Quote of the Day

On the day of US President Donald Trump's inauguration, two poorly understood forces of the internet collided in a sort of bizarre death lock - a struggle that has manifested in the real world as Nazi-costumed dances in New York, a meticulously planned theft in rural Tennessee and last month, a raid on a British rooftop.

These forces are called 4chan and Shia LaBeouf.

Quote of the Day

The future, as best I understand it, is basically Philip K. Dick by way of Pornhub.

-- Sonny Bunch commenting on dildo cameras being hijacked by online hackers

Quote of the Day

It probably won't shock anyone here to know that steps were made in the last half decade that will, in the end, destroy our nuclear deterrent by simple neglect.

Not unlike deciding to put a cat on a vegan diet - it doesn't kill it right away and it looks like you are feeding it - but it is a death sentence.

-- CDR Salamander

Quote of the Day

  • Do not take a bold stand, especially in public. It does not matter if your argument is made honestly and in good faith, or if you are an expert on the matter of policy under discussion.
  • Keep a keen sense of which way the political wind is blowing. Don't fight it - drift with it.
  • No matter the number of your accomplishments or their objective prestige, you will be humiliated for once having promoted a Wrong Opinion.
  • The more effectively and memorably you promoted the Wrong Opinion, the greater your punishment will be.
-- Aaron MacLean on what the whole Jim Webb-Annapolis debacle has taught current midshipmen

Quote of the Day

Finally, our Home Secretary and local dimbulb MP, Amber Rudd, made some off-the-cuff remark on the day after the attack to the effect that Londoners going about their business proved that the terrorists will never win. Standard post-attack fare, right? Only, I have just now worked out what our leaders mean when they say that. They mean, "we don't have to do anything, we don't have to change anything, we don't have to react in any way to what just happened; we'll go on just exactly as before and that will show those old terrorists we're not scared."

But we are scared, fam. If you have a brain in your head, you're scared. And they goddamn good and well better do something about it.

-- Sweasel on the recent sudden jihad syndrome knife attack in Westminster

Quote of the Day

I'm not sure if the guns are supposed to mimic something graphically here, but I like that there are a lot of them. How long has "guns and '70s clothes" been sure-fire movie formula, anyway? At least since Pulp Fiction. Probably since the '70s. Except in the '70s they were just called "movies."

...I wasn't into Sons of Anarchy so all I really know abut him [Charlie Hunnam] is that he has a confusing accent. It feels like every few years Hollywood tries to turn a good-looking guy into a charismatic guy. Meanwhile, if the example of Chris Pratt teaches us anything, it's that it's easier to turn a charismatic guy into a good-looking guy than vice versa. Then again, it worked with Channing Tatum so who knows?

-- Vince Mancini in This Week in Movie Posters

Quote of the Day - Welcome to 2017 Edition

If you recently Googled the phrase "Taylor Swift virtual reality sex" (or some variation thereof), you may have come across reporting on a "scandal" that embodies just about everything that is wrong with our culture.

Quote of the Day

Well. "Multicultural" means all the cultures but one.

-- Glenn Reynolds on the Mother Expelled From 'Multicultural Playgroup' Because She's White story

Quote of the Day

Canada's contribution was out of all proportion to the scanty population of the country at the time, and deserves to be memorialized. To put things in perspective, on D-Day the US covered two beaches, the UK two, and Canada one. By war's end, there were whole divisions of Canadians in Northern Europe (and another in Italy), never mind the Canadians at sea or in the RCAF or RAF (there were even some Canadians who fought in the US forces. There always are). At the outbreak of the war in 1939, though, the Canadian population was just under 11.3 million, less than 10% of the American, and less than 25% of the British. Canada's GDP imbalance with its allies was even stronger.

-- WeaponsMan on the disproportionate contribution of Canada to the WWII war effort

Girly Men With Girly Men Hands

A new study in press at the Journal of Hand Therapy (yes, a real thing) finds that millennial men may have significantly weaker hands and arms than men the same age did 30 years ago.

Researchers measured the grip strength (how strongly you can squeeze something) and pinch strength (how strongly you can pinch something between two fingers) of 237 healthy full-time students aged 20 to 34 at universities in North Carolina. And especially among males, the reduction in strength compared to 30 years ago was striking.

...But today, older millennial men and women are roughly equal when it comes to grip strength.

Zombies: The Early Years

"A new scientific study of medieval human bones, excavated from a deserted English village, suggests the corpses they came from were burnt and mutilated. Researchers from the University of Southampton and Historic England believe this was carried out by villagers who believed that it would stop the corpses rising from their graves and menacing the living."

I can foresee a whole series of books inspired by this little tidbit.

Arnold Kling on Peoples' Interests Becoming Narrower, Deeper, and Older

Fifty years ago, I believe that there were more social bridge players than tournament players. Today, it is closer to the reverse.

When I tried to get back into tournament bridge a few years ago, I found that the "barrier to entry" had gotten much higher. Players expect you to know a plethora of new tactics, which in bridge are known as "conventions."

The other point to notice was that the median age of players at the tournament seemed to be about 70. Not many young people are willing to get past the barrier to entry.

...As another example, consider people with an interest in baseball. Fifty years ago, many casual fans knew the batting averages and home run totals of well-known players. Today, there are fewer fans with that knowledge. Instead, there is a relatively small group of fans whose knowledge includes arcane statistics that did not exist when I was growing up.

Also, I think that interest in baseball skews older, in spite of marketing efforts aimed at the young. My sense is that in the ballpark it is mostly people over age 50 who are paying close attention to the action on the field. The younger people are on their cell phones and/or watching the JumboTron.

I believe that religion is becoming narrower, deeper, and older. A smaller fraction of the population is affiliated with a place of worship, but there may be an uptick among those deeply committed, such as Orthodox Jews. Otherwise, many congregations are thinning out as their populations age and die off.

I understand your pain. I was once at a sauna at a health club. The woman sitting across from me had quite a bit of chest hair in her cleavage. I mean dark, chest hair like a man. It was the only thing masculine about her. No large shoulders or adam's apple. It was really hard not to stare.

If she had some hormone or medication issue, you would have thought that she would have used Nair or something.

Researchers from the University of Southampton and Historic England believe this was carried out by villagers who believed that it would stop the corpses rising from their graves and menacing the living.

If you are seriously wondering (and interested), "to root" is l33t hacker talk for "hack into and take full control of". "Root" comes from the Unix world, where root is the name of the superuser, UserID 0, which has complete control over the system.

Linux, which is an open source/free version of said Unix is in everything now, including smart dildos, now apparently.

And thus the l33t hackers hack into the dildo, gain root access, and thus own the dildo.

Apparently there is a demand for such smart dildos and got knows what else, butt plugs I guess.

On an episode earlier today, a girl got engaged at 15. OMG. Plus... the people on this show make the Kardashians look like Stoics.

Is the purpose of this to make us dislike gypsies? Becuase it's kind of doing that to me. All of them seem to be emotional basket cases, no matter what the age.

Or are we trying to show how it's great to get married before 18? To be honest, most girls are 1-19, so paving the way for pedophilia/Islam.

Q: What do these songs have in common, besides being sung by Frank Sinatra?

A. They're the first five songs on Bob Dylan's new album "Triplicate". The arrangements are nearly identical, except they're tailored to a small band rather than a big one. Some of them even have horns.

Bob has really been on a Sinatra kick lately. This is his third album in a row consisting entirely of old songs that were once sung by Frank Sinatra. And this one is a three disc set! He's really getting comfortable with it.

This is on Disc 2, and it is killer:

216 Peoples' Interests Becoming Narrower, Deeper, and Older
***
There are a couple of trends that I think are causing this.

One is the amazing increase in potential sources of entertainment. Not only do we have completely new technologies to enjoy (drone flying, occulus rift, etc) but the modern interconnected world has brought entertainments from all over the world to the United States.

Another is the left's growing hatred for history. History is a reminder that you cannot change mankind, economics, or the laws of nature - which drives the left to sputtering rage. And while older games and hobbies are but mere shadows of those arguments, it still drives the left to seek the new to the exclusive of the traditional.

219 On the Tournament Bridge thing: Did that used to be called "Contract Bridge"?

Because once I did some Greek cooking in the kitchen of one of the owners of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The maid cleaned up after us. A different experience for me.

Anyway, her hubby was really into Contract Bridge. Didn't gamble at the casino.

Posted by: KTbarthedoor at April 14, 2017 10:35 PM (qahv/)

I used to live in a house full of tournament bridge players. "Contract bridge" is the proper name of the game, and social games are merely contract bridge. The cards are actually dealt out from a deck for each rubber, a game being comprised of X number of rubbers (I forget the number).

Tournament bridge has teams who play and defend pre-dealt hands at the various tables, and the teams move from table to table, and play different hands against different opponents. Also known as "duplicate bridge".

Duplicate bridge players include some very bright people, and some of them are charming, and some are very annoying...

Omar Sharif, the actor is a bridge player. I never met him, but some of my then-housemates had played in tournaments with him, and spoke well of him.

Not worried at all. Trump said Fat Kim would not do nukes. He's a man of his word. Right now, there a B-52s in Guam, and a carrier group is steaming to their coast. Xi has stopped buying coal from them in order to get their attention.

Not really.

There was a DJ that worked at the station that I was at and he up and quit one night. Next day I get a call from the local newspaper asking why I fired him. I didn't, he quit. Of course the newspaper made the article sympathetic to him, but I knew that they would. As the years went by, every time they did a story on him, the reason why we supposedly fired him changed. All the newspaper writer or editor had to do was look in their archives to see that the guy was full of shit, but they never have.

It's why I really never believe anything I see in the newspaper except for sports scores, and usually I will check another source for those to make sure.

I'm convinced that if I fought in World War II, I'd have been shot dead by an American soldier. I'd have been wandering the forests of Europe alone after getting separated from my unit, and a fellow American would come across me and understandably want to know if I were a German spy. "What's Ty Cobb's batting average?" he'd have asked, like they do in the movies.

"I don't know. Hang on, I can look ... "

I'd figure that I could punch Ty Cobb's name into Wikipedia and I'd have it, but while I reaching into one of my pockets to retrieve my smart phone, BANG! That'd be the end of G.I. FireHorse.

I watched a bit of the North Korean military parade today, including the alleged mobile ICBM's, which look like Russian Topols.

I did fantasize about having a Tomahawk hit the reviewing stand mid-parade and taking out Little Fat Boy.

Two observations:

Little Fat Boy is germaphobic - when he talked to one of the generals and dignitaries standing next to him, they covered their mouths when speaking to him.

Might be something to exploit.

After the military parade, they had civilians march by waving pompoms, along with floats. They had somewhat fuzzy closeups of the civilians, most of whom looked utterly terrified - I wonder if the shots were deliberately fuzzed to make that less obvious.

415 I'm determining if I'm going to be drunk. Not as tired as I was...buuuut the blog is pretty much slowing down.....

Well for sure gonna finish this drink and make one more and then decide

Posted by: thathalfrican - straight killin' it at April 15, 2017 03:28 AM (nDcc3)

416 It does seem to be fading. Cheers!

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at April 15, 2017 03:30 AM (tHwdc)

417 Cheers indeed!

It's pretty much us Miley. Everyone is AWOL.

Last night was fun, I enjoyed the banter and the consensus seemed to be I was in the right to throw identity politics back in the face of my coworker.

Posted by: thathalfrican - straight killin' it at April 15, 2017 03:32 AM (nDcc3)

418 Also, Miley what are you drinking?

Posted by: thathalfrican - straight killin' it at April 15, 2017 03:34 AM (nDcc3)

419

Okay, okay. I'll admit I'm drunk, but I can't go home until I find my shoe...

422 Rum and cola. Generic rum, generic cola. All my disposable income goes to ammo. Not that there's much, but you gotta feed the gun.

Oh yeah, and that cat.

Catfood and ammo.

That could be a blog....

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at April 15, 2017 03:36 AM (tHwdc)

423 Ha, we're pretty much on the same wave length. I've got Captain and Coke, probably 60/40 booze to Coke ratio.

Ammo eh? Wise investment

John: You ready Lindddssshhhey? We pull this off and we end this Korean thing right here.

Lindsey: Oh, for fun! *giggles while clapping hands excitedly*

John: After Kim shheees this performanchh, all will be forgotten. Ready?

Lindsey: Yeppers!

427 I haven't had the Captain in years. And I'm boycotting Coke.

But, once I start working (hopefully in the next 3-4 weeks), gonna buy me some decent bourbon. And a bottle of Bulleit, for a friend who has a birthday coming up.

Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at April 15, 2017 03:45 AM (tHwdc)

428 That's very kind but, I'm not nearly courageous enough to put myself out there like that on a regular basis.

Most of my friends don't know my political leanings. Path of least resistance and all that, which I fully admit is baby butt soft on my part.

Posted by: thathalfrican - straight killin' it at April 15, 2017 03:46 AM (nDcc3)

429 Captain is old reliable. I'm sure there is better rum out there but meh. Why are you boycotting Coke?

Goodluck on the job hunt I hope it all works out for you

432 Well, since my politics are well-known, most of my friends are here at the blog, LOL! That's how it is when you grow up in Mass, and live a good portion of your life in Cali.

My left shoulder's killing me. Don't know why. It's been slightly painful for a few days, but today's a lot worse. Guess I'll just have to wait it out.

First night off work.

Listening to C2C, watching (muted) Good Eats, and lurking AoS. Good night.

The waning, but still bright moon, just caps the evening...

434 Hey the blog is a decent place for friends!

Mass AND Cali? Damn.

Funny my left shoulder is fucked, I got it yanked on playing ball. Still ain't right, it's kept me from lifting which is a damn shame

LOL, just because we had the same response to something here. Nevermind, I also wasn't sure if we had emailed before.

We seem to agree on a lot of things, that's all.

Boycotting Coke because they did some SJW thing which I've forgotten. Wegman's cola is 69 cents for 2 liters, so I'll probably never go back.
