Overnight Open Thread 05/25/16 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

To kick it off, for those who don't typically enjoy the pleasure of watching Ace on one of his all-too-few twitter rants, he's at it again. Check his TL here.

It's a continuation of his #NeverTrump post from earlier tonight.

So, who didn't see this coming?

What an a-hole. Empire of Jeff cuts to the chase, as usual.

In case you weren't watching 60 Minutes this past Sunday and, let's face it, you probably weren't, here's a more-than-annoying story re a quite flawed Army recruitment program. The gist of it: The Army paid out $10M in recruitment bonuses then spent $28M (thus far) investigating more than 100k soldiers who they accused of filing false claims.

More than 100k have since been cleared of any wrong doing.

I have a very hard time getting pissed off at soldiers for taking advantage of a program that was so poorly managed and I wonder what you current and former members of the Armed Services think of it.

This is such a cool story but I admit that, for just a second, I felt icky about it. That quickly passed.

The video is terrific, but I like how they parlayed it into a business lesson as well.

Adele has a new song out and I was hooked less than halfway through my first listen.

Speaking of Adele, this is quite entertaining.

It astounds me that some people can just part their lips and that kind of a sound emanates from their pie hole.

Yeah, so that chatter from Elijah Wood has Corey Feldman talking again and this time he's threatening to start naming names.

I hope to see the abusers, ahem, alleged abusers, strung up in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater.

12 Hey everybody.

I still miss Craig Ferguson. Having said that... when James Corden loses his political and PC affectations, he can be quite charming/funny. He also does a good number of self-effacing sketches.

One series of sketches he's done that have been funny thus far: "Celebrity Noses." Basically *every* time he tries to do some sort of supposed sketch about, of all things, celebrity noses, some glitch with the CBS crew completely messes it up.

25 Not only do I find it hard to read Tweets - like the page NDH linked to for Ace - but lately for some reason Twitter assumes I'm on a mobile device (I'm not) and displays mobile.twitter. Unless I have jabbascript on.

And I thought Ace gave up on Twitter. This mean he's going to be treating the blog as the poor cousin again?

With my father's hearing he's not too good, but I had a little conversation. It was not pleasant. I told them that shit was going to be cancelled or the next thing they would be hearing from is some lawyers, whom I would tell to think of everything they could come up with.

Also, called in a favor about it. My father happens to be good friends with an old nor retired doctor who was one of the pioneers in heart surgery in this area. He still has influence and pull with the hospital system. I called him, told him about it, and he promised he was going to spend a few hours if not days chewing some asses at that hospital.

Um... standard pix o.i.d.h. request aside...

I recall the night lightning split a tree in Mom's back yard. I was in the tall-ceilinged living room, and perceived crackling energy in the upper part of the room, then heard Mrs Rudd, at the kitchen sink, scream. She said she saw sparks crackling across the top of the soap suds. She'd just taken her hands out of the water.

Have a nice soak...

I bet that $28M, in the right hands, could have done some good for soldiers at the VA.

Well, according to the head of the VA, vets shouldn't be bothered by the lengthy waits 'cause it's just like waiting for a ride at Disney World.

It's interesting the convoluted bullshit that the head bureaucrats can come up with to justify their not wanting to solve problems in their departments.

93 Basically, a good lightning pulse makes a little EMP flash, so to speak (it can be be classfied as a certain class, I forget the details). In Maxwell terms, it's large spike of current dI/dt, which makes a big dB/dt, which then is a travelling wave of induced voltage.

Way back when I was a kid working as an electrician during summers, a carpenter was leaning up against some of tha tinfoil "R-max" sheeting and there was lightning strike some distance away. It shocked the hell out of him. It was the induced voltage in that tinfoil.

I've seen sparks fly from metal sheeting on some our sheds. We've got a pole shed with a tin roof and siding, but it doesn't touch the ground. There's a gap underneath. Well, a cloud was coming on fast, and I was out there doing something and I heard a buzz, a pop, and saw a blue flash out of the corner of my eye.

Then, I heard the thunder. That was the EMP wave of the strike getting there well before the sound wave did.

111 Horowitz has written a piece about the tweet.

http://bit.ly/1Rs6Ght

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at May 25, 2016 11:36 PM (SEXy3)

112 99: Jay, you can look up and see the typical waveform of a lightning pulse. Think of it as just some spiky stuff, and you can look at the frequency spectrum.

The lightning process is very fascinating. Basically, for some damn reason (and this is well, not completely understood), charge starts separating in clouds, top to bottom. Top gets positive, bottom gets negative.

Regular lighting strikes are that charged bottom of the cloud trying to spread the charge out, and going to the ground. It's a chaotic process. You get a very high electric field at spots on the bottom of the cloud, which starts a chaotic ionization chain. These are called "stepped leaders". They go in little jumps. A little tube of ionized air forms, sits there, then jumps out some more.

It works its way toward the ground. That negative charge induces a hot spots on the ground, regions of high positive charge and high electric field. This makes a "ground streamer" of ionized air jump from the ground via the same ionization process.

When the streamer meets the leader, "BOOM!", you've got a strike.

The current pulse is enormous, and occurs in short little spikes. Sort of pulsing (but each pulse having its own waveform).

Note, this gets the ground net negative charged. The final equalization is a "positive stroke" that comes from the top of the cloud. These positive strikes are extremely powerful and travel miles. Strikes have be documented that are over 10 miles in length. They pack an order of magnitude or better energy than a regular strike.

Airplanes can stand regular strikes if they get in the way. Not so much those positive monsters, which have brought down airliners a time or two.

130 This chaotic ionization in air basically limits the voltage of power lines to about a MV (megavolt) or so. If the local electric field (you know the "sharp object" behavior) gets high enough, it will start that chaotic ionization (and cosmic rays may play a role in this process as well!) and you'll get an arc eventually.

No matter how far you separate your wires, unless you can guarantee the local field near the conductors won't get too high, you'll get little leader like fingers forming and spreading out.

There's still all sorts of things they're finding out about lightning. They've discovered some sort of exchange process with the upper atmosphere, even the ionosphere under some conditions. Lightning in the lower atmosphere, and then some sort of "retort" exchange with the upper atmosphere.

There's a station in Florida where they do a lot of lightning research. They learned to make artificial ground streamers by firing a little rocket trailing a wire. They can tell via instruments when a stepped leader is coming down, and fire the rocket right at, and induce a strike right they want it.

Among other things, you can actually test equipment under a real lightning strike.

156 I've read about corona on the masts of ships freaking sailors out way back in the old days.

And isn't just plain old static build up a problem on ships, well landing a chopper or something on a ship. They need to drop a wire to touch the ship and equalize the charge. I've read of people being killed by such discharges. A chopper is landing and you grab a line or something dangling and get the hell shocked out of you.

And another interesting thing. They actually think now that the lightning EMP alone can induce a heart attack if conditions are right. There've been cases were people just were hiking or something alone way out in the middle of nowhere and just dropped dead. They suspected lightning in cases where there was no other explanation, but there were no marks on the body.

Well, they think that if that EMP is strong enough -- you're close enough to the strike -- and it hits at just the right moment in the cardiac cycle, it can mess it up and send you in v-fib or something like that.

When people hear the word conservative now, they equate it with Boehner, Ryan, and McConnell who have enough power to shut down the Obama Admin completely, and instead spinelessly enable its every act. That's not what we mean when we say conservative, but it's what everybody who's not a political junkie hears.

That's why we need a new label, one that emphasizes our continuity with the ideals that this country was founded upon. I don't know what the perfect word is, but we'd go further calling ourselves Federalists (are we not people who want to restore balance to the Federal system?) than we would Conservatives these days. That name, at least, doesn't have the dishonor of the Orange Man, the Mock Turtle, and the Wicked Math Witch upon it.

Federalist as a word on its own, shorn of the trappings of its old party, is a great word for someone that's a fan of the system that the founders have created. Federalism in theory is the balance between national/state/local powers where the current parties favor an imbalance to the national side, which makes them Unitary or Statists. It's a nice little soundbyte-level handle that could go a lot further explaining who we are than trying to battle for the tarnished conservative label, which is claimed by everyone from FisCons, to Evangelicals, to RINOs and NeoCons.

Why sign ourselves up for an uphill struggle we don't have to fight? A new label could do world of good.

2. Glenn Beck is crazy and he makes everyone who gets near him look crazy. Ted Cruz's biggest mistake was letting this lunatic become part of his campaign. Stay away...and don't make eye contact.

282 That's why we need a new label, one that emphasizes our continuity with the ideals that this country was founded upon. I don't know what the perfect word is, but we'd go further calling ourselves Federalists (are we not people who want to restore balance to the Federal system?) than we would Conservatives these days. I always find it humorous that all these "artists" go on and on about not "selling out" and hating "the corporations, man", and then go right out and sign with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.

Oh, and when they sell the rights to their music because they want that scrilla now, but then bitch later because the song was used in a commercial. Hey dickhead, you sold your rights to your music, you don't own it anymore.

BTW, when you Mr Artist go on and on about how radio stations don't pay you for airing your songs, here's a little hint, they pay a shitload in fees to ASCAP, SESAC, and BMI. If you really want to get froggy, then maybe radio stations could charge you the same amount that they charge advertisers since listeners go out and buy your product.

Our station owner has said often that performance rights fees are our largest expense outside of payroll. And it's even higher now, because we have to pay more for streaming our programming online.

There are different rules, though, for performance in public events (like campaign rallies), broadcast, and using songs in commercials. You may have the rights to use a song in one instance, but not the other.

I've had to deal with ad sales people who tell clients they can use a certain song in their ads. I tell them until I'm blue in the face that we can't do that unless the client has the rights use the song that way. If we were caught airing an ad like that, it would cost our station a five-figure fine.

I have never had a close encounter with lightning, but thundershowers are in the current forecast here, and I am smack in the middle of Alberta's Tornado Alley.

I did see a nifty electrical show one time when a 480 volt 3-phase plug on a drilling rig developed a short to ground, being, in this case, the beer-can sized aluminum shell of the plug. There was a half-inch hole burned in the shell, and a ping-pong ball of plasma bounced across the lease towards me, before going "poof" and disappearing without a trace. They had it up and running again in 30 minutes.

334 Our station owner has said often that performance rights fees are our largest expense outside of payroll.

I remember those checks to those shakedown artists, and they were pretty big back then and there was no streaming at that time.

If those "artists" ever wonder where their royalties from those 3 go to, they should go visit their offices. The offices would make a "white shoe" law firm look like the Law Office of Jimmy McGill.

339 318: Lightning protection is something of a black art.

There are actually two strategies. One is too bleed off ground charge before it builds up enough to make a ground streamer and attract a strike. Sharp point rods are good to do that. If you ever see corona around your lightning rods, while scary, it means they're doing that job of bleeding off charge.

THe other strategy is to just take the hit. Some lightning rods aren't really designed to do that. They can bleed, but they ain't gonna take a hit without being destroyed and letting what's underneath get whalloped pretty bad as well.

One rough method to design a protection system is the rolling sphere method. Consider the property, the buildings and structures you want to protect. Imagine the little charged ionized fingers coming down from the sky. You want your protection rods, the things that are gonna take the hit to be the ones that launch the streamers to meet those leaders coming down.

And so you choose a sphere of a certain radius based on the distance a leader will come down before a streamer reaches it, and then roll a sphere on paper all around and make sure you have rods and spires that will keep that rolling sphere from touching any of the structures you want to protect.

The method is well documented if you're interested.

It's not a lot of them, of course, but gamma rays have been observed to be so generated.

376 Speaking of lightning protection systems, there has always been a debate over whether the ground for that should be tied in with the power system ground system (which will be tied with phone and other ground systems at the main service).

There are pros and cons, but my opinion is they should not be. The damage that can be done there is great. Now, the problem is there can be enormous voltage between the lightning ground and the power system ground system during an "event". That risk is well outweighed by the other risks of tying them together in my opinion.

You will get arguments about this. And codes will differ. Codes will be damned as far as this is concerned with me. And they are ways to get special dispensation as well, if the local authority wants to be a bitch about it.

My lightning rods are grounded to their own dedicated ground rods, on all 4 buildings. I subscribe to the theory that the lightning rods enable excess charge to be led off via corona discharge, thereby preventing a lightning strike. But if lightning were to strike, the lightning rods would be the most probable path to ground, and even if the ground cables vaporized from the current, the plasma channel thus created will hopefully keep the bulk of the discharge current out of my buildings.

And, yes, there would be EM effects.

Not once or twice. Over the course of years. Winning - literally despite its attempt to avoid having any particular program - two of the most sweeping electoral victories in all US history (2010 and 2014).

But as that thread and others the last few months have illustrated, the country is in trouble not just because of the clueless, tribalistic, self-absorbed and impractical "liberals", but their shockingly large counter-parts on the "conservative" side.

402 Well, night all. Bed time for me. I don't think Ghost of Kari's bannination is kosher. Basically, he called for her to be executed, presumably for treason. Unsaid, but implicit in his post, is "after due process". Not all that different from the sentiment, "she deserves nothing more than a cigarette and a blindfold", which has been expressed here on numerous occasions. Again, due process implied, if not explicitly stated.

Of course, I am a stickler for proper use of the term "execution" meaning a lawful homicide of an evil-doer, after due process having been observed.

There is a much easier to find ignore script (INCIF) that in my experience does not work as well.

This is the old one (the only link I have and it's not editable).

Which means that you have to manually change references of "minx.cc" to "acecomments.mu.nu"

And, if you are so equipped, any other changes you desire.

In theory I don't like the idea, it does tend to fragment comments. It works better when it's just a few people, but Dipshit Season (the primary) has bloated my list.

And some people change hashes a lot.

Ultimately, at best, it accomplishes the same thing as people separating into narrower and narrower interest groups, but I don't have the answer to that problem (in its context) either.

very dubious concept to begin with) when the brand has immolated
itself. Absurd as in funny, that's how absurd.

Well we may be talking about two different things. This is what I am talking about.

What has differentiated American conservative parties from European conservative parties in the past is that European conservative parties tend to accept the premise of the welfare state, and just want to be better managers of it. By contrast, American conservative parties (and I include Libertarians in there broadly speaking) don't merely want to audition to be better managers of the welfare state, but to actually have an argument over the proper role that government should have in things like welfare. Instead of "can government perform this task better and more efficiently", the argument is "should government even be doing this task in the first place". And that has been a really healthy argument to have I think, because the desire to just have more efficient government leads to greater and greater usurpations of liberty that get lost along the way.

Now I will admit that conservatives have been losing this argument for a while now, partly because Republican politicians have not fought as hard as they should have against big-government schemes, or even foolishly agreed with them themselves, and partly because the allure of Uncle Sugar handing out candy is quite appealing and has seduced a large portion of the electorate. But at least there was still a vehicle for fighting government excess and actually reducing the size and scope of government in our lives, even if that vehicle performed very imperfectly.

With Trumpism, I think it is just a final concession that the argument is over and we lost. It's the final transformation of the Republican party into the more European version of a conservative party, and to abandon the arguments about bigger/smaller government and just make the Leviathan work better by "making great deals".

So when *I* refer to "damage the GOP brand" I was referring to this, at least the perception among conservatives that it was a place that could be employed at least to some degree to fight against ever-expanding government. Now, people like me who genuinely want smaller government really have nowhere to go. (The Libertarians are sadly just about as big of a joke this year as the Republicans are.)

We don't have a small government solution in this cycle. I hate that, but hating it isn't going to change it, and it's not likely that we're going to have any other options but the ones before us. Of them, Hillary is the absolute worst that could happen: A continuation of Obama's policies wedded to a callous disregard for everything that does not advance the cause of the corrupt Clinton machine. We can be 100% certain that this ramshackle Republic of ours would not long endure her assaults on it.

As I said in the previous thread, this makes it not a "vote for" kind of election, but a "vote against" type. You can't possibly get any worse than Hillary, short of Satan himself crawling up out of Hell and entering the race. (With this year's farcical election so far, that wouldn't shock me at this point.)

Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, May 26, 2016. On this day in 1998 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that Ellis Island, the historic gateway for millions of immigrants, is mainly in the state of New Jersey, not New York. This was truly and utterly BS because the original lease and purchase of the island was made by a New Yorker operating out of NY. But since the federal government completely took it over it doesn't really make much difference.

470 Union thugs shutdown access to McDonald's headquarters with their phony $15/hour wage demand. In reality they don't give a shit about McDonald's wages. The entire effort is to get automatic government employee wage increases based on the minimum wage. This because the federal government does not negotiate with their own money, which is why it was illegal to have government worker unions in the first place. A rule that was abolished by commie Democrats.

In fairness, the Heritage article didn't actually say that the PR bill is not a "good deal for conservatives". They correctly note that it isn't as conservative as it could be, which is true, it's a compromise bill.
I would also point out that one of the things that Heritage wants for PR, an exemption from the Jones Act, stands in contrast to Trump's protectionist message.

That can only be because her interests and their interests coincide far more often than her interests and Americas interests.

I think of this election as between a nasty small minded man who the press will hound for the rest of his days and an army of weapons-grade Lois Lerners who will be free (finally!) to torture her many enemies endlessly and harshly. Easy call for me, but YMMV.

People were asking yesterday how anyone would know if Trump "loves America."

I was thinking about this this morning.

He's been threatening to run for potus forever. Every election, he talked about how bad the country was being run, and he "threatened" to run, etc.

Well, he put his money where his mouth is. And his safety and the safety of his family.

And even though I was all in for Cruz, I do think Trump loves the country and will try to fix some of what is wrong.

Who knows. He's on another planet, but who knows. We all know the consequences of good intentions some times.

558 Well I read Mona Charen's column, since WhatWhatWhat pointed it out.

Here it is, in case you are interested: http://tinyurl.com/jebyv2l

I think she overstates how much a Republican Congress would oppose a President Clinton, for sure. There is too much reach-arounding and Paul Ryan seems a little bit too naive for the job that he has.

But I did think this part of her column seemed noteworthy:

If Donald Trump is president, by contrast,
there will be no united opposition among Republicans. As we've seen in
the past few weeks, the urge to bend the knee is very strong. How much
more intense will it be if he sits in the Oval Office? Republicans will
actively assist President Trump in undermining conservatism. From
entitlements to trade to NATO to nuclear proliferation to universal
health care to abortion, President Trump will get a free hand. He thus
has it within his power to sabotage the whole conservative enterprise.

She exaggerates, of course, but not too much. I don't think the same Congressional Republicans who would waffle and compromise with a President Clinton, would be firm and resolute in opposing a President Trump were he to actually try some of his more terrible ideas.

Here's my take on it all, and one I'm sure others have offered:

With Abuela Borracha, we have a pretty fair idea of the sort of things she'd like to get done, and how she'd go about doing them, and none of them are the sorts of things we'd like to see. That is, she's a known quantity - she's a nightmare for sure, and she makes no attempt to conceal that.

Golden Hair Weasel, by contrast, certainly has not given tongue to sentiments - lapped up by an adoring and eager fan-base - or proposals at all suggestive that he views the American people as a problem to be solved, or as malefactors to be punished.

People always talk about 'the 80 percent solution' - Trump's not even that, sad to say. But he's a candidate with an excellent shot at election who is NOT explicitly and wholly committed to expanding and perpetuating the atrocities of the SCOAMF.

Damning with faint praise, I know.

Looking for the silver lining in the unconstitutional impulses of a President Trump, I see the possibility of Democrats experiencing the sort of weaponized government from the receiving end as a motivation for them to want to prevent anybody from doing it. We're post-constitutional, and have been for a long time now, and I don't see a sudden upsurge in genuine support for the principles of a constitutional republic in the near or even distant future.

No, we're at the pay-back stage now - lots of people want the apparatus of the State, turned for many's the year now against them and their way of life, to go to work on wrecking their enemies. Simple as that.

and this is normal and wholesome and healthy, and necessary, if one looks at the history of republics.

To clarify, then:

The possibility of Trump giving illegal orders under some hypothetical scenario is sufficient grounds for full-throated opposition to the man, and simultaneously suggests that the creature who, if Trump does not prevail, will almost certainly do all in her power to undermine whatever is worth saving of this nation, our laws, and our way of life, and who willingly lit the match that burned down a good chunk of the political order of the Arab mid-east, might not be the worst alternative.

Is this what you mean? That boogey-man arguments about what Golden Hair Weasel MIGHT do carry more weight than a documented history of criminality and dictatorial abuse of the powers of the State?

620 I do believe the war crimes thing was brought up in response to Trump saying that he would go after the families of terrorists.

You need to read the Geneva Conventions on the Laws of war. When a civilian gives any kind of aid to terrorist, their protection under those laws is forfieted.

I can sympathize with that perspective, but I think those days are long gone, friend.

We're post-constitutional, and have been for a long time now, and I
don't see a sudden upsurge in genuine support for the principles of a
constitutional republic in the near or even distant future.

No, we're at the pay-back stage now - lots of people want the
apparatus of the State, turned for many's the year now against them and
their way of life, to go to work on wrecking their enemies. Simple as
that.

and this is normal and wholesome and healthy, and necessary, if one looks at the history of republics.

Until now, Democrats have seen no downside to violating the Constitution because they got the benefits of doing so without suffering the consequences. The Constitution is a pretty good set of rules for allowing people with serious disagreements to live together without killing each other. Democrats generally do not appreciate that because they have not had to face the reality of life without anybody following the rules.

Yes, there is a strong desire for payback. There is also a nostalgia for the days when both sides generally played by the rules. I don't really know what way it will work out in the end and, to be honest I am not that optimistic.

The nominally right-wing GOP-controlled House controls the purse strings. Just want to make sure that gets in there.

George was a good guy, but like his brother , had a blind spot when it came to immigration.

Most of the recent immigration floods are a direct result of Bush and then Barky continuing to implement Clinton's wide open let-em-all-in immigration policies.

661 The possibility of Trump giving illegal orders under
some hypothetical scenario is sufficient grounds for full-throated
opposition to the man, and simultaneously suggests that the creature
who, if Trump does not prevail, will almost certainly do all in her
power to undermine whatever is worth saving of this nation, our laws,
and our way of life, and who willingly lit the match that burned down a
good chunk of the political order of the Arab mid-east, might not be the
worst alternative.

Is this what you mean? That boogey-man arguments about what Golden
Hair Weasel MIGHT do carry more weight than a documented history of
criminality and dictatorial abuse of the powers of the State?

And if you say they carry equal weight, then you're diminishing the actual damage she's done already.

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at May 26, 2016 07:13 AM (lutOX)

Well first I appreciate the thoughtful response.
Second, it's not really a "boogey-man argument", it's a real one that Trump himself made at the debate, he has stood by it, and it is not at all outside the realm of possibility given the state of the ME at this time. Now he changes his mind all the time so maybe he'll change his mind on this one too, for once I hope he does change his mind, but he has stuck with it thus far.
Third, the illegal orders is just one example of *many* where Trump has shown evidence of possibly doing great harm. Such as: undermining the First Amendment by "revising the libel laws", threatening to default on the national debt, etc. And for issues that have not yet arisen, what would our understanding of Trump's temperament and character lead us to believe how he will act? I don't think the evidence is very strong in Trump's favor here.
Fourth, and most importantly, the issue for me really isn't "who is less evil". If that were the only question then yes, I agree, Trump is less evil. The question in my mind is, "does either candidate pass a minimum threshold of acceptability needed to earn my vote?" For Hillary the answer is a clear no. For Trump, the answer is also no, for a wide variety of reasons - his crude temperament, his lack of substantive thought on issues, his apparent acceptance of wild conspiracy theories, his lack of any identifiable set of consistent principles of ANY kind, be they liberal or conservative or whatever, his shameless demagoguery of foreigners as the chief culprits for all that's wrong in this country, and his pledge to not do anything *meaningfully helpful* that actually addresses the major problem, the debt and entitlement crisis.

And a great many people seethe at watching the selfish, venal, greedy children walk away from the wreck without consequences.

Dear Uncle Palpatine wrote above that there is a great desire for those of us who have suffered under the dog-eating crackhead to have our hands on the apparatus of the State and turn it against the left with extreme prejudice. And I'll be petty enough to admit that motivates my support for Teh Donald, although I am also mature enough to realize that, even were he to win, ambulatory shitstains like Lois Lerner and Harry Reid would never be brought to book. Not even Scankles will end up cowering in supermax wondering when the block's biggest bull dyke is going to shank her.

What I want is tumbrils rolling through the streets. For both parties. But that won't happen. However, so long as Trump puts a stake through Hillary's political heart and stops her from ever being any sort of political force ever again, for that alone he would deserve the thanks of a grateful nation.

Yeah, it was a conservative blogger who was filming - not an MSM outlet.
I think after TrigglyPuff they are going to be extra careful about their protests being filmed - to avoid identification (since one of the aggressive leaders is the daughter of a Chicago PD higher up) and mocking.

That's a thoughtful, well-argued response.

Two things, though:

1) Your vote isn't perhaps as valuable as you think it to be. No one's is, when push comes to shove;

2) "The question in my mind...." - the question in your mind is not the most important one facing you or others.

We're long past the point of arguing the hypothetical morality of an action that yields less than optimal results. Turning a fire-hose on an occupied building while others kick down doors, break windows, and drag the occupants, dazed and gasping from terror, out onto the street in the middle of the night - would be - and is - a criminal offense.

Unless the house is on fire, of course.

First, I'm kinda done with the "this is the most important election in the history of the country!!!!" shouting.

Second, in your analogy, is Trump supposed to be the person bravely saving the poor victims from the burning building?

If so, then I don't think that is a fair reading of what a Trump presidency would offer. Instead I think it would be more like:

Hillary: stokes the fire hotter
Trump: he MIGHT put out the fire, and he probably WILL start some other fire over there somewhere else

I agree that "Careless With Matches" Trump is preferable to "Cruel Arsonist" Hillary, but that doesn't mean I have to support either one. I prefer to support people who actually will put out the fire and have a demonstrated commitment to doing so.
