobler metals.

Science is everywhere! Thanks for the fascinating tidbit.

Too bad the chemistry teacher at my high school was a notorious child molester. If you signed up for his class, you did so with the full knowledge that he was going to hit on you and try to get in your pants. Some kids were actually OK with that -- he slept with countless girls every semester.

I stayed as far away from that creep as possible, and so took physics instead. But as a result, to this day I don't know the first thing about chemistry.
