Many people in Washington seem to be talking about the prospect of the president unilaterally legalizing the status of several million people who entered the country illegally as though it were just another political question. But if reports about the nature of the executive action he is contemplating are right, it would be by far the most blatant and explosive provocation in the administration’s assault on the separation of powers, and could well be the most extreme act of executive overreach ever attempted by an American president in peacetime. ... In one sense, the approach the president is said to be contemplating does fit into a pattern of his use of executive power. That pattern involves taking provocative executive actions on sensitive, divisive issues to isolate people he detests, knowing it will invite a sharp response, and then using the response to scare his own base voters into thinking they are under assault when in fact they are on the offensive. That’s how moving to compel nuns to buy contraception and abortive drugs for their employees became "they're trying to take away your birth control." This strategy needlessly divides the country and brings out the worst instincts of people on all sides, but it has obvious benefits for the administration and its allies. Liberals get both the substantive action and the political benefit of calling their opponents radicals and getting their supporters worked up. ...But they'll win the day's Twitter War, which is what matters. Spike Lee was right -- we will speak of America in terms of "Pre-Obama" and "Post-Obama."

But poll after poll shows huge majorities do not support Obama on this one and he is really playing with fire.

Yes, we've always been divided but for the most part politicians had some modicum of respect for the separation of powers and the process of getting things done - so division caused inaction so while each side is frustrated that they aren't getting their way at the very least they weren't being trampled on; there was opportunity to win over hearts and minds (or deceive people) and use the agreed upon process to get what you want. Now the president is just throwing that out the window. The agreed upon process is now no longer agreed upon.

But in terms of dividing the public, it's not just that US citizens who oppose this will raise hell. Communities are going to become less secure/see increased violence thanks to all of these MS-13 gang members. Also, how many of them will become La Raza protesters that can flood the streets and demand stuff like they're doing in front of the White House today? These new immigrants are not necessarily fans of the US intent on assimilating - Obama is bringing in people who want to harm America.

In fact, they are already fundraising off the prospect of Obama getting impeached. Obama has fundraising fatigue and needs something to juice it. Impeachment is what he wants.
So, Obama is in a win-win position. If he acts unilaterally on immigration he either gets the amnesty he can not pass legislatively, he gets the fundraising he is lacking, and if he gets impeached he gets to rally the base that otherwise is not caring.

I'm paying 13.50 per hour for my Honduran-born yard man. After asking around here (suburban Michigan), it seems to be about the going rate. There is one guy I know getting straight lawn cutting for $9.00 per hour, but I've seen his lawn and it sucks.
Is there some place out there where Mexicans are dirt cheap? Where are these people?
What do the other commenters pay for this type of labor?
Also, as someone with intimate knowledge of hiring practices and labor rates at manufacturing companies in the area, I can attest there isn't anyone hoping for open borders to get more "cheap labor". It's a myth.

Yuval Levin doesn't have any principled objection to bestowing citizenship upon millions of illiterate lawbreakers. He's fundamentally in favor of "comprehensive immigration reform." Here he is in his own words, from The Weekly Standard:

In other words, he thinks the answer is a range of half-hearted "consequences" for the fence-jumpers, followed by some kind of permanent guest-worker program, but, in Levin's mind, such a solution can't be described as amnesty. As his boy Ryan says, "amnesty is wiping the slate clean and not paying any penalty for having done something wrong."

Actually, that whole "peaceful" part is pretty liberally interpreted, depending on the audience.
After the military, I worked all over the ME and N. Africa and I can tell you that in a lot of these places, "moderate" muslims live like animals, in constant fear for their lives. All it takes is some "devout" muslim to raise suspicion and they can be murdered out of hand. If they are lucky enough to survive a few days or weeks, all is forgotten and the cycle starts over.

Levin's part of the wonk class that does all the real legislative and executive heavy-lifting in modern Washington. Guys like him advise the politicians, craft proposals, and actually draft the legislation that congress votes on without having personally read. You didn't think that Paul Ryan wrote those budgets himself, did you? Levin and a platoon of other anonymous staffers crank that stuff out while Ryan's at the gym doing curls. Elected politicians are just the front-men for the think-tank class who are our actual rulers.
There's no long-term future in risking an electoral backlash for doing the right thing. Not for the politicians or their pilot-fish advisors.
Besides, you don't need a small army of staffers to write bills that read: "Enforce the damn laws, already!"
But you do need them to craft "a series of middling options that mix compassion with prudence, humanitarianism with a respect for the law, in a variety of ways suited to the varying circumstances of this enormous population."
Levin and his ilk are part of the problem.
